- RumpleForeskin3, on 03/09/2009, -37/+329No mention of the time he loaded a camera crew in a boat and tried to film himself rescuing people in Hurricane Katrina and ended up sinking his boat in the process?
- ChefGroovy, on 03/09/2009, -122/+335Why don't these actors just STFU and act. Must be something in the imported bottled water in those dressing rooms, makes them smarmy
- selmer, on 03/09/2009, -10/+214When it comes to politics, 100% of actors should be able to say and do whatever they want...and 100% of normal people should have the right to completely ignore them.
- edstate, on 03/09/2009, -35/+237I encourage all the people who think Chavez is cool to actually TALK to someone who's from Venezuela.
I know, I know, crazy idea. Almost as crazy as getting your facts from Sean Penn. - stefano2000, on 03/09/2009, -46/+204I would like to see Sean Penn live in any regular Venezuelan's shoes before he touts Chavez as a great leader. He would change his mind pretty quick.
- LeftieLucy, on 03/09/2009, -55/+168Yeah, 'cause freedom of speech is only for people who agree with me!
/s - deema1, on 03/09/2009, -129/+241BWAH-HA-HA-HA! Penn, Del Toro, Stone, Glover, and Belefonte, you uneducated, radical, shill, puppets. You have the freedom to be as stupid as you like, but not from being called out on your mental ineptitude.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -79/+188communism and communists suck
- zephyear, on 03/09/2009, -51/+137how did this get on the front page with 36 diggs
- SuperVepr308, on 03/09/2009, -84/+154Good actor, stupid person.
- Zong, on 03/09/2009, -50/+120American Actors are still American and have a right to voice their opinion weather you agree with it or not, or if it's stupid or not, they aren't gonna shut up because you want them too, and they shouldn't have too.
- Goochman, on 03/09/2009, -50/+116Add Rosie and Robbins to the list please
- jakatak, on 03/09/2009, -4/+69Because anything good like Digg, gets gamed. The more people try to game Digg, the more this site starts to deteriorate as a reputable source of what's going on in the world.
I am finding that I don't look at Digg as much as I used to. That's too bad. I was addicted to this site. They should have not spend so much time developing stupid "shout outs" and should have worked on the content management. - jiggawatt, on 03/09/2009, -56/+118I've always been disgusted with Penn's rubbing elbows with Chavez. Yeah, I thought Bush sucked from day 1, and perfectly predicted every bonehead move he'd make, but the enemy of my enemy isn't always my friend. And Chavez is clearly a dictator, proven recently by passing a law that allows him to remain president for as many terms as he likes, war against free journalism in his country, takeover of a US rice company, and countless other undemocratic moves. Chavez is the new Castro. C'mon Penn, and take some advice from some of your peers and shut the hell up.
- jake1337, on 03/09/2009, -13/+67I honestly don't care what any celebrity says.
- mzx639, on 03/09/2009, -47/+96When it comes to politics, 99% of actors need to shut their mouths.
- whorunbartertwn, on 03/09/2009, -9/+56Agreed, he has that right.
I have the right to believe he's an ignorant blowhard as a result. - verto351, on 03/09/2009, -2/+45I think that the shallowness of the attempt was Rumple's point..
- silviumc, on 03/09/2009, -9/+47I, for one, would say I do. I live in an ex communist country and I deal with communism-induced stupidity 20 years after communists were "officially" removed.
Communism and communists suck sweaty slimy donkey balls.
They are scum. My biggest regret is that much too few were shot at the revolution. Not even remotely enough. - diggapleeeze, on 03/09/2009, -15/+53Yeah, I find it quite ironic that people here tell other people who support Chavez they should not be allowed to voice their opinions.
- Shawn4168, on 03/09/2009, -61/+97Best Digg article title ever.
- Zong, on 03/09/2009, -22/+57Their are alot of actors who just lost a but load of credibility. I'm from South America, and Chavez is no hero, he has supported Terrorists in Colombia, and gone out of his way to make him self dictator by removing term limits, and is about a big a loud mouth as Rush Limbaugh. I they don't like Bush or what has happened here to extreme right, but don't go running to the extreme left looking for a solution that looks oddly like the extreme right. Damit why he have to go ad do something soo stupid.
- pintomp3, on 03/09/2009, -21/+55I think he means the same Reagan who supported apartheid in South Africa and segregation in America. Maybe he means the same Reagan who escalated the war on drugs and blamed AIDS on the gays. Perhaps he meant the same Reagan who increased the national debt more than any previous president. He might be referring to the Reagan who sold weapons to terrorists in order to fund death squads in Central America, and then lied about it.
- carlosrodriguez, on 03/09/2009, -14/+47Penn is a hypocrite who ignores the civil rights of thousands of Venezuelans who have been prosecuted, jailed, killed, etc by the Chavez Regime, yet he goes and plays a character in a movie about Civil rights and gets and Oscar for it. I believe he is a great actor and he did a great performance but if he believes in his work, he should really take a second look at the situation in Venezuela.
The funny thing is this actors praise Chavez but I have yet to see one of them moving and living a regular life as a Venezuelan. - inactive, on 03/09/2009, -12/+44Nobody is saying to take their freedom of speech away,. Saying you wish someone would know when to shut the ***** up, is just as much free speech as whatever the person whom you'd like to shut up said.
That is the second time I have seen you wrongfully imply that someone speaking unfavorable of your leftist views was attacking your freedom of speech. For that, I really wish you would shut the...... - avianeddy, on 03/09/2009, -7/+37YEAH.... where do you think you are... a free country????!!!
/s - Itaintrite, on 03/09/2009, -3/+33Learn to read before you attempt to be a smart-ass.
- govsucks, on 03/09/2009, -28/+57Collectivism, cause there is no better way to make friends than getting together in a group and imposing your will on others.
The way of "peace" - EcadSGO, on 03/09/2009, -14/+42I have a couple of friends who are from and currently live in Venezuela. They do not share Mr. Penn's assessment of Mr. Chavez. They know that he is generally hated and feared. They feel that he is a monster and fear greatly for their homeland and their children. I feel Mr. Penn's "political views" are more about getting him press for his acting career and less about some true believer political views he has. If not then I fear Mr. Penn may well be as much of a monster as those he aggrandizes.
- krahzee, on 03/09/2009, -1/+28norman619:
Having an education and being educated about a specific topic are to different things.
I'm a college grad, but I couldn't tell you have to fix a car.
That having been said, I have friends with only high school degrees who not only are capable of rebuilding an engine but understand all of the science and know all of the tolerances needed to make it preform to it's maximum efficiency.
That's the issue with a good number of these retarded celebrities. They speak about topics they truly fail to understand as if they are experts on the issue. For every one who really researches the cause they are backing you get the ***** that spout off at the mouth without thinking. In this case a good number of them hopped on Hugo's bandwagon because he and Bush didn't get along and the hated Bush too. So if Bush hated him he must be a good guy, right? - Silentdrowning, on 03/09/2009, -6/+33No way! Documenting narcissism. There's a business opportunity in every tragedy. We all know this.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -8/+35I knew 2 people from Venezuela--they both have family there and absolutely hate Chavez.
- Chairboy, on 03/09/2009, -9/+35When someone gets modded down (this post was at -1 when I responded) for suggesting "Talk to someone who's from Venezuela" to fans of Chavez, the moral bankruptcy of the Chavez supporters is clearly visible.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -9/+33I think Chavez is an ***** and that those who support him are thinking with their head up their ass. However, I've never believed that anyones opinions should be silenced, nor do most Conservatives. I am sure there are exceptions though...
- damnmonkey, on 03/09/2009, -18/+40Not sure why you're being dug down....you do speak the truth.
- waferdog, on 03/09/2009, -10/+32The difference is that Reagan and Arnold backed up their convictions by doing something i.e. they became elected officials. Robbins and Penn just spout (which is their right) knowing they can go and hide if they take it a little too far.
- arizonabay, on 03/09/2009, -3/+25You're absolutely right. He is an American and he can say whatever he wants.
Similarly Mel Gibson and Michael Richards are Americans. When they exercised their 1st amendment rights and said some terribly wrong things, other Americans exercised their 1st amendment rights to condemn them. They became pariahs in an industry which is essentially a monetized popularity contest.
So when Sean Penn and other liberal actors (rightly, in my mind) decried the authoritarianism and bellicose ways of the Bush administration, yet then lend themselves as a propaganda tool for a leader whose authoritarianism would make Dick Cheney blush -- well, it really gives me pause and wonder if I should support their fame-endowed publicity megaphone with my money for their films, DVDs, etc. - ModeSeven, on 03/09/2009, -3/+24Because the Digg algorithm is a myth, Rose has got a bunch of monkeys in a bunker somewhere hand picking all the front page stories. It's true I tells ya.
- nem0, on 03/09/2009, -6/+27Actors are no different than everybody else. They have just as much right to their opinions as the rest of us. It's the media that thinks uninformed opinions are worth reporting on.
- norman619, on 03/09/2009, -13/+34I think I know why you are getting dugg down.
Sean Penn: High School is the extent of his education then he went into acting
Danny Glover: A graduate of San Francisco State College
Belefonte: While he only has high school education he DID serve his country during WWII by joining the Navy right after high school.
The only one who's really uneducated in your list is Sean Penn.
Glover comes from a family of activists which is why he does what he does now not to mention he is a product of the 60's.
Belefonte has earned the right to be as critical as he likes of the country he risked his life to defend in WWII. He did what most of these vocal actors haven't done and most likely would never do. I don't agree with his politics but I do respect the man for his service to our country. - Boxla, on 03/09/2009, -14/+34It is not undemocratic to nationalize a firm or an industry it goes against free market capitalism though, say what you may think. There is no problem with one person being in power for a lengthy period of time, look at Canada, Jean Chretien was Prime Minister for just over a decade and we still exported oil to the US... On another note I am surprised that a generally liberal population on Digg would not read into the troubles in Venezeula or see how much the workers were being paid by cargill compared to what they are paid now.... I'm going to get buried for this...
- caborobo, on 03/09/2009, -6/+26Looks like he went full retard.
- norman619, on 03/09/2009, -6/+25And WE have the same right to call ***** when they open their ignorant mouths.
- pilgrim3970, on 03/09/2009, -1/+20True enough, American actors are still Americans and are entitled to their opinion. But what irks me is when they get closed door meetings with folks in the highest levels of government in spite of the fact that they are no more qualified than Joe the plumber in regards to policy on the economy, foreign policy, etc.
I guess some are more equal than others.... - CoD4, on 03/09/2009, -27/+46I like the part where he preached about equal rights for everyone at the oscars and then supported a dictator
- jbmcb, on 03/09/2009, -2/+21I go by what my friend says about communism, as he lived in Romania for a decade of his life. He said life was fine, unless you had to deal with the government in any way, in which case it sucked. Really, really badly. And you had to deal with the government to do nearly anything.
- Samiyam, on 03/09/2009, -8/+26Actors aren't just regular people working a high-visibility job that makes people feel like they know the actors and should therefore listen to what the actors say. Oh, wait, yes they are.
- thinman1189, on 03/09/2009, -0/+18Link?
- jasonjcrawford, on 03/09/2009, -4/+22We tell celebrities to shut up when they start soapboxing their politics but make celebrities out of the political pundits we agree or disagree with.
Sean Penn giving misguided political opinion probably isn't any different that most of the punditry on network news or on mainstream political blogs. - tavallai, on 03/09/2009, -13/+30Said costar, Cuban-born Maria Conchita Alonso, left Venezuela in the early 80's. This was well before Chavez became president in '98. In fact, the country's petrodollar economy, in Alonso's time, was devastated by the 70's/80's collapse of oil prices.
