I agree with BeefBaron. None of you who digg him down can face reality.- revjustin2, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4You clearly don't understand what BeefBaron was asserting. He is questioning the moral authority of people who condemn locking up their daughters for 24 years based on the assertion that half our species has it's roots in rape and incest. You really agree with that?
- relic180, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1His misuse of logic boggles my mind, and I certainly don't agree with misused logic.

- cybe, on 04/29/2008, -15/+7Yes... Now insult is added to the injury when the people of Austria will have to pay for his holiday in prison.
No criminal is afraid of prison. With the death-sentence people would think twice before committing serious crimes.- Tuto, on 04/29/2008, -3/+16No criminal is afraid of prison... are you high? Have you ever been to prison? Locked up in a little sell in a place where your every move is monitored and every decision is made for you. I think the death sentence might be the more human punishment compared to life in prison. In this case life in prison would be the best punishment, let the ***** taste his own medicine.
- Kaitsu, on 04/29/2008, -9/+5Tell then, why don't prisoners end their own lives more often while they're locked up for long times, or even a lifetime?
I think there's something wrong in the justice system if people who end up with long sentences don't end their lives, obviously prison is too simple life then. The system works when every prisoner ends their own lives voluntarily.- revjustin2, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5Please tell me you are joking. Please.
- Tuto, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5This has got to be one of the weirdest comments ever. First of all committing suicide goes against human nature, so its never easy to do. Second people get used to the environment they live in. Even though prison life sucks ass it becomes bearable when you get used to it. You can consider this case as an example: This girl lived in a basement as her fathers sex slave for 24 years and she didn't kill her self. Is this an indication that her live wasn't horrible? Of course not, it just shows that humans like all animals are afraid of dying and will endure almost anything to avoid it.
- tblasko, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Soooo basically you're saying wardens should have a KPI that tracks suicide attempts per inmate to measure their success?
- Terr01, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1If the point was to have the person DIE then it wouldn't be life in prison, it'd be capital punishment and skip the whole psycho-fakeout stuff, moron!
- flashback99, on 04/29/2008, -2/+3*****. Prison is hell, if you care about the outside. you also assume that criminals think logically and rationally and are capable of feeling guilt.
It all stems from us trying to extract a rational meaning from horrendous tragedy. Culling people that dont fit into our boxes is not the answer. - Kaitsu, on 04/29/2008, -2/+2Why do you (flashback99) call it ***** without any rational explanation for your viewpoint? I asked, why do most criminals who get long to lifetime sentences ___voluntarily choose____ to live in "hell" for the rest of their life, which they could easily end whenever they want to? It's a simple question, but anyone who says what you say should try to answer it for themselves.
Especially religious people tend to underestimate the value of existence.- revjustin2, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2I'm sorry, Kaitsu, but your invocation of rationality just isn't working for me. I don't think someone who states "The system works when every prisoner ends their own lives voluntarily" is really working within the realm of reason, logic, and what most people would agree is logical thought. You are trying to make the point that prison life must be just dandy because prison isn't the kind of place where choosing death over internment is preferable. Listen to yourself. You sound like a sociopath.
- relic180, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Can't win arguments with straw-man fallacies. A system in which all (or even a majority) of the inmates commit suicide is not an indication that it has been tuned to the correct level of *****. There are far far far too many factors that would work against a majority rate of suicide. And you would somehow have to support the argument that most people want prisoners to always commit suicide, especially in a world where its becoming easier and easier to be thrown in prison. Especially if the right people want you there.
Further more, people in the general populace would not find it acceptable punishment for committing any felony as cause for mandatory suicide. You realize that some people are only in prison for 2... 3... 10 years. Not everybody is in for life.
- Kaitsu, on 04/29/2008, -9/+5Tell then, why don't prisoners end their own lives more often while they're locked up for long times, or even a lifetime?
- badoli, on 04/29/2008, -1/+8Leave us People of Austria out of this, please! I'm okay with him being locked away for the rest of his life. "Death penalty" isn't very popular over here, you know?
- planetexpress, on 04/29/2008, -0/+8I'm sorry, you think a death sentence would make him think before he did any of this? People this crazy won't be "put off" by a potential death sentence, hell, he got away with it for 25 years!
- relic180, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1he only got away with 24 of those years, technically speaking.
- Gunsdead, on 04/29/2008, -0/+14People / Monsters like this have no concept of consequences. The death penalty or threat of incarceration would not have been a deterrent with this guy. I suspect that he has no remorse over what he has done and a limited if not completely absent grasp of reality. Evil and crazy...those are the scariest people on earth.
- jrizzo, on 04/29/2008, -0/+9I love how you believe that these people THINK before doing any of this...
- Kaitsu, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2And of course the most important feature of the death penalty isn't to just "teach that criminal a lesson", it's also for getting rid of the broken human being so he stops ruining other people's lives, i.e. getting released out of prison some day and going back to criminal deeds or smooching off tax money for the rest of their (luxurious and easy living) days.
- silverstrike, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4Yes, because living in a 6x6 cage is "luxurious" and "easy living".
I'm not even going to mention the constant effort of not getting stabbed by your fellow inmates.
As for your tax money argument, you do realize he'd have to live 35 years behind bars (in the US anyway), to make it "cheaper" to execute him. The expensive, overtime, extra security, and court costs it takes to execute someone, VASTLY outweighs the financial burden of sticking them in a cell and feeding them $2/day in prison food.
- silverstrike, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4Yes, because living in a 6x6 cage is "luxurious" and "easy living".

- apackofmonkeys, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2It's scary. That "thrill-kill" kid at his trial last week looked like your average middle-class young adult. - DesertDude, on 04/29/2008, -15/+6Now prepare for ten thousand replies of the "I'm against the death penalty except for cases like this" type, which often appear at stories like this. That's what happens when they forget for a moment about the lives of the lovely rapists/murderers/torturers and think about the victims for a change. Everyone's an idealist.
- solidcube, on 04/29/2008, -4/+19The death penalty is not shown to act as a deterrent. Life in prison, on the other hand, is. Also, numerous innocent people have been found on death row. I'm sure you care about that.
- bashar129, on 04/29/2008, -10/+3The only argument that the death penalty does not act as a deterrent is that: since there is still crime, the death penalty isn't effective as a deterrent. However, if a crime was deterred, it is impossible to collect statistics on it. Recent studies have shown that 4-18 lives could be saved by each execution and also that another life would be saved for every 2.57 years someone doesn't sit on death row. Just because the death penalty doesn't deter ALL crime does not mean it doesn't deter any crime.
Also, every action humans take come with inherent risks. Over the past 100 years there have been 25 proven cases of wrongful execution in US history. 25. who knows how many lives have been prevented by keeping the death penalty as a possible form of punishment. Thousands of people die in car accidents every year, I'm sure you care about that. Will you try to ban driving? Every human actions comes with risks and rewards. In the case of the death penalty the rewards outweigh the risks.- Spire3660, on 04/29/2008, -2/+9HOw can you justify even one wrognful death done in the name of your justice? Capital punishment is state sponsored murder, nothing more. Thats 25 people WE have MURDERED for something that was not thier fault. I am disturbed that you feel confortable with killing innocent people for nothing more than revenge.
- Hungryhaney, on 04/29/2008, -0/+8"However, if a crime was deterred, it is impossible to collect statistics on it. Recent studies have shown that 4-18 lives could be saved by each execution and also that another life would be saved for every 2.57 years someone doesn't sit on death row."
So, on the one hand statistics can't be collected but on the other hand you cite statistics to prove your point??? WITHIN ONE SENTENCE OF EACH OTHER !!! - solidcube, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Sir, maybe you would like to volunteer to be the 26th. Or, hell, we'll just put you on death row for 10 years without allowing you to get your DNA tested. Then we'll finally let you test the DNA, which will exonerate you, but we will still refuse to release you. Then when we do release you, we'll say "Sorry" and refuse to pay reparations to you. And those are the lucky ones. You were saying what again about some cold statistics?
- DesertDude, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1@solidcube: can you prove life in prison is more of a deterrent? That's one. Two: the death penalty must be made public. Would-be criminals and troubled teens need to see an execution. Society does. It needs to be televised too.
- bashar129, on 04/29/2008, -10/+3The only argument that the death penalty does not act as a deterrent is that: since there is still crime, the death penalty isn't effective as a deterrent. - Tollboi, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1I think there is something to what you are stating, but I think the real harm comes from the fact that people believe crimes and punishments can simply be labeled and sorted. I think each crime needs to be looked at accordingly. For example in this case to say this man is only guilty of a kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment is a miscarriage of justice. He took away 25 years and the innocence of a child and in the process destroyed close to a dozen lives, so yes I do think people are going to have a stronger reaction to something like this.
- solidcube, on 04/29/2008, -4/+19The death penalty is not shown to act as a deterrent. Life in prison, on the other hand, is. Also, numerous innocent people have been found on death row. I'm sure you care about that.

One hypothesis... daughter is cross-eyed, so in ultra-orthodox Austria, hide her from the neighbours. Then she gets broody - what to do? (BIG mistake). Then it gets kinda routine - deceit, construction in cellars, etc etc. The fully-fit children get properly educated upstairs, those (maybe) less-fit stay hidden. And eventually in a crisis the whole charade collapses - for the best of reasons. No kind of defence, but do try some distorted empathy!

- DaDrake, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4I seriously doubt the mother didn't know..... if its comes out she did know and did nothing, she deserves life in prison.
- willskillz, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6I don't get it. They said that Elisabeth and the 3 kids were locked up the entire time, but right in the middle of the clip that guy w/ the shades on is talking about going to school with her?? Either way, this makes me feel sick. Way worse then FLDS.
- loquax, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Naw, FLDS is much worse because it is part of a self-sustaining culture that will go on for generations and continue to abuse children. The kids mentioned here have a good chance of leading somewhat normal lives and not doing this to others. They will still need life-long psychological and social help.

- gryphon50, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5It's hard when you think back to 1984 (which may very well before many diggers' birth-date!) and realize that for that whole time, she has been locked in that cellar.
- unclebuck, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4Very disturbing thought indeed. I entered high school in 1984. I can't even begin to imagine spending all those years underground in a cellar. I'm amazed that woman didn't go so ***** insane as to kill her self and possibly even her own kids and that evil monster of a father.
- BearinG, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1When the door opens though.. wouldn't you try to run out or something? I guess they might have believed it was "better" to stay then trying to escape..
I mean, if i was stuck in a sewer and then once a day you can see OUTSIDE (outside the dungeon in this case).. wouldn't you try to escape? I can understand not the kids understanding.. but she was 19 when she was first locked up..
Anyway i know its not as easy as it looks but man.. 24 years! I couldn't even stay locked in a cellar for a day..
- BearinG, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1When the door opens though.. wouldn't you try to run out or something? I guess they might have believed it was "better" to stay then trying to escape..

- catswhisker, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5i think the death penalty would be altogether far too humane for a beast like this man, to be put to death would be an end for him, however the ordeal will be with the others for the rest of their lives.
If i was the mother of this woman, my knee jerk reaction would be slow and painful, I mean lets put this in context, he abused his own daughter, he fathered and delivered the children himself, he deprived 3 of them of the basic things we all take for granted, his daughter Elisabeth has been in a cellar with no outside contact, no daylight since 1984, think of all the things she and her children are going to have to come to terms with, and get used to just to be able to have some kind of a normal life from hereon in.
I looked at my adored kids this morning and tried to ask myself how a parent could do this to their own child, all I could feel was anger toward this man and taste bile in my throat at his actions.
Just when i think "human nature" can no longer shock me, something like this comes to the fore and we are reminded that for some people there are no depths of depravity than cannot be stooped to.
how the hell could this have happened, it is reported in the media that the man has a previous conviction for a sexual attack, and yet without too much questioning he has been granted adoption for 3 of the children, did anyone not ask questions then?
And another thing that puzzles me, why only 3 children were removed by him from the cellar?
i really hope and pray (me not being an overly religious person, its a big deal to say that!) that Elisabeth and her children manage to have some kind of a life after this, that they can have some sort of resolution to this and i hope the eldest daughter of Elisabeth is well soon, but i have to add that i think a happy ever after scenario after abuse the scale of this magnitude is not too likely, there are so many difficult hurdles to be overcome, one question is of course has the eldest daughter a genetic disorder, and if so what are the implications to the other children?- username484767, on 04/29/2008, -5/+0shad up

- captric, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1I can understand why you are a frustrated people certainly. That actually is part of the problem, another factor is your lack of punishment where violent people are allowed to walk the streets when they should be in prison.
- banderwocky, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Kinda like the same problem in various states in the US eh?

- hasslinthehoff, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4The only punishment that could possibly come close is that he's forced to spend the rest of his days in that dungeon by himself and it becomes his tomb when he dies and is sealed forever. Raze the house and make it a small park dedicated to that poor woman and her children. I think a case like this calls for something this drastic.
- unclebuck, on 04/29/2008, -2/+4I can't help but wonder with the daughters in the cellar now being 18 and 19 years old, how much longer would it have been before "grandpa" started ***** his grandkids and the cycle started to repeat with a new generation. This whole story is so ***** up beyond belief it just makes me want to puke. Damn, what if that old bastard had died before his secret was discovered? I guess everyone locked in the cellar would have just starved to death and their bones discovered many years later.

How did the wife not know?
What was the girl's condition when she was found? Could she talk?
What were the 3 children's condition who were with the girl?
How did he get caught?
Why didn't she try to escape when he brought her food or whatever else?
How big exactly was this cellar?
Why didn't the wife notice the door to this area?
Was the girl reported as missing 24 years ago? If so, was he questioned about it as a suspect?- keozen, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1From watching the BBC News last night:
1) The dungeon itself was apparently built in around 1983 when he and his wife ran a Bed & Breakfast, she lived at the B&B during the season with him staying at home so she had no clue it was being set up. As for during it was going on i have no clue.
2) Described on the news last night as "pale and weak". She can talk. Apparently some of the kids have some trouble speaking tho.
3) One is in intensive care, the other two are as well as can be expected in the circumstances (as in alive but prob ***** up in the head with all this).
4) One of the three children in the cellar had been ill and slipped into a coma, for the first time in his life he did the right thing and opened the door and took the child to a hospital, it all unwound from there.
5) No idea, presumably she did at first, but that was over 20 years ago, I suppose you'd stop trying after so long)
6) A series of small rooms (and by small i mean small, see the video)
7) It was carefully hidden in a wall panel in an un-used room, apparently it required a code to open & it was sound proofed
8) Not sure, it's not been mentioned.
