- Lucas123, on 12/01/2008, -1/+26An estimated 22 million adults and children were living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa at the end of 2007. During that year, an estimated 1.5 million Africans died from AIDS. The epidemic has left behind some 11.6 million orphaned African children.
Yeah, I'd say it's time to face some facts. - eigenweasel, on 12/02/2008, -0/+18Having spent time in Africa, the sad fact is that a lot of African women and girls don't have much of a choice about whether to have sex or not; rape is omnipresent and sexual abuse by 'authority figures', teachers, police etc. is widespread.
- techrevolution, on 12/02/2008, -1/+18They finally did it...
Because they are hosting 2010 World Cup. That's why. - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+12Their not just sure about it anymore - their HIV positive.
- socialfly, on 12/02/2008, -1/+11The antiretrovrals have come too late for too many people we have known. And they do work - people who have looked as if no hope was left, are now well and strong and back at work.
The problem is getting a strong enough message to the school going children, who are just becoming sexually active. Circumstances (mixed messages, indecisiveness, denial on the part of government) have produced careless attitudes - an answer to condom use is "why eat sweeties with the paper on!" This must be dealt with at grassroots, otherwise this Aids mountain will be impossible to climb! - mypetridish, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9partly due to unchecked western colonization in the 1900s and irresponsibly leaving the continent to rot without making sure they could handle themselves after decades under colonization
Me015.... u spend too much time on the internet. go read some books. - DickyT83, on 12/01/2008, -0/+8It's pretty crazy how some provinces in Africa have AIDS rates of 1 in every 2 yet they still continue to fornicate.
- avataros, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8If they come out fine in the end, they will refer to the last 10 years as the "lost decade." What opportunities lost for a country like RSA - it's a shame.
- Barackalypse, on 12/02/2008, -0/+7Does anyone know the actual economic impact of AIDS in Africa? Considering that they don't have enough jobs or food for the current population, I'm curious if we could waive a wand and cure AIDS forever if it would make any real difference there.
- eigenweasel, on 12/02/2008, -1/+7So how many deaths is Thabo Mbeki responsible for, and when does the prosecution begin?
- 0ptimusMaxiimus, on 12/02/2008, -1/+7silly people South Africa was never in denial, ex-president Thabo Mbeki was in denial those anti-retro viral pills have been available for almost 5yrs now! the only problem we have here is that they are way too expensive for normal people to get but the government is subsidising the cost now. anyway mbeki was in denial to the international community not south africa our politicians have been fighting him for some time now on this issue, but now that he's out of office they let it be known to the rest of the world his policy on HIV went with him! thank God!
- kmcurr, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5It says IN the article that the president himself doubted a connection between HIV and AIDS.
We can't help a country help solve their epidemic crisis if they had continued to deny that it exists. - evertdip, on 12/02/2008, -1/+6I live in a country where men gang rape 3/4 month old babies, thinking that will cure their aids - sex with a virgin. Let me just repeat that, gang rape 3 months and older babies. The current president of the ANC had sex with a HIV positive woman, and afterwards took a shower. WTF was he thinking. Next year is our election and he is gonna be running for president, and stand a good chance of winning.
Now you try an educate the masses. - ChromaVita, on 12/02/2008, -1/+6Which makes you wonder why with statistics like 1 in 2 why you'd even risk it...
- katagana, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6Finally...
- frepnog, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5this would have been REALLY funny if you had correctly used "they're" instead of "their".
- GuacamoleSan, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5But but the african potato....its power is mystical and legendary...
- TimDigg, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4mksmothers/Coolkid11
Do you guys know the history of Western involvement in Africa?
It amazes me how many people have zero understanding of how history impacts the world we live in today. - frepnog, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5Dear African baby dying of AIDS :
I am not real, and people tend to suck.
signed, Bible-God. - linagee, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4How do they know if they have AIDS? We should be sending AIDS test kits and condoms over there. And if you test positive, they give that person a lifetime supply.
- minuslars, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3Unfortunately, the leading denialists of AIDS are David Rasnick, a biochemist, Peter Deusberg, a molecular biologist, and Christine Maggiore, a woman who herself has been infected with HIV but shows no symptoms of AIDS to this day. Her infant daughter, however, succumbed to AIDS, but Maggiore contends that her daughter died of antibiotic allergies.
Rasnick, in particular, works at a foundation in South Africa aimed at propagating AIDS denialism and warning of the risks of antiretroviral therapy. He's probably had more influence than anyone else on Mbeki's position over the course of his tenure as president of South Africa.
Fortunately, Mbeki seems to have come through the fog and is now beginning to see the light. - maroger, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4"And yet for years, Mbeki's government downplayed the extent of the crisis. Mbeki himself doubted the link between HIV and AIDS. His health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang openly mistrusted conventional AIDS drugs and instead promoted the value of lemons, garlic, beetroot and the African potato."
Red herring statement. Anyone who trusts the profit-only-motivated medical industrial complex is an idiot. But anyone who publicly questions the unstable "hiv/aids" theory is labeled and shunned. If the science was fully documented and proven with logical methodology, the medical community would welcome debate. This is pure moneyed corporate censorship.
South Africa was not in "denial"- its leaders posed legitimate questions that have yet to be answered. Mbeki was actually a hero of scientific accountability. Science that bases itself on the faith of an industry is worthless. And the industry frowns on exposing any cracks in its base of self-righteousness and profitability. - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3How many of you have ever heard of Kary Mullis? He won a Nobel Prize for inventing PCR (polymerase chain reaction) which the "HIV test" is based on. Of course, he didn't invent it for that reason.
Here's what he said:
"If there is evidence that HIV causes AIDS, there should be scientific documents which either singly or collectively demonstrate that fact, at least with a high probability. There is no such document." (Sunday Times (London) 28 nov. 1993)
There are thousands of scientists that agree. It was reading about them that convinced Mbeki that poisoning his citizens with AZT and other AIDS drugs was a bad idea. If you're interested, go to www.virusmyth.com to start. - minuslars, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2http://www.pepfar.gov/
- nickespinosa, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2I wonder who started that rumor...
- Zervaman, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2what the ***** is gemocide?
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Being uneducated and poorly informed doesn't make someone genetically inferior.
- TheJimid, on 12/02/2008, -7/+9It's kind of like Bush saying sorry.....same bitter taste but sadly many more lost their lives.
- maroger, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3Funny you bring up the root cause of illness: lack of accessible nutrition and potable water! Call the results of this void anything you want. Trying to blame some "contagious" disease is disingenuous if these other issues are not dealt with. Africa has better access to "hiv/aids" treatment than to nutritious food and drinkable water. What does that tell you about the logic of the scientific community?
- justimaginenot, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3AMANDLA!!!
- diemunkiesdie, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Gang raping wouldn't work, after the first one goes then the baby is no longer a virgin. But I guess if they think a shower clears AIDS then I can;t expect them to figure that out.
Also, ANC= African National Congress.
Edit: Here is the information about Jacob Zuma, that crazy shower guy:
In November 2005, an investigation began into charges that he had raped the 31 year old daughter of a deceased struggle comrade at his home in Forest Town, Johannesburg. Even before charges were filed, the news media reported that the alleged victim was a member of a prominent ANC family and also an AIDS activist; and that Zuma had acknowledged a consensual sexual relationship with the woman in question.
On the morning of 6 December 2005, rape charges against Zuma were formally filed. He vehemently denied the charges, and affirmed his political commitment to oppose sexual violence. The accuser, the young daughter of a deceased friend of Zuma's from during the years of the struggle against apartheid, was known by Zuma to be HIV positive. On 8 May 2006, the Court dismissed the charges, agreeing that the sexual act in question was consensual. During the trial, Zuma admitted to having unprotected sex with his accuser but claimed that he took a shower afterwards to "cut the risk of contracting HIV". Zuma at the time headed the National AIDS Council. This statement has been condemned by the judge, health experts, AIDS activists as well as ridiculed by the public in general. The popular South African comic strip, Madam & Eve, and well known political cartoonist, Zapiro, have repeatedly lampooned the matter.

- Spartacusprime, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Curing AIDS won't make a difference beyond lowering the mortality rate. Africa has been ***** since the colonial days.
- dustbowl, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3Isn't AIDS really the doing of witch craft?
Oh wait, this is 2008 and we live in the of times of things like the Internets, modern transportation and roads.
Time to wake up and smell the coffee. Retards. - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -2/+4Science and verified data continuing to drag the slaughter of logic and reason of Religion though the mud...
Dear Bible-God,
Why do 24000 people die EVERY DAY from hunger or hunger-related causes! 75% of them being children?
Why did 9.2m children aged under five died of malnutrition and AIDS across the world last year?
Why do 800 million people not have enough food to eat at this very moment even in this modern age? (Remember America is only 280 million people, so you do the math)
Why do 5700 Africans die each day of Aids!!
We have you given us Cancer, Aids, Polio, Yellow Fever, Influenza, Spanish Flu, Measles that wiped out billions and continues to do so?!
Signed,
-an African baby dying of AIDS - maroger, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2You've almost revealed the real answer!
- mabba18, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3Dear African baby dying of AIDS :
Why did your parents even have you if your life would be so horrible, and they don't have the resources to feed and care for you?
Signed,
-a person who wonders why people can't stop *****. - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2This is a totally new idea to most people.
- kmcurr, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1I was trying to say that because the president chose to deny it's existence, countries were not able to help due to the fact that he controls exactly HOW MUCH help can be provided.
- 0ptimusMaxiimus, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1you fool i live in this country, we have been fighting mbeki's policies for years people dont deny aids exists we know all to well that it does, it was mbeki and his cabinet that chose too deny it and who chose too limit the options of so many of us south africans if it were not for him help could have come a alot sooner!
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2Maybe the same reason you're so anti-capital letters.
- rsHoratio, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2And here I thought Iran was slow on the uptake...
- pintomp3, on 12/02/2008, -2/+3aids denialism, global warming denialism, evolution denialism. why are people so anti-science?
- TheMandibleClaw, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1don't forget the garlic and beetroot ....
- saegiru, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1waitaminute! Babies can't write! BABIES CAN'T WRITE!
- Zidave, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1Great news, lets hope they continue their awareness and take further action in helping the victims. Come the 2010 World Cup their economy should get a boost. Lets hope that it is seen as an opportunity to use some of that money in the fight against AIDS.
- Icetype, on 12/02/2008, -2/+2You didn't go where I was expecting with the "give a man a fish" thing, but yeah, that's a good point.
- SirFlatulence, on 12/03/2008, -0/+0I don't think people realize just how hard mbeki tried to prevent any fight against aids. I had a friend who was a doctor in a state hospital several years ago who was fired for prescribing ARV's to an HIV positive person.
