- Karmashock, on 11/05/2009, -23/+93Anyone that didn't think in the back of their mind "I bet it was a Muslim" is lying or lacking in imagination.
While some might want to spin that as a sign of pervasive racism/xenophobia... it's actually just a healthy dose of common sense.
It's not politically correct... it's just reality.
To balance the point, I generally assume all serial killers are white guys... because most of them are white guys. I assume most rapists are men... and I assume most school shootings are done by loser outcast kids...
Are you afraid an old lady will mug you... or six twentysomething guys at 2 in the morning? The same part of the brain that answers that question makes the assumption above.
Just an obvious point that increasingly needs to be made as people substitute political correctness for informed discretion. If you let PC think for you, you're not actually thinking... you're just running on doctrine like a 14th century Cardinal. - Troika37, on 11/05/2009, -20/+69Is it sad that the Muslim part doesn't surprise me anymore?
- adremali, on 11/06/2009, -3/+45as a muslim, i want to say... god damn it
- joeditto, on 11/06/2009, -18/+50All this talk about the shooter being a Muslim is open to question...
Timothy McVeigh (Bombed Oklahoma Govt. Bldg) wasn't a Muslim...he was an American Christian...does that make all American Christians evil?
How about the guy from Tenn.(forgot his name) who shot folks in Church...he was an American Christian. or Jeffery Delmar(Attempted assassination Pres.Reagan)...
Ted Kaczynski (UniBomber) ... all Christians
- Barbrady, on 11/05/2009, -15/+43Fox News just reported that he was a Muslim convert.
- Barbrady, on 11/05/2009, -2/+25ABC News just reported there was only 1 shooter. The other 2 that had been detained have been released.
- BasalCellBossk, on 11/06/2009, -9/+28This guy was a Major in the army.
If you !right wing crazies ignore that and don't question the reasons for his promotions, then you are hypocrites. You don't get promoted to Major for no reason. - bluto36, on 11/05/2009, -10/+28they have the other 2 conspirators in custody so before anyone jumps the gun lets see where this goes.
how will this be presented by the media, by our politicians? so many ways this can go.
- adremali, on 11/06/2009, -2/+19i'm muslim... and.. well.
me too :( - dandan111, on 11/05/2009, -9/+25Let's find out more about him, but Major Malik Nadal Hasan certainly sounds like an Arabic name and this makes it more difficult for Arabs or Muslims that want to join the service and help their country. They will be looked upon with suspicion even more now. And a psychiatrist? He must have been nuts.
- barkleydoom, on 11/06/2009, -2/+17He was being tracked by the FBI for the last 6 months because of sympathetic postings on messages board(s) about suicide bombings.
Even if he was angry about being name called, as reported. Even if he was scared of being deployed, as reported. Even if he was desperate about getting out of the military and hired a lawyer to help him, as reported.
I'm going to guess that he had some kind of jihadist issues going on in that head of his.
I don't think it's racist or anti-Muslim to say that it's not a surprise that it was a Muslim extremist who did this. It's the world we live in. Extremists are extremist. The people who should be THE MOST angry here are moderate Muslims. Rather than downplay the Muslim side of it and get overly defensive, moderate Muslims around the world need to become far more vocal and ACTIVE about the reality of the direction of Islam. It's been hijacked by a specific sect. Moderate Muslims better figure out how to crush it because especially in the U.S. and the UK, non-Muslims are going to become very vigilante about these things, with moderates on all sides getting sucked into a cycle of violence.
My 2 cents. - flip2trip, on 11/06/2009, -0/+14Did you mean PTSD?
- Samueul, on 11/06/2009, -2/+16quote from news article "Survivors of the rampage that killed 13 and wounded 30 said the suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, shouted "Allahu Akbar!" — "God is great!" in Arabic — before opening fire, base commander Lt. Gen. Robert Cone said."
But yeah, not motivated by religion at all, he was just scared to be deployed.....
WAKE THE ***** UP PEOPLE! - adremali, on 11/06/2009, -0/+13he's alive
- JDLamb88, on 11/06/2009, -7/+19I figured it was just some dude, and the fact that he is Muslim probably had nothing to do with this. Or am I missing all the reports of Al Qaeda sleeper cells who work their way up the ranks in the military and then go on shooting rampages with dual handguns, because that is the obvious style of a terrorist.
- Elohir, on 11/06/2009, -9/+19The definition of terrorist is not actually "muslim who flies planes into buildings".
True story. - bluto36, on 11/05/2009, -8/+18with all the assumptions i could have made, to be honest, Muslim was first but maybe PSTD. as soon as it was confirmed more then one shooter i knew it was not a PSTD shooting.
- Trick07, on 11/06/2009, -2/+12The gunman did not die and since we have plenty of people saying he did this because he was taunted it would be safe to assume we will want to prosecute somebody to please the "it's not his fault" crowd.
- Isenborg, on 11/06/2009, -2/+12A muslim kills Americans and Alheithinn thinks "the Right' is attacking islam. Funny, but sad.
We are surrounded by mosques in this country. Americans aren't attacking them, we're (rightly) protecting them. That's what honorable people do. Next time you see a right winger, left winger or any American waltz into a crowd of innocent muslims and explode or start killing indiscriminately, you let me know Alheithinn. I'll be the first to condemn it. - Phaedryn, on 11/06/2009, -7/+17"Why not Christian converts? I am willing to lay odds that more murders are commited daily in the U.S. by professed Christians than Muslims"
Irrelivant unless you can show that their being christian is somehow a factor in the murders. Islamic terrorists do what they do BECAUSE they are islamic, not in spite of it. - Navicerts, on 11/06/2009, -3/+13The dude is still alive. Why not just ask him what his motivation was instead of all this speculative conjecture?
- Samueul, on 11/06/2009, -2/+11Digg me down all you want... What was the guy saying in Arabic while shooting and killing his fellow soldiers?
- shinveritas, on 11/06/2009, -2/+11I agree with you completely, but lets include a non-theist to show no bias against religion, ok?
Timothy McVeigh was raised Roman Catholic as a boy, but later became Agnostic, and before the bombings said that "Science is my religion".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_McVeigh - SpectreFire, on 11/06/2009, -8/+17Do people not even read these articles anymore?
Even the military is pretty sure that this isn't an act of terrorism.
"Hasan's cousin Nader Hasan said that she believed it was his upcoming deployment combined with the wartime horror stories he heard from his patients that set him off. "
That seems like the most likely reason why he went all gun crazy. The man's an army phychiatrist, It's a wonder that all the ***** he's heard didn't set him off sooner. - joshmoney, on 11/06/2009, -1/+10I'm not really taking either side here but how could you possibly know that there are absolutely no active cells in the US? It seems that you're making quite a leap in your assumptions unless you have some sort of information that everyone else is not privy to...
- DrCraigis, on 11/06/2009, -2/+11Most psychs I've met (and I've met a lot professionally) are a little loopy. I have nothing against the mental health professions, I think most of them truly do help their patients. But as the saying goes, it takes crazy to know crazy.
- card51short, on 11/06/2009, -13/+22mooslims are coming to git ya! Dey is evil!!1!
- coheedcollapse, on 11/06/2009, -17/+25Are we seriously not beyond this? You know that Islam is the second most followed religion in the world, right? Does that mean that the billion plus people that follow are all homicidal maniacs?
Since Gacy, those two kids who shot up Columbine, and the unabomber were all white, am I going to kill kids and blow up buildings?
Why does there have to be a reason other than "that is one seriously ***** up person" when someone goes on a rampage like this? The guy snapped, it wouldn't have mattered if he were Christian with a name like Bob Jones, he would have snapped just the same. - NorthMass, on 11/06/2009, -1/+9you are never going to close up the border completely unless you fully militarize it, and I don't want to live in East Berlin version 2.0. The solution is to get rid of almost all gun control so if some nutjob starts shooting people then they won't be afraid to shoot back with intent to kill before the nutjob kills 12 people like this guy did. I don't know if people were allowed to have guns at this military base in the living grounds, but in general people who go on killing sprees do so when people are unarmed.
- bluto36, on 11/05/2009, -13/+21dont worry it wont take long to find a way to blame America for this
- joeditto, on 11/06/2009, -8/+16Does it really make a difference as to why they committed these acts?...the end results are the same...murder is murder...my point was we didn't blame the entire Christian followers, for the acts of a few. So, I feel for you and your lack of common sense...
BTW...at this point I haven't heard that the ***** Alik Hasan murdered in the name of his religion...or are you assuming he did?
FYI...I'm a moderate. - zoomaKabu, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8Yeah, it really ***** matters.
- Expl0siv0, on 11/06/2009, -8/+16Karmashock
The thought in the back of my mind was, "Wow this guys an idiot." It surprises me that so many people easily jump to "he must be this religion/race/sex." I don't care where you come from, who you pray to, or whatever...if you kill people you're a ***** moron regardless.
Maybe I'm just too PC though? Right? - Samueul, on 11/06/2009, -2/+10Mark my words, by this time tomorrow morning this guy will be the victim of "Racist America", meanwhile the biggest domestic terrorist attack since 9/11 has been pulled off.
- Isenborg, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8You are completely correct.
- swantamer, on 11/06/2009, -3/+10Why is the mass media so tireless in not reporting the truth about how ***** up the islamofascists are? Every single American should be going to jihadwatch every day and see what these evil sons of bitches are doing to try to kill every single one of us.
- bluto36, on 11/06/2009, -8/+15Atta boy Iron way to ***** on the dead bodies while they are still warm. POS!
- Kent4jmj, on 11/06/2009, -13/+20If the Muslim connection is a dead end OK
But we should seriously take into consideration that there are active "cells" in this country that are armed and ready to go. To think otherwise is extremely naive and stupid. But hey lets just leave that Mexican border wide open indefinitely. - biblebelter, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7well witnesses are reporting he screamed "allah akbar" or whatever before he started methodically shooting people so imho his religion is relevant.
- hasab, on 11/06/2009, -2/+9@coheedcollapse
I was reading some of your comments, and was overwhelmed by the naivety of the comments. Why don’t you trying picking up a Koran and reading it before you make some of your comments. I know you have never read the Koran. There are different English translations of the Koran, some more extreme translations than others. The one thing that all translations have in common is that they are filled mandates for vigilante justice, inhumane punishment, jihad (in all meanings of the word), deception, inequality in life & justice, and hate for atheist, Christians, and Jews. You would have found all these things in context without cherry picking.
Take this challenge—Next time you are in a bookstore. Find a Koran (Qur’an). Open it to any page at random. Read three pages, and see if you find any of the aforementioned Islamic mandates. I do not think you will find any love or peace. Try it a few times. You may be shocked at what you find.
My only hope is that most Muslims are like many Christians, in that they identify them selves as Muslim, but are not practicing, having never actually picked up a Koran.
As for your crusades comment, the crusades happened in a time where the majority was illiterate and the clergy were powerful and corrupt. One could also by an indulgence in those times. If you have read the Bible, there are no provisions for purchasing a ticket to heaven. "inquisition, witch hunts, or the crusades."--all these things occurred out ignorance of the written text.
Check out the latest news. It is starting to look like this was motivated by Islamic extremism. - detwiljp, on 11/06/2009, -1/+8Capital punishment for this guy please...
- fadeout, on 11/06/2009, -6/+13You people are still pouring in here claiming that this wasn't Muslim terrorism? It's already been released that the FBI had a file on him for visiting Jihadi chatrooms and talking about martyrdom.
Keep burying your heads in that sand! You can claim all you want that there isn't a religiously motivated fifth column in this country but the facts speak for themselves. - Isenborg, on 11/06/2009, -3/+10If you are blind enough to think his muslim beliefs are irrelevant, pick up a newspaper once in a while. Just try to get through one without seeing 10 stories on islamic butchery in this country and abroad, and that is with our media downplaying it as much as possible. Imagine the peace in the world if muslims stopped killing in the name of Allah for ONE damn day. If you think racism, honor killings, acid throwing, beheadings, mortar attacks launched from schools, and the outright subjugation of women are all part of a healthy belief system then you need to reevaluate. Good muslims, I know you are out there. When are you going to get some balls, stand up, and wrest your religion and your honor from this sick spiral. Allah not only sees those who do bad in his name, but also those who stand complacently and watch.
- FritoPendejo, on 11/06/2009, -2/+9Yes, Digg is so full of conservatives... except that almost all of the articles are pro Obama/Democrat.
- PWUJF41, on 11/06/2009, -2/+9Just because you don't agree with their views (I assume all of the time) doesn't mean that they aren't reporting correct news. There doesn't seem to be any reason for them to screw this one up.
- GorfTron, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7When people should "Allah Akbar!" while killing, it is hard for human beings not to make a connection. I just can't think of any mass murderers who should "Praise Jesus" while killing people. I am not claiming a connection to the religion itself, but yelling your religions praises while killing is going to leave an impression.
- cp101, on 11/06/2009, -26/+33I dunno Digg, George W. Bush is a pretty White, Christian name and that ***** is one of the biggest terrorists of the 21st Century.
- SMFH1, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Born and reared in Virginia, the son of immigrant parents from a small Palestinian town near Jerusalem, he joined the Army right out of high school, against his parents’ wishes. The Army, in turn, put him through college and then medical school, where he trained to be a psychiatrist.
- superdriver, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Two wrongs don't make a right. Some Christians do commit violent heinous crimes. However, they don't tend to do it simply because they're Christian. There's the difference, Muslims behave in this way in the name of Islam, anyone who isn't a Muslim is hated by them.
- adremali, on 11/06/2009, -3/+9i'm a muslim and i'm a nice lonely digger just like you :(
