- chase001, on 10/10/2007, -129/+287And Christians don't use tragedy to recruit? What about all the starving children in Africa they have dangled food in front of and then given it them if they convert? All organized religions are sick, twisted and dangerous.
- zKman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+134***** scientology.
- arsheroica, on 10/10/2007, -23/+144Can you cite any examples where Christian missionaries have refused to give African children food if they didn't convert? They're obviously going with hopes of converting people to Christianity, but to suggest that they actively starve those who don't personally jump onboard is completely disingenuous.
- SmackMyMac, on 10/10/2007, -8/+98It's a giant cover up!
They are down there to hide the fact that the bridge collapsed because Tom Cruise jumped up and down on it too many times.
I LOVE MINNEAPOLIS!!! I LOVE MINNEAPOLIS!!!!! I LOVE ...*PLOP* - Leach, on 10/10/2007, -5/+85Scientology isn't a religion, its just a scam. Stop Validating them by calling them one.
- SgtAl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+72The yellow shirted vultures from the cult of scientology descend on yet another tragedy to recruit poor people in shock and administer their worthless sake oil therapy.
- prisoner24601, on 10/10/2007, -10/+62That's obviously a popular sentiment given the disproportionate number of Atheists on digg, but it has as much logical basis for it as saying all US Army soldiers use war to commit rape just because Pfc. Jesse Spielman was convicted of it today. Sure there are Christians who have radically misused the Bible, but you are painting with a laughably wide brush there my friend.
- nils, on 10/10/2007, -2/+46Not that I disagree on your final point, but I would like to point out that Scientology hardly qualifies as a religion. It's a known hoax and money-making scheme. Nothing more.
- PATSCRU, on 10/10/2007, -50/+92Why is chase being dugg down? I hate scientology as much as the next guy, but if were going to scrutinize a religion, we can't pick and choose which religions to scrutinze. Christian missionaries are guilty of the same, if not worse.
- zanekessie, on 10/10/2007, -3/+44I don't care about the whole religion aspect for recruits, what irks me is when they go in and try to offer this "therapy", whilst trying to brainwash people against psychology and the mental health sector in general. I know that the United States doesn't have the best services for mental health, but they are heck of a lot better then Scientologists ways of dealing with it.
- TheRealToma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+38Maybe it was the ***** ALIENS. I really dont care much for religion, but I hate scams more so.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33” ... Help me Tom Cruise! Tom Cruise use your witchcraft to get the fire off me!”
- Lyght, on 10/10/2007, -7/+35I agree with prisoner24601's reply to your comment. And to add, since when do Christian religions charge you to join? Since when do Christian religions force you to never see your family again if they disagree with your beliefs?
It's laughable to compare Scientology to real, non-profit religions. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+33He said cite, not just say a random place without proof.
- DesignNerd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28NOOOOOOOOOO MY FELLOW MINNESOTANS!!
Reject them! Pleeeease! Don't let your Minnesota Nice be taken advantage of! Let others who need help feel your goodwill and let not the vultures of Scientology abuse L'Etoile du Nord!
They wear yellow! Pretend they are Packer fans! ANYTHING! Defend yourselves! - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+28***** these guys, they don't belong in Minneapolis.
I guess I'm gonna have to grab my baseball bat and go beat some scientologists down by the river. - mrsammercer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28uh, i remember a "chuch of jesus christ of latter day saints" commercial being on the tv about every other commercial back in the day. just so you know, that's the mormon church.
- bocaJWho, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Nor are offering any help. They are posing as therapists, while their religion itself rejects psychology.
- Tanishh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25Perhaps, but what if we are Atheist?
- dbhaley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24Bravo. Well put.
- Cyberen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Taking advantage of a tragedy like a sweet-talking ladies man picking up a recently-dumped girl.
- doddilus, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25"those people arent real christians."
go to google and type "no real scotsman" - Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20"The church says that its yellow-shirted 95,000 ministers around the world perform good deeds out of a sense of charity."
That's funny, Elron would tell you that charity was a sign of weakness. - zappo1776, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16I am an atheist and don't trust organized religion either but I have to admit that it was Quakers and certain fundamentalist Christians who spearheaded the efforts to help Darfur, Congo, Rwanda etc.
- IsmailOo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17this is one of the worst kinds of evil, using good for the sake of recruiting into a cult... I mean come on, Scientology is a crazy ***** cult... the founder was a science fiction writer turned religious holy man, I mean you can clearly tell he was using allot of his science fiction as the core of Scientology... I mean you want me to believe that 'Thetans' are the reason why bad ***** happens and by reading restarted books like 'DIANETICS' i will be able to stop the 'Thetans'... and for all you who don't know what Thetans are; read this:
"When a person dies – or, in Scientology terms, when a thetan abandons their physical body – they go to a "landing station" on the planet Venus, where the thetan is re-implanted and told lies about its past life and its next life. The Venusians take the thetan, "capsule" it, and send it back to Earth to be dumped into the ocean off the coast of California. Says Hubbard, "If you can get out of that, and through that, and wander around through the cities and find some girl who looks like she is going to get married or have a baby or something like that, you're all set. And if you can find the maternity ward to a hospital or something, you're OK. And you just eventually just pick up a baby." To avoid these inconveniences, Hubbard advised Scientologists to refuse to go to Venus after their death.[3][4]"
Also if you want to be more shocked about Scientology lies, google this.. 'Prince Xenu'.. he is the intergalactic prince that blew up all the Thetans with hydrogen bombs.. lol, I mean seriously.. anyone with a little bit of brain power can obviously see what a lie this big money making cult is. - championchap, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Considering the state of my Great Uncles mind, I find that post quite offensive.
If giving him drugs stops him locking himself in his room for weeks on end and trying to jump off of clock towers, then im all for them.
Get off of your high horse and try living with somebody like that. - Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Great, so next time you become ill you can volunteer to not take any drugs at all.
- TheJenks, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23Im hoping your comment made here was without thought as its the dumbest thing Ive read in a while. Ive never heard of any person being denied something if they do not convert to Christianity. Im not a religious person but don't think its fair to compare Scientology with with actual people who mean well.
- inhaler, on 10/10/2007, -12/+27Read "Things fall apart" by Achebe. Plenty in there about missionaries meddling with indigenous cultures.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Can somebody set up an atheist rapid disaster-response group? To go around and reassure people that bad things happened to them not because of an invisible man in the sky, but because there's no such things as fate, destiny, or divine punishment?
- CaseyJay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Aim for the head, it's the only way to kill a zombie!
- Tarnum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Aid? You means sales?
The therapies they promote are not free. You have to pay for the sessions. - PueSi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I don't see how brainwashing them helps.
- monoloco, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Congratulations, that's probably the most ignorant thing I've read on Digg in a long time. Though there is a subset of the mental health sector overprescribing and overdiagnosing (ADHD comes to mind), you must have no idea how many people it truly helps, and if you're going to say otherwise, try actually supporting your claims.
- neocognitism, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Stop comparing Scientology to other established religion. Maybe if Scientology released their scriptures to the world like every other religion has they could allow themselves to earn that categorization in our eyes, but until then it's just a secretive organization with opaque and therefore untrustworthy goals.
I mean really, what are they holding back for? If someone could offer me a thorough justification for the obfuscation I would appreciate it. - Mysticum, on 10/24/2007, -5/+17Actually, the impression that there are more atheists here than the society in which he lives might be accurate, for a number of reasons. First, this is an international forum, with members from all over the world. Large parts of Europe are atheist. If this were a strictly northern European forum, for example, you could probably expect 9 out of 10 visitors to be atheists. Secondly, and more importantly, this is a forum for somewhat educated people, given the nature of the beast. Education and Christianity certainly mix to an extent, especially if you consider American college degrees to be real education, but the fact of the matter is that the smarter any given crowd is, the less likely it will be to start chanting and preaching.
- Guagloves, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Scientologists were a mere 1 hour or so from my home? But I wanted to mock their silly ways. Damn.
- PigThief, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17You may not like sake, but I think calling it worthless oil could be quite offensive to the Japanese. Honestly, many people enjoy the drink.
- schroeder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Well since Scientology isn't a religion but an admitted scam by L. Ron Hubbard, I'm pretty sure it's a mission to embarrass Scientology.
- Smills, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Well, to be fair, some are just lies.
- dbhaley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Saw that one coming.
- TygerrTygerr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Actually, it does. Religion is simply a defined set of beliefs. Whether or not it's an officially state-sanctioned religion is quite something else entirely.
- Plinkotic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I know alot of idiots that are happy. Some are christians, some are athiests, and some are just TOO STUPID TO LOOK AT THE WORLD AROUND THEM.
/ignorance, especially of the willful variety, is like heroin to these fools - andymadigan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11They still do, I saw one of those commercials about a week ago. In fact AFAICT they're the only religion that does so (in the U.S.).
- ThndrShk2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Thats what they want you to think. Brainwashing is tricky business yo.
- bocaJWho, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Taxing the church should be enough. If their money is going to truly charitable works, they can open their books to scrutiny from the IRS and prove it. If it is going to making a few followers of L Ron Hubbard rich, they pay for it like everyone else. Similarly, if they are just using to money to build a bigger church - see LA's crystal cathedral - they would have to save enough to afford to pay for taxes.
- bsmang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Check out Scientology sometime ... They do a lot of work to hide unflattering views of themselves, and they're pretty far from 'benign'.. They haven't been around very long. They just need more time to hone their processes to become more well-known (for their evil).
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+17Although you have some good points here are some things to consider: Digg is a forum for everyone, it may be more accurate that the number of atheists in the world is disproportionate to your expectations, theres nothing stopping Christians from voting here. Bashing organized religion does not imply atheism.
- TheHappyRobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10If I was ever caught up in some sort of horrible incident, I would find some comfort in the opportunity to smack one of those creepy bastards right in the face (and get away with it).
- mookiemookie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11It's okay. Our little friend here just saw Sicko and took the message the wrong way. You know how kids get all excitable after watching a movie.

What is Digg?
