- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -7/+61Yet the Detroit Tigers are allowed to live on.
- WordsnCollision, on 05/18/2009, -7/+49The Tamil Tigers pioneered the use of female suicide bombers and invented the explosive belt. They assassinated 2 world leaders, including India's Rajiv Gandhi. The current endgame would have been over much earlier had the LTTE not prevented thousands of Tamil human shields from escaping the war zone. Now that these killers have been crushed, let's hope the international community offers assistance to heal this beautiful land.

- 5cents, on 05/18/2009, -2/+32sad? paid off what he did for all these years. I am not here supporting anything here. But I believe anyone who tries to achieve something by violence they will end up this way..
- Reostat, on 05/18/2009, -2/+28Gardiner grinds to a halt as men push women and children in strollers to the front lines.
Seriously, that infuriated me. - inactive, on 05/18/2009, -20/+46This war isn't over.
Oh, sure, the Tamil Tigers are dead and gone, but at what cost to the Tamil population? And exactly how has the Sri Lankan government gone about attempting to resolve the problems which led to their formation? Whoever said "not much" take a gold star. Problems that don't get resolved have a habit of popping up in another 5-10 years.
Also, it doesn't matter if the entire Tamil High Command got wiped out. Velupillai Prabhakaran was a paranoid narcissist who brooked no opposition or questioning from within his ranks. More than a few commanders of his defected, while still pledging loyalty to the overall Tamil cause. They still exist, and they're not stupid enough to take on the Sri Lankan Army in a straight up fight (indeed, by the fact they managed to defect from the LTTE and are still alive, you should assume they are both intelligent and capable).
Basically the Sri Lankan Army took the "kill 'em all" approach, which makes them as bad as the LTTE in my book. There have been numerous human rights violations and even possible war crimes committed by both sides, and in a just world, we'd throw the comamnders and politicians on both sides in a dark cell somewhere and lose the key.

(Thanks to Cain for writing the above comment) - belumaves, on 05/18/2009, -1/+23that is beyond stupid.... they are mostly hindu, but they fought on a ethnic basis, not religious.
- Maddoktor2, on 05/18/2009, -2/+23When you strap on a bomb belt you cease to be a freedom fighter and become a murderer.

We in India suffered because of this bastards because they took out Rajiv Gandhi who Progressive leader. Probably set us Indians back 5 to 8 years in terms of reforms. - inactive, on 05/18/2009, -10/+23Good to see a terrorist organization get ***** thumped.
Especially since its some little country doing it. - kinokonoko, on 05/18/2009, -6/+18Once the Tamil Tigers used suicide bombers, refugees as human shields andrecruited child soldiers, they gave up their rights to legitimacy. They crossed the line between legitimate resistance against a cruel government and terrorism.
Now get back to work all you Tamil protesters and make me a nice curry with nan! - inactive, on 05/18/2009, -3/+15What do we take from all of this, well for one I think it disproves the theory that terrorist groups cannot be defeated. You may not be able to stamp out an idea or ideology but you can certainly make the struggle for it a living hell.
- daschupa, on 05/18/2009, -0/+9He died of natural causes, "natural" being fire.
- directive0, on 05/18/2009, -0/+8Your ability to see issues in black and white would make you an asset to any governments war room.
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -4/+121 idiotic American posting what his ass spew, 150 Millions to go.
- HBZ55, on 05/18/2009, -6/+13So the indiscriminate shelling of civilians isn't considered a war crime?
See, I agree with the original poster's opinion about the Sri Lankan army being as bad as the LTTE. They both committed war crimes, the Tamil tigers used civilian shields and the government didn't allow aid to be given to the civilians trapped in the conflict zone, and they indiscriminately shelled the location with heavy artillery knowing full well that it will result in the killing of innocent people.. - inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+7Heh, I'd love to know why nearly half of the people who read this comment buried it. Not because I'm criticising you, just because I'm intrigued as to your thought process.
- joper90, on 05/18/2009, -0/+6The key question is where can i get that outfit.. that tiger print hat rocks far to hard...
- Stemnin, on 05/18/2009, -1/+7Japanese kamikazes?
- aeroxis, on 05/18/2009, -4/+9I'm honestly happy they killed this bastard. I hope they get all their evil minions that spread the propoganda that they are freedom fighters. These bastards killed thousands of people. The same people who this group claimed that they were fighting to get freedom for.
- publiclurker, on 05/18/2009, -3/+8Good guys do not strap on bombs and deliberately kill non-combatants. you may want to re-evaluate your friends claims of sanity.
- Hellahulla, on 05/18/2009, -2/+7Doesn't it depend on who you actually kill though?
If you're a combatant, and the people you kill are combatants, is it not much different to dropping a bomb, just that a willing person died also?
Just a thought. - faithfreedom, on 05/18/2009, -5/+9He reaps what he sowed.
- shallot, on 05/18/2009, -13/+17I seriously don't understand these so called Human rights being used for Terrorist organizations...these bloody tamils of LTTE were terrorists and deserved to be crushed like Cockroaches....
I whole heartedly congratulate the SriLankan government in accomplishing this task. - WordsnCollision, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4By the way, it's not as if the Sri Lankan Tamils have no place to go - the Indian state of Tamil Nadu has a population of over 66 million.
"It is the fifth largest contributor to India's GDP and the most urbanized state in India. The state has the highest number (10.56%) of business enterprises in India."

http://www.tn.gov.in/ - hardeep1singh, on 05/18/2009, -2/+6What if Osama was running away in an Ambulance?
- wpyh, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4Same thing, it would constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention.
However, if a terrorist was fleeing in an Ambulance, I'd say ***** the conventions and bomb the car! - roflmcwaffles, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4Did you read the article?
- bluelines, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3Maddoktor2, I think you're missing the point. How many examples do you need? The principle is the same: there is a difference between those who would sacrifice themselves in order to kill opposing combatants and those who intend to kill innocent civilians. There is resistance, and there is terrorism.
- Maddoktor2, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4And just how often does that happen?
Please feel free to cite specific examples and overall statistics of exclusively in-combat-related instances in relation and as opposed to exclusive civilian instances. - bluelines, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4stutimandal - The elimination of a terrorist organization does not constitute ethnic cleansing. This was a grossly heavy-handed military strike where many civilians were killed by parties on both sides. Tamils are still free to live lives intertwined with the rest of the Sri Lankan population. I can only hope that the government stops marginalizing the Tamil peoples and extends the same civil rights rights to all Tamils that the majority Sinhalese enjoy. If full equality is not established, then this was all for naught.
- bluelines, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3Human rights already belong to all. Those concerned were interested in ensuring the rights of the Tamil people who were caught in the crossfire. Also, remember, some of these "cockroaches" were child fighters. So while it is good that the LTTE has been dissolved, the goverment still has much to answer for if they indeed knowingly attacked in ways that directly killed civilians and did not do as much as possible to minimize civilian casualties.
- nullcodes, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3No, the war crime is stealing an ambulance and running away in it .. once identified as not being a real ambulance .. the threat was neutralized .. well within compliance of the Geneva convention which I'm sure you never read. Not to mention the additional war crime of being a coward and hiding and fighting from the designated safe zone.
- nullcodes, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3The bastard dog was hiding in the civilian safe zone. Tamils should be pissed off at the LTTE for hiding themselves and fighting within the designated civilian safety zone. Why was their entire leadership huddling inside the designated safety zone? The LTTE are treacherous traitors of the Tamils. Also what the ***** ... a major war crime is STEALING an ambulance and running away in it like a coward. Shameful and pathetic.
WHY THE ***** WAS THAT ***** IN THE SAFE ZONE? - inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3*Daily Fail
- spepin, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4Sucks that so many people had to get caught in the crossfire over stupid patches of land and ideologies.
Mind you, obviously that's nothing new at all. - bluelines, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3Phalanxia, I totally agree with you. Killing civilians directly or otherwise normally insights even more animosity towards a faction. The only way to stave off another uprising in future generations is to do all that is necessary to show the Tamil peoples that they are better off without the LTTE. This means fully embracing tamils as an important and valued segment of the Sri Lankan population. They need to know that they will share all of the rights and opportunities that the majority currently enjoy. New investments coming into formerly LTTE-held regions should directly benefit those whose livelihoods have been shattered by violence and neglect. The Sri Lankan government should now focus on aid to those who have suffered through this ordeal and also to mending the rifts between the two peoples.
I think that's how it should work, anyways. Maybe I just don't know enough about the whole situation. - 8FoldPath, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3It's easy to take out terrorists when the battlefield is a little larger than your back yard. In the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, not so much.
- 8FoldPath, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3That you would separate a human from human rights says much about you and little about them.
- hardeep1singh, on 05/18/2009, -6/+9Congrats SriLanka. Live in Peace. Atleast you managed to achieve it.
- hobbler, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4So what should the Sri Lankan government do? Pack up and go home because they have civilians, allowing more civilians to be killed by the LTTE later on? If a terrorist organization realizes that the governments will simply stop everything if hostages are taken, that feeds the terrorists.
It's a horrible loss of life, but now all of Sri Lanka is under Sri Lankan control, not the LTTE's. - nickespinosa, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2Wow, maybe we should just kill everyone that doesn't agree with us.
Men, women, children? I say ***** em'!
/S - bluelines, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2See, the word "almost" keeps things from being so black and white. There are no definites in cases like these because intentions mean everything. Killing is fundamentally wrong, but a person who uses extreme methods to fight a hostile enemy faction is a combatant in a war situation, not a terrorist. Not until innocents are targetted or killed indirectly. These distinctions are very important.
I'd even say that indiscriminate bombings of any kind are acts of terror if such actions are carried out with full knowledge of impending civilian casualties through direct or collateral damage. Unfortunately it happens all the time.
(by the way, I hope I didn't come off as sounding rude when I suggested that you were missing the point. I do understand yours, though.) - vault, on 05/18/2009, -1/+3Beautiful land? Sri Lanka's a *****. The war is over and now the winner gets to keep all of the ***** instead of just the majority of the *****. Wow, big win there.
- ClevelandBrown, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2Good.
- Maddoktor2, on 05/18/2009, -1/+3In a word, yes.
- Waiting2awake, on 05/18/2009, -1/+3Same difference, if laws are to mean anything, they have to apply to all of us equally.
- nullcodes, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2Because you don't understand .. the LTTE has no support within Sri Lanka .. they go about killing civilians they went into villages and massacred people .. they carried out hundreds (well over a thousand) of suicide bombings.. they hid INSIDE The safety zone and fought from within the safety zone. What was the Army supposed to do? If the LTTE was not wiped out .. more and more civilians would have died and the ethnic tensions would have gotten even worse. Many Tamils live in the Southern parts of Sri Lanka among the Sinhalese, however the LTTE ethnically cleansed all the Sinhalese, Muslims, and other minorities from the zones they used to control. The LTTE is finished in Sri Lanka and terrorism is over, I'd only be concerned about the LTTE remnants floating about in the West and in countries like South Africa, Malaysia, and India. All Sri Lankans, including Tamil and Sinhalese are relieved.
The Sri Lankan government in has permanently put down (non Tamil) insurgencies based in the South in the past.
When they hid inside the civilian safety zone they showed their true colors, and how important it was to get rid of them. - norman619, on 05/18/2009, -3/+5Excellent!!! Let's keep the deaths coming! These guys are evil and gave up their righ to live and their status as human when they started abducting peopel and executing them when their ransom demands could not be met.
