- Surferess, on 08/08/2008, -5/+210That is messed up! If they killed my dogs I wouldn't be so calm.
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -19/+172***** the Police!
- rewinn, on 08/09/2008, -4/+144The militarization of our police leads to many deaths, no reduction in actual crime. But the lure of the free money and equipment for more, more, more SWAT teams is hard to resist.
- julielynn1009, on 08/09/2008, -5/+139Naturally, being a pet lover, this is a disturbing story, but I was glad to see him admit that although this is happening to other people, his position as a public servant gives him some power to pursue this. Sadly, that is what it takes these days to get anything done. I don't even care if the delivery was legitimate or not - they didn't have a search warrant, shot first and asked questions later - what is this Nazi Germany?
- VKMO, on 08/09/2008, -2/+109I don't care what the cops or their apologists say -- there is NO excuse for shooting dogs that aren't attacking you and, in fact, are running away from you.
Putting on a badge and calling it a "drug raid" doesn't change the fact that they are slaughtering family pets for no good reason. - inactive, on 08/09/2008, -3/+88Pigs, thats what we called them 35 years ago.
- Lynx55, on 08/09/2008, -2/+75Small town or small county sheriff's and detectives are always looking for a way to advance themselves. What better than busting the mayor?? I was a state trooper, and I knew MANY of those small county sheriff depts. Talk about 'good old boys club" , and imagine me, one of the first four female state troopers in the state. I experienced it more than all the men. I would be my bottom dollar, this is the same type of sheriff dept.
But sadly, all I can think of is the dogs...and how the family has to go on without them. It is legal in our state anyway, for dogs to attack anyone who enters a private home without consent. Hell my little pooch would. Shoot him and I'd be looking for my gun. *****. - Foenetik, on 08/09/2008, -2/+74this same thing happened to a friend of mine a few years back. no knock warrant, trigger happy pigs, nonviolent dog who had just given birth earlier that month and was totally non-confrontational and actually ran away from the cops - check. worst part was that one of the cops was overheard at a bar later that week and was actually bragging about shooting my friends dog. scumbags
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -2/+66it was NOT a no-knock warrant.
if it had been anyone but a politician, this wouldn't even be in the news.
and it sure does seem like a lot of people care more about these dogs than people who get shot and killed for no reason in these ***** little operations, every single day.
yet another fine example of what a worthless piece of ***** this drug war is. - eweaver99, on 08/09/2008, -1/+54Interactive map of botched swat raids:
http://www.cato.org/raidmap/ - larryjr88, on 08/09/2008, -0/+50Every pot raid is 'botched.'
Stop wasting time and go catch some criminals. - alapoet, on 08/09/2008, -1/+44YouTube doesn't refresh view count with every few, but rather every few minutes.
Digg refreshes digg count with each digg. - rewinn, on 08/09/2008, -1/+44RTFA. They were completely innocent and BTW the cops had no warrant. It was an illegal raid. A rational policy would've been to use no unnecessary force.
- sweetwater88, on 08/09/2008, -1/+38Here in NC the police illegally raided our house about 3-5 years ago and pointed their guns at my mother and sister for--get this: MY FAMILY'S LASTS NAME MATCHES A KNOWN DRUG DEALER. That is why they pointed guns at my family; because of our last name. I'm pretty sure our last name isn't unique and they also took around $210 in grocery money. I think my dad got some people reprimanded and fired for this incident.
- yosserhughes, on 08/09/2008, -1/+36Is it just me, or have you noticed that since 9/11 all people in supposed positions of authority have a completely different attitude towards the public now?
From the cop on the beat to the security guard at the local shopping mall, to the airline screener; they've all developed this don't-*****-with-me-I'm-saving-you-from-terrorists look in their eyes. Any dissent or hesitation on your part to not do exactly and immediately as you're told will lead to you being arrested, tasered, strip searched, pepper-sprayed, thrown in jail, or even killed.
If you protest your treatment, you're an enemy of the state and you'll get; "we're only doing this for your own good sir, national security dontchaknow, can't take any chances after 9/11 now can we'.
WTF happened to America? - l800LEMMINGS, on 08/09/2008, -1/+36yeah I'm surprised how well the mayor carried himself so calm and professional and not calling attention to what they did to him personally as much as what they do to the community as a whole
- benoitcsirois, on 08/09/2008, -7/+42PETA won't like this!
- tvanwyk, on 08/09/2008, -10/+45There's an odd feel of poetic justice in one group of thugs with guns killing the dogs of a politician.
Poor dogs. - illinoise89, on 08/09/2008, -1/+35You obviously don't have dogs.
- alapoet, on 08/09/2008, -2/+34Yeah, Crackerpat, I tell you, those dogs are really dangerous when they're running away from you as fast as they can.
And, of course, mayors and their live-in mothers-in-law are usually heavily armed and dangerous gangstas, too.
/heavy sarcasm - RoflCoptah, on 08/09/2008, -0/+30atleast he's the mayor and has SOME power to prosecute the police. If this was just a regular citizen, i doubt they would be able to do anything about it
- jcaino, on 08/09/2008, -0/+29As the Mayor, I'd definitely be pulling strings to get the guys that shot my dog ***** canned. Just for starters. I love my dog.
- rmmcclay, on 08/09/2008, -0/+29One of the important things the mayor said during the interview was that this was happening to other people who didn't have the credentials he did as a mayor and therefore would not be able to get their story out or their names cleared.
- sx66gns, on 08/09/2008, -0/+28I like you.
- sheetrock, on 08/09/2008, -1/+29Would it have bothered you more if they shot somebody in the house because they were holding a remote control?
Because the way this was conducted, it could just as easily have been a person that got shot. And it wasn't like this was a suspected gang house or something where there might possibly have been a reason to go in no-knock and guns drawn. No, it could have been somebody's grandmother.

Unless somebody chokes on it or gets hit on the head with it just right, 32 lbs of marijuana isn't going to kill anybody. Maybe, and I don't want to go too far out on a limb here, but just maybe this type of tactic is something of an overreaction to the problem. And perhaps, and I don't want to seem too much of a liberal here, perhaps it, I don't know, creates a far larger danger to innocent people than the problem it purports to solve.
And innocent dogs as well, apparently. - oxdeltaxo, on 08/09/2008, -0/+28Why is it policy for the police to shoot any dog, whether or not it's aggressive, if it's just lying there or running away? I could understand if it bit someone or if it was growling or barking, but if it was just chillin, then why?
- lennybird, on 08/09/2008, -1/+28Okay, these SWAT guys are trained in deadly force with automatic weapons, are taught to instantly and instinctively discern friend or foe humans, yet they can't ***** control their trigger finger on ***** dogs?
Sounds like some rednecks were eager to shoot something. - celebfan0712, on 08/09/2008, -3/+29This is hideous. Activists are gonig to have a field day with this story.
- Oea420, on 08/09/2008, -1/+27What!!!!!!!!! I would NOT be as calm as this man! I would be hungering for blood!
I love my dogs, if any scumbag cop EVER did something like this, I'd be so raging mad.... i wouldn't know what to do with myself
i applaud the guy for keeping his composure and looking into it the right ways - sheetrock, on 08/09/2008, -0/+26http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/politics/ba ...
With some irrelevant exceptions, packages that are sent to you through the mail or other delivery services get left outside your door. Apparently a couple of people decided it'd be smart to move over 400 lbs this way, across several packages that were sent to different (unsuspecting) locations. If the deliveries happen earlier in the day than the residents get home, then the traffickers can drive by each location and pick up the package without anybody being the wiser.
The problem with this scheme is that packages are routinely checked for drugs and the police notified when they are found. It doesn't seem to stop people from trying to send them this way from time to time. - pstroll, on 08/09/2008, -2/+27Dogs are useless against a SWAT raid. I keep a hornets nest in the living room for protection
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -2/+27tragic, I feel for the Calvos
- Echota, on 01/05/2009, -1/+26Both dogs ran and the police ran after them and shot them!
The police don't have a big enough excuse for anything they did this day! - laserdog, on 08/09/2008, -0/+22This is the same way Ruby Ridge started.
ATF members sneak up to a house, throw a rock at it to see if their dogs would notice.
The dogs did notice, as well as their young master.
ATF then shoots the dog, young kid with gun reacts predictably to his dogs being shot infront of him, and is then shot in the back running back towards the house. - nocash23, on 08/09/2008, -0/+22if you kill a cop dog you are tried as if you killed an officer. shouldnt cops be held to the same degree (as if they shot a civilian)?
- lucy22, on 08/09/2008, -4/+26Killing someones dogs over botched raid. Just sick. What about tasers. Couldn't they have stunned the dog or tranquilizer darts. I hate to see any animal killed so needlessly.
- Jedakiah, on 08/09/2008, -2/+22Police are cat people.
- ChayesFSS, on 08/09/2008, -4/+24SWAT ~= Nazi SS
Brainless enforcers of a police state - sonycam, on 08/09/2008, -0/+17Which is why it was most likely sealed in a container to prevent arousing any suspicion throughout the postal process? Noone would send 32lbs of mairjuana in just a cardboard box.
- ErickStevenson, on 08/09/2008, -0/+17Wow the fact that they didn't have a warrant for a no-knock entry and they still did it... nicely done, and they shot the dogs.
Police state rocks! This country is getting better and better... we won the war on terrorists ya'll.... - electrikyle, on 08/09/2008, -1/+17I am so sick of all the people with badges who do not do their jobs right.. I have been harassed by too many cops for no reason, been threatened to be taken to jail when i was doing absolutely nothing other than standing somewhere.. WE HAVE RIGHTS!! Cops should not incite fear in anyone except for people who are endangering others, but so many of them abuse their badge because of their bitter position.
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -0/+16It seems like it's some sort of unspoken policy for raids these days too.
I've read a lot of articles about raids, and about half the time they mention that they shot dogs. - EverTheCynic, on 08/09/2008, -3/+19I find it somewhat hard to believe that you would succeed at beating a SWAT team to within an inch of their lives.
- ReidFleming, on 08/09/2008, -3/+18Why? Because they didn't get the chance to kill some more animals? http://www.petakillsanimals.com/
- TEMM, on 08/09/2008, -2/+17A) They arent just dogs, they are members of that family.
B) It could have just as easily been people that were shot. Its happened before in botched raids. - urgeigh, on 08/09/2008, -6/+19I'd like to hear more about the 32 lbs. of pot. Why OH WHY would someone send 32 POUNDS (That is a royal *****-ton of weed for those of you who don't know) to someone knowing they are going to lose it, even if they were just trying to ***** with the Mayor or something, 1-5 lbs. would probably do the trick, but 32? That might have been a failed set-up by some city cops. Something smells in this story, aside from the ***** pigs of course.
- harrisbradley, on 08/09/2008, -0/+13The only thing about pot that ruins lives is the government.
- peestandingup, on 08/09/2008, -2/+15If someone just up & shot my dogs like that, nomatter who it was, I honestly dont know if I could control myself. I can tell you one thing, they would regret it because I'd probably beat them within an inch of their life.
- bigcynic, on 08/09/2008, -2/+15This is why the fascist right will fight tooth-and-nail to keep weed illegal - it's too good an excuse for framing and harassing and jailing people.
- Tyrghast, on 08/10/2008, -0/+12The worst part is THIS EVEN ISN'T ABOUT THE DOGS!!! They knew the box contained marijuana, and rather than following procedure and stopping the package once they found out it's contents, they let the package continue to the house. They then carried out an illegal search and seizure in a violent manner. What should have happened is that the package be confiscated, a sherriff or detective dispatched to see if the suspects could be interviewed in a calm and efficient manner, etc. etc.
From the get-go there was no need for violence. -
