And I see no other religion in this day and age that steeps to such tactics.- wrs123, on 04/18/2008, -1/+2This is true, I don't see why other Muslims don't speak out against these acts. It seems like you can relate economics to the fact that no other religion has such violent extremists though. Though I don't know any numbers, it seems that the majority of muslims (Arab muslims anyways) live in a pretty impoverished state, and therefore it makes it easier to lash out against other cultures/religions better off than they and use their religion as a conduit despite the fact that they distort what their religion is truly about in order to lash out the way they do

- agentshiro, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1Someone who sets up a bomb in a crowded marketplace is no different than someone who runs in there with the bomb on their chest. These guys (meaning terrorists, not Muslims) think by dying while killing innocent people, they'll be rewarded in heaven. Paul Jennings Hill, a member of Army of God, "expected a great reward in Heaven". Someone could argue, well that has nothing do with anything, because the Army of God isn't Christian; well, in my book (no pun intended), someone who blows themselves in the name of Islam, isn't a Muslim.

- wrs123, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3I'm glad someone else hasn't lumped extremists into the entire body of Islam. Spread the word, we don't need this to turn into any more of a culture war than it is.

- Baloo52, on 04/18/2008, -1/+0Please...'Letting them be' isn't an option...and nor is military occupation of Iraq. The kind of extremism seen in the Middle East didn't develop overnight or start when George Bush invaded.
We've been letting them be for years and it has only led to extremism, oppression, and anti-western sentiment...The only time we've been involved is to broker oil deals or to give them guns to fight our enemies (funny how we bought the Afghanis guns, and now we fund the very extremism we're fighting through our oil consumption.) We need to offer educational incentives and ways to help them develop their economies slowly weening them off dependence on oil alone. Look at all the business going on in Dubai today and where it is in terms of freedom and the lack of extremism, there's no reason that can't be status quo for all the Middle East.
All of us (including the extremists) just need to start realizing that books are much more effective educational tool than guns...- 1timeuser, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1We never should have gone anyway. Some of you are going to think of me as heartless but... IT'S NOT OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO WATCH OVER/ TRY TO CONTROL THE WORLD. WE'VE GOT ENOUGH PROBLEMS IN OUR OWN COUNTRY AS IT IS!

You need a ***** history lesson. America - ***** with the Middle East since 1953!
- MacEnvy, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2I agree. There's no good answer, but I am absolutely certain that the wrong answer is to spend a few more trillion dollars of our tax money by keeping us there (a la McCain), when the infrastructure and potential of our own nation is crumbling under the effort.
Also, I'd rather my uncle not have to go to Iraq for a FOURTH tour with the Air Guard. His family needs him right now more than the Iraqi government does, and we're continually making the US less safe by taking sides in the conflict.

- mrzack, on 04/18/2008, -11/+5The US govt treats is marines and soldiers like crap. Poison them with depleted uranium, agent orange. The Walter Reed debacle, suicide rates going up, multiple deployments, having to buy their own armor, lack of armor for Humvees, depression rates at an all time high, mental instability... while the rich industrialists sit and sip their red wine. The screwed soldiers should take up arms and chase the Fascists out of the white house and Pentagon, but probably Blackwater would be called in to shoot at our troops. ***** this Government.
- wrs123, on 04/18/2008, -1/+1The unfortunate thing is that soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen have been dealing with bad politics ***** them over forever. The only difference now is that people are becoming aware of it because of advances in media distribution. If Congressmen would grow some nuts, forget about winning that next election, and actually try to agree for the sake of getting SOMETHING done, this wouldn't be such a problem. Where is the political courage nowadays? Correction: when are we going to get some political courage EVER?
- Tyorant, on 04/18/2008, -2/+1You people always have something to complain about. Maybe look at some of the good ways your government treats the troops, or would that make your argument too balanced for you?

- talonstriker, on 04/18/2008, -2/+5They probly are. But there is no way in hell that a military force that is less than 1% of Iraq's population can be atop of everything. On top of that, this is guerilla warfare we're talking about. Modern military systems don't match up very well against such tactics. (I think a modern military has beaten guerillas only a few times...the taliban and in south africa come to mind)
- mike17032, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3Yes, this is clearly their fault.

Look, I can see the point of roadside bombs and suicide bombing Us troops and whatnot ( as sick and disturbing as they are at least I see the point of them) but what point does bombing a funeral serve? was it merely to try and make people fearful of helping us or something? I fail to see how something like this garners sympathy with anyone unless they are trying to blame it on someone else? My sympathy goes out to everyone injured / killed by this. Bunch of assholes are ruining it for everyone over there.
- wrs123, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2You hit it on the head with the scare tactics. They know that most of the people in Iraq won't side with them based on logic because their mindset is completely illogical and Iraqis don't want another totalitarian regime keeping them under its thumb again. Therefore, the only way they can get support is by scaring the ***** out of them. Join or die type of situation.
- sin2051, on 04/18/2008, -0/+4i wonder what'll happen at those 49 peoples' funerals
- hypodan, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1The possibilities are almost endless.
- IHaveCrayons, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2I think this was the most probable thing to happen given the turn of events. The Awakening groups really are undermining the insurgency foothold in Iraq. Usually, it's just Sunnis killing Shiites. With the recent order of attack on Shiite militia (even though many security forces quit) there may very well be a turning point in Iraq. Both Sunni and Shiite seem to be slowly coming together for a common goal. Of course, the armed Awakening groups may very well turn into an armed militia group it does show that Iraq is maybe moving away from its usual ethnic fighting. No longer is it Shiite versus Sunni which, in my mind, is a good step.
- wrs123, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1Well put
- hellotyler, on 04/18/2008, -1/+1I predict attacks will steadily increase as the election grows closer and closer. I'm not exactly sure how this will effect them, it could go either way. :( How lame. Let's just let them sort their own ***** out, now that Saddam is out of the picture.
- wrs123, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1If we let them try to sort their own ***** out now while their military/police force is barely on its feet (if at all), they will just get another Saddam. Thats what these groups that plan these bombings are after. They want power. They want it so bad they will convince their minions to kill themselves in order to scare the ever living ***** out of anyone that opposes them.
- turbakt, on 04/18/2008, -1/+2Overkill.

- diggrific, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1The surge targeted Bagdad. This occurred in Northern Iraq.

- nydwarf, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3What kind of ***** goes to a funeral to blow people up? Talk about twisted.
- Wrangler76, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2For those thinking that it was just your everyday funeral bombing: "Survivors said the funeral had been for two members of a U.S.-backed neighborhood security unit who were killed on Wednesday. "
Very evil and twisted, but effective. They're basically threatening new recruits with potential harm to their family if they join the US-backed security forces.- Seipher, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1But i wonder how many new recruits they will get from the families that lost people who WEREN'T part of the security force? Attacks like these do spawn fear, but they also spawn a sense of retribution.
- hybridcreation, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2"They're basically threatening new recruits with potential harm to their family if they join the US-backed security forces."
