- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -12/+49@Ninja
Or could it be that he was convicted of a crime by Iraqis? - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -37/+67I seriously feel like this death sentence verdict is just a way for all the war supporters in our government (Bush, Congress etc.) to attempt to convince the American people that we are making "progress" in the War In Iraq.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29Well, some people do oppose the death penalty. What the hell is your comment supposed to mean?
- nachochease, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Are you serious? Sure the war was a catastrophe, but nonetheless Saddam was a brutal dictator who had torture chambers and rape rooms. The man killed tens of thousands of his own people. Clearly, if anyone deserves to be executed it's Saddam Hussein - and the sooner the better.
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -29/+45Whoever here thinks that Iraq was worse off when it was ruled by Saddam has their head in the sand. He was a military dictator who hated religious fanatacism. He kept all the exetremists down and had one of the most modern and advanced countries in the middle east. He did not have WMD's and he didnt threaten the world with them *cough*N.Korea*cough* HE HAD NO CONNECTION TO 9/11 OR UBL WHAT-SO-EVER. Now its a deathzone/civil war and its only getting worse. Anyone who feels that the war in iraq is justified because we captured saddam is a moron, because in all reality we have just created a new wave of terrorism.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19As much as I hate GWB, comparisons to Saddam are pretty far off. Bush has done some terrible things, but directly ordering the gassing of thousands upon thousands of civilians is strictly Saddam territory. And as much as Bush has quelled dissent and controlled the media, it's nothing like the Baathist government they had under Saddam, when opposing voices were quickly silenced in the most lethal ways.
So hate both but hate them differently, otherwise you're exaggerating Bush's or underestimating Saddam's wrongs. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20I am
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -23/+35@kakwakas
So has George Bush. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Why waste the time if he's going to be killed?
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Wow, sarcasm detectors must be down for the holidays.
- khag7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12i agree. i want a televised hanging.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+29Crass...MOST Iraqis are far better off. Do you know any? Because I do.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm getting mixed signals, xlar54. You might consider a sarcasm tag to help us out.
- enharmonix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@crass:
I did *not* say the Antichrist was coming, did I? You've got your head in the sand. Whether or not *you* believe it, you need to wake up to the fact that there are about 2 billion people on this planet who *do* believe it and are ready to take you out with them. (And I fixed the link this time, I swear)
http://www.google.com/search?q=12th+imam+antichrist - Spire3660, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I really despise the human nature of either you are with us or against us. Why cant I be anti-capital punishment without the automatic response of being pro-saddam in this case? It is really the uniformed mind that cannot easily and readily see the difference.
- forgiste, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8god damnit, people like you piss me off. Name one pro-Saddam comment! Go on, point one out to me! Even the comments that I posted aren't really Pro-Saddam, but more Pro-Doing-things-the-legal-way.
Oh, and if you think this is going to end the war, or even begin to end the war, you're wrong. This is just a by-product of the war, not the main goal. The main goal is to finish installing democracy (a puppet government in Iraq) so that we can control a huge oil reserve, thus upping the prices for countries we don't like.
What if the insurgents get pissed about Saddam being killed and start going ape ***** in other countries... like ours? - DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17One less lunatic out of power... Now that leaves a family of shrubs, if you know what I mean.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7last time i checked, being given the death penalty wasn't being "let off"
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I hope he recites the entire Kurt Cobain suicide note right before he goes. That would be hilarious! But he has to do it word for word ending with "I love you, I love you" Instead, he'll probably be chanting some religious crap and yelling at people who he blames for his quandry. It's gotta suck when your own people kill you.
- robzepeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"The BBC's Peter Greste in Baghdad says the authorities are keeping the time and place of the execution a closely guarded secret. He says we might only know if Saddam Hussein is finally dead after the sentence has been carried out. "
WTF? - venicerocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Absolutely agree.
Every death sentence carried out is a victory for barbarism and a tragic loss for civilisation. No matter what the crimes commited, the killing of another human being should be deplored and those who eagerly await a state-sanctioned revenge killing should be ashamed of themselves. - humperdeath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Here comes the 'Orange Alert' and all the paranoia that goes with that.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4People generally fail to see others as more than one dimensional.. :/
- Spire3660, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My opinion is my own, take it as you will. If you dont like my opinions then digg my comments down or block me. I may not like your opinion or what you have to say, but I would defend to the death your right to say it. This is not a fight, but merely my opinion, to be used at your discretion for good or ill. I am not in the habit nor position of dictating my opinion as anything other than my personal view.
@ Rayfound
Thank you for clarifying my statement, it was not my intention to confuse the issue with semantics. Bad word usage on my part, I apologize. - khag7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yeah but they appealed so it reset the 30 day counter. fortunately he can't appeal anymore.
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8They already did appeal, perhaps you should RTFA. He appealed, but the court upheld the sentence. I think this is wrong though. They should throw him in federal-pound-me-in-the-ass prison for the rest of his life.
- Coven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Video or it didn't happen!
- SkittlesUSA, on 10/12/2007, -25/+29I think it's so funny that he thinks that giving Saddam a well deserved death sentence is just a political move by the government.
Idiot. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They probably could have saved a lot of time and money if they had shot him in his foxhole.
Not that I care much either way. - modifiedbears, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4See Bush kills thousands under the guise of doing something good so people don't get upset. Iraq was in such an obvious position to cause the US immediate harm too. Anyone who thinks Bush is any more innocent than Saddam is delusional.
- starguy, on 10/12/2007, -17/+21ok, next president mass murder on the chopping block!
oh ok wait, its mine... dubya - enharmonix, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14@crass: Gotta disagree with you about Iraq being worse. You have your choice about what kind of power Iraq was going to be in the War on Terror: Russia/China/N. Korea, or Iran/Syria/Afghanistan. Threat = intent * ability. By invading Iraq we *did* increase intent, but the drop in ability is *much* greater. Iran is a much bigger threat than Iraq ever was (intent * ability), but do you think we could ever make to Iran w/ Saddam sitting next door? It would be like USSR vs. Afghanistan, which was a much greater disaster than US vs. Iraq ever was. Iraq did have one of the world's biggest militaries, after all. If you think Iraq is bad now, remember that Iran is who we need to go after -- it would be a nightmare if Saddam were in still power and we decided go after Iran first.
- ravitek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe if he did the vista exploit, the counter will get stuck at 43200 minutes. Saddam will never be executed, and he'll never have to register.
/sorry - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Oh right, I will surely be taking YOUR word for it then!
Moron. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Thank goodness for YouTube!
- Rayfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4By definition it is not murder. Homicide, yes, murder no. Murder, by definition, is the "unlawful killing" of another human. Wars, execution, and Self defense are generally accepted as lawful killing. Execution is LAWFUL because it is the fulfillment of the law. There is a difference.
Whether you agree with capital punishment is a totally separate argument - but don't cloud that with a mis-informed use of the word Murder to describe execution. It just makes you sound like an uneducated emotional mess. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Just because they knew how it was going to end doesn't make it a "sham trial". You still have to go through the system. Perhaps you also think the trials after WW2 were a "sham" trial also?
- grinin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5From his perspective... he must be pretty baffled, having been our friend in terror for so many years in the past... suddenly he's the only bad guy.... but hey... we gotta kill somebody for 911 right?
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Saddam was a monster. He ruled with an iron fist, but I think it is the wrong decision to kill him. What does capital punishment say about a society? I mean, what hope do the Iraqi's ave for peace if they choose to enact vengeance against him? I say they should lock him in a small box somewhere and forget about him. It'll be like he's dead anyway.
- VyPR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Everyone knew how this was going to end, the prosecution could have talked about ewoks and wookies the whole time and Saddam would still be sentenced to death."
Um, NO. Everyone knows that if Chewbacca is a Wookie, you must acquit. Sheesh! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Unfortunately, this means there will be too little time to schedule the pay-per-view event. I guess we will all just have to wait for the youtube video.
- Malarie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Bush should be next.
- madcat87, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6When Bush will be executed for his crimes?
- Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8And so concludes one of the biggest sham trials in recent memory. Everyone knew how this was going to end, the prosecution could have talked about ewoks and wookies the whole time and Saddam would still be sentenced to death. I understand why they needed to bother with a trial, but it ended up deteriorating into a joke with all of the outbursts and circus antics surrounding it. It would have been better to just have acknowledged the futility of a defense in the first place.
- farhanfarn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Great, Whens bush's turn?
- qwertywatcher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Congratulations America and the American puppet government in Iraq. You have proved to all the civilized world that you are barbarians. Name another 1st world nation that would carry out executions in this day and age.
It is a sign of barbarism. Murdering a criminal makes you no better than that criminal.
You all hate how the world perceives you Americans and yet how do you think we should see you. You want us to cheer when you make up excuses to wage a war then execute its leaders. Just remember. One day your Empire will also fall and you had better pray that your conquerer shows more mercy than you have shown your victims.
I for one am happy i am moving back to Europe. I cannot tolerate you backward ways, while we may have our problems at least we do not solve them through butchery. - venicerocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Every death sentence carried out is a victory for barbarism and a tragic loss for civilisation. No matter what the crimes commited, the murder of another human being should be deplored and those who eagerly await a state-sanctioned revenge killing should be ashamed of themselves.
- mookiemookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ adml shake:
Actually, parts of the Nuremburg Trials were a sham. Ask Karl Donitz. When you're convicted for waging "unrestricted submarine warfare" and Chester Nimitz stands up at the trial and says "um, we did the exact same thing, guys" and yet Donitz is STILL imprisoned...yeah, that's a bit of a sham. - coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'd prefer a televised deathmatch between Saddam and all the Iraqi's who hate him--they deserve some revenge through mutilation.
