- kowcun, on 09/03/2008, -8/+122Those are some epic pictures there. boston.com has amazing photographers
- anagoge, on 09/04/2008, -1/+83Boston.com does photo stories better than any other site I've seen. On most sites, all you get is a 300px wide image and if you're lucky, a Next arrow that will load an entirely new page just for one more 300px wide photo.
Congrats Boston.com for being sensible. - muslax27, on 09/04/2008, -5/+65That flamethrower looks awesome
- RevAradia, on 09/04/2008, -14/+58is it just me or do a lot of those shots look amazingly like the old Viet Nam pictures?
- tkcom, on 09/04/2008, -8/+42Great pics... but more importantly, I want everyone to come back alive.
- ccb621, on 09/04/2008, -0/+29The members of the U.S. armed forces are the photographers. Some were also taken by AP/Reuters/Getty Images photographers.
- Sp0rAdiC, on 09/04/2008, -3/+32Join the army and you can use it too!
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -2/+31those pics are absolutely brilliant.
- pell, on 09/04/2008, -5/+33Understood, but I wished people would drop the political talk sometimes. This would be a good time. Just view the photos and appreciate what they're doing for you.
- darkstar949, on 09/04/2008, -0/+22Well, he is, except with fire.
- sh0rtstop00, on 09/04/2008, -0/+21they aren't cheap about hosting photos in high resolution..
- dykast, on 09/04/2008, -5/+25GENERATION KILL
watch it - mark076h, on 09/04/2008, -0/+18As a former Marine i can tell you how great of a series it was, All of the equipment and uniforms was authentic, the way the Marines acted, everything about it was dead on, really amazing series, the book is great also.
The funny part and probably sad part is that most people will sit on their couch watching it thinking it's just some TV Mini series but EVERYTHING in Generation Kill really happened and similar events continue to this day in Iraq and it's not just exclusive to Iraq, it's called WAR. - ALPHABETlQUE, on 02/01/2009, -0/+16beautiful photographs
- twiztidsinz, on 09/04/2008, -10/+25Same war, different generation.
- CaptainAmerica1, on 09/04/2008, -8/+22"...Too bad the U.S. had to ruin what was running smoothly..."
Oh yes...Saddam made sure things were "running smoothly..." by killing millions of his own people, burying them in mass graves, and torturing (and, I don't mean water-boarding) the rest!!!
Your comments sealed your fate as an ignorant dictator-lover. - JoeDiggsIt, on 09/04/2008, -1/+13I have a feeling that some of these pictures may be used in history texts in the future about the war in Iraq. Wonderful, powerful photography.
- RSS14, on 09/04/2008, -2/+11Damn, these pictures are stunning!
Best of luck to the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. - MaxterICC, on 09/04/2008, -0/+9cannonballs are totally the covert way to enter the water.
- Ellipsys, on 09/04/2008, -0/+9During the rule of Saddam Hussein, Iraq was the only Arabic/Middle Eastern nation to have a functional synagogue, if I recall correctly. Christians, Jews, Sunni, Shi'ite... all lived in Iraq. So long as your love of old "Uncle Saddam" came first, you could practice whatever religion you wanted. Radicals of any type (including Islamic ones) were not permitted in the country, and Wahabist crazies like Osama Bin Laden hated Saddam, because he basically created a secular, totalitarian nation instead of an islamic theocracy.
- tidu, on 09/04/2008, -1/+10pic 16 is straight out of Gears of War
- Jexie, on 09/04/2008, -0/+9Going bankrupt so China can get some great oil contracts.
- steviesteveo, on 09/04/2008, -5/+13It's amazing how casual the soldier using it is, it's as if he's just watering his lawn.
- ansatsu29, on 09/04/2008, -1/+9Great shots. The pictures did tell a story about what's inside in Iraq.
- chaiwalla, on 09/04/2008, -2/+10Do you mean what are we really doing there, or what do we say we are doing?
The answer to the first question is that we are establishing control over the area of the world that has huge accessible oil reserves.
The answer to the second question is that we are stabilizing the area so that it can settle down and embrace democracy, American style. This will make Americans safe from rogue dictators. It is a good question. Many of the men fighting there don't know what we are doing there.
The only stupid question is the one you are afraid to ask. - mgill3, on 09/04/2008, -3/+11Ok well why not just answer the question? Seriously, I wanna know.
- tdmeth, on 09/04/2008, -1/+9Wow. Civility on digg? The two of you set an example that more people on here should follow.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -2/+10@pell
You are right. I apologize. - CaptainAmerica1, on 09/04/2008, -0/+8@ Wootfaced,
What makes you think that any people, any religion, any population, or any nationality needs to be "controlled"??? - inactive, on 09/04/2008, -1/+9If you guys want to know what's going on, email message me and I'll gladly share.
As an Army officer, I'm proud of the progress we've made over there despite staunch opposition from those back in the states that wanted us to pull out before our job was done.
Things have finally taken a turn for the better, and I believe we are now at that stage where we can leave victorious and return home.
I know that sounds like McCain rhetoric and a talking point, but it's true.
God bless my fellow comrades who fought along side of me ... and God bless those who died in defense of this country.
Great photos! - Kordras, on 09/04/2008, -6/+13Some great shots, number 24 is my favorite.
- yosserhughes, on 09/04/2008, -3/+10What a pretentious prick you are. Answer the man: if you can't, then STFU.
- Arkons24, on 09/04/2008, -6/+13With Iraq lies our hope for the future of the middle east. Let's hope democracy breeds there and grows as it has elsewhere.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -0/+7We do this to burn down shrubbery in areas where the insurgents often run wires leading to IED's and other road-side bombs. Those types of areas also could be used for ambush attacks agains Coalition + Iraqi Security Forces.
- kidcodea, on 09/04/2008, -4/+10here, take this cup of stfu tea i prepared just for you
- st3vo, on 09/04/2008, -0/+6Take it from another photographers perspective, wow.
- Asianwaste, on 09/04/2008, -0/+6I think he's using it more as a utility than a shock weapon.
- charm803, on 09/04/2008, -2/+8I cannot even imagine living like that.
Can you imagine looking out your window and seeing troops out there all the time and being scared of all the violence?
Awesome photos. - grantface, on 09/04/2008, -2/+8Just come home.
- Halsfield, on 09/04/2008, -0/+6the splash covers your entry.
- crackerjack20, on 09/04/2008, -1/+6It always amazes me how much crap our soldiers carry around with them. I get tired when I've got my pockets full of stuff like my wallet, cell phone, money, keys, gum, pens, etc. These guys must have 50 pounds of gear strapped to their chests in the farking desert while people are shooting at them. It's goddamn amazing. There's no way I'd be able to do that. While I think the war is wrong, way too long, and a big waste of money, you've got to admire the individual spirit of each soldier who continues to get up every day and work his ass off. I hope they can all come home soon.
- CosmicJustice, on 09/04/2008, -0/+5The flame thrower is a tool and he's doing a job; clearing tall grass probably for hours at a time. Not much different from breaking concrete all day with a jack hammer.
- Blydchyld, on 09/04/2008, -0/+5Jerry, your in the process of being 'owned' by the interwebs.
Please, as your the font of knowledge, can you advise us of the reason that our forces are currently deployed in Iraq?
Cause I'll be dammned if i know. - inactive, on 09/04/2008, -4/+9If you guys want to know what's going on, email message me and I'll gladly share.

Great photos! - aijalon, on 09/04/2008, -2/+7Image #4: There was a Jewish area in central Baghdad?
Image #17: Seems like a little too much info given about that particular solider. - Sublimin4L, on 09/04/2008, -3/+8Thank you, Captain Optimist.
- solid12345, on 09/04/2008, -1/+6The thing about Iraq is it is in the heart of the Arab world, it is a unique country where 3 ethnic/sectarian people live and barely get along, and we are facing a generation of young Arab men with no jobs and no education picking up an AK-47 in one hand and a Quran in the other.
Was the war about WMD? No. Was it because Saddam was a threat to the world? No. But the fact is the whole region needs a political facelift, it is not good for the stability of the world for the world's oil supplies to be resting in a region run by deranged military mad men, corrupt families (the Assads) or wacko Mujahadeen men like Bin Laden.
If there is any proof America is committed to doing a 180 on its foreign policy and bolstering democratic underpinnings, look at the support we have given Lebanon the last few years when under Reagan, Carter, and Bush we pretty much let it all go to chaos.
We have also given legitimacy to Abbas's PLO movement and support for a democratic transition of a Palestinian state while rejecting the hard-line militancy of Hamas, which is NOT democratic, even if they won the majority of the votes because legitimate democratic parties do not roam the streets with guns like gangsters. At least the PLO keeps a legitimate security force that is well regulated. - xaryss, on 09/04/2008, -5/+10even though everyone else will vote your comment down, I agree.
- wondertwins, on 09/04/2008, -4/+9pic 25 reminds the beginning of MGS3.
