- meretrice, on 01/20/2009, -0/+80Wow... read the comments in the original article. Very revealing.
Sounds like the daycare center is constantly short-staffed, which is naturally going to lead to over-stressed caretakers. If an investigation backs up what the commenters (who say they are former employees) said, then I hope the parents sue the place into the ground.
God... that poor baby. "Crawling to his comfort zone" and dying alone. Breaks my heart. - D14852001neko, on 01/20/2009, -0/+69Holy *****... poor baby! FTA "... grabbed his blanket and crawled to his "comfort zone," a bouncer seat, where he collapsed and later died."
- crit1caL, on 01/20/2009, -4/+67Sad bit about what the baby did after it hit the floor.
- NextGenXbox, on 01/20/2009, -2/+56"Benjamin grabbed his blanket and crawled to his "comfort zone," a bouncer seat, where he collapsed and later died, police said."
I have tears in my eyes. :( - inactive, on 01/20/2009, -4/+50There is a special "comfort zone" in prison for child killers
- Hearron, on 01/20/2009, -3/+49Bounce this bitch off the ground please.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -1/+46"The main focus at this point is to reassure parents that this is a safe facility to bring their children to"
...until one of our assistants goes all psycho hose beast, and kills one your children. - Darkhavans, on 01/20/2009, -3/+36I hope she gets locked up for life, it takes some serious problems to throw a 16-month old child down hard enough to kill him. ***** up.
- rages4calm, on 01/20/2009, -1/+32As a father of 2 reading that enrages the living hell out of me.
No excuse for actions like that. - terracottapai, on 01/20/2009, -0/+27Possibly the worst thing I have ever read.
- Barackalypse, on 01/20/2009, -5/+32Yet another reason not to let other people raise your kids for you.
- btschul, on 01/20/2009, -0/+25What the ***** is that supposed to mean?
- DJJensaarai, on 01/20/2009, -2/+27Wow...absolutely terrible.
"...grabbed his blanket and crawled to his "comfort zone," a bouncer seat, where he collapsed and later died."
So depressingly terrible. No justice is enough for the woman that did this. There are no words. - comet605, on 01/20/2009, -1/+26after reading that sentence , it sounded like the boy knew he was going to die so he went to a comforting place .
makes me sad - CrimsonBlur, on 01/20/2009, -2/+22I love the one friend's reaction to the accusations:
"It's not at all the person I know," said Jason Strackany, 22, of Elgin, a childhood friend of Calusinski. "I really think there has to be more to this story."
More to the story, are you kidding me? She confessed to throwing the child to the ground "for being noisy," which ended up killing him. What more do you need to know? Like she was having a bad day or something, or she was feeling depressed? What difference would that make?
The main problem I have with the "understaffed" argument coming from ex employees is that there were apparently no official complaints from parents or staff members about the conditions there or the way children had been treated. If it was such a problem I would think that topic would have come up long before an incident like this.
If it is true that this daycare had severe issues with the management and staff numbers, and parents were pulling their kids out left-and-right, I think they should spend less time putting all the blame on the daycare and take some responsibility of their own. If they really felt things were so out of control they should have notified the authorities. - spyd3rweb, on 01/20/2009, -7/+27I love all the comments above me of people calling for torture and physical abuse of this girl, while failing to see the irony.
- level10, on 01/20/2009, -0/+19"Bitch should be tortured then killed."
Because what this situation needs is MORE pain and death. - Zarmao, on 01/20/2009, -1/+19Toddlers should not be in the care of strangers. They really do need to be raised by family members. When my two daughters were little my wife and I went through considerable hardship so that one of us could be at home with them until they were old enough to go to preschool at 3 or 4. Turning infants over to corporate run "child care" is not good for any child. But it's a sad day indeed when something this horrible happens.
On another subject, how can the woman be charged with 2 counts of 1st degree murder? I've seen accounts of crimes where a guy robs a store and is charged with 20 counts of robbery because he took 20 items. But how can she be charged with 2 counts of murder? Once for throwing him down and once for leaving him to die? - everfresh59, on 01/20/2009, -2/+20Don't matter what they do to her now.... she's gotta live with this for the rest of her life. Nothing can be worst than that....
- Sublex, on 01/20/2009, -0/+17WTF.
- Lonandubh, on 01/20/2009, -0/+17i don't know about "knew he was going to die" but definitely "knew something was seriously wrong"
- logic6, on 01/20/2009, -5/+22Blame the system. Why do we have 22 year olds with little formal training responsible for teaching our youngest children, with very little help, and too much responsibility? Can you imagine the same thing happening in a public school kindergarten, where we have trained, certified educators, being paid a reasonable salary? Probably not. This woman was 22 and had already been working in daycare centers for years.
We should extend the public school system all the way down to infants. We should not staff our early-childhood schools like McDonalds. - pathy, on 01/20/2009, -0/+15The impact didn't even kill the kid.
She THREW a god damn kid on to the floor then LET HIM GO AWAY?
A moment of anger resulted in the injury is ***** horrible, but what's worse for me is that she just left him. Nobody must have checked on him. ***** hell.
I know EVERY TIME I lose my temper with my brother (Or lost it with my sister), my heart sunk after I even gave them a jab in the arm, or a smack. I instantly went and made sure they were okay, I didn't LET them get away even though they wanted to run off. I damn well made sure they were alright and made them realise how ***** sorry I was for it.
Argh. ***** like this gets to me. How the hell can that day care centre be run like that. - kashk5, on 01/20/2009, -0/+15While it does not bring back the child, at least we can take solace in the fact that the parents will receive some sort of monetary compensation since more likely than not the company did not follow proper staffing guidelines when leaving the place understaffed.
Killing a defenseless child is deserving of the harshest punishment. - jhendrix86, on 01/20/2009, -0/+15The sentence about the infant crawling into his "comfort zone" and everything is possibly the saddest thing i've ever read in my life. I literally shed some tears when I pictured it. Just wow
- adikt, on 01/20/2009, -0/+14"...grabbed his blanket and crawled to his "comfort zone," a bouncer seat, where he collapsed and later died."
I have a 18mo old and a 4 year old. Reading that and the subsequent images that entered my mind just brought me to tears. You don't have to have children to feel sad about what happened to that poor baby, but as a parent you think about, "What if that were mine?" - LeviTheSmith, on 01/20/2009, -5/+19No.
- benroy, on 01/20/2009, -0/+13I wonder what made her snap. She was described as experienced and a girl who loved children.
What the hell... - bugsy187, on 01/20/2009, -0/+12She might not survive prison. Inmates have a code about harming children. If you did it you're toast, basically.
- Tonelico, on 01/20/2009, -0/+12Yeah, I cried. He curled up in a "comfort zone" and laid there, and died. I can't even handle it. ***** I'm crying again...
- TWiThead, on 01/20/2009, -1/+13"Matt Walsh, an attorney for the day-care center, said Calusinski and another employee in the room that day were suspended pending an investigation by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services."
"Suspended"? Calusinski has confessed to killing a toddler by throwing him to the floor, and she's been "suspended"? I realize that she almost certainly will never return to the job, but the fact that her employment wasn't immediately terminated is reason enough to distrust this facility. - DrunkMc, on 01/20/2009, -1/+13Exactly. That's the part that hurt the most. Anyone who would take such frustration out on a toddler for being "too noisy" doesn't deserve to ever be a part of civilization again. Lock her up and throw away the key. That poor little kid and his family.
- Sublex, on 01/20/2009, -3/+14Just... just no.
- soulonfire928, on 01/20/2009, -0/+11The whole part about the poor child crawling to his comfort zone is completely heartbreaking.
This is so ***** up. - Azerael, on 01/20/2009, -3/+14It's not like she intended to kill the kid. And if the comments on the article are true, the center she was working at was an understaffed *****. If anyone is to blame, it's the people who figured saving a few dollars was more important than proper care for the kids at the centre. Hopefully their whole company will go under for this, greedy *****.
- AmusedToDeath, on 01/20/2009, -3/+14No no no, if she threw a toddler to the ground hard enough to kill him, it's HER ***** FAULT. I don't care if there was a nuclear war going on in that place, she could have done something besides kill a little baby boy.
- IamNomad, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10I'm strangly ok with this outcome
- rafe101, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10Oh come on, this could happen anywhere as easily as here. And, as you can see from the comments, it does surprise people here.
- fxu1989, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10There is malice everywhere.
Shut the ***** up, idiot. - inactive, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10 Unfortunately, most people have no choice as one income no longer supports a family.
- GoKings, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10Jesus christ that mugshot thing on the side was terrifying. I don't know which one was there for you, but #3's mugshot was on the side for me. Sweet jesus...
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-mug-p ... - MehgoMeh, on 01/20/2009, -0/+9It actually choked me up a bit. Just terrible vision to think about.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -1/+10***** up, but killing her/torturing her/rott [sic] in the ground, will only make things worse. Eye for an eye is barbaric, and killing her won't bring the toddler back.
- keraneuology, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8Because justice is still important.
- Amavel, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8I was about to ask the exact same thing.. what a dumbass.
- siszam, on 01/20/2009, -3/+11I took a lot of attitude from people for choosing to stay home and raise my children. I was looked down on for not having a career and more than once was told I was wasting my life. It was the smartest choice I ever made. I never trusted anyone with my children. This is why.
- level10, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8You say her life should be taken, but would you be willing to take it if the chance presented itself?
- logic6, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8Yes, good training would teach this. Unfortunately, many people working in this field do not have any training, much less good training.
- bugsy187, on 01/20/2009, -2/+10What if a defenseless child killed another defenseless child? Then what? hmm... deep.
- FastZ, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7I'm sure people throw babies on the ground all the time in your country as well, *****.
