barentsobserver.com — The Russian aircraft carrier “Admiral Kuznetsov” is ready to head from Murmansk towards the Mediterranean and the Syrian port of Tartus. The mission comes after Syrian President Bashar Assad said he is open for a Russian base in the area.

- Fangsinmybeard, on 08/21/2008, -0/+16Watch out for Israeli gun boats and jets. They'll pick a fight with anyone now.
- FrankHope, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9... and submarines. Israel has quietly built one of the most power militaries in the world. All funded by the US taxpayer.
- RightHand, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Na, they only pick on lightly defended warships like USS Liberty, but it could be WW3 time again like then.
- DefenceMinister, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1They wouldn't dare to mess with the Russians.
- FrankHope, on 08/21/2008, -0/+19This little article is a gem. I had no idea that Russia has only one aircraft carrier. I also had not heard that Syria has talked about a Russian base.
The effect of the diplomatic and economic pressure being placed on Iran, and now Russia, is to create an alliance between these two countries. Surely this cannot be good for American interests. Syria has also been threatened by the US and Israel. Israeli warplanes attacked Syria recently in a strike against a supposed nuclear site. What if Russian and Israeli fighter planes engaged in conflict?
All this could be avoided if Israel would stop attacking its neighbors. The coming war with Iran is purely a result of a campaign by the Zionists that have pressured the US to act through AIPAC. Republican or Democrat, it doesn't make any difference - both parties exist to serve the interests of the Jewish State.- pjkundert, on 08/21/2008, -5/+1Ah, yes. If only those damn Juden would lie down and die when told to by their Salaam-loving neighbours... Then, people of every nation and faith could come and worship freely at Jerusalem, the new capital of dar al Islam! Right?
- MarkEarhart, on 08/21/2008, -0/+18The best foreign policy for America is one we have heard a lot of in the last year. "Commerce with all nations, entangling alliances with none." We should learn to stay at home and mind our own business.
- RightHand, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3.. and the entanglement with Israel is called what? Embarrassing our allies ...LBJ.
- yellowcakewalk, on 08/21/2008, -0/+2Your apt quote from Jefferson sent me looking for the exact words:
"Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations--entangling alliances with none, I deem [one of] the essential principles of our government, and consequently [one of] those which ought to shape its administration." --Thomas Jefferson: 1st Inaugural Address, 1801. ME 3:321

- Catspaw, on 08/21/2008, -0/+12MarkEarhart you say "WE" should learn to stay at home and mind our own business.
It is not the Americans who are behind this. It is a gaggle of elites who think they have the right to rule over humanity, because they have the misfortune to be inbred psychopaths.- RightHand, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1Yes, we non-Americans, in the main know this. But it is your democratic system in whose name these things are done so you cannot wash your hands entirely. Yes, even us white-english-speakers have some responsibility as we'll get it in the neck first and not you.
- RightHand, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1. addition.
Sorry, I've just checked. You are one of us, the white-english-speaking non-Americans just wanting a peaceful world. It should have been obvious. Greeting, 'All-Black' from the Emerald Isle. - yellowcakewalk, on 08/21/2008, -0/+2The "we" I think was meant as shorthand for the gaggle of elites you speak of. It's easy for us to trip over the language.
- Waiting2awake, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1True, and with respect; what have you done to stop them? See, if anyone other than American people try to do anything about it - it is called war. You, are sanities only hope. As scary as that it, but many of us still have hope for you. Stop these people. Are they acting in your best interest? If you do not like what they are doing, let them know - loudly. Let it be known so loud that not even the MSM can silence it.
Americans are better than this.
- Kizilbash, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9I was in Tartus in 1990, in the last days of the Soviet Union. There were certainly a lot of Russian sailors around at the time. Tartus was a supply base for Soviet ships then I think.
- peacepower, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4This could be a good thing if it makes the US think more cautiously about its actions in the Middle East. On the other hand, our delusional leaders have not yet realized that our country is past its prime. Bush, McCain, and even Obama have an unrealistic estimation of US military and economic power. We can only pray that they will do the wise thing and back off.
