What has really hurt Iran is their mismanagement of their government and economy.
They have double digit inflation and unemployment. They have gas rationing.
Their northern military base was attacked by some Kurds who nearly wiped out the whole installation leading to the top guy in their military being replaced.
They still have trouble keeping their planes in the air. If they were to be engaged in a conventional war they would not have enough fuel to wage it for very long.
Their disaster preparedness makes F.E.M.A. look like professionals.
Adding sanctions will change things in Iran the same way they changed things in Iraq. - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6That is provided that the internal unrest in Iran does not move toward destruction of the facilities and pipelines. We have seen in the Southern region of Iran a considerable amount of unrest among the Arabs and we know what happens next if it becomes more unstable.
- thotpoizn, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5I think this is just leverage / justification for the Russians to continue their endless stalling and delays regarding the promised delivery of nuclear fuels - remember, they have long standing agreements to assist Iran's nuclear program. The only hitch in that plan is, they are no more interested in a nuclear *armed* Iran than we are. Hence, these sanctions will no doubt boil down to just another excuse to stall handing over nuclear materials, while their oil and natural gas deals will continue and even increase more or less unabated...
