Rich terrorist, poor terrorist
physorg.com — New research suggests political freedom and geographic factors contribute significantly to causes of terrorism, challenging the common view that terrorism is rooted in poverty.

- NewAgeFreak, on 03/27/2008, -2/+3Most crime is rooted in poverty.

- urik88, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Terrorism is more than just "crime".
- str3ama, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4They're a lot of poor and rich people that don't up terrorism, it's more to do with how alienated that person is from society. The more or less stratified they are to a society (eg: high feeling of belonging to community, or very low level of fitting in with a community) - the more likely they are to commit such volatile acts.
This isn't anything new, they usually applied it to suicide - so a soldier may throw himself on a grenade having felt so much loyalty and comradeship with his fellow soldiers that he is willing to kill himself to protect them or maybe a person so closely knit with their community that they feel they must kill others to protect it. In the opposite, you have someone who sees no point in helping or preserving the community that they willingly kill themselves (eg: kids bullied on, etc) and in terms of terrorism, there are people who just don't feel they have a place in their respective community/society that they seek to destroy it - things like Columbine (which most probably wouldn't label as terrorism).- hansk, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Agreed. In fact, we see the worst come out as a 'us versus them' mentality. Mao and Stalin used it when killing his own people (communist doctrine dictates that if u are not with the people, then you are against them and therefore can be murdered), the Nazis used this in their campaign of the destruction of the Jews, by making up a lie about a Jewish plot which caused Germany's defeat in ww1 (stab in the back theory). We are seeing this today as Muslims take on the infidels of western civilization, it's alive and well in white supremacists, and basically the doctrinal backbone of any other evil organization of humans on this planet.
- JimmySpaza, on 03/27/2008, -7/+3Buried as inaccurate. Most terrorists, including the 9/11 hijackers, come from well-to-do families.
Liberals, repeat after me:
It's the evil Islamic ideology, stupid, not the economy.- Terr01, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2Yeah, because it's just totally obvious that Al Queda leadership picked those operatives to handle a major strike in a foreign contry totally randomly from their ranks and that those hijackers are therefore a completely representative sample of all groups that have both an islamic ideology and a history of suicide attacks. Stupid libtards.

Yeah, and there have been no terrorist attacks in Russia by Chechen separatists. Oh... wait...
I actually have never heard terrorism blamed on economics. It's always boiled down to hatred. Look at Palestine. They want their own country, and they *hate* Jews... and there's been terrorism attacks against Israel since it became a nation. And 9/11? That looked a hell of a lot like hatred to me too.
-Pie - mali1, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2I disagree with this. What happens in Pakistan and Afghanistan is that poor kids from poor families join radical madrasas that instill them with their radical viewpoints and hatred. And the madrasas are fully financed by the Saudi Govt. for tuition, room and board. They actively seek out poor kids to convert to their cause. The only way these kids can get an education and a daily meals is through joining an extremist madrasa. And it is these type of kids that grow up to be the suicide bombers.
- hansk, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Poor people are easier to manipulate and control because they do not have the education to think critically.
That being said, their puppet masters are quite rich and well educated. This is an ideological struggle limited to religion. If it was simply a matter of money, why not hire human bomb delivery vehicles (suicide bombers) from the dirt poor regions of China, South America, or especially Africa (where not only are they poor, they are suffering from an AIDS pandemic)?

- angusm, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Successful revolutionaries and terrorists alike tend to come from the educated middle classes. However, they often depend on a steady supply of foot soldiers willing to die for the cause, and those are easier to find among people who don't have much to lose. There's something to be said for trying to set things up so that everyone has something to hope for, and a greater interest in preserving society than in tearing it down.
- DeskFlyer, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1Rich terrorist, poor terrorist.....then there's - ACHMED THE DEAD TERRORIST!
- Ell3, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1Terrorism is no more rooted in poverty than crime is rooted in poverty.
- trenchfever, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1I grew up in one of the remotes parts of India. The worst instance of terrorism I ever had to endure was blackouts during the cricket world cups. That was simply atrocious. Parts of me died inside during those testing times.
- jjive, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1OK, for one thing this title is misleading.
Money only bold-ens ones conviction, not make it.
BTW...this is not a political statement, just a statement from a broke M.F.
