- Azerael, on 04/08/2008, -0/+69It's torture because you always hear the melody, but the truck is nowhere to be seen...
- Sartic, on 04/08/2008, -0/+39I've worked at the leading ice cream truck company in Sweden (Hemglass) and when I heard about this, I just laughed.
This guy is just another grumpy old man that gets annoyed by the signal once every two weeks the trucks come by his house, so he comes up with some ***** excuse and thinks it will stop the trucks from playing their melody.
And the obesity thing is just ridiculous! Blame the parents. They're the one that let their kids buy the ice cream. How hard is it to say "no"? - yetAnotherCroc, on 04/08/2008, -1/+27The Ice cream truck has been on the road on a regular basis for the last 30 or so years at least. 15 years ago child obesity wasn't a problem here in sweden. Now it is (barely). What do you think changed? (Hint: It's not the Ice cream truck)
- dheaddy, on 04/08/2008, -0/+22No. The problem is idiot parents who are slowly killing their kids by letting them eat whatever and whenever they want to 'keep them happy'. There's nothing to be happy about when you're suffering from diabetes, obesity and heart disease before you're 30.
Stop finding scapegoats, it's the ***** parents. - bosssmiley, on 04/08/2008, -0/+17Global warning melted them all. Poor icecream men. :-(
- Brodels, on 04/08/2008, -0/+14huh? My Dad always said that sound meant they had run out of ice cream?
- Nelka, on 04/08/2008, -0/+13The three stories listed beneath this one are: "
"Teacher accused of sending nude pics to seduce student"
" Electrocuted rat brings trains to a halt"
"Woman indicted in Santa Claus stabbing case"
All of these stories sound infinitely more interesting than this one. - hokie47, on 04/08/2008, -0/+12High gas prices and the fear of pedophiles
- chrillen, on 04/08/2008, -0/+9Where the hell do you live? In bloody Norrland? Here in Västerås we've reached 32c
- diggit08, on 04/08/2008, -0/+8So in Sweden file sharing is legit but ice cream trucks should be illegal? I love this place!
- vinnyvenus, on 04/08/2008, -0/+8Whatever happen to ice cream man? They are sure becoming a dying breed
- computershack, on 04/08/2008, -10/+18What next? Back to living in caves scratching root vegetables out of the ground? That professor needs kicking out of the academic world for such a stupid short sighted conclusion. If kids were getting them every day 365 days a year, he may have a point. Shame that winter comes along to provide a flaw in his argument.
- inactive, on 04/08/2008, -0/+8It's like people think that becoming a professor licenses you to spout retarded *****.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 04/08/2008, -0/+8No kidding! It always seems to be around somwhere but never on my street.
- RaDeus, on 04/08/2008, -0/+6the melody has a lyrics:
"vi lurar små barn, vi lurar små barn, på deras veckopeng"
roughly translates to: we trick small kids out-off their allowance
allways sing it in my head when i hear it 8) - betona, on 04/08/2008, -0/+6Of course! They should only have trucks that sell healthy snacks like broccoli and spinach.
/I always liked the orange popsicles from the ice cream trucks - inactive, on 04/08/2008, -0/+6Was it ever really that profitable? Most people that did it had another job, too.
- robfitzonbass, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5I agree that the melody is torture...but for different reasons. At least in the US there are many different songs being played (such as "The Entertainer), which are at least somewhat pleasant. Listen here: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GY-0RvyaQdM and imagine that you have to hear that melody repeat over and over and over as it makes its way around the city. THAT is torture.
- tgarza17, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5His parents never gave him ice cream money. Now he wants that truck GONE. And get the hell off his lawn.
- SzaszMan, on 04/08/2008, -2/+7What's changed is kids now think exercise involves sitting on their asses and playing Xbox 4 hours a day, and then when that's over, watching TV and surfing the internet for another 4 hours before bed. Of course, cutting physical education out of school budgets doesn't help either, and parents today probably don't help at all (e.g., they model slothful habits for the kids).
Ice cream trucks aren't the problem. Stupid article but I dugg it anyways to highlight how ignorant people are - even those of us with professorships who really should know better. - poidh, on 04/08/2008, -1/+6Let's all kill ourselves then nothing can harm us.
- EserVerx, on 04/08/2008, -1/+6Do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro...
That god damned low quality music will haunt me forever... - smacksaw, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5#1. Why is a Swedish ice cream truck torture? Do they play ABBA's music?
#2. How much do they cost and how long until we can ship them to Guantanamo Bay? - Tochi, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5As an adult i get ice cream cravings whenever I hear "The Entertainer"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Entertainer_(rag) - madmax85, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5http://youtube.com/watch?v=DRZk5v2bWyA&feature=rel ... This is the melody
- radarbeam, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5Gotta love it when governments tell you what's good for you and what's not based on the fact that a few kids abused it and some parent have no control on their kid's diet.
- luet, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4If it is outlawed it will just become more popular. Any person with a sociological background would be able to see that. Ice Cream trucks will eventually be phased out anyway.
- inactive, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4What a weird format. 3 sentences and they manage to put other unrelated links right in the middle of the article.
- inactive, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4MOM! MOOOOM! throw down some money! the ice cream man is coming!!!
- sv650touring, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4the torture is when you ask the ice cream man for a sno-kone and he hands you some little flavorless pre-made piece of crap instead of a real one
- geddon, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Would you like to biggie size that argument for an additional 45 cents?
- RaiderWolf, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3And one more item about children: this superstitous nonsense of blaming tobacco companies for kids who smoke. Listem! Kids don't smoke because a camel in sunglasses tells them to. They smoke for the same reasons adults do, because it's an enjoyable activity that relieves anxiety and depression.
And you'd be anxious and depressed too if you had to put up with these pathetic, insecure, yuppie parents who enroll you in college before you've figured out which side of the playpen smells the worst and then fill you with Ritalin to get you in a mood they approve of, and drag you all over town in search of empty, meaningless structure: Little League, Cub Scouts, swimming, soccer, karate, piano, bagpipes, watercolors, witchcraft, glass blowing, and dildo practice. It's absurd. : : : They even have "play dates", for Christ sake! Playing is now done by appointment! But it's true. A lot of these striving, and parents are burning their kids out on structure. I think what every child needs and ought to have every day is two hours of
daydreaming. Plain old daydreaming.
Turn off the internet, the CD-ROMS, and the computer games and let them stare at a tree for a couple of hours. Every now and then they actually come up with one of their own ideas. You want to know how to help your kids? Leave them the ***** alone!

- vinnyvenus, on 04/08/2008, -1/+4That was one of the worst page layout for a website ever.
- Meekus, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Is this really the purpose of government to tell people what they can and can't eat? Are we not smart enough to decide for ourselves? How about tackling this via education and example or perhaps through "individual responsibility".
Laws that are for the "greater good" are not to be taken lightly as they take away personal liberty. Granted, I am looking at this from an American viewpoint, not as a citizen of Sweden. - Sartic, on 04/08/2008, -0/+240 years this month actually.
- OutAndAbout, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Ice cream trucks torture? Yeah, right up there with waterboarding.
- Anthet, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2I think this is from the same people (the left wing party, all parties are left wing bur these are very left wing) that wanted to impose a "man tax" on all the men in the country :)
- rainydaywoman, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Buried as inaccurate. Every time I heard an ice cream truck I ended up running almost 2 km to get to it. It pretty much canceled the ice cream out.

dugg for titties n' beer anyway - webcrumb, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1It's not torture - it's an "enhanced marketing technique."
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1When I was a kid there were at least 5 different trucks comming around my neighborhood, and there were very few fat kids.

NSFW...lots of cursing. - SabrinaHeaven, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1He's right, you know. You may realize that when your children die before you do.
- ReyX, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1This sounds like a pretty reputable news source. I got these three headlines in the middle of the "article:"
* Swedish professor: 'Bras cause saggy breasts' (8 Apr 08)
* Teacher accused of sending nude pics to seduce student (7 Apr 08)
* Electrocuted rat brings trains to a halt (5 Apr 08) - ZurMacht, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Delicious, delicious torture.
- Fastbullit, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1It's funny, the fact that we don't seem to have many obese children running about is irrelevant?
Although I still agree with Prof. Sjöberg, It is bloody torture to have to hear that bloody jingle while trying to do something that requires a peaceful, quiet environment.. -
