Islam requires that the woman give EXPLICIT consent and the marriage ceremony is invalid if she does not give the consent of her OWN accord. It is the backwards CULTURE that is forcing these underage girls into these marriages and it is NOT Islamic at all! Please don't confuse the two!
Don't bash the wrong thing here; be intelligent and disparage their culture for being backwards, don't insult the religion that is against these practices. While living there I remember one night the entire lighting in the village had been interrupted due to various reasons that are too long to list but at the same time a family about 500 yards from my families house was having a gathering. The gathering, even though there was no light and poor weather, two families had come together to setup an arranged marriage (aka forced marriage). From the distance you could see the house lighting up with candle light and chants of celebration. It was the only house that was lit up in my entire village.
The celebration went late into the night and it slowly dwindled around 1 AM and after an hour or two of quietness we started to hear shrieks and cries coming from the same house. The celebration turned into lament of cries.
The next day I learned that the girl, as heart breaking as it is I forget her name, had killed herself in the shower with a shotgun because of the situation she was put in.
she was beautiful and amazingly smart. Every time I had a chance I would go to her house and she would cook food for me and she took it upon herself to help out any one else that needed it. If I remember correctly she was 14 (max 16) at the time.
I didnt think much of it at the time since I was a child but years later as I matured things changed and to this day it haunts me.
Anyway, what I am trying to say, as a person who has been somewhat close to an women who was forced into an arranged marriage and decided to take her own life over a life under a submissive patriarchal rule by both the husband and the government, I feel ashamed to be a man and secondly a man from the middle east. The middle east, as beautiful as the people are, as beautiful as the culture somewhat is, as beautiful as the ruins and history may be, it doesn't help the fact that the middle east is full of backward people.
I came out of a women, I was created by a women therefor I worship women and do everything to make their life around me better but everyday I read about such atrocities and acts of complete and utter works of evil as this one and I lose hope in humanity.
Its time for men everywhere to give up their seat to women since they are simply tender and fragile.
Its time for men to stop raping women
Its time for men to stop telling women what to do
Its time for men to stop reading books and worshiping deities that belittle women and turn them into objects of desire
Its time for men to remember that all women are possibly someones mother, someones sister and someones grandmother or niece or cousin and not created to be used for our own sexual desires.

I don't mean to offend any Christians, but I'm just pointing out that there are plenty of people around the world who simply use a label and don't actually live up to what they say!
Now go talk to a Muslim who lives in the U.S. or Canada or Britain or somewhere and ask them what they think. Then go talk to a "Muslim" who lives in Saudi Arabia and see if you get different answers!
Also (just for your info) not all "Islamic" countries are marrying off their young children. Look at Indonesia, it is the worlds "most populous Muslim-majority nation" (from Wikipedia) and you never once hear about young children being forced to marry old people do you? That should prove to you that it is a CULTURAL thing where young children are forcibly married off to older people in Saudi Arabia. It *is* about money. And it's a direct violation of Islam's very clear teachings that forcing a woman to marry is forbidden, and that only she can accept suitors.
We see those scumbags in the news from time to time and we're just as outraged. There were many examples of this throughout history, like when the king of england decided to start his own church because the existing one didn't let him get divorced. That's quite sexist. Considering women weaker and inferior is part of the problem. Sure, men have a natural biological strength and endurance advantage, but that hardly makes women fragile little china dolls that are unequal to standing on the bus. Unless they are elderly, really young, disabled, pregnant, your wife/girlfriend (they can get cranky if you take a seat over them...it's just easier), or your mother, that seat is yours and giving to someone else just because they happen to be female is just like saying "Here.
