- dcipjr, on 10/25/2007, -0/+14I'm living in Tijuana, and the last couple days here, all you can smell has been smoke, and ash has been raining from the skies. It looks somewhat better today -- the winds seem to have died down quite a bit, but you can still see smoke on the horizon.
I took this panoramic picture from my apartment yesterday -- we're up on a pretty high hill, so you can see into the USA.

- thrallie, on 10/23/2007, -0/+10I live in San Diego in the Lomita Village area by Skyline. Right now the fire is in Skyline Hills I believe, pretty ***** close to me. I hope my house doesn't burn down. :-(
- tizz66, on 10/23/2007, -0/+9Best of luck to anyone close by these fires, I hope it all turns out fine for you.
- Jeffrr, on 10/23/2007, -0/+8Yeah, I'm trying to update it. But as of now I'm trying to look for a hotel.
- mjmorrell, on 10/23/2007, -0/+6Great map, this is really hurting san diego right now. I can only breathe smoke over here.
- mrdoing, on 10/23/2007, -0/+6damn dude, that is a scary thought. Good luck!
- handsomehansen, on 10/23/2007, -0/+6I don't know right now if my house has been destroyed by the Rice Canyon Fire. I know for a fact that it jumped the 15 and almost totally destroyed Pala Mesa Resort.

- VirgilNilson, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4I'm not sure how accurate this is. It has a large area marked as "mandatory evacuation" (including my house) that I do not believe have yet been declared as *mandatory* evacuation areas.
- rufusdog, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3Here is a good website for up-to-date traffic speeds if you must travel:
http://traffic.calit2.net/sd/traffic.jsp
Google Earth is also useful if you turn on the traffic layer option. You can mouse over hotspots on the Freeways to see real-time speeds.
Another good news source is kpbs.org. They have switched to static content to accommodate the surge in web traffic.
Signonsandiego.com is disgracefully slow, but what else would one expect from a rag like the Union Tribune? They're still trying to serve up video and pictures while their web-servers are melting. What a joke. - 1kewldude, on 10/23/2007, -1/+4I was surprised to see that there was actually an 'official' fire info page - Los Angeles County Fire Department Emergency Fire Information Page
http://www.fire.lacounty.gov/ - DisgruntledDave, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3I'm more interested to see how the insurance companies are going to try and weasel out of this like they did with Katrina survivors, especially if things don't get better, and more homes are lost. Damage due to fire (so long as it's not arson by the homeowner) is completely covered by all home insurance to my knowledge.
- tizz66, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3I thought the same thing. I read an article about it on BBC News of all places (you'd expect better from them), and the map they attached to the story was of Malibu with celebrity houses marked on the map. It's only because I proactively found out further information that I realised the real serious parts were hundreds of miles away.
Celebrites in all likelihood have another house they can move to. People in SD don't. - XxModestMousexX, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3All my clothes smell like smoke now.
- jefbob, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3Nice shot, at least from where you are at. Does anyone else have any more pictures? News stories are nice, but it is definitely more interesting to see the pictures.

- Sven333, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3It's good to see the Harris fire respect the US-Mexico border.
- Nougat, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3I was also wondering how a city could terminate the employment of a cartographic record.
- MalDON, on 10/23/2007, -2/+5So you went on digg...
- slashbot, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Hopefully the weather subsides and they are able to control the fire.
- slashbot, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2No kidding.
We should just throw our money directly into the fire and save all the trouble - InfiniteNothing, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Burning trees are carbon neutral (aka 0 net carbon) because they are made carbon that was recently in our atmosphere and will likely be replaced with new trees made out of carbon. Also the dust in the air and the increased reflectivity of the smoke should help cool us down too.
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -1/+3My best friend is in Valley Center and I'm in Tennessee passing him info on where to go. Isn't that just sad?
Harrah's casino was being used as an evacuation center and they were headed there, but now I hear it's on fire too. The fire at the La Jolla Indian reservation is now apparently sweeping into Valley Center, but the news outlets are ignoring it in order to talk about what's already burned in Rancho Bernardo; they're still reporting the La Jolla reservation fire as 150 acres but it's much bigger than that now. I see it also hasn't made the map yet although it's been burning for about three hours now.
The sheriff's dept. said that Valley Center road towards Escondido and Highway 76 have just reopened, so anyone in that area can use those roads to get out, but the roads are packed with cars now that mandatory evacuations have been ordered.
Thank you for posting the map. - TsuruchiBrian, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Thanks a lot Ben. This is the best map I have seen so far. I live right on the border of an an evacuation area, so I am just waiting to see if I need to leave.
- ControlledBurn, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2I moved out of North County about 10 years ago and miss it profusely, but the fires lately is just plain nuts.
- Palladian, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Is this page still being updated?
- fugeelama, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Kudos to the OP for making his map, but here's the map everyone should be looking at:

This map is being updated on a pretty regular basis by KPBS (the local PBS affiliate). - CraigJ, on 10/23/2007, -1/+3gee, thanks for trying to turn this is to another Bush bash political discussion. Get a ***** life.
- CZzyzx41, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2How accurate are the perimeter lines on this map? You're showing the corner of Camino Del Norte and I-15 burned. I need to know how accurate that is. Did the complex there burn?
- quiggley, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2What, no updated street view?

- brad77, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1KPBS also has a great Google Map that they are keeping up to date with their Twitter feed. I'm in an evacuation area, and it's been very helpful to stay on top of changing conditions.

http://twitter.com/kpbsnews - cogit0, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1The location of the San Marcos fire you have is inaccurate, possibly picked up from one of the other inaccurate maps. You have the fire location on the San Marcos civic center, and then going into twin oaks valley. The fire was(is?) further south, in the coronado hills/discovery hills area. You're making it look like my house burned down. =P
- Palladian, on 10/23/2007, -0/+176 west of the 15 is open according to AM 760.
15 is moving good at that point.
15 around Deer Springs is slow from all the traffic. - Jeffrr, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1http://video.knbc.com/player/?id=170269
- Palladian, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1small fire south of Lake Poway on Markar Road just popped up according to AM 760
- exbm2, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1Hey, I used to live in La Terraza Apartments
If anyone has pictures of that place on fire can you post em here. Image Shack has decided to not host them anylonger! - mrurc, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I realize that this is incredibly wrong of me but I'm still laughing about the phallic lake on the Eastern side of the map. I know it's wrong, but you gotta see it.
- DisgruntledDave, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I believe the home owner has to light the fire themself. And it isn't neccessarily a loophole they made in the fire insurance, but that it constitutes insurance fraud, which they can nullify the contract for. I don't really think there is a way around this, unless they can find some way of calling it act of god or "wind damage" to those without that insurance.
