On 9/10, if a jetliner was hijacked, you waited for it to land, and then your special forces friends made sure it didn't take off again. They were successful enough that pilots knew to simply obey the hijackers. Sooner or later they had to land, and then it was all over.
The wake-up call came when the first jetliner hit the tower. Jets WERE scrambled, but by then it was too late. - demicritter, on 04/07/2009, -5/+20 Hijack response has improved drastically since 9/11 when 4 commercial jets were commandeered and no jets were scrambled. Norad was doing drills elsewhere.....
- sKiLLa182, on 04/07/2009, -2/+17Wow, get a room. Besides, ***** both of you, I submitted it about 20mins before you buzzhead.

But yeah, I don't have a network of digg circle jerkers to digg it up for me. - jscnet, on 04/07/2009, -8/+22How many cars cross the border every day? Cars, vans, and trucks, most of which have much larger "storage areas" for things that go boom boom in the night. A Cessna 172 is no more threatening to national security than a Volkswagen Beetle with wings. This is another example of the (business as usual) U.S. over reaction to a yet another, non-issue. What's next? Now in the news: A guy steals a canoe, crosses Lake Superior. The US Navy is alerted and dispatched to pursue. The canoe refused to stop. Due to shallow water the US Navy had to pull back. U.S. authorities found the abandoned canoe sitting on a Wisconsin shore line, no sight of the paddler.
Meanwhile, Anderson Cooper reports on this unbelievable security breach and poses this question (his first question) to the "experts":
"Who has the authority to use lethal force in a situation like this?"
-- Absurdity. - Elliuotatar, on 04/07/2009, -0/+13But what's the minimum speed of an F-16 and a Cessna?
- RogerStrong, on 04/07/2009, -1/+12NORAD was keeping a close eye on things *beyond* the borders - monitoring aircraft headed towards the US over the Atlantic, the Pacific and the arctic.
It *wasn't* tasked with monitoring aircraft taking off from Boston. - DankBuddz, on 04/07/2009, -0/+11African or European?
- kenlaw, on 04/07/2009, -0/+11NO MORE ADS WITH SOUND!
- factsahoy, on 04/07/2009, -4/+14WTF, another ***** AUDIO AD blaring, as I read this at 3 a.m. and others are asleep in the apartment.
GOOD JOB, DIGG.
Morons. - allisonaxe, on 04/07/2009, -1/+10why don't you have adblock?
- Taikun, on 04/07/2009, -2/+11Cars, vans and trucks are not allowed to simply cross the border as they please. Same thing with aircraft. In order to cross the ADIZ (air defense identification zone) between the countries, the pilot must have a flight plan filed which tells the proper authorities in both countries who you are and when you will be crossing. This is very basic border security. Do you really think they should allow random aircraft to cross borders whenever they want without any sort of control?
I'm a Canadian pilot and I have to say that the US was justified in their reaction to this. Regardless of where it comes from or what it is, an unidentified foreign aircraft in controlled airspace is a potential threat and must be treated as such. It was like this well before 9-11. - sneaker98, on 04/07/2009, -0/+7Nah, not unless he's headed for any large buildings or urban areas. But with a plane that size, I doubt he could do too much damage anyways.
- PandaBearShenyu, on 04/07/2009, -1/+8Have you never played ace combat? he was probably waiting for his missiles to reload so he can do a high G turn and show those pesky F-16s who's the real boss. XD
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+7"I'm too close for missiles, i'm switching to guns"
"Okay, Now i'm in Kentucky" - sKiLLa182, on 04/07/2009, -1/+8Apparently this guy just lost both his parents. A lot of people thought it was a suicide attempt.
- mikemehak, on 04/07/2009, -0/+7yeah, what's what that *****?
- mikemehak, on 04/07/2009, -0/+7I was at an air show once and this drunk looking guy ran out and stole a running a plane.
The plane was bouncing off the run way almost crashing and tipping and going out of control. Doing donuts on the ground and in the air. You were sure he was going to crash.
THEN HE STOPS, jumps out of the plane and runs and gets tackled. then he gets up, takes a bow and ZING - it was all part of the show folks, completely staged. - TexasKoz, on 04/07/2009, -0/+7That's some serious gas mileage.
- walkertexas69, on 04/07/2009, -4/+10Takes some serious balls of steal to ignore 2 fighter jets from a little Cessna. Wonder if he thought he could 'lose' them.
- freezerburn666, on 04/07/2009, -0/+6no kidding, i'm ***** tryin to work here dammit.
- Picard102, on 04/07/2009, -0/+6My condolences. (Fort Frances)
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/07/2009, -1/+7Except that this was the sort of thing NORAD was actually designed for (protecting US airspace from unauthorized intrusion) in the first place.
I don't know whether or not NORAD has improved their response to commercial hijackings. I hope so, but this story really has nothing to do with any of that.
It's apples and oranges. NORAD always watched for this sort of thing. On 9/11 they had no idea what was going on until word came down from other sources. - IKORKYI, on 04/07/2009, -0/+5in this day and age, its still the quickest way to get a missile shot at you
- SillyRabbits, on 04/07/2009, -0/+5"The F-16 has a stall speed around 250 Mph."
That sounds way too high. Maybe 250 at max gross weight, full fuel and no flaps. - inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+5This Cessna came from Canada, it went over the border, the 9/11 planes didn't. NORAD scrambled jets because of the border thing, and they would have done the same 8 years ago.
They wouldn't have sent jets if that plane had been stolen and flown within the US, unless it went over a military controlled space. (well, they might now, but they wouldn't have before 9/11) - inactive, on 04/07/2009, -1/+6If I cross the US/Canada border with my van and it's large "storage area" without stopping, I'll get chased.
If I boat across the Great Lake without id'ing myself, believe me, I will get chased to.
So you are telling me that I should be exempt if I was to take a plane? How does this make sense? We'll let plane through because cars can carry more bombs? - BuzzEdition, on 04/07/2009, -9/+14I was the original, and they have already updated on the page I posted, no reason for you to post your update on my page. Especially after I resurrected your buried post the other day.
Original http://digg.com/world_news/F_16s_Chasing_Stolen_Pl ... - avianna, on 04/07/2009, -0/+4See, what I don't get is, well, aside from his entire motive for this, but let's ignore that for a moment... why would you, after being tailed by two F-16s, landing on a highway, getting out of the plane, and "[take] off running"? What part of running away, after going through all that, seems like a reasonable response? I mean, it's not like you are doing one of those drive the stolen car into a hidden lot and turn off the engine and run out the back yard sort of things. You've parked a plane on a highway, they are going to notice these things!
- foopirata, on 04/07/2009, -1/+5Because, as everyone knows, the USAF has only two F-16's in service.
Little thing called "rotation in place" doesn't exist.
/s - allisonaxe, on 04/07/2009, -2/+6No, he should not HAVE been shot down.
- mysdak, on 04/07/2009, -5/+9Hey...I'm from Thunder Bay
- Virgule, on 04/07/2009, -0/+4The Cessna's top speed is pretty much the F-16's landing speed...
- stubear, on 04/07/2009, -1/+5You do realize that the aircraft used in 9/11 were not deemed a threat until they hit their targets right? All the fancy equipment in NORAD meant ***** considering this. They had no foresight knowledge of the events about to unfold. The fourth plane that went down in Pennsylvania was being tracked after the first two planes hit the towers and the third hit the Pentagon. I'm suspicious as to how this plane went down in fact. I know we hear the stories of the "heroic" passengers, but I wonder if it wasn't shot down because of the fate of the first three planes?
- Dustmuffins, on 04/07/2009, -3/+7Shh, you'll ruin the troofers party...
- saigumi, on 04/07/2009, -0/+4Too bad that national news dropped off the hillarious ending to this.
The guy got out of the plane, went into a truckstop and proceeded to order a meal and was sipping a soda when the police arrived. - humanedited, on 04/07/2009, -0/+4My ***** town (Thunder Bay) finally made the news for something other than an NHL player. Too bad it was for this
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+4aircraft stats are in knots, not mph. 250 mph would be way too high anyways, they touch down at around 130kts. Ever been to an airshow and seen a modern fighter do a low speed pass?
Cessna may be able to do as little as 40kts with winds aloft. - diggduggjoe, on 04/07/2009, -1/+5Wake up call my ass! Many of those in intelligence knew of that risk. When Bush and/or Condi said we never expected such an attack, they were lying.
I am not in the truthers' camp, but there was a ton of security failures on 9/11 and some pretty strange coincidences that I do not believe were ever properly explained.
Mostly, I feel, for the truth would be most of our government is run by dumbass douchebags that we should never trust to run our lives. - overridemymind, on 04/07/2009, -1/+5"Did you know that one out of every four Americans believes that 9/11 was a conspiracy? Are you saying that one fourth of Americans are retards?"
"Yes, one fourth of Americans are retards. Let's take a test sample. There's four of us, and YOU'RE a retard. That's one in four"
/southpark - foopirata, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4"If it's just Cessna vs F-16 and no shooting allowed" - the F-16 would open up the blower, do a close pass before the Cessna, which would tumble to the ground awash in jet wake, all in the span of 3 minutes give or take, rendering the discussion completely moot :D
- SushiCW, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3Totally irrelevant, but dugg for a cool story.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4@gsenechal : There are some who complain, there are other who find solutions. Unfortunately the solution here is to download AdBlock
If ad pay for things, then don't show me ads that pushes me to download an ad blocker. - sKiLLa182, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4same here... next time maybe TBay will get some recognition other than some psycho stealing a plane.
- foopirata, on 04/08/2009, -1/+4I thought we were discussing hypotheticals here.
- mnpilot, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4And pretty damn good flight planning....I knew pilots who couldn't figure the fuel use for a 50 mile Xcountry.
- DankBuddz, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3It was actually 2:37 a.m., not 3 a.m.
- JeffLongoria, on 04/07/2009, -2/+5HAHA I wish I could digg you 100x, funniest reply of the month.
- DankBuddz, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3How is it not a measure of force? What's the difference from talking about PSI?
