- mannurse, on 04/28/2008, -17/+310 My daughters boyfriend, Chris Hansen, drowned in Northern Mi Oct of 85. He fits the profile to a T. Leaving a bar, 22yrs old, walking home because he was drunk.....Found later dead in a river. It never made sense, he would have had to wade out into the river before it was over his head. There was no bridge to jump off, no reason for him to be near the water. Who wades into cold ass Northern Michigan water to attempt suicide to drown by laryngeal spasm? But the police still called it an "apparent suicide". He was a computer Keek and I believe that is how this gang operates. Now that this news is breaking, they will be reading these blogs. So if your out there, you smiley gang bastards, we will be hunting you down!!!!!!
- bamafun, on 04/28/2008, -4/+179If you haven't already you should contact the detectives listed in this article - their phone #'s are listed in the documents linked to in the article so they can add his name and info to their possible victims database.
- lhbaker, on 04/28/2008, -16/+163Maybe the killers work at Wal-Mart?
- jontalisman, on 04/28/2008, -0/+101It certainly does sound more than coincidental.
- bamafun, on 04/28/2008, -9/+98Please read and share this disturbing story - Actual case files, maps, etc.... included in this story.
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -9/+96All of the guys killed had high cheek bones and Asian or Northern European type eyes. Seems he/they like their victims young. Almost all victims had light brown or dark hair. The victims liked soccer or field games so the killer/killers could possibly spot the next victim (or they like guys in shorts...seriously). The killer/killers dumps/kills their bodies in a river or near a body of water. Doesn't mention any drugs being used but high levels of alcohol was found in thier system.

- scm21st, on 04/28/2008, -1/+68The smiley face signs at every scene indicate that the killer(s) did not want to remain in obscurity. It's also likely that they can't break the habit at this point.
- ladon86, on 04/28/2008, -5/+63Jesus, will you all stop being dicks?
Sorry to hear that mannurse, you definitely should contact the detectives. - SpencerMc, on 04/28/2008, -2/+57Is there a link to more photo's of the smileys? I'd like to compare the style, what they were written on, etc.
- ironicsans, on 04/28/2008, -11/+59I don't know enough about the cases to say whether these detectives are on the right track or not, but on the surface it seems a bit far fetched to me. Surely a person who investigates a number of unsolved crimes will find evidence that can be made to fit their theory. It might not mean something right away, but eventually you'll be able to fit it in somehow. I think the idea of a serial killer, strangely enough, is comforting to the parents because it means: a) Their kid didn't commit suicide; or b) It wasn't a random accident which would imply that the world is a scary place. The idea that someone planned the killing at least keeps order in the world.
If I were to cross the country deliberately seeking stories of tragic deaths that are similar, I shouldn't be surprised when I find commonalities among them. Like I say, I'm not dismissing the detectives' theory, as I know nothing about these cases. I'm just surprised that I'm not reading more skepticism in the comments. - Schmich, on 04/28/2008, -1/+46Why does the news publish this before it's finished? They said it themselves that the group could go underground if they knew the detectives had a lead on them...
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -3/+42It's ok he is just trying to Roll-back population to an affordable level.
- Kyrgizion, on 04/28/2008, -1/+39Maybe fiction just copied history?
- lensman00, on 04/28/2008, -1/+38I found this email, apparently sent out by Fortney's father. It suggests the apparent M.O. of spiking drinks:
From: Thomas Fortney [@frontiernet.net]

Subject: Cullen
I am still a little numb. We almost lost Cullen early Sunday morning. It all started Saturday night. He and Ryan Larson went off to LaCrosse to hit the bars with Jay Hoffland. Cullen drove and they planned to spend the night with Jay. At 1:30 they were all at John's Bar. And at bar time Cullen was no where to be seen. Ryan and Jay were up until 5:30 trying to find him. Cullen resurfaced at 7:00 AM at the emergency room of Gundersen Lutheran. He remembers being in John's Bar. And the next thing he remembers is being in the water. We are talking the Mississippi River!! He fought his way out of the river and collapsed on the rocks. He probably laid there for several hours. No jacket or shoes, which he probably lost in the river. He awoke to the sounds of cars. He ran towards the noise. Then he saw a sign for Gundersen Lutheran and ran in his socks to the emergency room. They took very good care of Cullen. He volunteered to give a blood and urine sample. He felt he had nothing to hide. So on Sunday I am thinking he had had way too much to drink and I was upset for several reasons. Well, the blood alcohol came back Monday. Cullen was not drunk. His blood alcohol was .04. Yet Cullen can not recall anything from 1:30 AM until waking up in the river. What did someone put in Cullen's drink? The urinalysis has not come back yet. Cullen has scrapes and bruises and he is very sore. I don't think he realizes that he almost died. And I don't think he realizes that someone almost killed him! Cullen and Tom will be meeting with the LaCrosse police this PM. Cullen some how managed to get out of the river. And I think the fact that he was not drunk was a factor. Suddenly I am asking myself "What was the last bar that some of the other young man were in before they drowned in the river?" I am taking Cullen to the doctor today. He may have become infected with some kind of bacteria. At night I just lay in bed and see him laying on the rocks. Wet. I guess we are very lucky that he is alive. And yet I am so angry that there is a person out there who almost killed my son. Do you think they will ever find this person? I do know that John's Bar is under surveillance. Just what that means I am not sure. Maybe they do a drive by every other hour! Hopefully Cullen will feel better tomorrow. I think I am still in shock. How could this have happened? Again, we are very, very LUCKY!!
source: http://www.rivervalleyblogs.com/archives/january20 ... - deathsquadx, on 04/28/2008, -1/+35I was in college in La Crosse when the last victim there was found. Everyone knew there was something bigger going on. It wasn't just drunk kids accidentally falling into the river. But the local police always denied it. So eventually everyone started to think maybe there was a police connection, or they were trying to cover something up. Some kind of sick underground murder club. All I know is that it had a lot of people in that city worried. I had never heard of all the other kids in the surrounding states.
- Berkana, on 04/28/2008, -2/+34You know what? Criminal masterminds always seem to have this ego thing where they give themselves away with ridiculous clues, as if inspired by fiction. Why is that?
- nico623, on 04/28/2008, -2/+33I remember reading about these last year and I must say, its pretty damn obvious something fishy is going on (no pun intended). People don't just get wasted and randomly jump off bridges, at least not at the rates these happened in.

Hmmm. What's the story with the one found "ALIVE" and why wasn't that part of the story? (Or was it hidden somewhere?) - egeo2000, on 04/28/2008, -0/+28This is very similar to a case which has "just wrapped up" in Albany, NY. I know most of the cases have been involved in Wis. and Minn. but it is suspected to be around the country. Young college student, popular, leaves a bar downtown drunk and dissappears to be found 4 months later down the river. Oddly, the river isn't all that close, at least not a walk I would want to make drunk in the cold. Here's a link http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID ...
Pretty scary if this is all connected. - ricky125, on 04/28/2008, -2/+28Smiley Face is an extremely versatile symbol.
- borez, on 04/28/2008, -3/+28Internet chat room serial killing gang?
Find the site, find the killers
Just a theory. - fitqueenb, on 04/28/2008, -9/+31Can only pray they get caught before another victim is taken.
- Okari, on 04/28/2008, -2/+23I think the killers took slashing prices a bit too seriously.
- orangefly, on 04/28/2008, -3/+24it's the river apes....
- halleyscomet, on 04/28/2008, -2/+22He's not that sloppy, AND he only kills other serial killers. His goal is to stay undetected, NOT to taunt the police and flaunt his activities.
- e3boy, on 04/28/2008, -2/+22...or was it Dexter's long lost brother? He was using the smiley face.
- Remmiz, on 04/28/2008, -1/+21Being a Wisconsin college student myself, this makes me a bit worried. Although, looking at most of the drownings, it appears they are mainly in La Crosse. I've been to La Crosse quite a bit and everyone there knows at least one kid a year gets drunk and tries to swim in the Mississipi River. I personally wouldn't call these murders but rather, stupid drunken college students.
- CChandler2423, on 04/28/2008, -0/+19So listen to this....
Down in South East we have been thinking serial killer as well. Two male college students (seperate occasions) were last seen at the bar with their friends. Bodies never recovered, and even featured on Americas most wanted. Veryyyyyy odddd...

Link: http://www.truecrimeweblog.com/2007/11/missing-in- ... - ahoyhoy, on 04/28/2008, -0/+18Watch Zodiac. Pretty damn fine movie and a nice case-study on serial killer habits.
- haikuFU, on 04/28/2008, -4/+22Dexter did it.
- Treshnell, on 04/28/2008, -0/+17I live in La Crosse and the official excuse is that it's accidental, the FBI even made a trip here to look at it. No one's surprised when another one happens, we just wait to hear about who it was this time.
I wonder if any of those smilies were found around here.
Two of the local colleges are just blocks away from 3rd Street, one of the heaviest 'bar areas' in the world. - achoi, on 04/28/2008, -7/+24It's also a figure of speech indicating that fitqueenb wants the killer(s) taken down, stop changing the subject into some silly religious flamewar.
- DarKnight90, on 04/28/2008, -1/+17You're an idiot.
- WilliamDavis, on 04/28/2008, -0/+16What about swimming in cold rivers in the middle of winter in the dark by yourself? Not FUN, regardless of intoxication level. I see where you're coming from in general, but all of these people aren't just jumping into a pool next door on a hot summer night.
- radish, on 04/28/2008, -5/+20The smiley wasn't the only evidence. Did you not read the article? References to other deaths were also left at the scenes, such as the unusual name of the street one victim lived on being left at another victim's site of entry into the river. I'd say the evidence is VERY strong that these are not suicides or accidents. And that's based on what little evidence was given to the public, not on the evidence the detectives have kept secret.
- Merendino, on 04/28/2008, -0/+15Anyone heard of the case of Brian Shaffer from columbus Ohio?
http://missingexploited.com/2006/04/10/brian-shaff ...
That fits the description quite well.. was two years ago he disappeared. - Envark, on 04/28/2008, -4/+19The ARG marketing campaign for the upcoming Watchmen movie got a little out of hand.
- Valkarie70, on 04/28/2008, -0/+14Not very common at all in the winter months, river is kind of froze up for the most part.
- vexingmodstwo, on 04/28/2008, -1/+15Because of their ego. They think they're so smart (and conversely, that investigators are so dumb) that they can tell you who they are and they still can't get caught. There's also an element of the danger of getting caught that they thrive on. I guess it's part of the rush... then again, I'm getting all this from watching Criminal Minds on TV. ;-)
- DrywallThief, on 04/28/2008, -0/+13Those criminals are ***** now. They have the internetz detectives after them.
- nodong, on 04/28/2008, -0/+13Luckily, few people are so inhuman that they don't want their ego inflated by public recognition.
- Claude1971, on 04/28/2008, -0/+13no he's a numb *****
- thewinemisfit, on 04/28/2008, -1/+13I'm sorry it hasn't "Just wrapped up". "Stag" was one of my closest friends over the past few years, and I'm growing sick and tired of all the things the people are saying about him. "Drug deal gone bad", "Suicide", "Accident". None of these are who Josh was. Nothing that happened to him that night made sense. And it still doesn't add up. Albany police declaring 'case closed' minutes (yes minutes) after the preliminary autopsy was completed, and left dozens of unanswered questions just that. And now the fact that world famous pathologist Michael Baden is coming from New York today to do a second autopsy as a courtesy to the family shows that there is more than a reasonable doubt that there was foul play. I can't just listen to all of this mindless banter and garbage being said.
Try walking down a church aisle carrying your best friend in a casket, and having to see all the pain and suffering in his friends and families eyes. I had to do that this weekend. This was no accident. - GooksBirman, on 04/28/2008, -4/+16Chris Haaaaaaaanson
But seriously, sorry to hear about that. I hope they find these killers. - 11oops, on 04/28/2008, -1/+13In most locations, bridges weren't even around. The LaCrosse Wisconsin incidents indicated that the victim waded in, perhaps lost or disoriented -- yeah, right.
- broseas, on 04/28/2008, -0/+12i'm a college aged male who grew up in La Crosse WI, and now goes to school at the University of Eau Claire, and have spent a lot of time at the U of Minnesota. I have been hearing these stories for years, and every time a college male goes missing, it devastates the entire community. All the times that i can remember a college male going missing, they end up finding the body in the river two days later. There is huge debates that always go on when ever this story is brought up, and to tell you the truth i dont know what to think. Sure, it might be easier on the families and friends of the victims if it was a murder just because it would prove that its not just a dumb kid screwing up, but these events truly do scare me, and i know that i am not the only one around that feels that way
- logan074, on 04/28/2008, -2/+14How is the University of Minnesota mediocre? It is one of the top research universities in the country.
