- BullyJack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"U.S. Ambassador John Bolton lobbied unsuccessfully to drop the rotation system and choose the best qualified candidate. He and other council members lamented that there were only seven candidates — and that none had served as leader of their country."
At least Annan's gone. Hopefully, this new guy won't be as corrupt and incompetent. - Bobombom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Ban Ki-Moon has been known as a very even tempered and well manned representative for Korea. He is also very undisclosed so he doesnt hide or sugarcoat things.
I'm sure he will be a very competent candidate for the position. - raingrove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ban, Ki-moon, (born 13 June 1944) has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) since January 2004. He received his Bachelor’s degree in International relations from Seoul National University in 1970 and earned a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1985. Ban is married and has a son and two daughters. He identifies himself as a non-denominational Christian. He has been recommended as Secretary-General of the United Nations by the United Nations Security Council and is almost certain to succeed Kofi Annan on 1 January 2007.

Overreaction? - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Snap, I don't believe there is a rule preventing a SG from the 5 security council members. There was speculation about Clinton becoming the next.
The first SG was from the UK btw. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From what I have read of him, he has great diplomatic ability and is a man of great integrity. I think Ban Ki moon would make a great UN secretary gneral.
- bshniper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4My thoughts exactly. Emphasis on "hopefully". It would also be nice to have an impeachment process - give the politicians who think they rule the world something to fear.
- BullyJack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It almost wouldn't be a shocker though, would it?
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At first I read that as N. Korea, and I pissed myself a little.
...Okay, more than a little. - goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Heh.. well, immature as it was, it made me laugh :-P
Certainly wasn't going for racism, just a little play on words. Each to their own I guess. - HIPAA_Notic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Slick Willy would have made an excellent U.N. Secretary General. . . but I am not so sure if Kerry would have been a great President. . . . Although I kind of liked his VP choice, J. Edwards.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7The fact that I'm asian?
- ArcticCelt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"...God, yet another lib talking out of his ass before knowing anything... Secretary Generals do not come from any of the five permanent Security Council member nations...."
Its only a tradition.
Sir Gladwyn Jebb (UK) 1945-1946
Trygve Lie (Norway) 1946-1952.
Dag Hammarskjöld (Sweden) 1953-1961;
U Thant (Burma, now Myanmar) 1961-1971;
Kurt Waldheim (Austria) 1972-1981;
Javier Pérez de Cuéllar (Peru) 1982-1991;
Boutros Boutros-Ghali (Egypt) 1992-1996;
Kofi Annan (Ghana) 1997-2006
But its not part of their law or chart; it's only a tradition. If the assembly decide to vote for Clinton its legal. The first one was from the UK by the way.
Oh and by the way, your political "tagging" just make me laugh and sad at the same time; Why do people always have to act like drones and follow their leader? Bahh in a way its OK, you are in the majority. I accepted it long time ago. Its thanks to people like you that we can do good business; if everybody was a free thinker it would be hell the market a product.
Cheers kid - blahblah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Jesus Christ, the UN annual budget is only 5 billion dollars (FTA).
- BullyJack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@BitVector
Kofi Annan is a corrupt, pompous ass. Whenever journalists question him on allegations of wrongdoing, he loses control.
Aside from charges of corruption, he bends over backwards to appease Islamic fascists. His high level of incompetence is beyond compare. How this moron was nominated Secretary General is beyond me.
By the way, investigations are ongoing. - dealsdealer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1and the tradition of "funny-last-name" Secretary-Generals continues ....
- chi1thook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0forget it
- BitVector, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Corrupt? Hardly. He was the least corrupt out of them all. His son has had crooked dealings in the past, and it looked bad on Kofi Annan. So far, though, every investigation on him hasn't turned up anything. He simply cannot be bought out, and some countries hate him for that.
Incompetent? You try running the United Nations and getting what the people want. Before you know it, a large veto-power country will demand you do things "their way" and tell you to screw the rest of the world.
Kofi Annan is a great man and genuinely cares about the people of the world. Unfortunately, when you're running the U.N., you get mocked and criticised constantly by those that cannot directly control you. - SnapETom, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3God, yet another lib talking out of his ass before knowing anything... Secretary Generals do not come from any of the five permanent Security Council member nations.
- Mrkamikaze, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1This is a non-event. Its like saying Brain Henson is taking over Kermit the frog from his dad Jim Henson.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Wow, that was ***** racist right there. Learn a little about foreign nomenclature before you go ***** around with them.
- ArcticCelt, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3If J. Kerry would have won, there was rumors that the plan was to then suggested B. Clinton to the U.N once Annan had left. Bill would have been the man :(
- goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -22/+3South Korea's banned Ki-Moon?! OMFG!
...wait... what's a Ki-Moon?
