- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -8/+62Their president's term is up.
Their constitution doesn't allow him run again.
Their president says "***** that" and holds a public referendum.
Their constitution doesn't allow itself to be amended by public referendum.
Their supreme court rules against the president.
Their army, via court order, arrests the president.
Obama, Chavez, and Cuba immediately condemn the army and courts. Obama waits over week to say anything about the pro-democracy "revolution" that was stirring in Iran, and then after much pressure, yet rushes to condemn the unconstitutional power grab by a president in Hondouras.
Wtf? - Metsys, on 06/29/2009, -5/+46I read the title as "Storm Trooper President's house..."
Is there something wrong with me? - Easty, on 06/29/2009, -4/+21If Obama had rushed to condemn Iran, Ahmadinejad would have used it as 'proof' that the Green movement was Western-backed sabotage.
- dildobaggins, on 06/29/2009, -4/+19He's an asswipe who's trying to set himself up as dictator for life and got what he deserved.
The court, congress, and them military did what they were supposed to to protect the country and the constitution, they tossed his ass out of power and out of the country.
Screw him, none of our Business. - Nagash, on 06/29/2009, -4/+18You are 100% correct The Current president wants to do what I Call "A Chavez". Become a dictator. To begin with the Congress of Honduras ordered the military to do their job and protect the constitution of honduras. Thats thier job. There is no Coup. Stupid news poeple NEVER get the stories correct. Bunch of Liars@
- deathcapt, on 06/29/2009, -1/+11Fence Fail, those army guys are just sliding under it. Seems like they could have just snipped the chain link. I don't think there was much of a firefight. I think it was less of storming, and more of just walking in, and arresting his constitution breaking ass.
- solid12345, on 06/29/2009, -3/+13This is a glorious day, another crypto-commie gets his ass punked out. These guys should have been left behind in 1991.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 06/29/2009, -4/+13The Honduran constitution says that if the president even proposes an amendment to term limits, he will immediately cease being president. So technically, his term was over.
- macmcraeart, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9oh snap! quick - someone over there twitter something so we can make this an ad for twitter.
- solid12345, on 06/29/2009, -2/+11If were going to abolish term limits, I say we go back to a monarchy because at least a King is trained from birth to be a leader unlike spoiled upper middle-class marxists with baby hands who spend a summer in a French university and suddenly think they are ready to lead the world.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8There isn't a history of the US meddling in Latin America?
- GeorgeStone2, on 06/29/2009, -3/+11Slideshow? I didn't even think about clicking on that
- yaosio, on 06/29/2009, -2/+10You're saying people in the military were trained to be in the military? Well pop my paupe!
- omegatrump, on 06/29/2009, -3/+10Absolutely correct. The Honduran Military was in fact performing their Constitutionally mandated duties. We have in our own oath a statement where we swear to: "defend the Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic". This was no Military coup, they immediately swore in the next in line to fill the vacancy as is prescribed by their constitution. To bad we don"t have people in our own country that take their oath to defend our Constitution seriously.
- solid12345, on 06/29/2009, -2/+9Oh please, we bring soldiers from all nations over to train here in the US all the time.
Funny how you lefties whine so much about US bases overseas as being imperialist yet we are courteous and let Swiss, Saudi, Irish, and other nationalities train here as well. - rschenkel, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7Fellow diggers, as a long time digger, and Honduran, I am pleased with your comments. We are extremely proud of what we accomplished, in ousting a puppet of Chavez. The international community wants to take this victory away from. Please help spreading the word, that we Hondurans have chosen Freedom, Democracy, and not being subject to Chavez's plans and ideologies. Zelaya has betrayed our vote. Yes, he was elected democratically, but so was Hitler and the same Chavez.
I would appreciate your support. We want to tell the world to let us be. - govsucks, on 06/29/2009, -6/+13Exactly,
Lets hope the door hits him in his sorry collectivist ass on the way out. Perhaps he can head down to Venezuela and he and fat red pig can have a collectivist circle jerk. - amolkold, on 06/29/2009, -2/+8No, because I did the same. I would have dugg up if it had.
- s14sh3r, on 06/29/2009, -3/+8Notice you're getting dugg down? That's because your statement is madness. Today's world is no different from the past several thousand years of political history. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
- JT114881, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6I read it the same way as well. Are we dyslexic?
- noahgelman, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6I just got deja vu, I'm sure I heard that comment before
- bobburn1, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5DUH. That's because they've been trained for YEARS by the US, supplied with weapons and gear, and more. State the obvious much?
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6Gordy who?.
- Honduranguy, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7Actually he won with 1/4 of the electorate. About 50 percent didn't vote since both candidate were populist fakes. Of the 50 percent that did vote 44(something like that) voted for Mel, 42 for Pepe and the rest for the other candidates. The fact that Mel later on admitted he cheatted on the elections makes you realize most people don't like him.
- Honduranguy, on 06/29/2009, -5/+10The world is so misinformed about what's happening here. Only about 200 guys are protesting the coup, most of them employees of the illegal state channel. (Illegal because Mel took away the channel from its private owners).
During his government our external debt went up again (it took us so long to bring it down to acceptable levels), he irresponsibly increased minimum wage in over 100% in a single day, leading to thousands of firings. And what he wanted to do was become another Chavez. Our constitution can be changed in its entirety except for 3 articles...one of them restraining him from reelection. We stood silently as he messed up our country, knowing his term would come to an end. We shuddered when he announced he wanted to do the referendum (he has publicly admitted he committed electoral fraud on the previous elections, we cant trust him), we cheered when he was kicked out of here, and no we are upset you are asking us to take him back. What would you do if suddenly Obama decided he wants to be president for 16 years? And commands the army to follow his lead and support his indefinite reelection? Bend down and take it? - socoolisme, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5You never see military coups any more.
- WraTH017, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7The thing about this "illegal coup" is that it was actually a very legal one.
- bobburn1, on 06/29/2009, -2/+6Waspbr, you're dead wrong. The Supreme Court has ruled a referendum on the constitution was illegal. The supreme court ordered his removal from office due to violations of the constitution and conduct contrary to proper behavior.
- omegatrump, on 06/29/2009, -7/+11This was no Military Coup! The Honduran Military was in fact performing it's Constitutional duty to protect their Constitution from an enemy seeking to overthrow it by mob rule, much the way Chavez did in Venezuela. Are we surprised that Oboma comes down on the side of Castro, Chavez, and the rest of the Commie / Socialist governments condemning this act of rare Democracy? This military is to be commended as they did what military are expected to do, defend their Constitution. We need a military in this country that takes their oath seriously.
- Honduranguy, on 06/29/2009, -2/+6The people support the "coup". The few people you see protesting are governemt employees that got payed for sitting at an office doing nothing. This has been the most corrupt government we've had (that's saying a lot) and the people expressed themselves in a huge manifestation in four different cities agaisnt Zelaya last Wednseday.
On the contrary it has been proves that some of the people manifesting for Zelaya do so under threat of being fired. You either go there and protest against your ideals or you are out of a job. Mel is not popular with the people. - GeorgeStone2, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Browny
- bobburn1, on 06/29/2009, -2/+6Waspbr, wrong. It was not a usurpation of power. It was done on authority of the Supreme Court and Congress (you know, checks and balances) to remove the President due to his violations (or attempted violation) of the constitution.
This is not the US, this is not the UK. They do not allow more than one term. It's their nation, their laws. Stop trying to apply your laws to their situation. - yaosio, on 06/29/2009, -3/+7You know, Hitler did not have term limits.
- GreatSunJester, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Sorry, off topic... but I misread your comment and the image that flashed though my mind was a sporty little two door Hummer in camo plaint.
A Military Coupe. - PM08, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5What happened to Obama not meddling in other countries affairs?
- ZenMojo, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Except Chavez isn't a dictator. He failed his referendum.
- monvalley, on 06/29/2009, -13/+16And the rest of the story. Obama/Clinton support the current leftist government that the people want out. This government is aligned with Hugo and Fidel, and the people want democracy. How can our government support this dictator? Wake up people,we are seeing a view of what the current administration sees for America. Obama and Hugo see the world the same way; scary.
- mickstephenson, on 06/29/2009, -3/+6And Britain would be an unstable ***** and a dangerous place to live, instead of a cushy, comfortable, stable and safe place to live.
What annoys me is that your idea of politics is to freak out and cause a ***** and suggest ridiculous stuff like staging a coup, or that Jeremy Clarkson's opinions are of any value at all, and yet your vote has the same value as mine. - omegatrump, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3They are idiots.
- cheekdog, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3i read it that way also. was hoping for a pic of storm troopers in front of the presidential palace.
- jofwooster, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Please do not digg down monvalley unless you actually know what you're talking about. For those of us living in Latin America, or who actually understand the implications of Obama's stance, this is a blow to all the countries in Latin America working towards stability, transparency, democracy, and rule of law. However, if you like living in Venezuela right now...I guess you might be happy.
- uncertainty, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3I just got deja vu, I'm sure I heard that comment before
- bobburn1, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3jlan has a "selective" education in history.
- rschenkel, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4Fellow diggers, as a long time digger, and Honduran, I am pleased with your comments. We are extremely proud of what we accomplished, in ousting a puppet of Chavez. The international community wants to take this victory away from. Please help spreading the word, that we Hondurans have chosen Freedom, Democracy, and not being subject to Chavez's plans and ideologies.
Please help us. - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Oh come on, why am I being dugg down? That was perfect and totally appropriate for this situation! Even the submitters name is "weirdralph".
- jofwooster, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2It's very telling that people who actually understand this situation are unanimous, from what I've seen, that Obama's stance on this issue is bass ackwards!
- waspbr, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2@bobburn, if you cared to inform yourself a little more, you would see that the violation of the constitution has been based on a interpretation of this article.
The examples that I gave were meant to get the point across that extending the mandate is not the same as a power grab as many like to say. I am not applying my laws to the situation.Even then, I am not American nor European, how the hell do u know what my laws are?
Honduras has a history of a decade of military dictatorship, during this period many of the members of the judiciary and legislative branches were kept in power because of their connections to the military. Hence the coup.
learn your history mate - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Nice, giving spammers advice.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3Maybe that's why our forces are always fighting somewhere else...........
- GeorgeStone2, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2I've decided to vote green.
