/You don't walk around calling black people "*****" in their face, don't you?- grakker, on 12/09/2007, -6/+6If I'm black I do.
- alexforcefive, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3In Canada and Greenland the term Eskimo has fallen out of favor, is considered pejorative, and has been generally replaced by the term Inuit. However, while Inuit does correctly describe all of the Eskimo peoples in Canada and Greenland, that is not true in Alaska and Siberia. In Alaska the term Eskimo is commonly used, because it includes both Yupik and Inupiat, while Inuit is not accepted as a collective term or even specifically used for Inupiat (which technically is Inuit). To date, no universally acceptable replacement term for Eskimo, inclusive of all Inuit and Yupik people, has achieved acceptance across the geographical area inhabited by the Inuit and Yupik peoples.
The primary reason Eskimo is considered derogatory is the false but widely held belief that it means "eaters of raw meat", which has an appealing and depreciating ring to it. There are two somewhat different etymologies in available scientific literature for the term Eskimo. The most well known comes from Ives Goddard at the Smithsonian Institution , who says it means "Snowshoe netters"[3][4] Quebec linquist Jose Mailhot, who speaks Innu-Montagnais (which Mailhot and Goddard agree is the language from which the word originated), published a definitive study in 1978 stating that it means "people who speak a different language".[5][6]
So sayeth wikipedia, so it is.
- speedo, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Eskimo is not an Inuit word, but a First Native word. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge with those not in the know. Some Inuit use the word eskimo when describing Inuit still living through old ways, but please do not use it :D

How is it they're still around if there's this proof that they endorse such behavior? May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed."

Ron Hubbard added what he called and I quote "the religion angle" specifically to hide behind the very, very powerful protections we give religions. Before that it was just self help pop-psych stuff. As a bonus, he was able to go tax free! One day, he gave all his instructors collars, he came up with an eight pointed cross symbol, and so on. And boy did this help! It's the most successful scam of all time and still going strong well after his death. Cops and governments give anything called a religion wide, wide latitude. The man was smart fer sure.

Prior to this changeover from Dianetics to Scientology, they also got in trouble with the authorities over practicing medicine without a license, something "faith healing" religious groups can do with little to no oversight.

- trogdoor, on 12/09/2007, -9/+24No, it really isn't.
I know there is a lot of hatred of religion on Digg, and I am an Atheist myself, but you really can't compare the institutions like the Lutheran Church with Scientology. Yes, certain Evangelical "Mega Churches" may fit within the definition of a cult but even with them you aren't likely to be blackmailed for speaking out against them.
Get some perspective on things, all religions may be delusional, they may even all have been *started* as a way to control the masses ( though that is still a stretch ), but not all religions are cults. And I didn't even need to mention Buddhism...- jacquesm, on 12/09/2007, -6/+13atheists don't hate religion, they pity people that practice it. Imagine a lot of the people in your environment walking around blindfolded, telling you that if you wish to see that you should put on a blindfold too...
- whatever01, on 12/09/2007, -3/+5Funny how both sides use the same description of the world.
- jacquesm, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3scientists don't turn to priests when they have a disease but to other scientists, I say priests should turn to priests instead of to scientists when they're ill. that would solve the problem in a generation or so.
- cfuse, on 12/09/2007, -1/+8Not everyone sees it that way.
I'm an atheist, but I don't feel any pity for those with religious beliefs. Most of the time I simply don't think about them, some of the time I detest them (like when a guy shoved a sign saying "Believe in Jesus or you will burn in hell" in my face) and some of the time I envy them - some of them seem quite happy because of their beliefs. Atheism isn't an easy road for everyone, but some of us cannot ignore what we see as the truth of the matter. That doesn't automatically mean that we are happy about it - I certainly know that my atheism hasn't always been a source of joy for me. Certainly a source of liberation. - ElAssoWipo, on 12/09/2007, -4/+3I hate religion. I'm the natural evolution of atheism. Anti-theism. I have absolutely no respect for religious opinions or religious people and I think they shouldn't be allowed to participate in anything public such as politics or education.
I see religion like cigarettes, not in public please. Do it in your house and stfu about it.
Religion has been holding the entire human species back for long enough. We need to move on.- marm0lade, on 12/09/2007, -3/+4So religious people shouldn't be allowed to participate in anything public? Should we also bring back the Third Reich?
- ElAssoWipo, on 12/09/2007, -2/+1You want religious people to participate in politics? Should we also go back to the middle ages and have our presidents blessed by popes?
- whatever01, on 12/09/2007, -3/+5Funny how both sides use the same description of the world.
- cambob76, on 12/09/2007, -2/+1Buddhism is not a religion. If you think it is, you don't really know much about it. Also, Buddha is not a God like that stupid snorg T wants to let you believe.
- chaosium, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5"Buddhism is not a religion. If you think it is, you don't really know much about it."
If you think Buddhism lacks folk religion aspects, you don't really know much about how it is traditionally practiced. Perhaps you are thinking of some Westernized philosophy that is packaged for easy consumption.
- chaosium, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5"Buddhism is not a religion. If you think it is, you don't really know much about it."
- sdubois92, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1If buddhism only had a few dozens followers who believed they could reach "enlightenment" and people are reincarnated, it would be a cult.
- jacquesm, on 12/09/2007, -6/+13atheists don't hate religion, they pity people that practice it. Imagine a lot of the people in your environment walking around blindfolded, telling you that if you wish to see that you should put on a blindfold too...
- Urusai, on 12/09/2007, -3/+28People need to quit calling Scientology a cult and call it a scam disguised as a religion. A cult is a pejorative term for a religion, which Scientology is most definitely not.
- thebellmaster1x, on 12/09/2007, -9/+15Oh, for anybody who thinks that this is just some anti-religion quote, if I recall correctly, that's the ACTUAL sociological separation between a religion and a cult--how mainstream it is.

That just made my day. Thanks Scientology!
Guess this list is "Fair Game" - Iconoclast25, on 12/09/2007, -1/+14What would one expect from a "religion" created by a third rate science fiction writer? Toss in a belief of "convert, submit or die" and it would be even nuttier than islam. As it is, the two are playing for the international title at the Fruitcake Bowl.
- TheMidnight, on 12/09/2007, -1/+10I thought Matt Stone, Trey Parker and Southpark would be on this list.
- databoy, on 12/09/2007, -2/+3Maybe the reason there is a COS block on a number of net sites is that COS members who still have half a brain may realise that all the teachings Scientology is derived from can be found on the net at no cost. Scientology is a business. In Australia we have legal protection for consumers. The problem with any cult is understanding that you have been psychologically influenced by a cult and finding the support group resources.
You can take a donkey to water but you cannot make that donkey drink it. A person over 21 is deemed an adult quite capable of cleaning the mess from their own ass. Governments can legislate to protect people, but there are always fringe groups who employ unscrupulous silks to find loopholes in the law.
Scientology operates within the legal loophole. The only way to stop Scientology is to understand the lingo they use and translate it back to the public domain knowledge it is derived from. After spending your million dollar plus to go clear; you are only at the neophyte grade of spiritual development. Elron did not learn any of the upper grades of mental development, that is why there is conflict within Scientology.- Urusai, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6Yes, I can agree that legally you cannot legislate stupid people out of the holes they will inevitably dig themselves into. However, the "Church" of Scientology is tax exempt as a religion in the US, when it is clearly a for-profit enterprise.

- TrevorBelmont, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4Here's a picture I made. The Co$ says that Scientology means "The Study of Truth". Does that seem like what they are doing?

- fonik, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2It's completely client-side. It seems to patch some .dll files that were commonly used back in the dark ages when this was recent news.
- lepton, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3To increase cult site page ranks on the Net (they have TONS of domains all interlinked) they offered every single cult member a free "I love Scientology" web page which had links to the mothership, favorite cult quotes and so on, and it included this free net nanny! Ain't that nice? Oh, they forgot to say the nanny is auto installed. Ain't that nice? They also made pages for everybody who didn't participate too. Ain't that nice? But most with computers did participate - if you don't do what the cult says your life, and all your infinite future lives will be black, blacker than the blackest black, blah blah. -Mike (on the censor list)
- cesclaveria, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4it is a software installed on most member“s computers.
- Ghiren, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2@giveer
From the way this program was run, it looks like it's either a filter installed on the client machine or on a proxy machine that the client passes it's information through to get to the net. The idea that the filter is on a proxy connection would explain why one of the sites blocked is about PGP encryption since that would defeat a plaintext scanner. I wouldn't be surprised if an updated list included a block for sites about TOR.- death2newbs, on 12/09/2007, -1/+0What the hell does "program" mean?
- death2newbs, on 12/09/2007, -1/+0Guess you idiots didn't get the joke
- emazee, on 12/09/2007, -4/+1"In 1998, the Church of Scientology started to issue its members with a compact disk, on which was installed a number of pieces of software, including Netscape Navigator. "
So people are freaking out over a project and software with a filter list from 1998?
1998?
how paranoid is that.......
jeez, get a life- Sil369, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2Do they still issue "compact disks"?
- thetechkid, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Well it is how AOL got so big after all....
- chaosium, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3***** off, Clam.
- Sil369, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2Do they still issue "compact disks"?
- DeeBlackthorne, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5dugg because of the awesome links on the Clambake site -- check out the "Scandal of Scientology" story, first link on the page
- RedPhalanx, on 12/09/2007, -7/+3Among the words censored: ronbots
- DestroyFascism, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3After watching Tom Cruz loose his ability to think and reason...Scientology must be excellent at what they do, Brainwashing like most frikken religions...
- JoeVet, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4Did he ever have that ability???? Besides, scientology treats celebrities differently. They pamper them unlike their average victim. That way they can attract celebs so recruiting more victims is made easier. They keep people like Beck and Travolta blind to their actual practices. They have luxurious resorts set up for these celebrities. And since your average celebrity has the IQ of a fruit fly they are easily fooled.
- fonik, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3Oh this is great. They have the uninstallation instructions for windows 95. I can just see the Digg headlines for tomorrow. "Bush steals election from Al Gore!", "Apple rumored to be making a Unix OS", "Reagan calls for the downfall of the Berlin wall", etc.
- baldgye, on 12/09/2007, -3/+0Am I the only one who feels that the more media attention a pyramid scheme gets the more people get conned?
- ConanTL, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2I like how freezone.org and .de are censored. Freezone is an organisation that bases it's teachings on Hubbard's writings but do not belong to the CoS.
- pitdog, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Sea Org and their lawyers are preparing to assimilate Digg now.
This cult is not only evil, it's plain silly. - jjjjjjb, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3They are censoring www.iinet.net.au: iinet is the 3rd biggest ISP in Australia.
Maybe the Scientologists didn't pay their ISP fees or something.- MozillaFirefox, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1They don't cause they have to give up all their money;they steal wifi or something.(Which is really bad if you're in Britain)
