- captainbethany, on 03/04/2009, -2/+106A heartbreaking story, indeed. It was truly just as depressing to hear about the horrors in Sudan from the soldier's point of view. That place is hell on earth for those poor people.
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 03/04/2009, -7/+103Excuse me while I got throw up now.
- volume4, on 03/04/2009, -3/+88This is sick. I cannot understand why people feel the need to treat each other this way. And especially the most innocent.

We are quick to cry out about the injustice but who will to go there to stop it? - johnwiz, on 03/04/2009, -7/+62humans suck
- Fuckmypooplease, on 03/04/2009, -1/+47What the ***** could you do in that situation? No matter what actions you take you'll either be dead or have allowed others to continue.
The injustice is sickening. - inactive, on 03/04/2009, -1/+38Sad but true.
- mmittimm, on 03/04/2009, -9/+41Quit with the WTF already.
- Solkre, on 03/04/2009, -1/+31He was threatened with death more than simply ordered.
Internet tough guys will say they'd stand up and be shot before they'd do something like that; but in reality they'd do the same. - PizzaEagle, on 03/04/2009, -5/+35The non-muslim rebels use the same tactics. No one religion has a monopoly on *****-up *****.
- mmittimm, on 03/04/2009, -7/+37Nothing. We're not a world police force.
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -6/+34It was the pressure of evangelical Christians who got Bush to commit the first troops, under UN auspices, to Sudan. So yes, we are doing something about it. Also, aid to Africa was at record levels under Bush -- quite a few children are named after him over there. You ignorant leftists can shut up now.
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -5/+30The bastions of muslim civil rights had this to say about Sudan.....

- jseres, on 03/04/2009, -9/+30Your absolutely right and don't let anyone else make you think otherwise. The reason we are in the mess we are in today is because we have been trying to maintain balance everywhere else in the world but have done little in our own ***** country.
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -7/+28Jesus ***** Christ, that's sick.
- MahirH, on 03/04/2009, -0/+21The same tactic was used in Bosnia. The intent is to terrorize.
- asnider, on 03/04/2009, -3/+23This has far more to do with politics and ethnic conflict than it does with religion.
- luvbuzd, on 03/04/2009, -2/+21Several years of social work in NJ have taught me that we need not look all the way to the Sudan to find people that rape children. It's more common than everyone thinks. We need to be aware of the atrocities that occur around the world, but we also need to be more conscious of the crimes against humanity that occur next door (maybe THEN child welfare workers will be paid more than $35K/year to do a grueling job and BETTER people will do the work)... I'll get off my soapbox now.
- GamerXR72, on 03/04/2009, -0/+19You're mistaken. It was the "They will tie to to a tree and let burning car tire rubber drip on me for hours if I don't do it" excuse.
There's a difference between following orders and "If you don't rape her I will torture and kill you" and knowing that they really will torture and kill you.
Buried. - amcnair, on 03/04/2009, -21/+39Funny, the story doesn't mention the religious background of Omar al-Bashir, the president and commander-in-chief of the Sudanese forces. It also doesn't mention what religion guides the government there.
Considering the fact that Sudan is an Islamist state, you'd think that would be an important piece of background. - maz2331, on 03/04/2009, -4/+22Civil wars are always the most brutal ones.
- Scrappy1850, on 03/04/2009, -1/+19well, ask yourself. what would you prefer if you were the victim?
- pathouston22, on 03/04/2009, -5/+23We send billions and billions of dollars of aid and food to Africa. Its about time they help themselves first.
- R34C7, on 03/04/2009, -1/+18Instinctual protectivism toward children and their inability to protect themselves to start...
- amcnair, on 03/04/2009, -1/+17It's a blog about the reporter's experience, not a fully-formed article. It is intended to portray the author's feelings about the process of interviewing a subject, unlike a typical news article. Sort of a behind-the-scenes featurette.
If I was in his shoes and wasn't overwrought, I'd question my own sanity. - VaginaDrum, on 03/04/2009, -2/+16This doesn't come as a great shock, I'm sad to say.
- du4l1ty, on 03/04/2009, -1/+15Pfft ***** that. I'd do a back flip and throw a hatchet at him.. It would probably only work once, but the whole Sudanese military would probably ***** themselves and put a bullet in their collective heads instead of suffering my wrath.
/s - EzraSchwartz, on 03/04/2009, -2/+16I think governments are made to do things collectively that individuals can't do, like fight wars and stuff. I'm not saying we should be fighting one or anything but saying he should either go do some vigilante justice or shut up is a little silly.
- bushidomonk, on 03/04/2009, -3/+17I'm not sure I believe this soldier when he says he did not actually commit rape. Although I'm pretty sure he wishes he could believe himself.
This stands to show how "proactive" the international community is when it comes to countries with no resources to offer to the rest of the world, as was the case in Rwanda 10 years before that. - DeusGear, on 03/04/2009, -2/+16It's not an excuse. Various psychological tests have proven that human will is very very weak and will bend easily under authority and in mass.
- BoxAdorable, on 03/04/2009, -4/+18You're an idiot.
- noisician, on 03/04/2009, -9/+22i never fully understood drawing such a strong line between children and adults. why aren't adults just as "innocent" and deserving not to be raped or murdered as kids?
if you walk down a street and rape & murder a random woman, how is she somehow "not innocent" and somewhat deserving of such treatment? - alexawesome, on 03/04/2009, -1/+14i'm not a dude, so i can't say, but if you see a screaming, crying child, do you get turned on? Can you force yourself under military order to get aroused, or do you just pray they won't notice you're miming the act? We all pray he's telling the truth. We can probably never know for sure. There are plenty of women and children who are being raped - whether by him or other people? Who knows. We are capable of great and terrible things, each and every one of us.
- mustang460, on 03/04/2009, -0/+13As we learned from the Milgram experiment around 50% of people will torture or kill if ordered by someone with authority over them.
Now in that study the authoritative figure was simply the scientist who recruited you, in real life the ones ordering these atrocities will kill you if you disobey orders, so surely those numbers will go way up.
Put yourself in their shoes, once you get in that situation however you did and your ordered to rape or kill a child. if you decide to kill the one who gave the order, you will die. you will be committing suicide and in fact the punishment may not be as 'simple' as just death. You could be tortured as a way of preventing this from happening again. In that position in that moment you will do what is ordered without question, as would anyone not on the verge of suicide anyway. - inactive, on 03/04/2009, -2/+15I don't want to agree with you.
- MacEnvy, on 03/04/2009, -6/+19Why? It doesn't have anything to do with the teachings of Islam - it's just despots and dirtbags. If the country involved was predominantly Christian, would you be upset that they didn't mention it in the article? I'm guessing not.
I'm not standing up for Islam. I just don't think it's inherently any worse than Christianity or Judaism when it comes to the actions of its members. - MoClippa, on 03/04/2009, -1/+13EffYoo, The "Arab" Muslims are just as black as the Africans. Sudan is just a messed up country where one group of people in a specific region with much of the wealth attempted to differentiate themselves by maintaining an "Arab" ethnicity, in order to justify punishing people that were of similar color to themselves in order to monopolize their resources. Sure they may be Muslim as well, but this is certainly an ethnic conflict that plays out along religious overtones, its a struggle for politics and who is control, and thus when one group mobilizes people around ethnic identity or religion, and in response so must other groups if they are going to survive. Its a sad fate in these countries but thats usually how these conflicts end up.
I know a Sudanese girl, she's black as night, dates another Sudanese boy. However her mother describes them as being "Arab" and calls the boy a "*****" quite often. It's all a bunch of class supremacy justified on the basis of imagined ethnicity. And you shouldn't think the rebel government is any better, they are all corrupt. However those bastards in the Northern government are finally getting put to task now that their president was declared a war criminal... sadly that will just mean that the rebels are going to get cast as the 'good' guys and the northern government as the 'bad' guys. This runs a lot deeper then good and evil, the entire society needs rehabilitation and economic restructuring. - tienm23, on 03/04/2009, -1/+13Darfur is hell...so is Haiti...so are many regions of the world.
I am not religious at all but I don't think that it is God that is raping and killing people, but evil people. It is our collective ignorance and indifference to the plight of these people that things like this are allowed to happen.
We go on and on about how progressive and caring we western nations are, yet turn a blind eye to these occurrences everyday while we catch up on American Idol and the latest in the Rhianna-Chris Brown saga.
This is less about God and more about weakness of man. - ApokalypseNow, on 03/04/2009, -0/+12Civil war, which is anything but...
- black27696, on 03/04/2009, -7/+19I'm reminded of the "we shouldn't force our culture on them" argument that many use against going in to Iraq or Afghanistan.
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -9/+21You won't hear a word from the UN. It's not like it's Israel. Besides, they have 57 members (same number as Heinz, and the states that Obama visited) who will slam you down if they attempt to say anything.
- poidh, on 03/04/2009, -0/+12The US wanted the UN to send in troops to protect the Darfur people, but Russia and China blocked the proposal.
I know that China has massive oil investments in Sudan and supplies the army with weapons, which explains their stance, but I am not aware of any Russian interest. However since they voted against the motion, and since Russia is known to vote for money or to piss of the US, there will be some reason for it. - Bakorork, on 03/04/2009, -2/+13From Wikileaks, I gather that the UN exists as a tool to pump money into conflict regions.
- Rivfader, on 03/04/2009, -1/+11The UN are a bunch of pussies
- Refaelo, on 03/04/2009, -14/+24OMG x 2!
And what are we doing about that? - artfiend77, on 03/04/2009, -6/+15Nothing, they don't have oil.
- pathouston22, on 03/04/2009, -7/+16I joined a group on Facebook. Yeah baby!
