- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -8/+108There is hardly anything I trust less than the Church.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59If I had a son, I'd probably feel more confident letting him take a part-time job at Ikea than at the local franchise of a certain religion whose leadership shields rapists and child molesters.
- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -5/+57Sweden just keeps getting better an better. Not that they used to be bad.
- tsaylor, on 10/12/2007, -8/+51How about the Government? At least the church won't kill you (anymore)
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43I dunno, Father Allen offered me his "key" :(
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Americans.
Let the digg-down begin. - SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Im Swedish and I trust IKEA much more than the church :P Overall, Sweden is a very unreligious country, like all the Scandinavian countries. I find it weird that 80% are members in Svenska Kyrkan (Church of Sweden)... Like 90% of everyone I know are atheist.
- Bean945, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31The church doesn't offer designer bookcases...
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Yeah, but the church certainly won't give them stylish, easy-to-assemble furniture.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22It's because we were born into the church up until they separated the church from the state some time ago.
Oh and Sweden is the most secular country in the world, yay! :)
Norway though...uh. - corevette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20who would trust the church?
- swillies, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19or free allen keys :(
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16What?!
Next you'll be telling me you don't all skip across the fjords with your blonde pigtails flowing in the wind, picking flowers for grandmamma. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Umm, just a note that we're not all as zealous about IKEA as the parent.
- bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14us Scandinavians LOVE IKEA in fact almost all my furniture is from IKEA and they have never brought me down.
- patience, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Where would a 5 year old boy be the safest?
1. A room filled with 5 priests?
2. A room with 5 mobsters convicted of murder.
3. A room with 5 Jihadists.
4. A room with 5 Nazi Skinheads.
2, 3, and 4 seem like the best options.
They have some standards. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12IKEA rocks! I'm an American, and I would much rather be in one of IKEA's large stores than in a church. The furniture makes me drool.
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Those flags where designed ages ago, when Christianity first made it's way to the Scandinavian regions, it was the rave back then when people where scared of plagues and wanted to be on the good side of the lord almighty,
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Lately?!? Name a single representative period in history in which Christians have followed the model of Christ? Please?
From the history I've read, from day one, they've always been pretty shady. - Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What's weird is that the flags of most or all Nordic/Scandinavian countries have a big cross on them... There's nothing religious about the American flag yet we're so fanatical compared to many other western nations.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15No but our social security system will. So we're fine.
- gareth805, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Swedes smarter than the average American then...
- andreascliment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Nope not the Catholic church, Protestant church. Protestantism used to be the state religion in Sweden, now we don't have one.
- Complexium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Our history is so much wider than yours. The struggle for Christianity in the Nordic countries lasted several hundred years. As said before, the breakthrough came during/after the plague.
By the way, Leiv Eriksson discovered America before Christopher Columbus. ;)
Greetings form Norway! Hilsen fra Norge! - Quakes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Was there any point in copy-pasting this newspaper article? At all?
- FzArEkTaH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Owning both a Saab (pre GM model) and countless items from Ikea - i agree!
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@tsaylor:
I place an equal amount of trust in the church as in politicians - a very small amount.
Both of them are supposed to be very trustworthy, but proved over and over again that they aren't. - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I would never ask you to guard my children...
- Heavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Or santa. Or Unicorns, Or trolls, Or elves, Of hobbits, Or bigfoot , or.. you get the idea..
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11"How about the Government? At least the church won't kill you (anymore)"
Problem is that the American government isn't secular - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The church has a pretty poor standing in Sweden in general... (talking the Christian church now) People are regularly leaving the church to save some money, and recently the fact that many churches now often stand empty and the economical problems associated with that was in the news. It would be interesting to have some survey done in how many Swedes regularly attend the church.
- pigsbladder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8needs more Thor amirite?
- jamessavik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7>>Volvo, Ericsson, Saab and IKEA
None of these entities have ever launched a crusade, suppressed scientific knowledge, attempted genocide on the followers of rival ideologies, started a war, attempted to overthrow and replace a government, operates an intelligence service, operates a standing army, employs mercenaries to protect their foreign operations, burns books, censors art or tortures and/or executes customers that look at competitors wares. - marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Church should consider outsource parts of their business to IKEA.
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you think religion would solve anything like that you're a fool, and I very much doubt we have any more bestiality than any other nation with farmlands, just because you see something in the news doesn't make it true or the norm, this article is true though since I know from experience, you have no real insight into Sweden except flawed media, don't pretend you know anything.
- unoriginl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"Will IKEA give them a free plate of meatballs? I think not."
Not free, but almost: http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,392850,00.html - lagrange, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why would anyone trust a bunch of carnival hucksters who sell eternal life in exchange for money and obedience. A bunch of guys who have a well established fetish for ***** young boys, going on murder sprees and burning women at the stake to please their sky god.
Yeah, I guess they do make a corporate monster like IKEA look like the ***** 4H club. - mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Is this the Catholic church? Cause if so then I agree...those dudes are shady...I mean seriously...the Pope being the physical manifestation of GOD? Come on! I thought that was Jesus.
- Cyrusman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Why is this surprising? Christianity as well as religion in general is just a bunch of *****. Last time I checked, it was 2006...not 1543
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5SeBBBe, would you agree with me, when I say in Sweden that story is not really news-worthy?
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Agreed,
Christians have never been good. It says in the bible that God uses the weak to humble the strong. By using an imperfect church to do good, the recognition for the good acts goes to God and not to the church. I hope that you are able to see that since the church is full of imperfect people like you and me that when great good comes from them it is actually God working and not the people of the church. God uses people from all religions, races, and belief systems to fulfill his work on earth. Christianity was never meant to be about the church, but about God. I agree that the Church does not often follow the model of Christ, but really...who does? We are all in the same boat together here. I wish Christians would be a better role model sometimes, but really, what do you expect from human beings. There are some good Christian role models to look to like:
1) Mother Teresa
2) C.S. Lewis
3) Martin Luther King Jr.
4) Rich Mullins
but I am sure these people made mistakes too. If you look through the Bible, almost every person that God used in any major way was by the worlds standards a major screw up. For example:
1) King David (the goliath guy): killed a guy so he could sleep with his wife
2) Solomon (the wisest man ever supposedly): had a harem of like 1000 women
3) Apostle Paul (one of the founders of the early church): chased down christians and executed them
4) Its amazing how many prostitutes, murderers, etc. that God uses in the bible too
Ultimately, we can only attain the standard that Jesus set out for us by allowing God to teach us how to be better people. And we cannot achieve this if all we do is point the badness out in other people and fail to recognize the badness in ourselves. - xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was deterred from all religions because they all seemed to have the same crap. All of them had some people (guru, priest, cardinal, pope, preacher, speaker, himam, etc...) who just seems to have an obsessive propensity for fooling people. The same bug that bites con artists seems to bite a lot of these religious figures.
I think they have a sick desire to tell people to get up, kneel down, give them some money, pray and do whatever they tell you to do. It gives them a power trip and the more far fetched the crap they throw at you the more pleasure they get out of it.
Kids love playing that game... it's called Simon says. Adults keep on playing the game and they call it Sunday Mass. - porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Although I am not Swedish, have never been to an Ikea store, and do not favor Saab cars, I must say that not once has any of my Volvos let me down (120, 140, 240 and 740 series). The later model FWD and AWD versions, however, have their share of problems.
Oh yeah, and I've never been to church before, but people tell me I'm not really missing out on anything. - andreascliment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Religion is a personal things and shouldn't have to do with a building or association anyway. Sweden is a very secular society and most persons are either agnostic or atheist.
A big reason behind why we don't go to church as much is probably because the church is separated from politics and we learn about all religions from a more or less objective approach in school. We are also encouraged to make up our own minds and won't believe something just because we are told it's true. - Gideon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4the reason that most of us (the swedes) have a distant relationship with faith and church is that because in school we are not told that there is a god, we are told that some people choose to believe in some sort of Deity and left to make up our own mind in the matter.
and being reasonable people most of us come to the conclusion that the existence of a god is just ridiculous. But we do respect those people who find it comforting or what not to believe. so come to Sweden, the land of high speed low cost Internet, hot blond girls and true religious freedom. :) - KnifeFed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It isn't an issue of trust, but one of interest. The majority of us Swedes simply don't harbor much interest in our church (or religion in general) from a "faith" point-of-view, but that doesn't dismiss interest and curiosity coming from an academic/theoretical angle. As far as comparing big corporations/brand names to church is concerned, the point eludes me. In my personal opinion (as a Swede) however - the whole IKEA nesting-syndrome and some peoples need for filling their gaping maw of a soul by surrounding themselves with sub-par quality furniture and vapid trinkets - well... to each his own, I guess.
- Olle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It should be explained, that if you are a member of the Swedish church, you pay tax to the church. This comes off of your pay check, just as the normal tax. The "church tax" is different in different parts of the country, but it is typically around 1%.
Up until a few years ago, if you were born in Sweden you were automatically a member of the Swedish church. You could leave, but that requires you to take action. This is no longer the case and if you want to be a member you have to actively join.
Most adults I know were born into the Swedish church and are paying that tax, without actually going to church. I expect that the membership in the Swedish church will go down as the old members die off without being replaced. - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Religion can definitely solve bestiality problems.
I mean if a priest is caught raping a lamb then he would just be transfered to another region: problem solved. - martinnn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And the most democratic as well, at least according to the Economist.
http://www.economist.com/theworldin/international/displayStory.cfm?story_id=8166790&d=2007
I'm going to suggest to the new leadership in Sweden (a.k.a. Nya moderaterna) that we invade the U.S. to spread democracy and secularization. The U.S. is ranked far down, at 17'th place.
(Yeah, I know, off topic) - martinnn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3> Was there some kind of Swedish Coke scare that went unreported or something?
I'm from Sweden and don't trust Coca-Cola much. First, their primary goal is to sell as much unhealthy stuff as possible. Second, any company trying to lure small children into buying unhealthy things doesn't deserve to be trusted. -
