- toetagger, on 07/28/2008, -11/+107I appreciate it when they fight for our freedom, but nobody is threatening freedom here but our own administration.
- Ninh, on 07/28/2008, -6/+43Does sound like a government program if less than 6% of those who called could be kept from suicide.
- tvanwyk, on 07/28/2008, -14/+51Of course somebody's gotta come and make the obligatory "love the troops" comment. Give it a rest. Can't people just stop with the lip service and admit war is ***** up?
- imacommi, on 07/28/2008, -1/+29You need to go back to math class....
- Jexie, on 07/29/2008, -4/+29Not one single life lost in Iraq had anything to do with protecting your freedom.
- spinchange, on 07/28/2008, -5/+26Speaking as someone who has personally lost someone in this war and knows a lot of people who've served multiple tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan - I'd just like to point something out to you. Do you think everyone whose in the armed service (or is supportive of them) is a knuckle-dragging buffoon unaware that this war and the present administration is wholly "***** up?" Seriously?
You think YOU get it, but they don't? A lot of people are more acutely aware and cognitively dissonant about this than you can even possibly imagine...but hey, Thanks for reminding everyone of blindingly obvious!
Whether or not you know it, this crap and the "oh people like to be dominated" and "yellow ribbons are phony" crowd are parroting the lip service. The truth is far more complicated and painful. I don't expect you guys understand that, but felt it needed to be said. - SolidSnak, on 07/29/2008, -4/+22"More than 22,000 veterans have sought help from a special suicide hot line in its first year, and 1,221 suicides have been averted, the government says."
.....there were 20,779 suicides? - dildobaggins, on 07/29/2008, -6/+18More than 22,000 veterans have sought help from a special suicide hot line in its first year, and 1,221 suicides have been averted, the government says?
Damn, that's a pretty ***** survival rate.
20,000 more reasons to hate Bush - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 07/28/2008, -1/+13Nice to see that help is available for those who need it.
- lazerus9, on 07/28/2008, -17/+29Soldiers!...Don't even think about killing yourselves!
Your willingness to sacrifice your life for what you believe is a courageous and noble quality, but taking your own life is not!
If you have done things that you are ashamed of, you have a lifetime to make amends and find peace. You have been deceived and betrayed by those whom you have trusted, but when you reach the understanding that it is "they"! who lack moral character and not you, your process of healing will begin.
Many Americans have now come to the realization that we have all been victims of very sophisticated psychological warfare. Many of the younger troops were the victims of psychological desensitization to killing, through video games and military propaganda.
Seek help outside of typical government controlled resources, they are not there to help you!
You should now put all of your energy into healing, educating yourself and maybe helping others who are feeling as you do.
PTSD really means that despite the psychological onslaught, your conscience and spirit have survived! - newl, on 07/29/2008, -1/+13Ya know what pisses me off? When people throw around the word "war" as though it was declared. "War" was waged, not declared by Congress. We merely invaded another sovereign nation. Something tells me that the President forgot all about the War Powers Act of 1973.
I was in the first Gulf conflict and I didn't come out suicidal nor did anyone else I knew. Granted, we do not talk about it often but still we came out clean. It is unfortunate that our existing soldiers have to be put through this nonsense that the current (and previous) administration have put them (and myself) through.
Less than 10% averted isn't all that great a number but at least it's something and the support is there for those in need. - themonkman, on 07/29/2008, -1/+12As an Army veteran myself, I also appreciate the sacrifices that my brothers and sisters in arms make for our country. I'm just extremely saddened that the Bush administration has decided to use them as cannon fodder for corrupted policies and political propaganda.
- calebian, on 07/28/2008, -6/+17Those deaths should be directly linked to the Bush Administration. So far 4,000 American soldiers have died because of the war? Lets not forget the suicides, due to the sheer trauma experienced in this bloody conflict that involves the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians. The Bush Administration should face punishment for their crimes.
- slifty, on 07/28/2008, -1/+11spinchange - I think they are complaining that a lot of people spout these phrases mindlessly. Words like that are often brandished around divisively to generate a fervor of support for an unpopular war in the name of the soldiers who are forced to fight.
I haven't made sacrifices for this war, but I can still recognize when the well-being of our soldiers has been bastardized.
And no, I absolutely don't think that everyone who says these things is full of it. I just suspect that a fair amount are. - Spor, on 07/29/2008, -1/+11Could have done without blaming video games.
- active1x0, on 07/28/2008, -6/+16Surprise! War destroys people. Did you need a Yahoo article to tell you this?
- peestandingup, on 07/29/2008, -2/+12Why dont you ask God to stop unnecessary wars.
- kemp34, on 07/28/2008, -5/+14Just another example of the horrors associated with an unjust, unconstitutional and inanely devised war. I feel for these individuals who wanted to act honorably, but are being led by human trash. This is a clear source of anomie, one of the most documented causes of suicide.
- Urbalist, on 07/29/2008, -1/+10Iraq isn't about freedom. Americans haven't had to fight for freedom since the revolutionary war. Iraq is about Oil, Greed and corrupt politics. If we wanted to fight for our freedom then we would have stopped bush from giving more power to the telecoms industries and from allowing warrant less wiretapping. Those who would give up freedom for security don't deserve freedom at all eh? Seems to me like most Americans don't understand that they are sheep and the Shepard is a wolf in political clothing.
- geminus, on 07/29/2008, -1/+10Support? Hah... you're often lucky to get a one week TAP (Transitional Assistance Program) class. The military is one of the worst corporations in the US. Its the only corporation that can hide behind the veil of 'National Security', send people on suicide tasks (missions)... all for the greed of the powers that be. Though I have profound respect for my fellow vets, I have gone through this machine and am thankful that I left... and so is my family. Except for my father and my brother... both of whom are now dead. You want energy for a revolution... look at +4,000 caskets coming back from Iraq that the media can't show.
- xDynaBlade, on 07/28/2008, -1/+9I thought they were supposed to be confidential?
- gasoline, on 07/29/2008, -2/+10Fail. Not all of them stood an inch away from suicide and were talked out of it.
- theghoul, on 07/29/2008, -3/+11I was over there in 2004. ***** that war.
- SpiderBoar, on 07/28/2008, -0/+8So is this only Americans? or does it include anyone who has been to the war?
- thecatcantalk, on 07/28/2008, -10/+18Nope. Because you can bet your next 5 paychecks that the guy who made the comment has never served, never will, and doesn't have any kids in the Army, either.
He likes being dominated, though. He keeps a police nightstick in his sock drawer for, you know..."guests". The ones he meets at the Greyhound station. - apothekari, on 07/29/2008, -1/+8@destron
The Land and the King Are One.
twas always thus and ere shall it be. - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -2/+9Oh, I thought this was a hotline where vets could call suicide girls...
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -2/+8I'm a vet and I find your comment lame.
Paging Dr. Redthumb... - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -1/+7Believe me, a fictional story isn't going to help anyone.
- halogenik, on 07/29/2008, -0/+6That's a bit of an unfair comment. It's extremely difficult to take phone calls from strangers on the brink of killing themselves, and without knowing about them or their current situation, try to emphasize with that person over the phone well enough to get them to realize they have something to live for.
I can't imagine the type of stress the employees, and sometimes volunteers of these suicide hot lines have to go through. It's a heavy burden to carry, knowing that you're a last hope for a person that's about to kill themselves. - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -1/+7NO.
They've been lied to enough by the government. - innocentsinner, on 07/29/2008, -0/+6I'm more of a fan of GodsGirls but, dammit, easy access to pierced and tattooed crazy girls should be in our Constitution.
- xonahuia, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6The troops are not in Iraq to fight for our freedom and the troops know this very well that's probably a significant reason why they're suicidal
- Jexie, on 07/29/2008, -3/+8Voting for Nader = more votes for McSame, votes for Nader will keep America in Iraq.
- MenthiX, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6Would probably have prevented more deaths.
- Murrabbit, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6Nonsense. The liberals invented PTSD to slander the troops. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go back to watching Fox News!
- littlejoe, on 07/29/2008, -3/+7That's 22,000 Americans that realized they made a huge mistake when they signed on the dotted line.
We can praise them for fighting for "freedom" or we can hate on them for voluntarily joining in an unjust war... but like ALL OF US they were misled in the post-911 washington spin-fest too. They signed a contract under false pretenses, just like all the democrats are bellowing out, however the soldiers don't have the option of changing sides or backing out.
I can't really throw my support their way in the slightest, but I do feel very sympathetic for their situation. - vrbanabanana, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4That is an unfair comment. I was a Resident Assistant back in college and dealing with someone about to commit suicide has to be one of the hardest things I've ever done. It was hard enough trying to work through the situation in person. I can't even imagine how hard it would be to try to work the person through it over the phone without knowing anything about them.
Dugg and Kudos to those who help hurting people through terrible situations. - ancientshoes, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4just imagine what it was like in Vietnam and WW2 back when they didn't have all the conveniences of today
- jshooter1377, on 07/29/2008, -3/+7So does this mean they failed to prevent 20,779 suicides?
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -1/+5Makes sense. Being in a war should be rather depressing. More than any other job, at least.
- paradexes, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4I dugg it up for the point he was trying to make.
The OP made it sound like the rest killed themselves :S If that was the case it would be really disturbing. - withears, on 07/29/2008, -2/+6And McCain is voting against benefits for veterans.
What a DAMN hypocrite John McCain is.
How could someone vote for McCain and look themselves in a mirror? - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4I've served 22 months in Iraq and am totally disgusted by your far-left, liberal view about things. I appreciate your kind words in regards to my fellow veterans, but only wish you would open your eyes about what is really going on with the war and not blind yourself with the "Bush is the devil" rhetoric.
Trust me, I don't like Bush either, but I would appreciate it if you would open your eyes about what is going on.
God bless,
Jonathan - halogenik, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4I'm with you on the overall point of your message, but please don't categorize video games with the rest of what you said. A lot of soldiers kill themselves over the "horrors of man" they have had to endure, whether it is shooting a man in the head or watching their platoon being gunned down. It's not only about personal shame about they have done, as you put it.
Also, I wouldn't try to discourage people from seeking any help, whether it be government controlled or not. I'm a liberal, just like I presume you are, but I don't think you should let your personal feeling about the war and the government sway someone from getting legitimate help, especially if that means saving their life. - innocentsinner, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4What about "suicide hot line operator"?
- ElTomacco, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4Dude, ***** you.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4My heart goes out to any man or woman that chooses to defend our country and must try to re-integrate back into society after the horrors they witness- Most men never did recover from their post-traumatic stress from Vietnam- I think the fed bastards to should do more for the mental health of our veterans.
- DaHuuuuuudge, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4I was with you until you brought up video games. Buried as inaccurate.
