- vtbarrera, on 04/06/2009, -12/+28I just don't see the sense in needing more invasive spy tech. So what if North Korea was "testing their space technology", I just think that the US eventually uses tech like this to invade our privacy. Down with big brother!
- borez, on 04/06/2009, -3/+15They still have money left over for spy satellites?
- gcnaddict, on 04/06/2009, -0/+12lol what the *****
- FireStalker3150, on 04/06/2009, -3/+14gay
- Painkilla05, on 04/06/2009, -0/+10I wish they did. Then maybe their citizens wouldnt be impoverish and it could be thriving like SK.
- Solkre, on 04/06/2009, -3/+12Hey more spy sats is cool, cuz they'll only be used outside the US... right guys?
- y0y0howsdajell0, on 04/06/2009, -0/+7No...
- HunterGathers, on 04/06/2009, -0/+7Are you joking? Food is the answer for all the wold's issues!?!? Since when did any of the countries you listed need help feeding their people because they couldn't produce food?
- Harabeck, on 04/06/2009, -2/+9Maybe we didn't stop it because it could spark an incident, maybe even a war.
- chinaman1212, on 04/06/2009, -0/+7Don't you watch the news? are you serious? really? are you ruting for north Korea?
- thinkb4utype, on 04/06/2009, -3/+10Good intelligence works both ways. It can also stop the spying country from making mistakes based on incomplete or faulty information (Iraq anyone?). These satellite systems are cheap in the long run. $10 billion only buys 6 stealth bombers. We need all the foreign intelligence that can be gathered by all means available.
- orchidee2, on 04/06/2009, -1/+8What for? Why should the US spend so much money for watching a North Korean rocket falling into the ocean?
- BotchaMcCoola, on 04/06/2009, -1/+7One thing has become clear since WW2. Smart folks learn how to captilize on fear in the Land of the "Brave".
- soden240, on 04/06/2009, -0/+6The satellites have a geosynchronous orbit. If it is deployed over North Korea, it is my understanding that it will stay there.
- RumpleForeskin3, on 04/06/2009, -2/+7Go eat some Granola, Hippy.
Your plan sucks. - daze144, on 04/06/2009, -0/+5pLEASE sTOP cAPTIALIZING tHE bEGINNING of eVERY wORD, iT iS vERY ***** aNNOYING.
- rignopolis, on 04/06/2009, -0/+5Yeah Kim Jung II just wants what's best for his "countrymen", such as putting them in concentration camps and killing them.
- HunterGathers, on 04/06/2009, -1/+6How can a spy sat see anything more of you life than anyone driving down your street or flying a normal aircraft over it. A spy sat. for use in the US is the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Plus what are lookng for? Your larg EGO?
- sheasie, on 04/06/2009, -1/+6The N Korea launch failed:
http://i.gizmodo.com/5199611/north-korea-intercont ...
of course, you probably won't hear about this in the main stream (i.e., "conservative") press -- mostly because "they" do like to keep the "fear-level" elevated (which is the only way they have a chance of selling their $10b spy package to the public, while at the same time whining about Obama spending too much money!?) - drmangrum, on 04/06/2009, -0/+5Because the people of North Korea, Russia, and Iran are a priority of the American military?
Wake up and join the real world pal. North Korea isn't a poor nation, they have the means to feed themselves, but Kim Jong Il STEALS it all from his people. He keeps his PEOPLE poor by keeping an insanely disproportionate military. If it wasn't for him and his regime, N Korea would be a pleasant place to live.
FYI, a satellite is NOT a weapon. It's a tool to gather information. Information that can stop the need to deploy a weapon if a crisis can be averted early. - SwiftKick34, on 04/06/2009, -1/+6omg made my day. Lol did he delete his account? God, you pricks.

- drmangrum, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3@yerdaddy
If you honestly believe that, you're supremely naive. - drmangrum, on 04/06/2009, -1/+4Idiot.
Real life does not mimic the movies. This is not Enemy of the State.
1) There are FAR easier ways to gather information on people than a spy satellite. Phone records, atm cards, online transations, etc. A simple warrant from a local judge can get more information about a person than a spy satellite
2) Satellites are used to observe LARGE areas, structures, and large scale troop and supply movements.
3) I suggest you read up on Information Oversight and Intelligence Oversight. You're woefully ignorant. - ctnp, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3We claim it failed, North Korea claims it was successful. Supposedly the satellite is broadcasting "the immortal revolutionary paeans 'Song of General
Kim Il Sung' and 'Song of General Kim Jong Il'" at "UHF 470 MHz."
I know there are tons of people out there who like to listen in to space-ground radio communications, can someone try to figure out if their songs are raining propaganda down on us?
It seems pretty easy to establish who's telling the truth here. I can get you inclinations, altitudes and cycle speed if that helps. - PandaBearShenyu, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3"North Korea launches a missile that's at best decades from being remotely a threat"
QUICK! TO THE FUNDING MACHINE!
"Chinese blog says they have a missile that can shoot our carriers"
MOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE FUNDINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG - anthropodeus, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3when this NK thing cools down, i bet you 10G$ that the satellites will be used to spy on china
the irony is that the money for the loan to pay for the satellites would originate from China - PandaBearShenyu, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3"Those who make you believe in absurdities make you committ atrocities".
- anthropodeus, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3no, his idea makes sense! the reason the US is so militaristic is that its people dont have enough food.
- Culyt, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3@Bobski:
Yeh, because the people in charge are doing such a ***** great job.
America is now 9 Trillion Dollars in debt form a war that was a response to an attack from a completely different country causing the worlds economy to go to hell. - anthropodeus, on 04/06/2009, -2/+5these satellite systems are totally unnecessary. the whole time this NK missile thing was going down, i kept hearing reports of "US SATELLITE PHOTOS SHOW ROCKET HEADING TO PLATFORM" . . . "US SATELLITE PHOTOS SHOW ROCKET BEING FUELED" . . . "US SATELLITE PHOTOS SHOW BULBOUS, SATELLITE-LIKE OBJECT ON END OF ROCKET"
we obviously have plenty of satellites keeping an eye on korea. to me, this whole thing sounds like a big brother-esqe, "make the people focus on the common enemy instead of on their own economic suffering" campaign - biotch, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3Thats it.... which companies sell printing presses.... Its time to invest.
- yerdaddy, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3rest of my post-
"C'mon people, think."
If NK had a spy satellite postioned over N. America I wouldn't doubt we'd blow it apart. I also don't doubt that NK would eventually blow up or disable a US satellite spying on them. It's just going to inflame matters. I'm not impressed with the military going anal-retentive with intelligence demands. It's getting out of hand, starting to look pansy even, and ***** Ridiculously expensive.
Also:
"you think America
doesn't have 50 satellites in geosynch orbit from other countries?"
Not with spying capability. - chatty822, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3I don't think the United States should listen to the demands of Russians in Washington who are concerned about the Siberia/China border area. It doesn't concern us! Soviet Army privates grab passengers on the train going from Peking to Xinjiang Province, both in the east-west and the west-east direction, claiming that they are "deserters from the Soviet Army" or "escapees from the Bratsk, Siberia concentration camp" or "escapees from the Dalenzegrad concentration camp" inside China. Most of the inmates are from Korea. There may be a reason for Korea to have border conflicts with Russia and China, because of Russians inside China grabbing "illegals" when they are illegals themselves, but that does not concern the U. S.!
- PandaBearShenyu, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2Hmmm, I think 56Kcowboy is more educated than you in this case, no offense.
No matter what label you put on the money, it's still money that could have been spent improving a host of other things than give them to the defense industry who spends 1 trillion on their airplane toys alone.
10 Billion is a drop i nthe bucket for the military, but can go a long way towards building infrastructure, which is his point, that you completely missed. - drmangrum, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3So what if it does? You think other countries don't have satellites in geosynch orbit over them? Do you think America doesn't have 50 satellites in geosynch orbit from other countries?
C'mon people, think. - drmangrum, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2@Solkre
You insinuated that satellites would be used for spying domestically. That simply isn't the case It's not even remotely feasible to utilize a satellite in such a manor. Domestic spying is done through wire-tapping, ground surveillance, intercepting of mail and e-mail, etc.
Anyone who thinks satellites are a good means of spying on individual people are idiots. I'm not going to "calm down" when I see people making comments about something they do not understand. - yerdaddy, on 04/06/2009, -2/+4Sure, and that wont piss them off at all.
- yerdaddy, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3"You think other countries don't have satellites in geosynch orbit over them? Do you think America
doesn't have 50 satellites in geosynch orbit from other countries?"
That doesn't make it smart. - BigManOnCampus, on 04/06/2009, -2/+4You guys need to look at this practically... the cheapest military is the military that has no active personnel. If you can avoid all conflict by having the proper information at the negotiating table, then your military is being very effective.
- anthropodeus, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2they had this proposal coming down the pipe before the launch even took place. that fact that it failed is irrelevant to them.
- BigManOnCampus, on 04/06/2009, -3/+5@Painkilla05
Actually none, the U.S. has facilities in places where they do not need to launch rockets over other countries to test missiles or missile defense, so your attempt at a riposte is fail.
And, there is no worldwide ban on launching rockets, if there were, the space agencies of the world would not be able to build the ISS together. - ctnp, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2The DPRK doesn't have the technology to make it to geosynchronous orbit. Geosynch is > 42,000 km while the claimed apogee of their satellite is 1,426 km. Quite a big difference.
- Soulflyhigh, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2Main stream press? Like Sky News who DID say that it has been confirmed the satelite didn't make it to orbit?
- wassamatta, on 04/06/2009, -2/+4NK is the new OBL (the new boogeyman). A good boogeyman is an excuse to put more money in military spending and spy on innocent people (like they won't use those satellites domestically).
