San Francisco braces for Olympic torch protests
cnn.com — SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- San Francisco authorities are getting ready for protests Wednesday when runners carry the Olympic torch through the city, hoping to avoid the chaos that disrupted the relay in London and Paris.

The assumption now by CNN and other mainstream media outlets is that any gathering of protesters means there is a threat of violence (even if they're actually protesting violence), so any action taken by the government to minimize the threat is ok.
