- tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -0/+66This is how world leaders play 'who's got the biggest dick' with each other. Meanwhile, citizens of the world wonder why we can't just live life without this crap.
- t3hp0d, on 10/10/2007, -6/+61I blame Harry Potter. This is exactly what happens when you give a House Elf some clothing, they go mad with power.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=IrhKPog7o8k - vault, on 10/10/2007, -5/+43The scary part is how popular Putin is in Russia...
- Albionshores, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39Sounds more like an antique air show to me. Seriously though, I think it is more a case of Russia saying, "is this where we want to go back to?" after relations recently deteriorated between the two. Putin obviously longs to return to a KGB way of running things (called FSB now) but I don't think he really wants to alienate the EU state which, lets face it, Brown is going to sign the UK into without a referendum - probably on some rainy Friday night when nobody is paying attention.
- atdigg, on 10/10/2007, -6/+40"cold war" this looks more like cold play, no sane person believes Russians are going to bomb UK so this is actually only a silly Bear ballet.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -8/+41We should put Putin and Bush in a fight-to-the-death match and then execute the winner.
- Kyrgizion, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30You ARE aware that you can visit the news sections you're interested in without having to see the cat videos and iPod colours?
- tuxerware, on 10/10/2007, -6/+34Bush has been treating Russia like *****, the proposed missile shield is a perfect example. Put a missile shield in the Czech republic to protect against missiles from Iran???? I know Bush doesn't know his geography but he could ask someone for a map at least. Stop treating Russia as a third world nation and a lot of the tensions would disappear.
- protogenxl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26At the UN Building in New York City, a meeting of nations is in progress.
Russian official: The Soviet Union will be pleased to offer amnesty to your wayward wessel.
American official: The Soviet Union? I thought you guys broke up.
Russian official: Yes, that's what we wanted you to think! [laughs] -- "Simpson Tide"
./Obligitory Simpsons Quote - simg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23This story is totally misleading. The Russian bombers were flying in international airspace and conducting a training flight. The British fighters were scrambled as a matter of routine.

I wonder if World War 3 will eventually be started by the press hyping up stuff like this just so they sell more advertising in their newspapers ? - gavinmusic, on 10/10/2007, -7/+28Yes, and we all know Coldplay sucks.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24Is this simply muscle flexing? Or just testing RAF response times?
- iandigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14or at least the Russian media which he controls tells us he's popular. He's recently banned BBC over there too
- thebusiness, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Right because it's not like the Royal Air Force has exercised scrambling against enemy bombers flying towards their airspace for as long as it's been in existance. That's a little different than trying to find civilian planes which are already in your airspace. Traditionally military threats don't come from within.
- grantmoore3d, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16I bet Putin would win, Bush is a pussy without his armada of security workers.
- swanny89, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18I'd say more like Hitler: restore nation to former glory after the loss of a war (yes it wasn't a real war but the USSR still lost politically) and severe economic swings.
- duke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Yeah, Putin is ex-KGB, while Bush couldn't even pull his panties up long enough to stay in the National Guard without going AWOL
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11What the hell is wrong with bread and vodka for every meal? It works for me...
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11MUST. CRUSH. CAPITALISM!!!
- allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16Agreed. He's seen a lot like George Bush is in certain parts of the US. But smarter.
I mean that not as a dig at Bush, but more of an observation of Putin. - Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18Someone needs to alert you to the differences between True/British english and your bastardised Americanisation of the language.
I say again, wtf is Aluminum? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Except both countries are starving. Their food resources are too low to sustain a war for anything more than 30 days or so before their troops begin to desert.
That actually scares me more because in order for China or Russia to 'win' any World War they would HAVE to use nukes. And we all know who really wins once that happens - no one. - stolenisotope1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10In our age of Globalisation, noting can stop a world war affecting you, even if you live in the middle of nowhere.
- vroom101, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13It's serious and it's a dangerous game that can quickly get out of control. We're watching -- incredibly in the 21st century when war-filled 20th century is still a fresh memory -- the opening moves of "Cold War II: Russia vs ????".
- 118118, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Looks like Bush has some competition for the position of global warlord *****...
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10No way- they just declared the North Pole as Russia. Why stop there??
- Adelhas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Lets keep in mind that these stories are slightly overplayed. "Warned off by UK jets" doesnt mean the Russians were doing anything wrong. They were in international airspace. They were simply "warned" that they were approaching UK airspace and to turn around, which they did. This isnt a big deal. The IDF jets in Syrian airspace yesterday was actually pushing their luck quite a bit more.
- legendxx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11digg used to be about tech stuff.. now it's about ron paul and fox news

Considering that Putin is quite experienced in Judo:

I'm afraid President Bush would get owned before he could say "ass whoopin'" - Rustbelt, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Don't make excuses for Putin being an ass. Provocative bomber flights have everything to do with him trying to show Russia still has power or some BS and nothing to do with that ridiculous missile shield. Hell, they could have the shield technology if they want it. It's been offered to them with no strings attached.
- ConorT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Have you tried going mad without power, its not fun at all, no one listens to you!
- rabidbob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Actually the tax payers are wondering why the ***** their money is being wasted on this ***** when the NHS in the UK is a ***** shambles and schools in Russia are desperately under funded. Get these ***** out of office and replace them with someone who's got some basic fiscal sense and social responsibility.
- ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11those Eurofighter Typhoons look awesome...
- SenorCardgage74, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11You know how I know Russia's gay?........
- CiXeL, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11the smell of WWIII is in the air. this isnt pretty.
- sabach, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10It was originally called alumium, but by 1812 the spelling aluminum was settled on by the discoverer. However the spelling aluminium was proposed around the same time and caught on. The American spelling came back in the 1890's. Canadians say aluminum and Australians say aluminium. And for the record, most midwestern Americans say things the way they're spelled. Come on, you guys pronounce saw "sore".
- tk0680, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8That is the dumbest comment I've read on digg, bar none.
- ZenFountain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Putin was like a little school girl when oil was $30 / barrel, double the price and all of sudden Russia is back in business with windfall oil revenue. If we were not addicted to oil all these problems with Russia, Venezuela and Iran would simply go away because they would be broke and we would be strong. If we truly felt those nations were our enemy we would have a Manhattan size project to develop domestic energy and mandatory conservation on all levels.
- saeglopur, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It's probably some kind of viral marketing for World in Conflict...
- R2Bacca, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Dugg for the antique air show part...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Yes, you keep your Queen's English and we Americans will keep our dentists.
- BrightonBreezy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The problem is that each one of these aircraft can carry a dozen or more nuclear-tipped cruise missiles with a range of several hundred miles. It doesn't need to be any where near British airspace to be a very real threat.
The "Bear" may look like an antique but it's simple and cheap to maintain, carries a devastating payload and Russia has hundreds of them.
Sure, a modern fighter could blow it out of the sky in a eye-blink but it would still have to reach it before it got within cruise missile range. - benguild, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Haha, grand.
- holzp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Putin touched shoes with him in the bathroom of the UN.
- migitalwarfare, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6when it makes perfect sense to divert whatever money you have to improving your country, rather than destroying another, capitalism has nothing to do with it. i think that's called common sense
- Arcesius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm guessing Putin represents most Russians' feelings as much as Shrub represents most Americans'. Seriously, who the ***** wants another cold war?
- tehperil, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Just willy-waving and nothing more - Putin is behaving with bad manners but no way will it ever be anything more
- Kyrgizion, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I'll get concerned when China (long-standing Russian partner "in crime") joins them. Modern day Russia is hardly a threat, despite their vast amount of nukes, but combined with China...
