Rodney King Shot in Southern California
laist.com — Rodney King, whose videotaped beating by LAPD officers (and their subsequent acquittal) sparked the Los Angeles riots in 1992, was shot late last night, according to San Bernardino police. King was shot in the face and arm while riding his bike home to Rialto.

- djh816, on 11/29/2007, -5/+3That was possibly the lamest attempt at being funny I've seen on digg lately.
- weeeezzll, on 11/30/2007, -0/+11People didn't riot because King was a good man done wrong, they started the riot because bad cops (who committed a crime) were acquitted in light of clear evidence of their wrong doing.
For years minorities have taken beating from cops and had little recourse other than their word against a cops, and we all know how that ends. When the video of King's beating came out it appeared to be a open and shut case. Needless to say, the minority community across the country was just a little upset at the lack of justice.
There is never a good reason for a riot, and I'm not going to sit here and condone one, but don't try to trivialize what actually happened.- OverlordXenu, on 11/30/2007, -5/+3A shaky video taken well after the start of everything...Really, it was a worthless video.
Wasn't King on PCP? - tsos2, on 11/30/2007, -4/+2Did you ever read the testimony of what happened that day? In case you didn't maybe this will give you an idea
"The acquittal was partly based on a segment of the video showing King getting up and charging at Powell. That 13-second segment was excluded from news broadcasts. Before that, the officers tried to restrain King but he threw them off, according to their testimony. This was not caught on tape."
Now imagine you're a cop and a big guy like King is charging you and you're co-workers after a chase... what the ***** would you do??? Maybe I was out of line with the "LA buring crap" but King is a turd for what he caused. "can't we all just get along???" The words of a man ridden with guilt....

- rajun50, on 11/30/2007, -0/+12...smaller pellets
- MalDON, on 11/30/2007, -1/+16Birds?
- Lukesed, on 11/30/2007, -1/+7That joke would only work if he had said that buckshot was loaded with bucks.
- HayString, on 11/30/2007, -2/+1It's not supposed to be a joke. He said it like only buchshot has pellets. He also said it like he knows a lot about shotguns. All shotgun rounds, except for slugs, are loaded with pellets, more appropriately referred to as shot. I was going to "enlighten" him if he had tried to tell me anything different.
- AC130Spectre, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0Buckshot shells only contain upto like 15 "pellets." Shotgun shells loaded with birdshot have hundreds of much smaller pellets. Being hit with buckshot would be much more serious than with birdshot, which from a distance (75-100 yds) isnt all that bad
- martyFREEDOM, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1Buckshots also have a pretty damn big slug in the middle. He could have been hit with birdshot from a distance, wouldn't be the first time.
- gmiley, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4No, a slug is different than buckshot. Buckshot are larger pellets, slugs contain one solid, shaped mass of metal. Birdshot contains many smaller pellets than buckshot.
- molochi, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1No, buckshot loads don't have a big slug in the middle (usually). The most common form of buckshot (00 Buck) uses .33 inch, shot. My 12gauge 2 3/4" shells of 00 buck have 9-12 projectiles (depends on the load). 12ga 00buck Magnum loads (usually in 3" and longer shells) can have 15 or more 00 projectiles. Exotic composite loads have existed that mix shot size and can even include a slug but I don't think it was ever a popular way of formulating a load. They tended to pattern poorly. And they wouldn't call it a buckshot load. It'd be more like a wacky "I can't figure out what I'm shooting at load."
- martyFREEDOM, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1Buckshots also have a pretty damn big slug in the middle. He could have been hit with birdshot from a distance, wouldn't be the first time.
- DeviantDragon, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2But nobody calls a shotgun a pellet gun. These are what people call pellet guns: http://images.google.com/images?q=pellet+gun&ie=UT ...
- HayString, on 11/30/2007, -2/+4If buckshot is loaded with pellets, then what is birdshot loaded with?
- Phatt138, on 11/30/2007, -2/+4"That's a pretty big ***** difference there."
Depends on the distance you're talking about.- DeviantDragon, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Still, in order to equate the damage from a shotgun to that of a pellet gun, you would always be much further away with a shotgun than the pellet gun and that's not taking into account the number of projectiles striking said target.
- marmanukem, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2No if it was buckshot he would be in a lot more trouble. Bird shot has pellets about that size. If fired from a considerable range he might have only gotten hit with a few pellets.
- Shadotek, on 11/30/2007, -2/+4Don't pellet me, bro!
- xsidekick409, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2Pellets from what I would call a "pellet gun" (BB or airsoft) are not deadly. Pellets from what I would call a shotgun are deadly. I would never confuse a pellet gun with a shotgun. They need to fix that ambiguity.
- wavenger, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0It's probably just ambiguous because they don't actually know at this point which one it is. Just because you know the difference doesn't mean King does, and while he completed the ride home he was definitely eager to get away.

- Pake, on 11/29/2007, -3/+54Anyone else find it funny that he called the police?
- boombye, on 11/30/2007, -3/+5Maybe he's hoping they'll actually do their job this time instead of beating this ***** out of him on a traffic stop.
- badjoke, on 11/30/2007, -3/+6So him running from the cops and being all coked out is just a friendly, routine traffic stop?
- boombye, on 12/02/2007, -0/+1You don't even live in California, that ***** only happens because people don't want to get lost in the system on that 3 strikes *****.. It's too easy to pin something on someone 3 times without them doing it, until they finally get sent away. Spend some time in a county jail and you'll be shocked at how many people haven't even had their first court date appearance for whatever they got locked up for. I suppose that's not how it works on tv, which is where you get all your legal insight, but my loser ass was an even bigger loser once before and I've had to go thru that *****..
the only thing that'll help you when you're locked up is your economic class, and if you can afford to pay thousands for bond for ***** you never even did.

- Trumane, on 11/29/2007, -0/+14I used to work in that area, I think people just get shot at random around there. One if the worst parts of one of the worst cities in So Cal.

where you working at some sort of mall/shopping center. thats the only kind of work that city has?. - MikeFallopian, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1I used to work there too, pretty boring place. - salinemist, on 11/29/2007, -15/+11Rodney King is a waste of space on this planet. It's a shame they missed.
- boombye, on 11/30/2007, -9/+2Why is he a waste of space? All he did was get pulled out of a truck and get the ***** beaten out of him, and people were just fed up with it. So he's a waste of space because he got his ass beat for no reason?
- cyph3r05, on 11/30/2007, -2/+9its not fair to say this without mentioning that he had been evading the police. I am against police brutality, but i don't mind it so much if there was a crime committed.
- boombye, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1so if i hide from you or run away from you, then you're going to beat me up because you were incapable of keeping up? upgrade your ***** then and stop driving slow ass crown vics that all sound the same from a block away.
- Orderless, on 11/30/2007, -2/+5Yeah, they had absolutely no reason to beat him at all. It had nothing to do with the high speed chase he led the cops on nor the fact that he was intoxicated. And if you don't already have enough sense to not run from the cops while you're high, you deserve a good beating.

- Pixelante, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1People were fed up with him being beaten because he couldn't take it.
- boombye, on 12/02/2007, -0/+1How about they couldn't take that happening every single ***** day to their brothers, sons, fathers, or cousins.. LA cops were so bad that everything stereotyped them in the media at that time as being some nazi police force, especially in all the movies in the 90s that portrayed an LAPD officer...

- skjede, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2There's really no way it was anything but some stray shotgun pellets if it struck him in more than one place.
- AC130Spectre, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1I agree completely... unless there was like 5 seconds between hits, it had to be a shotgun
- greaseddeafguy, on 11/30/2007, -11/+4too bad he's not dead

- ZenMojo, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Turn his life around? And do what, avoid getting shot by crazy ***** while riding his bike?
- Pixelante, on 11/30/2007, -1/+0Make it crazy low-life ***** who couldn't afford a decent rifle.
- bonds, on 11/30/2007, -2/+9They didn't mention that he was riding his bike down the highway at over 100 mph, and was drunk on Chivas Regal.
- mrogi, on 11/30/2007, -3/+37Rodney King was awarded a $3.8 million tax free settlement for his 1991 beat down. The money did not change Rodney one tiny bit. He was a no good scumbag before he got rich, a pus-filled tumor when he was rich, and a pile of rat ***** now that his dumb ass is dead broke again.
- BeyondGoodNEvil, on 11/30/2007, -1/+5He deserved the beating. How he's lived his life after it confirms the officer testimony that he was throwing punches and not cooperating when they tried to arrest him. He has been arrested numerous times afterwards, from drug use to beating his girlfriend.
- Procure, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4Don't forget the time in 2001 he was high on PCP and wrapped his SUV around a telephone pole... Or indecent exposure that year, or speeding and running a red light while drunk in 2003, or... etc etc
- alwilson, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2It's good to see you are keeping tabs on him.
- nudedos, on 11/30/2007, -2/+1damn videogames.
- OverkillTASF, on 11/30/2007, -1/+14Ok, since most of you seem to have gotten a firearms education from right clicking in Half-Life and watching the shottie plaster some poor sap on the wall... Shotguns can fire many different size munitions. From big 1 oz full-bore slugs to the well-known 00 buckshot, all the way down to almost a fine dust, "rat shot". Shot actually loses velocity pretty quickly once it exits the barrel. Just like with Cheney's news-item, being "shot by a shotgun" doesn't mean someone jammed a double barreled 12 gauge under some guys chin and pulled the trigger. If you've ever seen a skeet field, there's not a whole lot of distance between the field and civilization, despite the fact that most shots are taken at a high angle, which would lend to long trajectories. This is because shot does not hold on to its kinetic energy for long. Since they're not sure if it was a pellet gun or a shot gun, it was probably bird shot (As buck shot is significantly bigger than a standard .177 pellet or bb). A shotgun with a wide choke firing fine bird shot, you're only going to get hit with a few pellets and they're not going to get a whole lot of penetration. So, just because he wasn't a smear on the pavement doesn't mean he wasn't shot at and "hit" by a shotgun.
- wrestlingnrj, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2I've been hit in the face and upper chest with #8 bird shot from about 100ft and it just made me bleed a little. Thank God for safety glasses or it could have been a lot worse.
- AC130Spectre, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1100 ft, damn... i bet that hurt a little. I've been hit from 50 yds with 7 1/2 and it wasnt any fun
- cgruber, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1I've had it 'rain' on me duck hunting. It's enough to make you slightly nervous but obviously not dangerous at that speed/distance.
- alwilson, on 11/30/2007, -1/+0So, from a distance, getting shot by a shotgun is not so bad.

- BeyondGoodNEvil, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4Too bad they didn't beat him to death. Could have saved a lot of trouble. I mean Jesus, look at that list... Hit and Run, Domestic violence, beating girlfriend, indecent exposure, DWI, robbery. The man was a ***** CAREER CRIMINAL who drove 100mph down residential streets on drugs and threw punches at the cops trying to arrest him. They give him $3.8M b/c blacks stand up for that sort of behavior and hold cities hostage by threat of mob violence. It's amazing that we ONLY beat criminals. There was a time when they'd just lynch the *****. Not because he's black, but because he's an indisputable piece of *****.
