- futureisours, on 10/12/2007, -6/+346Stories like this make me believe in such things as altruism and sacrifice, despite what I see in the media and from circumstances around me. If I had to die, what better way than to go down saving others? Rest in peace, my friend.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+267That man is a hero.
- ninephoenixes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+205@CatalystDM
I wager this guy deserves all the dupes he gets. - Homerr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+133"Hero" is thrown about too casually these days, but this guy is the real deal.
- xabstract, on 10/12/2007, -3/+118This is the first time I got a tear in my eye since the event. When the widow said, "I lost my best friend". RIP Prof Librescu
anyone notice his last name says "rescu" in it? Thats pretty cool. - wm2010russ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+109They should name the engineering building after him
- masterkenobi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+90Rest in peace, Liviu Librescu. You're a true hero.
- DaChew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+78If this story is true (and I have no reason to believe otherwise) Liviu Librescu should be immediately awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom - The highest medal of honor that a civilian can be awarded.
- fcdsbh07, on 10/12/2007, -4/+56I'm a piece of ***** in comparison. I just finished eating a Snickers bar, and will continue mindlessly surfing the net while watching the Cubs, all to avoid doing work that just needs to get done.
I admire people who have their priorities in order, regardless of what they are. I hope to hell that in a similar situation, I do what I think is right. I'd hate to come out of it, either way, thinking "damn, i wish i didn't just freeze." Whether its running away, saving one person, or taking bullets to save others, I hope I actually just do something. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43I'm speechless What a man.
- jenel, on 10/12/2007, -8/+50Stories like this make me proud I'm a Romanian (Liviu Librescu was born and raised in Romania, after which he emigrated in Israel and then USA).
God rest his soul in peace. He was a hero. - plsailboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38What pisses me off most about this whole thing is how much of a coward Cho Seung-Hui was. To shoot 32 innocent people is *****; why would anyone do or even think of doing something like this? What did those people he shot do to him? My prayers are with the families of Virginia Tech, may God bless.
- haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -7/+41 @chucknorrisjr: "Another great hero like George W. Bush and Martin Luther King."
Can a whole sentence be an oxymoron? - atown44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32My eyes also began to become teary while reading this. It's been a while since I've felt such a positive, yet sad, emotion.
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Congress doesn't mean *****. The best memorial and honor for this brave man will be the fact that his students will never forget him... and that some of them are still alive to remember.
- derkaas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31"No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends."
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26This man did what many of us would claim to do, but what few of us would do when the time came, he put himself directly in the line of danger, knowing what was on the others side of that door, he made himself a human barrier and gave his life to save his student, this man gave the ultimate sacrifice in order to save many young men and women from a life robbed to early, I salute this man, God rest his Soul and may he rest in peace a True Hero.
- liah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28That is true honor. What a phenomenal man he must have been. I wish I could have known him.
- jenel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25He held the ***** door even after he was shot through it. Obviously, you're a dick.
- DeusNova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24People like him make me wonder if there is a higher deity or not, I hope he goes to his heaven. RIP.
- RobN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27I'm with ninephoenixes -- who can begrudge a dup or two? This isn't really a dup anyway -- the earlier article only speculated on his fate, while this one confirms it.
Besides, in a week these dups won't be on anyone's radar any more, but hopefully those kids in his class will always remember the sacrifice he made. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Given the violence that happens everyday, its easy to lose faith in human-kind.
However, then I hear heroic stories like this; it always baffles me how people are capable of such brave actions in seconds as just thinking and hearing about these stories makes me hesitate, yet this man did not. This was much like last year when that soldier in Iraq jumped on a grenade to protect his friends nearby, resulting in his death but the survival of his friends. Or perhaps those two Amish girls whom said to the gunman "Shoot me first" followed by "Shoot me second", giving ample time for their classmates to run away.
There are plenty more stories like this that remind me that despite the Pandora's box of murders, rapes, and other gruesome horrifying acts committed daily, that the heroes are there too, to remind us that there's always hope in the end. As someone whom was rescued myself, I am always shaken by these acts of heroism and can only hope if the time ever comes, I could only be so brave as those before me. - ambrosious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22The man survives the Holocaust, has seen senseless killing on a horrific scale. Even after reaching 75 years of age, someone who should be enjoying his last years in peace does not flinch in the face of the same evil, sacrificing himself for his students. I've never heard a story of one person's life that more poignantly and tragically demonstrates the potential for good and evil in the human heart.
- dandan111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21He is truly a hero and I hope they do something special for his family. He is righteous and deserves to be honored in some way by the VT community and all people horrified y this senseless attack
- JohnC86, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28I wholeheartedly agree with tripacer
- dbhaley, on 10/12/2007, -11/+30If there is a heaven, this guy is getting a one-way ticket.
- selectodude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20May God rest his soul.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21He's a Rumanian.. meaning he's from Romania. It's in Europe near Serbia.
- Goner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16He'd be still alive but with the blood of a bunch of promising young engineering students seared into his retinas for the remainder of his existence.
Instead, he's not. He's dead. Dead and, hopefully, an inspiration to the young people he saved.
Maybe some of them will not eat snickers bars and mindlessly waste time surfing the web, but instead, continue his work in memory of him. - Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17@cybermort stfu now is not the time or place.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Looking at his academic homepage, seeing all the things he has done and the things he planned to do, really put the whole tragedy in perspective for me. No one deserves to killed, but at least his last action was one of heroic altruism.
...It's amazing how one event can cause you to lose faith in humanity and then restore it so completely.
RIP Dr. Librescu - slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I got teary eyed as well, we would all like to think we would do the same in his situation but he actually did it.
He is a Hero. - kapkorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14If there really is a heaven, and anyone deserves to go there it is this man.
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15People like Seung Hui Cho make me wonder if there is a hell or not, I hope he goes to his hell.
- Vipersfate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I completely agree. Hero's are not some dude in action movie..they are the people like this brave man.
- evilesttoast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13http://www.esm.vt.edu/php/person.php?id=10023
The Virginia Tech page about him - hdtroll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14It maybe a related article, but this one is much more specific to the professor. He is a hero!
- Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The man should be nominated for a Congressional Gold Medal.
Though considering the passengers and crew aboard Flight 93 have been on the nominated for going on five years now, Congress moves slow to recognize heroes.
Hopefully the commonwealth of Virginia has its own medal of honor to give to deserving citizens of its state. - stevenley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12He is a Jewish Romanian who moved back to Israel in the 70s. Then he went on sabatical to teach at Virginia Tech.
He is also a Romanian Survivor of the holocaust. I am sure this wasnt the only selfless act he did.
He really is a hero.
Baruch Dayin Emet - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania
he was a Romanian not a Rumanian - RobototoboR, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Leonidas needed 300 Spartans to hold Thermopylae. Liviu could've done it by himself.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11How come you didn't think how strong the 77 year old man was to sacrifice himself? He ensured the safety of others. Oh he could've fled too, thinking about his wife, his children, and so forth.
But no. This man stopped a young 23 year old man armed with at least two pistols with his own body and succeeded. - clacka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Dear Professor, thank you for your life. I did not know you but I will not forget you. There may be a time in everyone's life that you have a split second to decide what is right vs. what is wrong -- or what is right vs. what is more right. No one would have blamed you for running or hiding. But you didn't. You did the thing that was for you the most right thing. Although you probably didn't, I hope that you had time to consider your actions and to choose your course you did, because that way it is more likely that you died knowing that you made a choice - a very valiant, awe inspiring choice. I hope that you found comfort in that in your final seconds. I hope that you did not die scared, but that you died feeling righteous. God bless you, and for what you have done to restore my hope in humanity.
- darkpl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11World would have been better, if people like him would live across the globe. Rest In Peace, I hope you will find there, wherever you are, your final destination, your piece of mind, where you will be happy.
- darkpl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It should be in every man's nature, to look about people, not only yourself.
- haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Yeah, cause you know everything.
Way to turn something heroic into something where you can spew your ignorant racist hatred.
(also, it would be nice if racists could actually *spell* the names of the people they are so ignorant about) - kaiser44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10may I summon the courage you displayed if needed, I hope I could, I am not sure, I hope I am never tested as you were.
May you and you're family find peace. - catfish182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The huge sack this man showed is honorable.
Its sad that he died but he gave up his life to protect others and that can not be put into words that would show how great this man was.
I am in awe of that sacrifice and as its sad to see a person gone i feel better knowing that there was someone like that. -
