Overweight goes from 25 to 29.9, and obesity starts above that. She is slightly overweight. She's certainly not standard beauty contest material and she is slightly overweight, but she's not obese.

She would be categorized in the upper ranges of "average". At the most, she would be in the lower ranges of "overweight". "Obese" is a completely separate category, which involves health problems and mobility issues arising from excess weight. This woman exercises and most likely has a healthy diet.

          Unfortunately, most Digg males get their unrealistic standards of beauty from magazines and advertising, so they expect all women to be skinny.

      According to the "chart", I'm obese yet I have a 48" checst and a 36" waist, commute by bicycle to work everyday (40+ miles round trip) and according to my last doctors visit was in perfect health including excellent cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

      More importantly, this women has confidence, which is what really counts out there among the ignorant.

      I wonder if this weren't about a competition that has classically been based solely on physical appearance if you people would find it so acceptable to make such disparaging comments. Her calves are huge, her thighs are bulky, and neither of them have any definition to them. Her ass is wider than her shoulders. Her whole body is way out of proportion to her head. You can see the cottage cheese behind and under her boobs and on her stomach. A folding layer above her chest. A double chin.

        There's a difference between a big girl and a fat girl. I've known big girls who weren't fat. One, actually, the rest were fat.

        If this competition weren't about the body, then of course there would be no comments. She would be clothed. She wouldn't be drawing attention to her fatness, and trying to say that she represents the norm. She doesn't look normal at all. She looks fat, out of shape, and ungainly. I can't tell if she's pretty but cause she has excessive chin and fat cheeks.

        I'm glad I don't live anywhere where she "has quite a leg up ... on most women". I'd move.

No snacking, no sugary sodas. My net calories per day is something like +800. Yet according to the charts I'm obese. It doesn't go up, it doesn't go down.

            And yes, I agree with you that paper-thin isn't healthy either. But you cannot seriously claim that that girl's body fat percentage is in a healthy range. Imagine her cholesterol level. Imagine her blood pressure. Yes, one can eat and exercise regularly and not have a media-perfect image, and of course that can be attributed to things like metabolism or genetic predisposition, but that is simply not the case here. She is overweight and could easily loose a good deal of that weight. End of story.

            Not everyone who is overweight has a high cholesterol level or high blood pressue. You have no idea of her heath status or what her excercise regimine and diet are like.       skinny is unhealthy, and anything inclusive of 'normal' and 'overweight' is healthy, and some studies have even shown that people in the 'overweight' category may even be healthier.
      note that the category names healthy and overweight were influenced by cultural ideals, however look at the Eskimos, they tend to be 'overweight' while being entirely healthy.

And no, it is NOT healthy. I said this the first time- I guarantee she gets winded going up stairs and is probably on her way to serious cardiovascular problems and even more likely diabetes. I'm not being mean, I'm speaking from personal experience.

      And I don't care how personally confident you are- put on a one piece. It just isn't appropriate when there are so many flattering swimsuit options out there.

          However this is giving the opposite image that you can be fat and beautiful (which I dont believe you can since I dont find fat women attractive). But more to the point its almost celebrating fatness, telling other fat girls out there that they dont need to lose weight. Well they do!

          Why is the weight issue always about extremes, models should be in a healthy weight range to set a good example.

The thing is...is that people should be able to be happy with their bodies big or small. You can't always change the way that you look. Some people are just meant to be heavier set. A certain image of beauty is placed on women that men just don't understand. Men can be heavier and its ok. Women who are heavier on the other hand are chastized about what the eat and what they wear. This woman is beatiful.

        If she were 3 pounds lighter, she'd be normal weight with a BMI of 24.8, not even taking into account fat/muscle ratio or any other factor.

    There is a VERY common misconception between being overweight and being healthy. And being skinny doesn't make you healthy either. You can be a size 8-14 and be healthier and live longer than a size 2.
