- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45That'll buff right out.
- vaguelyrandom, on 10/12/2007, -10/+56Why link Youtube over Google Videos? It's not like they are both owned by the same company or anything.
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -13/+21Just gives you more options (I prefer YouTube for embedding in HTML) -- and the quality looks better in the YouTube version, IMO.
- primehifi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Poor Hamster.
- KiaserLies, on 10/12/2007, -22/+11I expected it to me more extreme than that to be honest
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25"I expected it to me more extreme than that to be honest."
After a lot of build-up, I can see why. But remember in the typical crashes you see in F1 etc, the cars are designed to crumple up to absorb impact, bits fly off deliberately. It may look more spectacular but the driver will usually walk away totally unharmed.
This car wasn't ever designed to crash. If you had been inside that vehicle, you wouldn't be wishing is was more extreme! - andyrobo60, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I can understand what he is saying (in the car) a lot more now on my pc with headphones than when i watched it on tv.
- lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I just noticed searching on google video for a better quality version of the footage that from video.google.com it also searches youtube for results now. I figured that might be useful to know if anyone doesn't already.
don't forget: Speed Kills!
or it makes you go really fast.
zooooom! - al28p, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1just walk it off, you'll be alright
- viewtiful4ever, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1"Why link Youtube over Google Videos? It's not like they are both owned by the same company or anything."
I think google bought youtube like a month ago... i think... - WestDC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually, speed doesn't kill.That's a fact.
It's the sudden stop that does it!
EDIT: Oops, somebody had already said it. Digg me down. - Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bah, they deleted my video on YouTube. Ah well, it got a good 24k views while it was up.
- hANDoFdEVIL, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Its ridiculous how people loosely use the word 'we'. OK, so some Brit or some American has done something at some point in history. How the ***** can you claim credit for it by saying 'we' did that. Bunch of wankers! you personally did nothing except post crap on Digg. Thank you.
- skankyBacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Its ridiculous how people loosely use the word 'we'. OK, so some Brit or some American has done something at some point in history. What does this have to do with anything? None of the posts in this thread use the word "we" at all (until yours). - hANDoFdEVIL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0sorry... meant to post comment for the thread below. digg down.
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -194/+16I hope the BBC gets this taken down. I don't pay my licence fee so that the Americans can see it for nothing.
- gconeen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+79ha, welcome to the internet neiltc13
- avcore, on 10/12/2007, -51/+5Die.
- Myonosken, on 10/12/2007, -56/+10You're a ***** ***** you know that?
PS: I'm guessing you're about 13 and don't actually pay a fee, as there is NO ONE who considers their license fee so close to themselves that they'd say that. - neave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38The video is already available globally on the BBC's website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo/programmes/?id=top_gear it's not exclusive to the UK as far as I can tell.
(and quit it with the bad language while you're at, grow up) - uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34I can't believe they force brits to pay that silly tax. Feel free to download '24' free of charge.
- coldstatue, on 10/12/2007, -29/+12We Americans take what we want, when we want it, from anyone and everyone. Haven't you learned? There's nothing you can do.
Hide your daughters with their sexy accents and terrible teeth. - Brandondork, on 10/12/2007, -62/+2we saved your ass in WWI and WWII, we deserve to take anything we want from you... you us... big time!
- Pifko, on 10/12/2007, -13/+39FFS, Americans always mentioning the f*cking war. Stop milking that already.
At least it's going well over in Iraq...
...
He-he... - amaclean, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20Wow, the worst side of Americans and Brits in the same thread! Awesome. Only on digg.
- Utopian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"I don't pay my licence fee so that the Americans can see it for nothing."
That's very kind of you... but I'm not sure I follow your logic. - madjo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You do realize that we in The Netherlands get to watch Top Gear for free (with commercial breaks) on one of our channels (Veronica)..
And we have BBC1, BBC2 and BBCWorld to choose from. (BBCWorld also airs a (slightly shortened) version of Top Gear.)
Yes, I know that you are paying a hefty fee to watch tv, and we used to have that too. Just be lucky that you still do, because all our channels are creating crappy programs, probably because they don't get enough money.
And I'd love to pay to keep BBC1 and 2 on our telly. (because I really like the programming they make) - Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Welcome to the wonderful world of subsidization. We Americans have to do it with just about everything and can get over it, so can you. What do you pay for prescription drugs in Britain that were developed in America? I get all my news from the BBC simply because it is better (much, much better) than any of the politically slanted sensationalized networks that are produced here. Please don't make me feel guilty about it and I won't make you feel guilty about me having to pay higher drug costs to keep yours down ;)
- famousdave, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4"I hope the BBC gets this taken down. I don't pay my licence fee so that the Americans can see it for nothing."
Well, we invented Digg and YouTube. I think the value you are getting out of this site and others more than covers whatever we might owe you. - wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3"Well, we invented Digg and YouTube. I think the value you are getting out of this site and others more than covers whatever we might owe you."
And on top of that, we invented the frickin internet. We also have the DNS servers (which you will never own) that routed you to the BBC site. Then we could also get into electricity and all that, but what's the point? It's good to share. - fuzzmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@cacoe
Americans invented the Internet, but the WWW was invented at CERN (by Tim Berners-Lee). So, technically, he's right :-) - PhantomBantam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ha! TV tax... I'd be angry too.
- famousdave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9cacoe
Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, not the internet. Thats like saying Henry Ford invented cars.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Kleinrock - GunFingers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1*Edit - Nevermind, my point has already been made by others and acknowledged. Nothing to see here.
- famousdave, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2"Well at least because of the Brits, we're no longer using BBS to communicate"
And thanks to the Americans you no longer need the Encyclopedia Britannica to look up who invented the WWW.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Wales - e3boy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@ neiltc13
ahhh yes you do! thanks mate! - joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25This is fun.. it's the "What have the Brits/Yanks ever done for us" digg conversation.
I'll continue with what the Brits have done for Yanks.
We wrote your national anthem
We started your navy for you
We started your country
We named your city's ... York, Boston, Cambridge etc etc.
We started the modern legal system.
We constituted enough of your population from the very beginning so that you don't all entirely speak French, German or Spanish.
In essence your entire society was started by US..... the British. Hell us Brits started mass production and WERE the industrial revolution. ANYTHING on earth which isn't powered by log fire is because of us.
The USA is just one of our many achievements. You might raise the thing about the "American war of independence" or something. But frankly at the time we were spread a little thin because at the time we have been fighting for 20 years and RAN THE ENTIRE PLANET.
But we gave all that back..... what the hey, we didn't need it.
Your turn.... this IS fun. - domokunt, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1and... WE WON WORLD WAR 2! dammmit!
- skankyBacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"gave it back" is a nice way of phrasing it I guess. Thanks for "handing over" the country without the need for any violence or anything.
- hANDoFdEVIL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its ridiculous how people loosely use the word 'we'. OK, so some Brit or some American has done something at some point in history. How the ***** can you claim credit for it by saying 'we' did that. Bunch of wankers! you personally did nothing except post crap on Digg.
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@ hANDoFdEVIL
Dude it's not like I was using the "Royal we" I was using the "editorial we".
Besides my comment, if that's the "we's" you were referring to, was meant to work on a few levels.
It was making a "digg" at the people who are constantly arguing on virtually every British story that pops up on digg. Numerous times I eluded to the fact that WE (see....where I said "US" meaning the both of as well as THE... US) are both the same anyway.
Where I said that the British did those things for America etc. It was because back then we WERE the "USA"..... so even more "we are you" if you go back far enough. Thus making all the arguments very pointless.
But all the stuff I said was true. You might not like to think that you are a British franchise but..... sorry it's a fact. The US can argue all they like that the US "did that and that for you Brits in WWII" but what does that matter; you might have better argument on that front if you actually came and helped BEFORE everything was blown to ***** and the battle came your shores.
But whatever........ like you said it's all History.
Bottom line I was dugg up for the Monty Python reference.... nothing more. :P
- gconeen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6sweet, i've been wanting to see this for a long time now. good digg.
- datcrazydj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+52"Because my challenge today is to drive this thing and hit this innocent looking little button. Because when I do that, it sends a flame shooting through the engine which ignites the afterburner. And when that happens, I don't have 5000 horsepower, I've got 10,000 horsepower.
And possibly the biggest accident you have ever seen in your life."- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Famous last words... ;D
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35The fact that they can come in and joke about such a horrible accident (and funny jokes none the less) shows what a great cast, screw, and show Top Gear is.
- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -8/+58:08 is the actual accident. 0:52 is the most shocking crime I've ever seen put on video.
- benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2what, littering? bad british humor?
- dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"shocking crime"??
.... elaborate please?
- MLyzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23"Im so alive, Im so alive!"
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That bit got to me the most -- those could have been his last words, saying "I'm so alive!!" doing the thing he loved most. Thankfully it wasn't.
- dignews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But when he said he feels so alive was because of the adrenaline and blood which was throughout his body, during the accident all that adrenaline may actually have saved his life because his body would have been full with blood.
- dcramps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13220mph sliding sideways upside down. He is incredibly lucky.
- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'd say you'd have to be pretty *unlucky* to end up in a situation like that.
- Sundownvf111, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3i've seen worse top-fuel dragster crashes(one actually in person )............ but still he was VERY lucky
- danakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"Speed kills"
- turbo2ltr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Speed doesn't kill. Its the sudden stop that kills you.
- uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Good to see that he's not brain damaged.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5His head actually ploughed a furrow in the ground though :o
Good to see him keeping his good spirit on Top Gear now, amazing how your body can heal :-)
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5His head actually ploughed a furrow in the ground though :o
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5all i have to say is "Jesus Christ"...
- halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -18/+8i would of said "darwin"
- finknottle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13What did the audience member say after they showed the crash?
- modbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I recorded the show with my Pioneer DVR-440HX and after listening to it at high volume you can hear the audience member say, "well done mate, its over. dont worry."
- Endies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Best show there is.
- masterofNone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6that guy's my hero.
- pwnt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22That guy is great.
"To get a guiness world record, you have to do it in the other direction aswell" LMAO - CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19After showing the crash on the teli, R. Hammond posted a blog entry on top gear website: http://www.topgear.com/blogs/planettopgear/018-watching-my-crash/
There is also Flash animation with commentary on the details of the crash: http://www.topgear.com/content/features/stories/2007/01/stories/09/1.html- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2submit that to digg. It really deserves its own story - so it can get more exposure to the digg crowd.
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I surrendered in submitting stories to Digg a long time ago. Worthless since it is almost impossible to get to the front page.
- Kamisado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Is it just me or in the shots after the crash (the live ones) does he look alot more immaciated and aged than he was? It was more evident when it was live on TV.
Still, hes lucky to come out of that wreck with only aged skin.- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah he does look a bit worse. I hope a bright shirt, some hair gel and teeth whitening will make things better.
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5He didn't look quite that bad when he was on Jonathan Ross a few weeks ago. Maybe just stressed at being back and dealing with it so much as he has been.
- magicmarc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I noticed it on TV too. It may just be quite a bit thinner.
- NinjaJedi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Must be all that celery he's eating!
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Mininova 700mb torrent of the full episode: http://www.mininova.org/tor/561772
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1the slow clap after he describes it is A+
- Pifko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13F*ck me, I didn't think James May's hair could get any worse!
- Kamisado, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I wrote into Top Gear last season telling him what a tit he looks like and to get a haircut. Seriously, we need a petition for this...
"The viewers of Top Gear would like to suggest that Hamster and Clarkson forcibly remove James May's hair or blur his entire head for the duration he is on screen."
TV gold. - tipexy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2James May was without a doubt wearing a man corset last night, you could all but see the seams.
- Kamisado, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I wrote into Top Gear last season telling him what a tit he looks like and to get a haircut. Seriously, we need a petition for this...
- Plato, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So glad to see Hamster back!
Amen for his healthy return and recovery and thank you for posting! Been a long few months awaiting their return. - aragami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what astonished me is how quickly he recovered from such a serious injury
hammond is exceptionally lucky not only to be alive but lucky not to be brain damaged at the same time. - TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hammond FTW!
- DrGonzo1184, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I finally have time to load up digg after dealing with insurance companies all day over my crash last night (not my fault, the other guy veered into my lane on a turn and hit me)... and this is the first story I see. Well, at least my crash was not as bad.
- dkirkham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I really want to know what the guy shouts out after Hamster describes using his head for an anchor, can anyone make it out?
- DarkwingDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amazing vid. Was glued to the show earlier... well done to the hamster for facing it
- fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Top Gear is such an incredible show.. they REALLY need to bring it here to the states
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Meh....The US networks would only make it a watered down version with the hosts too afraid to say what they really think about the cars due to advertising/legal reasons
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7So very sad yet true. Plus we'd only get to see Paris Hilton or some rapper driving a tricked-out pimped-out SUV.
Typical commentary from idiotic but pretty host, "Just look at the way the bling all comes off the ride as Paris swerves to miss the paparazzi! But damn those rims look cool!" - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why not just bring the UK version to one of the US Networks? That way it couldn't be harmed, except by the ads they'd put in =/
- PhantomBantam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe if it were put on MTV, but I don't see crap like that on discovery channel, or... discovery channel HD. [EDIT] forgot about PBS.
- swordedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They did broadcast about ten episodes on Discovery but since "I" liked it, it must be killed. So they did.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Were you the git that liked Arrested Development as well? Please stop liking stuff.
- Mac454, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Just finding this after discovering Top Gear. BBC America plays episodes for anyone that hasn't figured that out yet.
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1When I first saw him on Jay Leno I thought Wolverine from Xmen had an accident, they look very much alike.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm impressed they had the guts to air this footage, and Hammond was such a good sport about it.
- magicmarc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hammond actually wanted it to be aired !
- Vectortrance, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Top Gear is the greatest car show on TV. A little British-car biased at times. In fact its anti American for the most part ( see the corvette eppisode)
I'm glad hammie is okay though. - CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This should be linked in Wikipedia under Irony, because of the comments Hammond made before he took off for the last run "...10 000 horsepower, and possibly the biggest accident you've ever seen in your life," "I don't want to go upside down" and "Oh yes!, I'm so alive, I'm so alive."
- dkirkham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would you want to put false information on wikipedia?
- MihaiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.finalgear.com/
- ch28kid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Speed kills.
- SebG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yay for Top Gear being back
The greatest car show on earth
Good thing Hamster made it though without any big complications - TechLaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is not much more to say than WOW!
- lewikee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What does World of Warcraft have to do with this?
- jazzhands, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really hate this wierd rivalry between England and America that pops up each time there is a story on the UK.
How has it got anything to do with the Story/Crash??!!!
Wow, so we have to pay a license fee and people could down load it for free on onther countries.
They can also watch it free ad supported on BBC World.
We pay for a more extended uncut version. Anyone who has watched top gear on SKY/ UKTV G2 will know how frustrating it is to see the cut add supported version.
Its really 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.
The U.S has some excellent shows that it is continually raising the bar with (Lost, 24, Prison Break etc).
Stop crying and start enjoying. - kag9000, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I found the whole backslapping sycophancy all a little nauseating. What is so heroic about getting out of a hospital bed after a self inflicted serious injury? It's good old plain selfish self-interest, nothing heroic about it.
- Nurjle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, it's nauseating to see work colleagues express concern about each others' health and happiness about them recovering from a near-fatal car crash.
/sarcasm
- Nurjle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, it's nauseating to see work colleagues express concern about each others' health and happiness about them recovering from a near-fatal car crash.
- ElementStormx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hamster FTW
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1the crash put the show on the map. thats why there milking so much out it.
- dignews, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nah Top Gear was already very very popular in Britain, it is estimated that it gets an audience of over 5 million every week.
- deano6410, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The show was huge well before the crash, but now it is seen more in other countries.
- kawser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone put the new Top Gear on YouTube.
- kawser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well when no one did it I had to do it so here you go: http://www.digg.com/television/New_Top_Gear_Season_9_Episode_1_Is_Up_On_YouTube
