I wager this guy deserves all the dupes he gets. - jenel, on 10/12/2007, -8/+50Stories like this make me proud I'm a Romanian (Liviu Librescu was born and raised in Romania, after which he emigrated in Israel and then USA).
God rest his soul in peace. He was a hero. - glxyjones, on 10/12/2007, -65/+11I recently wrote on my blog how there are so few heroes in the world today. There seem to be no Martin Luther Kings or Mahatma Ghandis for the kids of this generation to look up to. People like professor Librescu make me believe man is ultimately good, and that we will always have heroes to inspire us. Reminds me of the men this poem talks about...
The Exception
I believe in the exception
The men who go beyond the status of hero
They are the closest and the farthest from ordinary
Such men prove, through our whimsical deeds of good,
The same ones which help us sleep the sounder sleep,
That the trading of trivial benevolence for piece of mind
Is a disregard for which we are all culpable of
I believe in the exception
The nullifiers of convention and stereotypes
They open our eyes to our beloved ignorance
An ignorance of appalling magnitude
The type of which we hold so tight
For the world’s realities are too much of a burden
Not worthy of being bothered with
I believe in the exception
The one inside of every man
The few who open their eyes to man’s injustice
Create and breathe amends for their blindness,
But the minds who awaken to the genocide of decency
Yet, choose the immune life of preaching false ethics
With shrugged shoulders and empty words of remorse
Continue to be the majority, the authority
Perhaps the day when the exception becomes the rule
The sleep slept of soundness and peace
Will be shared throughout the world - RobN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27I'm with ninephoenixes -- who can begrudge a dup or two? This isn't really a dup anyway -- the earlier article only speculated on his fate, while this one confirms it.
Besides, in a week these dups won't be on anyone's radar any more, but hopefully those kids in his class will always remember the sacrifice he made. - theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10@diggidydoo

May Liviu Librescu Rest In Peace, He is a True Hero. - haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -7/+41 @chucknorrisjr: "Another great hero like George W. Bush and Martin Luther King."
Can a whole sentence be an oxymoron? - AnotherThought, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9on my comment under the disturbing play written by the shooter i did comment about 'most' prof dont give a crap about students. but there are some out there such as Prof. Librescu who is every bit of a respectable and honorable individual who cared about others under ANY situation. he is someone i want to look up to if when i become a giver. Professor Librescu will always be my hero.

- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Given the violence that happens everyday, its easy to lose faith in human-kind.
However, then I hear heroic stories like this; it always baffles me how people are capable of such brave actions in seconds as just thinking and hearing about these stories makes me hesitate, yet this man did not. This was much like last year when that soldier in Iraq jumped on a grenade to protect his friends nearby, resulting in his death but the survival of his friends. Or perhaps those two Amish girls whom said to the gunman "Shoot me first" followed by "Shoot me second", giving ample time for their classmates to run away.
There are plenty more stories like this that remind me that despite the Pandora's box of murders, rapes, and other gruesome horrifying acts committed daily, that the heroes are there too, to remind us that there's always hope in the end. As someone whom was rescued myself, I am always shaken by these acts of heroism and can only hope if the time ever comes, I could only be so brave as those before me. - jackhowitzer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8A real hero.
Rest in peace. - RobototoboR, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Leonidas needed 300 Spartans to hold Thermopylae. Liviu could've done it by himself.

- Vipersfate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I completely agree. Hero's are not some dude in action movie..they are the people like this brave man.
- kmckanna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That is heroism you rarely see in life, and mostly see in movies.. I wish we could see it more in life like that, because when you read the article at the part where he says as he was about to jump out of the window (Calhoun) and turned back to see him at the door,-- I personally felt like I could see it happening and it's just something that you wouldn't usually see.
What a great guy, wow. It's hard to find the right words to actually describe such an act. - Sotired, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Prof. Librescu was probably the only person, who, seeing and surviving the worst of mankind, had no fear to face a coward with a gun. I imagine him thinking ***** YOU YOU LITTLE BASTARD.
I want that to be so. since we can't know, I am saying it.
He was probably too good to think that.

Look, for once and for always. A murderer is NOT the same as his victims. Cho is NOT a victim. He is a killer. He will go to hell and spend eternity in agony.
Let me spell it out again very clearly, ok ?
You had a gun. It has 2 ends. The handle is held by a murderous bastard who will burn in hell for all eternity, and was even too coward to face up to his punishment in this life. He deserves every bit of punishment he will receive. He destroyed lives, and ran. He is a despicable coward.
On the other end there were people who had nothing to do with him. They are victims, and they deserve to be remembered. They were killed by a great evil. I pray for them.
Obviously since we don't know everything that was going on here we're not 100% sure about this. God, however, has no such limitations. We can only do the best we can, and it will be enough, and he will judge, both us and Cho.
And yes this had nothing to with South Koreans. They're just here trying to learn, or searching a better life, or perhaps even on vacation. Cho is PERSONALLY responsible for his actions.
- darkpl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11World would have been better, if people like him would live across the globe. Rest In Peace, I hope you will find there, wherever you are, your final destination, your piece of mind, where you will be happy.

As I understand it he was shot throught the door, CMIIW. He didn't realize that the gunman would do so. Common sense often fails in situations like this. It's like hiding from a gunman behind a car. It's not because he can't see you that he can't hit you. Bullets go through cars, unless they hit the engine.- fogster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Whatever the case, he saved dozens of lives, and surely knew that there was some risk involved in holding the door between his students and a gunman shut. - catfish182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The huge sack this man showed is honorable.

- superlife, on 10/12/2007, -20/+1Stop and think for a second:
In one of the classrooms some students laid on the foor keeping the door shut with their feet. The deranged man couldn't get in and shot a few times through the door, fortunately without hitting anybody. They had little choice - no heroes here.
Mr Librescu was a 76 year old who could not jump out the window like his students did. His only option was too keep Cho from entering, but he was shot through the door. While by all accounts a good man, he acted in self-preservation - no hero either.
I'd like to hear that at least somebody tried to stop Cho, THAT would be a hero.- superlife, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1For all who dugg me down consider this (emphasis are mine):
"The last person to see Professor Liviu Librescu alive appears to have been Alec Calhoun, a student at Virginia Tech who turned as he prepared to leap from a HIGH CLASSROOM WINDOW to see the ELDERLY ACADEMIC holding shut the classroom door. The student jumped, and lived. MINUTES LATER, the professor was shot dead."
This happened on the second story, and Alec Calhoun jumped, HURT HIS BACK, and made his declarations from hospital.
The professor had a few minutes, but chose to try holding the door shut insted of jumping.
No disrespect intended, but he's no hero.
- superlife, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1For all who dugg me down consider this (emphasis are mine):

The professor is a true hero but I ask: where were the strong young men? Why didn't a few of them jump this mad man and stomp him before he killed so many?- Branden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@scotty1024
I can't speak from experience but I would think this is one of those "easier said than done" things. Think about it: In the matter of a few seconds, you could change both the lives of yourself and also the other people around you. You have no idea what the motives are behind the guy firing the gun. Maybe he is just after a few people and by you intervening you will just make things worse, like claiming more lives for instance. While I, like any other decent person, would take a bullet if it would save other people, you have absolutely no idea about how your actions will play out and most people, as mush as they might want to, would probably be too scared to do anything brave in this situation.
