- Hangly, on 08/28/2008, -20/+331WTF, the US Coast Guard is in Georgia? Will someone please send a map to Washington DC clearly indicating where the coastal areas of the US are?
- EvilFerret, on 08/28/2008, -2/+225Finally. I'm sick of WW2 games.
- Hangly, on 08/28/2008, -4/+219Never get involved in a land war in Asia.
- voze, on 08/28/2008, -23/+235Christ, here comes ww3
- duggedup, on 08/27/2008, -76/+282I think Russia is making a stand, sensing a tipping point in relations with the West. Bush has pushed them too far and they are about to push back. They are using the flux of the American elections to make their move
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -6/+185So much for the diplomatic double talk. The Russians have drawn a line in the sand.
- doctorfungi, on 08/28/2008, -30/+191No, it's got nothing to do with Bush pushing them. As much as you love to blame Bush for absolutely everything, he hasn't "pushed" Russia into this.
Russia is flexing its muscles as much as it can while the United States is in Iraq. Now that the conflict there is drawing to an end, meaning more US forces will be available soon, Russia has to assert itself as much as it can before this happens.
In terms of a long term forecast, the United States will remain the world super power for quite a while longer (in terms of military at least). Russia's trying to grasp some leverage in the short term to compensate.
They're trying to get back up there with the US as a hegemonic power and are resorting to rhetoric over Georgia to try and scare the West.
Most analysts will tell you that the situation will defuse with Russia slighter higher on the global ranks for now. Nothing more will come out of it, for now anyway. Putin would be stupid to try and engage the West at this current point in time. - peacepower, on 08/28/2008, -39/+154If Bush is trying to go down in history as the president who started the most senseless conflicts at one time, he will succeed. Congress is sitting there like a bunch of dummies, saying nothing (except for Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, and a handful of others). No declaration of war by the Congress on any of these, as required by law! By the time Congress decides if they want to impeach him, Bush will have WW 3 going and he'll be out of office, residing on his ranch in Paraguay.
Our managed press has been framing this conflict with Georgia as Russia's fault, when it was Georgia that attacked South Ossetia first.
What are we even doing supporting some tinpot dictator in Georgia, who's starting trouble with a major nuclear power and trying to get us involved? This is insane that we have been working behind the scenes to get this fool into NATO so that we will be drawn into a war with Russia on his account! Once again, it's mostly about getting oil to feed our addiction. - Siegfriedson, on 08/28/2008, -17/+121Yes, we Americans would be up in arms if the Russian navy were in the Gulf of Mexico, giving arms and supplies to Mexican separatists in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico (i.e., Aztlan).
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -26/+121Personally, I don't like where this is heading, but it's about time someone told the US to sit the *&%$ down and mind their own business. If it wasn't for the American/CIA trained troops in Georgia that lead the attack in the first place, none of this would be happening.
- BowieX, on 08/28/2008, -3/+85Huh? There was a Waterworld 2?
- SRSco, on 08/28/2008, -59/+136I can't believe how naive and blinded Diggers are by their own self-loathing of the United States (or loathing by non-American Diggers).
Let's get this straight.
1) Chechnya/Kosovo happened.
2) Russians gave passports to Abkhazes and Ossetians.
3) Russia moved a large army to the Russo-Georgian border.
4) Ossetian separatists attack Georgian peacekeepers/police.
5) Georgia responds.
5) Russia decides to not try to broker a ceasefire with their already existing diplomats and peacekeepers that Georgia has already agreed to have in Georgia, but rather...
6) Russia invades Georgia.
7) Russia refuses to pull out of Georgia after they agree to.
8) Russia declares parts of another sovereign nation independent.
9) Russia threatens war with any Georgian ally.
You see who is banging the drums of war here? And you people STILL blame the United States? - aspec, on 08/28/2008, -4/+68But only slightly less well-known is this: Never get involved with a Sicilian when DEATH IS ON THE LINE!
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -21/+84This is not the old Soviet Union we are dealing with. Times have changed. So should our policies.
The Russians have been cooperating economically and diplomatically. They have been trying for years to get into the WTO but have been blocked by objections from Georgia who is already a member of the WTO. Even China is a member of the WTO. Russia and the US have been working together on the International Space Station. That never happened under the old USSR.
The main reason the Neocons are going after Russia is because they are pissed that Putin locked up their fellow Zionists, the Oligarchs, which had gained control of the Russian Oil through crooked deals under Yeltsin. Are we going to let the Neocons run this country into the ground? - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -20/+81You are talking to pot hazed digtards living in their parents basement witha computer, no education, no worldly travel, no common sense, and are all bound by a distrust of authority that makes their pitiful lives worth living but are not smart enough to be able to figure that out.
- Zeonii, on 08/28/2008, -3/+62Its fine.... this happens in COD4. It turns out fine.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+58The Coast Guard had the largest loss of life proportionally than any other branch of the military during WW1. Not a largely known fact, but true.
"The Coast Guard in World War I by Alex R. Larzelere"
http://www.amazon.com/Coast-Guard-World-War-Untold ... - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -15/+70Now let's switch it around!
Ok, let's say Russia drops off 10,000 anti-aircraft missiles to the Iraqi insurgents to fight the War against the U.S.?
Is that a declaration of war? - franklymister, on 08/28/2008, -9/+62I guess this is about the time McCain is supposed to say "bring it on," right?
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -9/+61BINGO!
Best and only accurate comment I've read about this on Digg.
It didn't take them 18 years to do something about the conflict for nothing.
I think this will end with real peacekeepers (UN peacekeepers). Russia can't do ***** to peacekeepers. If they do, they get international condemnation, again.
We're talking about a tiny piece of land with 70k people. This isn't a major conflict, Russia's in it for the attention it gets, "defying" the West. - Hangly, on 08/28/2008, -5/+53For one, Georgia completely straddles the landmass between the Black and Caspian seas. For that reason it's an extremely strategic location for Russia. Another reason is that it is the main route between the oil fields of Azerbaijan and ports on the Black Sea. The US has several pipelines crossing Georgia from East to West.
A third reason is Georgia's proximity to Iran, which I have long suspected is the real reason the US is so interested in it. I don't think it's an accident that this is happening now, just as the US is moving into position to strike Iran. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -16/+63Russia can kick some ass... why would we need to push them? What is to gain?
- ImperialRome, on 08/28/2008, -0/+47It might surprise you, but the Coast Guard is also off the coast of Somalia. Drug interdiction, anti-piracy, and cargo security are all being handled overseas by the Coasties.
Its practically a second Navy. - atdigg, on 08/28/2008, -3/+50Or... Cuba? Remember?
- Vesci, on 08/28/2008, -0/+44and the cold war games suck, all you do is look at each other until a third party comes in and helps broker peace.
- Warptaco, on 08/28/2008, -10/+53All people who "understand Russia" should understand that Russia helped to kick out 230 000 - 250 000 Georgians out of Abkhazia back in early nineties and killed tens of thousands of them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_cleansing_of_G ...
That is why Georgians are a little bit reluctant to give Abkhazia away. Since if there had never been ethnic cleansing of Georgians there it would clearly be Georgian territory. - roosevans, on 08/28/2008, -33/+74All that has transpired in Georgia, South Ossetia and Poland is in Russia's vital interests and/or security, as I see it. It is the West, particularly the Bush Administration that is acting imperialistically.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -1/+40with a really big stick.
- richmomz, on 08/28/2008, -15/+51Bush: We're stuck in Iraq and Afghanistan, trashed the housing market, started a major financial crisis, tripled the price of gas, food, healthcare, and college education, shredded our civil liberties so we can spy on our own people... Dick, we've accomplished so much but we've got so little time left. What can we do to complete this picture?
Dick: I know! Let's start ***** with Russia!!! - BobScratchit, on 08/28/2008, -3/+39I work with nuclear defense computers in the AF and I'm getting a kick out of this thread.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -12/+47after doing some research about who's is charge of this mess, I found a really good video about the connections between Israel and the US. Bush will be the blame because he is the head of the iceberg so to speak but did you know that the only nation allowed to hold Dual Nationalities and vote in other countries in the US are Israeli's. Once you have an American passport you are not allowed to vote in another country or serve in another country's war otherwise you will have you citizenship revoked, but Israeli's are the only ones allowed to do this? Also have you seen how many Dual National Israeli's are in the top level of the US GOV, have a look at BUSH's top advisers (there are about 4 or more). Secondly, if you hold a Dual Nationality, you are not allow to hold a position of power/influence in the US gov. but this is not so for Israeli's. weird don't you think?
So this raises the question about why the US would provoke a war with Russia? Russia supports Iran and Israel hates Iran. So the US, directed by the "inside mob", starts a proxy war to tie up Russia, Israel wins by tying up Iran's allies but also allows the US to sign off on the missile bases in Poland.
It's not really about oil, there's more to it than that. - Wonderama, on 08/28/2008, -5/+39There will be no war. Russia is a capitalist economy with too many ties to Western Europe and the US now. For example, Russia is one of the largest holders of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac notes.
It's bad business to kill your customers and suppliers. - JagPop, on 08/28/2008, -10/+43Now this is REALLY scary stuff. Holy Smokes!
- RAGEdemon, on 08/28/2008, -23/+55Wow, I can't quite believe the mount of hypocrisy I am seeing here.
Russia didn't start the war. The other side killed 1500 civilians by means such as bombarding a densely populated area with very crude and inaccurate artillery. Including Russian Civilians and peace keepers.
After so many warnings from Russia to stop doing it, Russia moves in to put an end to it.
Very soon after it does.
This is what Actually happened. Research it instead of regurgitating everything that comes out of MSM.
Regarding the declaration of war:
When America was invading Iraq and Afghanistan, and Russia gave them militery help, would this not be seen as a declaration of war?
So why so surprised when they do it to you?
So much hypocisy by the west. Actually, it sums up the world quite nicely.
The west ***** with other countries, killing peoples children, their husbands and wives, their brothers and sisters. And when they do things like smash planes into the wests buildings in retaliation, the west doesn't understand why they would do such a thing as it was unprovoked, right? Then you go invading other countries and killing more civilians. And then more "terrorist attacks" Wow, didn't see that coming!
Do you think you are better than others in the world? Do you think the term "American Citizen" is something special?
America is a nation of under 300 million people compared to the rest of the world with a 6000 million population.
Wake up and get your heads out of your asses. - richmomz, on 08/28/2008, -1/+33INCONCEIVABLE!

- DearSergio, on 08/28/2008, -1/+32You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
- feeldarhythme, on 08/28/2008, -7/+37Who the ***** is USA to tell other countries what to do after they invaded Iraq and Afghanistan and bombed Belgrade?
- franklymister, on 08/28/2008, -3/+33Hey Joey Tribiani - it's a "moot" point, not a "mute" point.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -5/+35Top military figure Colonel General Leonid Ivashov, president of the Academy of Geopolitical Studies in Moscow, alleged that the US and NATO had been arming Georgia as a dress rehearsal for a future military operation in Iran.
"We are close to a serious conflict - U.S. and NATO preparations on a strategic scale are ongoing. In the operation the West conducted on Georgian soil against Russia - South Ossetians were the victims or hostages of it - we can see a rehearsal for an attack on Iran."
He claimed Washington was fine tuning a new type of warfare and that the threat of an attack on Iran was growing by the day bringing "chaos and instability" in its wake. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -3/+32Why, because apparently 99% of all diggers are idiots?
- SRSco, on 08/28/2008, -2/+28The first two points are common knowledge. Read more about the lead up to the conflict here:
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/af25400a-739d-11dd-8a66- ...
And don't give me that "western propaganda argument". I'm not giving Georgia a free pass, they acted stupidly, but that doesn't mean Russia is off the hook. Russia has acted completely unilaterally with practically zero international support for their actions (aside from Diggers). Georgia shouldn't've done what they did, but that doesn't give excuses for Russia to act the way they are. How people make the jump to blame the United States is beyond me. - kemp34, on 08/28/2008, -3/+28Two words: oil pipeline.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -21/+46Funny how there was US Aid to Georgia waaay quicker than Aid to our own citizens after Katrina.
- RealmDown, on 08/28/2008, -0/+23It *is* a second Navy.
- Meekus, on 08/28/2008, -14/+37I agree. And, did anyone catch Biden's DNC speech last night? He specifically said something to the effect of "Russia needs to be punished" for it's dealings with Georgia.
We need to stop this continued interventionist foreign policy already! - Hangly, on 08/28/2008, -30/+53Not good.
I would say I hope that cooler heads will prevail, but we all know there are no cool heads in the US government anymore. The last one was Colin Powell. - wunksta, on 08/28/2008, -0/+22Building in progress
