- Rotzooi, on 07/02/2008, -1/+33To thwart Forbes' *****:
1. Sweden
2. Iceland
3. Switzerland
4. The Netherlands
5. Denmark
6. Hong Kong
7. South Korea
8. Norway
9. USA
10. Luxembourg - jumbalia, on 07/02/2008, -1/+25What is the secret to these Nordic countries? They seem to be at the top of all the good lists and the bottom of all the bad ones. I was just wikiing-around and I came across the Democratic Index and all the top spots were Nordic countries. Must be the cold weather :P
- Rotzooi, on 07/02/2008, -5/+23Atheism. Seriously. Belief that some other entity will make everything right, be that here or in some imaginary next life, really ***** with people's sense of responsibility. Know that you are responsible for your actions in the right here and now, and you've got a recipe for success.
- MCA2142, on 07/02/2008, -1/+16Good to see my home country, South Korea prepping for StarCraft II at #7 on the list.
- grylls, on 07/02/2008, -0/+13Swed here, couldnt have said it any better myself.
- bryanwebster, on 07/02/2008, -4/+14I drive a SAAB and shop at Ikea
- znicket, on 07/02/2008, -3/+12My country is nr. 2, and we still don't have a iTunes store.
- fireashes, on 07/02/2008, -2/+11thats not weird.
And we are growing. We increased our position by one. Last year we were at 8 and now we have increased by 1 to become 9. - Pazz, on 07/02/2008, -1/+9http://www.sirened.com/un-names-iceland-as-the-bes ...
Are there still ignorant Americans ? - notnoisy, on 07/02/2008, -0/+8Norway here
We're socialist states. That sounds awful to some, but socialistic thinking have brought the people of the Nordic countries many benefits. High taxes are to be used for the benefit of all. - exscape, on 07/02/2008, -1/+8Too bad that we (Sweden) are soon to be the most wireTAPPED as well.
- grylls, on 07/02/2008, -0/+7@tian
I dont really know how to read those stats from your links, but you have to keep in mind that atleast in Sweden everyone born swedish was put in as a member in the christian church. Many dont care or dont even know that they are members and pay a small tax to the "svenska kyrkan". And this makes any statistics fairly worthless. - MCA2142, on 07/02/2008, -1/+8Then worry not my friend. You are DRM free.
- Kazumato, on 07/02/2008, -2/+8Weird list.
According to the OECD (The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, http://www.oecd.org/), the top 10 most wired countries are:
1. Denmark
2. Netherlands
3. Switzerland
4. Korea
5. Norway
6. Iceland
7. Finland
8. Sweden
9. Canada
10. Belgium
Each of these countries has at least 23 subscribers per 100 inhabitants -- Denmark has 34.3. In comparison, the United States has 22.1 subscribers for every 100 inhabitants. Despite this relatively small discrepancy, the U.S. ranks 15th on OECD's list.
Full report: http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/21/35/39574709.xls - Tollofsen, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6Yeah but it would most certainly not be wired then.
Population density matters more then just size of the country when comparing stuff like this. - Rotzooi, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6Yay for Bush logic!

The problem with some religious countries, especially when it comes to the environment is that they have no problems with the planet turning to crap. as it follows there religious belief of Armageddon. - tian2992, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Where is Japan? They have 100Mb symmetrical lines. But their piracy policy sucks
- freebird09, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Don't you mean slide-rape?
- PabloMac, on 07/02/2008, -6/+9The rest of the world is going wireless.
- HappyScrappy, on 07/02/2008, -2/+5Iceland has 300,000 people in basically only two cities in a very small area. Wiring them all isn't at all difficult.
For that matter, why isn't Singapore on this list? - blackjack75, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Then divide every area in america into towns of 300k and do the same...
- benzzene, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3I think the cold weather has something to do with it: People in colder countries are (were) forced to live communally to better use their resources. It's cheaper and easier to heat one large house with five families than it is to heat 5 houses. This way of thinking extends to other issues in the Nordic countries. Here in Finland, most people I know are happy to pay taxes because they can see the benefit to *everyone* of public transport, clean streets, well-maintained parks, universal healthcare, generous maternity and paternity leave etc. These countries lean towards socialism. Look at the gradient as you go further to the south in Europe: Italy is much less community based.
- Rotzooi, on 07/02/2008, -2/+5No, that's just the one at number 9.
- Sunzi, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Do you even read what you write?
"it's cheaper and easier to heat one large house with five families than it is to heat 5 houses."
When did nordic people start living with 5 familys in one house?
You must be thinking of Africa, and thats way of (and warm)
But I think the socialism part is kinda right. - chrispix, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2I must still be half asleep, I thought it said weird. Good article anyway even though I was quite confused.
- oxymoron69, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2*****...
Niiiiiiice hahahahahahaha - robdiggity, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Yes, Sweden should consider decaf.
- swissla, on 07/02/2008, -4/+5My country is number 3 and we still can't operate an iPhone legally as of today.
- MCA2142, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Range Booster FTW!!!
- hakkola, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I'm surprised Finland isn't on that list. Vittu man.
- oxymoron69, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2So ummm, what's the immigration policies like in that part of the world?
Can I move there? North America is getting all ***** up because of these damn yanks! - acc355, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1You're being ripped off... I get 100/100 for 110 SKr/month ;)
- Noods, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Sorry, but I don't put much faith in ratings that base their scores in a whole country living at the same standard.
- Rabdsquirlz, on 07/02/2008, -7/+8No. 1 in wired countries AND wiretapped countries
- Sunzi, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Darn!
That meens I need do pirate twice as much as you do too keep it even :)
Btw you live in Sweden too?
If so which broadband company do you have? - dhs100, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1That would be true if cities in the US were more wired but they're not, even though they are infinitely more densely populated and the costs per person should be much lower. I visited Iceland - they're simply richer and prepared to invest a lot of money in infrastructure for really high speed connections...they also seem more organised than here in the UK and compared with the US. I get the feeling the warmer a place is, the lazier it is.
- hayzeus, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Damned vikings have ALWAYS been nothing but trouble.
- tian2992, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1@grylls
63% of statistics are made up ;) - HappyScrappy, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Who says US cities aren't wired? I don't know of a single person who lives in a US city (not town) who can't get high speed internet. It's the suburbs and urban areas here in the US that had problems, due to distance limitations on DSL and to a lesser extent, cable and economies of population density.
- bman1984, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1No, its due to a free market. DSL can go as far as they want it to go, they just need to build another CO. Companies would not lose money bring DSL to rural areas, they would just make more money investing that money elsewhere. And in comparison, high speed connections in most American cities are much slower than high speed connections in sweden.
- benzzene, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Sunzi, yes I do read what I write. Maybe you should. You might learn the difference between "of" and "off". There's no reason for you to take such an argumentative tone.
Perhaps the confusion is caused by the way we use the word "house" here. It can mean apartment block. It is a fact that most people in, for example, Helsinki live in apartment blocks where resources such as heating and water pipes are shared. This means that less infrastructure is required. That was my point, I'm sorry you failed to understand it. - Sunzi, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Nice timing, reading this and actually getting 100/100Mbit installed in my swedish apartment right this moment is kinda cool!
A question, how much does it cost in the US per month for 100/100Mbit ?
Here in sweden its 30$ per month - MadHyena, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0sure we have fast Internet but we still don't have movies/tv show on itunes or on xbox live which pisses me of i want to by movies on line.
- tian2992, on 07/02/2008, -5/+5I beg to differ:
