School teacher arrested for allowing pupils to name teddy bear 'Muhammad'
news.bbc.co.uk — A British school teacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad. Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

- Drahkar, on 11/26/2007, -4/+11All I can think is that this is the exact reason that if you are going to someplace you should research their customs a little. Its not a huge deal between Canada, USA, Britain, Ireland, etc but when you go to places like Japan or the Middle East or Far Asia then its almost a whole different world.
- HarryBauzonia, on 11/26/2007, -2/+22I agree, but I also believe that they should be held to the same expectations when they come here.
- Drahkar, on 11/26/2007, -2/+5I wouldn't argue that point. But you know perfectly well it would never happen. Too many 'Political Correctness' groupies out there. I'm all for treating each other with respect, but when I can't depict something in a comic in mainstream distribution without few of a lawsuit.. That's the sad state of things at the moment.

Please don't send the party van.- iamsamed, on 11/26/2007, -19/+8You know you pointed out the stupidity of patriarchal - you know, the ones that treat women as property - societies. It's not ISLAM, but unfortunately, there's plenty of assholes in the World who use ISLAM as an excuse for being an *****. Oh, the same goes for Christians, Jews, Buddhists, etc, etc..
- Calesta, on 11/26/2007, -7/+11Actually, you're pointing out the problem of any system that promises rewards in another life for actions in this life. It mitigates the outcomes in this life, and thus people do horrid things in this life. Whether you believe there is another life or not (I personally do not), it's a mistake to disdain this life in hope of another.
- ostracize, on 11/26/2007, -3/+11You make the false assumption that people do horrid things in this life in exchange for a reward in an afterlife. That is actually rarely the case.

- jjesusfreak01, on 11/26/2007, -0/+32This would be like naming a teddy bear here "John". Its a common name, and doesn't have to have any religious connotations unless you want to give them to it. This is ridiculous, and its making Muslims look like idiots, so there really ought to be a Muslim uprising crying for the release of this teacher.
- Akaji, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3Or naming it "Jesus" in a Hispanic country.

- reechme, on 11/26/2007, -4/+230It's not funny. It's an example of the short-tempered, selective belief of a certain sect of people. If you're brought up to hate, you'll find any reason to hate - such as cartoons, misnamed toys, and the like.

- spyrochaete, on 11/26/2007, -1/+72Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Muhammed the single most common name in the human race??
- tedhead2k, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4That's what I was thinking, but I think it's more of an issue that such a sacred name was given to a teddy bear, which isn't quite as flattering.
- spyrochaete, on 11/26/2007, -0/+13You're correct, of course. It's a shame the gesture couldn't be perceived for what it really is - the majority of students in this class apparently love Muhammed so much that they want to be reminded of him via an avatar in their classroom. Apparently they love him the wrong way.
- skyfire1, on 11/27/2007, -5/+3It's okay to name a dildo Muhammad or so I've heard.
- weeeezzll, on 11/26/2007, -3/+10Maybe if said teddy bear were converted to Islam then these arresting officials could find it in their hearts to release this teacher? Oh, who am I kidding? These people have no hearts...

- xxTazxx, on 11/26/2007, -9/+29Wait a minute please don't generalize like that to millions of people, I can guarantee most of muslims will say that this is just stupid, do you actually think we all agree to this? I read this on the Metro today and the first thing that came to my head was, and I quote, "WTF". Just because Bush is being a total nutcase does not mean that I believe all Christians are nutcases, and just because some athiest guy kills a bunch of people in cold blood means I will say athiests are all angry. Its just common sense mate. Its just sad that I have somehow become some sort of "short-tempered, selective" person because of what some idiots in Sudan are doing in the name of Islam.
- weeeezzll, on 11/26/2007, -1/+10I don't see anywhere in reechme's comments where he generalized to include all Muslims. As a matter of fact he specified "sect" which indicates that he is referring to a subgroup of the religion in question.
- weeeezzll, on 11/26/2007, -3/+4"Oh, what a give away. Did you here that, did you here that, eh? That's what I'm on about -- did you see him repressing me, you saw it didn't you?"
- speerross, on 11/26/2007, -2/+16To say all Muslims would be a sweeping generalisation, but this is not small amount of people. Remember the riots over the Danish cartoons? Theres a hell of a lot of Muslims that get pissed off about stuff like this

- HarryBauzonia, on 11/26/2007, -0/+19Sure they would. And I would expect that it would go no further than that.
It certainly wouldn't go to court and it absolutely wouldn't result in 40 lashes. Civilization vs. barbarism, see.

- SillyDigger, on 11/26/2007, -1/+13I'm sure someone would be upset but Ms. Gibbons wouldn't be placed under arrest to face "40 lashes" if something like that happened in Arkansas.

Three words for you, "War on Christmas"- theantix, on 11/26/2007, -5/+34Yeah, the jails here are full of people whose only crime was insulting the imaginary christian deity. And I still can't believe they executed that Seattle airport administrator who took down the christmas trees last year.
- ICSU, on 11/27/2007, -4/+9When Christianity was the age of Islam, it used to be the same if not worse in Europe.
- F0RMLESSNESS, on 11/26/2007, -6/+3ummmm... oh come on, sure the war on christmas thing is ridiculous, but they don't throw you in jail, beat, rape and or just plain kill you for it.
HOWEVER, if you're a westener who is living in a Islamic country and you really don't know that kind of thing would get that reaction there, well congratulations you deserve what you get. Know your surroundings Dumbass!- counterplex, on 11/26/2007, -5/+3I was going to say something about being non-white in the south to really experience the jail, beatings, rape and/or death but I realized you don't have to be any particular ethnicity - just insult NASCAR or proclaim your love for gays and you too can have the same treatment without leaving the US :)
Top Gear did it best - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHj25zd1K_A - blagoaw, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Separation of church and state prevents religious prosecution by the state. Christians aren't necessarily or naturally any better. It is the system of government that sheds light on the necessity of tolerance, not the religion.

- staticneuron, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1This is because people in this country are trying to keep religion and state affairs seperate. I don't want to even imagine what would happen in america if our laws were goverened by christian fundamentalist.
- theantix, on 11/26/2007, -5/+34Yeah, the jails here are full of people whose only crime was insulting the imaginary christian deity. And I still can't believe they executed that Seattle airport administrator who took down the christmas trees last year.
- staticneuron, on 11/26/2007, -19/+27I don't know... I seem to remember a certain religious group getting irrate over works of fiction like harry potter, the davinci code and more recently, the golden compass.
- GreyICE, on 11/26/2007, -0/+18Yeah, I've got to say there's a magnitude problem there. Burning books versus lashing people. Protests and letters to the editor versus assassins and death threats. Chrisitianity certainly has some self-image problems, especially as expressed by a lot of fundimentalists, but frankly its nowhere close to the level of Islam.
- TsuruchiBrian, on 11/26/2007, -1/+43Scientology?
- Theisos, on 11/26/2007, -1/+17Nope. Scientology was built to ensure it works toward the destruction of those who try to destroy it. Their attacks against those who attack is is derived from the need to preserve Scientology. It isn't even a real religion. Its sole purpose is to enhance your stupidity so your money can be stolen.
- speerross, on 11/26/2007, -5/+3"Its sole purpose is to enhance your stupidity so your money can be stolen."
And other religions are for...enlightenment? Give me a break... - Akaji, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3At least most other religions don't say "if you give us money, you'll feel better about yourself!" Many religions do ask for donations, but a very large sum of that money goes to aid work in developing and poverty-afflicted nations. Scientology, on the other hand, asks for money for the sole purpose of gaining money for the higher-ups... it's essentially the biggest pyramid scheme ever imagined.

- spyrochaete, on 11/26/2007, -14/+28Isn't all religion equally insecure? Religion is based on dogma which crumbles under a microscope.
- ostracize, on 11/26/2007, -12/+8That's your experience. Arrogant prick.
- alexforcefive, on 11/26/2007, -5/+6Haha. So are you muslim, christian or scientologist? =D
- Matri, on 11/27/2007, -4/+2I'm guessing scientologist. Notice how he instantly counterattacked you in an attempt to discredit you?
- ostracize, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2C'mon, it really isn't that hard to distinguish between opinion and fact. Spyrochaete passes on opinion as absolute fact and that is just pathetic. He/she gives atheism a bad name.
If you all must know, I am Christian and have found it to be far more than dogma that "crumbles under a microscope" whatever the hell that means. In my experience, it can present itself as secure and true through our words and actions.
Believe me, I want nothing more than to respect the opinions of atheists but I find it very difficult when they group "religion" in the same bucket they think we all belong in and then assume it's true.
- alexforcefive, on 11/26/2007, -5/+6Haha. So are you muslim, christian or scientologist? =D

C'mon now... it's not the fault of the religion.. it's the fault of those who perpetuate it wrongly.- ICSU, on 11/27/2007, -2/+1Wrongly? Sudan follows the Islamic Sharia law!
- Daiken, on 11/27/2007, -2/+11As a Muslim, I can tell you Muslims in general are not insecure at all. The issue we're seeing here and all around the world are a few hard liners who feel it's them against the rest of the world. A lot of this stems from pure ignorance and intolerance. Unfortunately there's no central authority, school of thought, or set of beliefs that everyone agrees to or follows. So a lot of these groups end up acting independently and it's hard for others to do anything when the actions of a few end up reflecting the majority.
- unfilterthought, on 11/27/2007, -6/+1Its not the relegion. Its the relegious leaders.
Islam is the only relegion that teaches its followers that the whole world is out to get them.
The way they act sometimes, it just might come true.

This isn't idolatry. It isn't defaming the prophet muhammad. It's naming a teddy bear with a name that is common in the country/society. It's personification of the bear, that's why a ***** VOTE WAS HELD ON THE DAMN BEAR'S NAME! If the intention was idolatry, they'd be worshipping the bear, and the names up for vote would have been Muhammad, Mohammed, and Muhammed.
It's like they have a meeting, what outrageous ***** can we do this week that will demonstrate our will to be absolutely ***** stupid in the face of world progress. 13th Century civilisations ftw?- pentalive, on 11/26/2007, -3/+17Isn't ever third guy there named Muhammad?
Please address fatwas to /dev/null - marsbar, on 11/26/2007, -0/+18The 13th Century would be a quantum leap forward for Islam. Muhammad died in 632 AD having revealed the immutable word of Allah in the Koran. Muslims throughout the world base their lives on this 7th Century document and the prevailing 7th Century morality. While all other belief systems have moved beyond their founding mythology to varying degrees Islam is bound on following their particular brand of lunacy to the letter. It is wrong to equate Islam with other religions. The key difference is that where there might be tolerance for debate within the frameworks of the other religions which may lead gradually to rationality, in Islam this idea is explicitly heretical. I don't make these statements lightly, only after careful study, without malice and with complete intellectual honesty.
- twisterrust, on 11/26/2007, -4/+5I agree with you for most of the first part, but just to make sure you understand, you thinking that rest of the religions have become rational is IRRATIONAL. Rest of the religions are same except that are not practiced with the same intensity as Islam.

- Rikm, on 11/27/2007, -1/+4But there are plenty of words that are taboo in so called enlightened western cultures that would leave a teacher in ***** if she let a class of kids use the name in a class project.
N****r, F*g, H*mo, would be definites and an ignorant Sudani teacher in a foreign western school on a cultural exchange like this woman from Liverpool might not realize the implications and let it slip. The fact she was ignorant wouldn't stop her ass from getting fired though, just as being ignorant of the fact that while it's OK to honour Mohamed by naming your son after him, it's not OK to name an inanimate object that way shouldn't protect this teacher from facing the consequences in Sudan. When in Rome as they say, but the school should take some of the blame here for not giving the teacher adequate cultural training.
Think back to the Digg story the other week about Santa being banned from saying "Ho, Ho, Ho" because it may offend women, or how about Nintendo having to recall Mario Party 8 in the UK because it had the word "spastic" in the translation. Just because us westerners don't get all that offended about our religions doesn't mean we don't go overboard on other stuff.

"Muhammad is now second only to Jack as the most popular name for baby boys in Britain and is likely to rise to No 1 by [2008], a study by The Times has found."- marsbar, on 11/26/2007, -1/+0The way you report that statistic distorts reality a little. Really what's happening is that there is a high likelyhood of boys born to muslim parents will be called Muhammad, where as boys born to non muslim parents have names that are more widely distributed. Of all boys born in Britain the percentage of boys named Muhammad is probably quite small even though it is the most popular name. Britain is not about to be over run by people named Muhammad. However the alarming thing about this story is amazing lack of imagination and all round zealotry in the British Muslim population.

Islam clearly states that women are not only worth less than a man (as does the old testimat in the bible), but it also implies women should basically be kept as sex slaves. If you read it, it's a violent man's wed dream. In fact , it states that Muhammad can marry any women he chooses (read that as ***** anyone he wants). Not that the Bible is any more believable, but the Koran is much more violent and horribly unfair towards women.
