- hamobu, on 12/02/2008, -10/+109This warning reminds me of horoscope predictions:
"you will have some issues relating to money in the coming days" - Bith8654, on 12/02/2008, -0/+97Are you saying you got a warning about the financial crisis and you never told us?!
- ozymandias2012, on 12/02/2008, -3/+34How long before this story morphs into the entire incident being blamed on the United States?
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -10/+37My question is: how many warnings in history DIDN'T come to pass. Remember Y2K, that was supposed to be the end of the world and then...nothing
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+25So you still prepare for warnings. The govt was prepared for chaos on Y2K and thankfully it did not come to pass
- Bith8654, on 12/02/2008, -0/+23What is this, Gabass Comment: The Director's Cut?
- Tiak, on 12/02/2008, -4/+26Exactly what would've they done to change things based upon that information?...
Also keep in mind how large India is, and how many such threats they're constantly dealing with... This is the 19th terrorist incident on Indian soil this year according to wiki (including one embassy)... You think they aren't trying?...
Honestly, it's kind of ***** up how suddenly things are important when Westerners are targeted... In September there was a set of several bombs that went off roughly at once. 30 died, 90 were injured, barely anybody heard about it (I knew about it because a friend of mine was shopping in the area shortly before it blew up, and she just shrugged it off saying that was just how things are over there). - Ndiggnation, on 12/02/2008, -0/+20That's because those of us in the tech industry worked long and tireless hours leading up to that time to FIX it.
- oldhick, on 12/02/2008, -4/+19What are you talking about? It's safe to come out of the bomb shelter????
- 13OOM, on 12/02/2008, -10/+25They should've listened...
- jugglingjon, on 12/02/2008, -0/+14They also apparently said what city it was going to happen to; doesn't sound that useless to me, if you have a tip on where an attack is going to happen and where it is going to come from. You say this information was useless, but I'm willing to bet India will be acting on this type of intelligence vigorously in the future.
- wonderchemist, on 12/02/2008, -4/+14Yes, but did we remember to light two signal fires?
- billizm, on 12/02/2008, -1/+11I thought it was just assumed.
- Craig304958, on 12/02/2008, -1/+11Actually, warning of an attack by water is much more specific than most horoscope fortune-telling. Specific enough to merit additional security, if it came from a credible source. The credibility to foreign governments of U.S. intelligence sources is another question.
- BigManOnCampus, on 12/02/2008, -7/+16The warning given was useless. "attack by sea" ?? ok, what is the nature of this attack? No details = nearly useless warning.
That said, the fact that our intelligence actually predicted something is somewhat good to hear. It means we're not completely wasting our money on these people.
Either terrorism is a much harder animal to apply spycraft to, or our spycraft is the sux now. - Tiak, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9Hell, after posting this, and throwing out a quick Google, apparently there've been 5 dead and 35 wounded in the past 24 hours alone (not in Mumbai).

The MSM might cover this one because it's in India this soon after an attack they paid attention to, but they certainly wouldn't take notice otherwise... - thepeacemaker, on 12/02/2008, -3/+12It wasn't just that the US warned India twice but the Indian intelligence agency (RAW) itself warned the govt but absolutely nothing was done.
http://www.livemint.com/2008/12/01235633/Why-was-w ...
The problem here is that we're holding the govt there to Western standards. You have to pay a visit to India or surrounding countries to really fathom the ineptitude of those govts and the utter disregard for their citizenry. There is a reason why certain countries are called 'third world countries'. - HelAom, on 12/02/2008, -0/+8well said
- dp1140a, on 12/02/2008, -1/+9I think what is more interesting is that if the US told India there was chatter about a possible attack then the US also knows something about WHO was planning this attack. Odds are this was either some sort of SIGINT (courtesy of the NSA) or HUMINT (Courtesy of the CIA). In either case there is a source for said intel; and the handler of that "asset" knows who they are associated to. Hence there is a good probability that the US knew or now knows who was involved. If it was elements or associates of Al-Qaeda they would be all over it on the media as fuel for the "War on Terror" bonfire they must continually stoke. If however it is linked to Pakistan, then there is good cause for the US to keep its mouth shut to keep Indian and Paki nukes in their respective silos. From what I have seen and heard of the reports this attack was very well planned and executed which tells you the participants probably have military training.
Things that make you go "Hmmmmm?" - hinchb, on 12/02/2008, -2/+10I was going to post a thought out reply but with a name like libsuck I think it's easier to call you unintelligent and leave it at that.
- SteelChicken, on 12/02/2008, -0/+7ill call your internment camps, and raise you a Rape of Nanjing, and a Bataan Death March.
- JasonsLan, on 12/02/2008, -2/+9@MetalHead73
are you sure?
India = 1,129,866,154 people
U.S. = 301,139,947
India is more than 3X bigger than the U.S. (maybe not geographically, but the sizes of their cities and the number of people, is way bigger) - omgwtflawl, on 12/02/2008, -0/+7What is your opinion of George Bush and pre-9/11 intelligence?
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -2/+9I was just thinking that. Somehow, someway, someone will start blaming the US for what happened, just like we're blamed for the Holocaust and every other tragedy in every other country during every time period, dating all the way back to the start of humanity as we know it. Someone's probably even blamed us for Pompeii being buried under ash.
- socialfly, on 12/02/2008, -3/+10This led me to do a quick check on Wikipedia as to exactly who was doing what, and to whom, and why - and, wow, what a complicated scenario! This is a meaty one for the conspiracy theorists for a while to come - !
- angusm, on 12/02/2008, -5/+11An attack by sea on Mumbai is not really such a startling leap, given that the city is built on a fricking peninsula. It would have been much more attention-grabbing if the CIA's Magic 8 Ball had predicted a seaborne assault on Hyderabad.
- publiclurker, on 12/02/2008, -0/+6Pointing out your lack of intelligence is all that needs to be said. Everything else flows from this failure.
- hinchb, on 12/02/2008, -0/+6All of you are forgetting that it's easy to label a threat credible after it's happened. I'm not sure people know the volume of information and threats that the intelligence community gets daily.
- lonelycanuck, on 12/02/2008, -2/+8Someone told the sitting President of an imminent attack weeks before it happened (http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB147/clar ... He decided to take that August as a vacation - after all that hard work he had done. How'd that turn out for us? A hell of a lot worse than someone telling the leaders of a nation of 1 billion people, that an unspecified small contingent would attack the country by boat.
Giving vague information regarding terrorists now hasn't helped either. All they do is move around a color wheel. Today is an orange day, tomorrow a red. It's like that ***** from back in the 80s, when chicks tried to match their clothes to the season.
"I cant wear blue, we're at an orange alert level. Something in a canary yellow if you please" - thebaron2, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5They already are:

Deepak Blames America
What happened in Mumbai, he told the interviewer, was a product of the U.S. war on terrorism, that "our policies, our foreign policies" had alienated the Muslim population, that we had "gone after the wrong people" and inflamed moderates. And "that inflammation then gets organized and appears as this disaster in Bombay."
Granted, this is the same guy who says that "If you have happy thoughts, then you make happy molecules." - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -2/+7Attacked by land, sea, and air....G. I. Jooooooooooooeeeeeeeeee!!!!
- aurorion, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5Remember, this "warning" supposedly came from the same country that said Iraq had WMDs.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -7/+12lol, what about 9/11? Did the US govt got some warnings but decided to ignore also.
- NotAChickenHawk, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5The thing is, there have been several occasions where the Bush admin has gone public with 'credible' threats that later turned out to be rather non-credible to begin with - the so called "Liberty Tower" attack in Los Angeles, and the attack on financial buildings in New York, for example. And yet at no point have they ever warned us about a threat that really seemed to have any credibility behind it at all.
- meghalc, on 12/02/2008, -2/+7Whats the point now? We had warnings about 9-11 too and what happened? Nothin!
- megamod, on 12/02/2008, -4/+9The U.S. doesn't listen to their own warning/tips...why would India?
Remember 9/11 - pathouston22, on 12/02/2008, -1/+6It would be interesting to know how many credible threats the govt has thwarted since 9/11. Everybody rags on Bush, but nobody knows if he's really doing a good job or not when it comes to security.
- Lockean, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5I simply love that someone named 'libsuck' is insulting anyone else's name for any reason whatsoever. Phenomenal.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -5/+10Wow because of the warning the Commandos showed up in 7 hrs imagine if they weren't warned?
- fuzzmeister, on 12/03/2008, -1/+5Since when has India been third world? It's the 12th largest economy by GDP in the world.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4We will NOT give into fear and instead we will go on with our lives while the appropriate law enforcement agencies take whatever steps are appropriate.
- Barackalypse, on 12/02/2008, -2/+6How many total scenarios did US intelligence indicate that didn't occur though, I suspect we're talking a horribly low signal to noise ratio? If you're issuing hundreds of warnings, two things are likely:
1. Eventually one of your predictions might happen
2. You'll have been wrong so often nobody will bother listening. - ngmcs8203, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4As I mentioned above, we got a warning today. I wonder how we (as a nation) will handle it.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081202/ap_on_go_ot/wm ... - ngmcs8203, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5lonelycanuck... and it was announced today that the threat of a terrorist attack of nuclear or chemical means will take place on US soil in the next 5 years. It should be interesting to see how Obama handles that warning. Apparently the terrorist group mentioned has "permission" from religious leaders to kill "up to 10 million" Americans.
- stopthatplease, on 12/02/2008, -8/+12India neeeds to ramp up thier security and learn to connect the dots
- Labyrinth336, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3no its cause you are an idiot
- Dustin00, on 12/02/2008, -5/+8Like the Bush administration back in early 2001?
- Tiak, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3@Craig304958
He used the link in a sentence meaning it ended with a closing parenthesis and a period. You need to delete them to make it work, so:
http://www.gwu.edu/%7Ensarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB147/cl ...
Digg kind of sucks with links like that.
@MetalHead73
They're averaging 3 actual terrorist attacks a month now, you don't think they have quite a bit more threats than actual attacks?... You expect them to react violently to every threat? Because honestly, the only thing they could do to prevent such a "threat by sea" would be to close down all the city's ports... Which would give the terrorists an even greater victory... Especially if they did it upon every single threat. - trollick, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4I also always known what was going to happen after it happens.
