- Number23, on 05/06/2009, -0/+23Sure they did. The didn't attack a US flagged ship.
- Phate8263, on 05/06/2009, -1/+17I don't understand why these merchant ships don't arm themselves. I would think a couple guys with rifles could thwart the majority of these attacks. Hell, maybe start mounting some big guns on these merchant ships.
- Nick535i, on 05/06/2009, -4/+17I don't understand. It's an article from the HuffPo..... But it isn't ripping on Republicans......
Have I entered the twilight zone? - craigm01, on 05/06/2009, -3/+15I have an idea...
Don't sail F(*&^% near Somalia! - sustydev, on 05/06/2009, -7/+19Interesting how these pirates get all the media attention and leave Somalia with a bad reputation. A little research into the history of Somalia reveals all the wrongdoings that has made Somalian people turn so heavily on piracy. Here is an articles giving the other side of Somalia's story.

And here is a very important one regarding this ignorant discrepancy in media coverage:
http://digg.com/world_news/People_over_Piracy_Plea ... - JimmyTheClam, on 05/06/2009, -0/+12International law says that there shouldn't be pirates either.
So much for international law... - dattaway, on 05/06/2009, -0/+11Where international law fails, pirates win. Time to change the law.
- PDAIsAOk, on 05/06/2009, -0/+10Get...better...security....
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -3/+13This blight on the modern world is proudly brought to you by Islam, the religion of peace .
- Ymeg, on 05/06/2009, -0/+10Certainty hope the crew is alright. I also hope that the German government can resolve this problem without paying these people off.
- rderveloy, on 05/06/2009, -2/+11With a yo-ho-ho!
http://ccinsider.comedycentral.com/2009/04/23/sout ... - tommyny04, on 05/06/2009, -0/+9$10,000 for a successful hijacking ...
I'm changing careers and following in Cartman's shoes - LugaZap, on 05/06/2009, -0/+9Waiting for a Pirate rap group to come out, would be a huge success. Not gonna lie, I would buy the album to hear their salty tales of the high seas.
- trejrco, on 05/06/2009, -0/+6Forget international law for a second, the problem is that these huge ships are easy targets.
If the easy target tries to defend itself, it catches a couple RPGs and sinks - and while everyone loses, the crew (drowning, or captured anyway) and shipping company (the ship) lose a LOT more than the pirates (RPGs). Even if it doesn't sink, it is just cheaper to keep paying the damned pirates than to have to fix the ship. Life is not always as simple as you believe it to be.
Having said that, please know that I do agree with you in principal - I am just saying it isn't as easy cut as it looks. - Tenareth, on 05/06/2009, -0/+6International shipping laws would need to change... but hey, why not?
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -1/+7No its not.
- Ymeg, on 05/06/2009, -0/+6How is it a competition? I don't think one being wrong makes the other justified.
- designerutah, on 05/06/2009, -2/+8So... the argument is that big bad corporations from richer governments took the fishing and this then leaves them no options but to hijack ships and hold crews for ransom... the money from which they use to live high while their neighbors still starve? Not sure that explanation helps in the justification department, but if it works for you...
- tommyny04, on 05/06/2009, -6/+12Its against international law for a non-military ship to have arms on board.
i think that's the answer you're looking for - sHockz, on 05/06/2009, -12/+17zero sympathy from me. what am i supposed to be sad about their chosen way of life?
when the somalians are taking over your ship and are raping your wife and daughter before taking them to their prison, im sure your just gonna stand up and say "ohhhh i totally understand, its just your country and your poverty. here take my boat, my stuff, my wife, my daughter, and ill just swim back home"
no, your gonna chop their ***** stupid ass heads off. your going to shoot them in the ***** dick holes and feed them to the sharks. dont kid yourself. - Avaseal, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5..You should totally go do that! I'll even help pay for your plane ticket
- PBRbeer, on 05/06/2009, -2/+7Give these commercial vessels the Right to carry arms for their own protection and the problem is solved. If these countries could agree that a vessel was allowed a certain number of fire arms per crew member as long as they stayed locked aboard ship at port, these pirates would think twice before trying this *****.
- funkedup, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5Marque and reprisal. Let ships have armed guards and let them protect themselves. Problem solved.
- mickstephenson, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5Clearly you haven't heard of the GSG-9
- Talama5ca, on 05/06/2009, -1/+5Somalian Pirates We!
- ChinaLumberjack, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Man.
Let's reinstate privateering. - drprince89, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4sHockz, it's actually been reported that crews are even allowe dot walk freely on the shyip, as was the case with the American's caputured, if that is the case what makes you think they wont be using the ships supplies to feed the crews instead of their own. You just enjoy pulling ***** out of your ass dont you.
- mickstephenson, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4"America is always illegally invading countries, torturing prisoners illegally and treating the general population of their occupied lands badly. Imagine one night the US army breaks into your house and rapes you wife and children, what I am saying here is a highly plausible theoretical situation, which is why the EU should declare war on America now!"
That statement carries all the traits of yours, but no doubt you think its a ridiculous and "retarded" statement and your statement is nothing like that one, because you are unable to see anything out of your red white and blue tinted lenses. - SpectreFire, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Send more ships. Have more navies dispatch vessels.
- stix213, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Didn't he? The Seals weren't already on the destroyer, and reports said that the Seals took care of business only the day after they arrived on scene.
I am no fan of Obama by far, but we have to give credit where credit is due. Obama sent the Seals to the scene with orders to take out the pirates on their own if the captain was at risk. The Seals arrived on scene days later, and within a day of their arrival they pulled off a flawless rescue.
In this case I grudgingly have to give mad props to Obama for a job well done. It physically hurts me to say that, but truly the credit for the successful rescue goes to Obama, the Navy Seals, and the commanders on scene.
If you want to beat up on Obama we can talk about Iran getting nukes soon, out of control government spending, a loosening of our national security policies which are inviting another 9/11, etc... But on the rescue from the pirates, I don't see any wrong on Obama's part. - Kazbaeden, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Maybe they think the pirates are republican?
- Greengoo, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Lightsaber Teriiiiiiible!
- stix213, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4"Interesting how these pirates get all the media attention and leave Somalia with a bad reputation."
So if it weren't for these pirates you think Somalia would have a good reputation? Sorry moron, but I am pretty sure Somalia had a bad reputation before anyone heard about Somali pirates. - mickstephenson, on 05/06/2009, -5/+9Find me 1 time Somali pirates raped their captives wives and daughters. Making ***** up doesn't prove your point, it just proves you're an idiot.
- varun1s, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4"75 miles off coast of Yemen".....wtf!!
I guess HuffPo doesn't tell us how many miles off somalia's coast, probably because the ship was within somalia's coastal boundries.......these ships think that because there's a weak and poor govt that they can do whatever they hell they like and violate a sovereign country's borders - massivemayhem, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4I assume you mean GSG9.
- Greengoo, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4NO. I GIVE YOU ONE CHICKEN ONLY.
- stix213, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4It isn't international law, but the laws of the ports where the ships are coming and going. Many of these ports say no guns onboard.
That said, I say arm the crew. - Buelldozer, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3I would send SG1, but hey, that's just me.
- graemee, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3Bet they, the pirates didn't either.
- protogenxl, on 05/06/2009, -1/+4International Law says merchant ships can't be armed
- stix213, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3OMG I just dugg a HuffPo article?
- hankidic, on 05/06/2009, -2/+5kill the bastards (pirates)
- bluto36, on 05/06/2009, -1/+4nope no sympathy. if you attack and hijack a merchant ship you are a pirate.
there has only been one way to deal with pirates and it has work since the time of the pharaohs. see pirates kill pirates end of story. - craigm01, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3Avast.. here ye be!
http://www.myspace.com/captaindan
http://cdbaby.com/cd/captaindan - stix213, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3AK's are cheap for both the pirates and the shipping companies. Problem is many of the ports the ships use ban weapons onboard, so the ships have to use fire hoses and other less lethal deterrences like those loud sound machines.
I've heard the phrase "don't bring a knife to a gunfight" and always assumed "don't bring a fire hose to a gunfight" or "don't bring an annoying sound machine to a gunfight" was implied. - costumemaker, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3the first time? they have been doing this for quite a while. They only got their asses handed to them once. Other than that, they have been making off like.. well, like pirates.
- DankBuddz, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3Who said anything about justification? Maybe you should read between the lines.
