- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -1/+73I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM GT with 178k miles on it. I tried to alert The Vatican on multiple occasions, but they insist that a modern Pontiac with over 150k miles and the original transmission isn't a miracle.
- Bloodwine, on 04/27/2009, -7/+47Now they need to kill off Buick
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -6/+46Bad Marketing on their end and not enough good cars. I loved all their old Muscle cars, but they failed on the re-makes. It is sad when any good think comes to an end...
- Christianptriot, on 04/27/2009, -14/+47Detroit has not put out a solid performance vehicle since 1976. What killed the US auto industry was hanging on to the elements of the muscle cars that attracted 1960s buyers in the fist place, and not grabbing onto the advances in technology quickly enough to keep up with the world's automotive industry to remain competitive.
That, and exorbitant wages forced upon them by the Unions. - Smokeydabear, on 04/27/2009, -1/+34My dad has a great old 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix when we were kids. It was a good car. I remember him hitting a deer with the thing and the only thing that was broken on the car was the plastic grill. One of my dad's friends gave him a bunch of frozen fish one day during the summer. My father put it in his car, on the floor of the back seat, when he was leaving work but forgot about it over a weekend. He had to rip all the carpet out of the car, down to the bare metal and scrub everything to get the smell out. The smell was never really gone. There were many good times riding around in that car listening to Dire Straits and ZZ Top tapes.
- grantmoore3d, on 04/27/2009, -2/+30I like the random fish story that really had nothing to do with the vehicle itself.
- akula89, on 04/27/2009, -8/+32the Pontiac G8 must live on
- KimmyGibbler, on 04/27/2009, -3/+27Maybe you shouldn't hang out with violent trannies. What did you do to piss her off anyway?
- thedcam, on 04/27/2009, -19/+43One down, twelve brands to go.
- nizzy1115, on 04/27/2009, -6/+29Perhaps id be more sad if they actually had remade the GTO right instead of having it look like a family sedan. They had one of the most widely known names in history and to make it look like a sedan saddened me.
I own a pontiac as my daily driver. I have had it for over 9 years since new and its been rock solid through taking a beating from me every day. Though im not exactly sad to see them go as most of their cars were clones of chevy cars.
ie. sunfire = caviler
cobolt = g5 etc.
so its not like were really losing any cars here. - piratearggghhh, on 04/27/2009, -3/+24The only Pontiac I ever liked was KITT from Knight Rider.
- GREEDOnvrFIRED, on 04/27/2009, -2/+23yes the Firebird and GTO were great. So was CBGBs. And the McRib. But nothing lasts forever.
- designerutah, on 04/27/2009, -1/+21GM should have cleaned up their brands and lines long ago. Never have seen the need for so many duplicate cars with minor rebranding. If it doesn't sell well under GM, why would it sell better under Pontiac with a few interior changes?
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -1/+21Aztek owners must be lamenting. Because if you bought an Aztec you HAVE to be a diehard Pontiac fan.
- grimacebrown, on 04/27/2009, -0/+18DAMN! Now my hopes of them bringing back the amazing, unadulterated, sexy, and muscular Fiero are dashed forever...
- bochiman, on 04/27/2009, -8/+24Bad news
- ricksite, on 04/27/2009, -0/+14It is hard to believe that no one stopped this thing from coming to market. There is a lesson to be learned. If you are working on a project and it is ugly as *****, you gotta speak up.
- loopis, on 04/27/2009, -0/+14The McRib will last forever in my heart.
- Andrewbot, on 04/27/2009, -2/+15I pray another GM name will pick up the G8 GT, that is one helluva car...
It is a shame to see Pontiac go, as a kid I loved the Pontiac Grand-Am, "the jaggity edges are cool!" - RudeTurnip, on 04/27/2009, -1/+14Parts of it are probably in your arteries still, so, yeah.
- DrDash, on 04/27/2009, -1/+14The G8 GXP is a good car... but one car does not make a brand (maybe 2 if you include the Solstice). I really hope they take the best of Pontiac and they become a new car under another GM brand.
- serif69, on 04/27/2009, -0/+13Sad for fans, happy for investors, apparently. Stock is up about 25% in just two hours.
- Bloodwine, on 04/27/2009, -0/+12I wonder if he really believes it, but Jay Leno said the Aztek might be a good collector car. 20-30 years down the road they will be very unique compared to the other cars in this era.
- GuitarMC, on 04/27/2009, -0/+12Nope, it was a Holden. It has nothing to do with Ford.
- Smokeydabear, on 04/27/2009, -2/+14Very original.
- Biscuitz, on 04/27/2009, -1/+13While my Pontiac has been getting me from point A to point B for a very long time now =). Sorry your personal vehicle was *****, but mine is not.
- Spuy767, on 04/27/2009, -8/+19My G8 GXP begs to differ with you that they "failed" on the remakes.
- ZeNiTH456, on 04/27/2009, -0/+10What about the GTO remakes was a failure besides the marketing?
- cawpin, on 04/27/2009, -2/+12"Perhaps id be more sad if they actually had remade the GTO right instead of having it look like a family sedan."
I'm really getting tired of people saying that. Do you not know how the GTO started? It was a plain looking car with a powerful engine. It was a factory sleeper. They did the new one exactly like they did the original. - 4degrees, on 04/27/2009, -1/+11the vette still seems to be going strong... but thats about it. the camaro and fire bird died a few years ago.
- Smokeydabear, on 04/27/2009, -0/+10Well the story lends to the character of the car. Anyone who has ever owned a really old car knows that a lot of stuff is jerry rigged to make it work. There were other things under the hood; dubious wiring that at one point started on fire. When he had to rip out all the carpet, along with it went the heat shielding insulation. I remember my soccer cleats melting from the heat of the exhaust coming up through the floor. When my dad drove us to the old swimming hole you didn't dare put your bare feet on the metal or it would burn you.
There is another good anecdote, about him hitting the deer with the car. We were in the middle of no where when he hit it. We all got out, myself and two younger brothers. And my dad proceeds to kick the deer yelling "you *****" at the top of his lungs with each kick.
"Wait here," he said, thrusting a flashlight into my hand. My father got into the Prix and drove off into the night. My brothers and I stood there, shining the light onto the doe as snow fell around us. My youngest brother decided to tap the deer with his foot, and the animal went into spasms. We ***** lost our *****.
Five minutes later my dad came back with his friend, who had lived up the road. They loaded the deer into the very huge trunk, and we went to his house to clean the deer. The car suffered very little damage as a result of the crash; our emotions were a different story.
Anyway, the point I am trying to get is there are a million fathers out there like mine, and a million of these type of stories. A lot of dads had old pontiacs or chevys or fords that were beater cars. A lot of fun memories. - sdbyrd, on 04/27/2009, -0/+10R.I.P. Firebird/TransAm :(
- slapded, on 04/27/2009, -13/+22i sat in the passenger seat of a sunfire once on a highway trip. i almost died 3 times that day.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -5/+14Except that everyone in the auto industry is part of the UAW - and if person B doesn't pay it , person B loses almost all of their staff instantly. It's organized extortion.
- fluxion, on 04/27/2009, -1/+10was it the car?
was it the driver?!
was it the drivers of other cars?!!
join us next week for the conclusion. - Spuy767, on 04/27/2009, -1/+9No, they need to bring the chinese buicks stateside with american powerplants.
- Winkleman, on 04/27/2009, -23/+31i had a pontiac once.... it was a piece of *****. broke down on me all the time. we called it the "Pontiac P.O.S."
- Spuy767, on 04/27/2009, -5/+13I had a civic that the tranny broke at 70k, and I have an '84 cutlass with over one half million miles on it with no major mechanical problems whatsoever.
- Spuy767, on 04/27/2009, -0/+8I can't tell if you're a troll, or an imbecile.
- ryan69969, on 04/27/2009, -7/+14Bad move on GM's part to kill Pontiac. No wonder the company is in trouble with that sort of management. A better restructuring would be:
Chevrolet: consumer truck line
GMC: commercial truck line
Pontiac: base auto line
Cadillac: luxury auto line
Kill the rest: Saturn, Buick, Hummer, Saab... Also, shift emphasis to service, maintenance, and brand loyalty. GM needs to nurture its makes and models rather than always rolling out new models, discontinuing others, etc. Who wants to buy a car that will not even be manufactured anymore in a few years time? - inactive, on 04/27/2009, -0/+7It was a Holden, not a Ford. Holden is the Australian subsidiary of GM.
- sanskrtam, on 04/27/2009, -0/+7The Chinese public loves Buick. So, no.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -0/+7Well, an old GTO is still great with proper care - much unlike the McRib, if you still have one of those lying around you should probably throw it out.
- Narcism, on 04/27/2009, -2/+9woudln't have been much better in a cavalier..
- apec766, on 04/27/2009, -1/+8You know they're making a new Camaro, right?
- soupdawg30, on 04/27/2009, -0/+7Pontiac cancelled their sports cars (Trans Am/Firebird) in favor of the then popular SUV market. SUVs fell out of favor and Pontiac essentially screwed itself.
- xdre, on 04/27/2009, -2/+9@Christianptriot:
There are two solid performance vehicles in Pontiac's 2009 lineup alone: The Solstice and the G8 GT. This is to say nothing of the numerous other Detroit brands with performance vehicles. So WTF are you talking about? - Birukun, on 04/27/2009, -1/+7Not identical - it IS a Matrix......
- Chupacabraz, on 04/27/2009, -0/+6No solid performance vehicles since 1976? Are you on crack? 2005-2006 Pontiac GTO with 400HP, 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, 13 second quarter mile. Not sure what your definition of solid performance is, but those numbers are pretty damn impressive.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -0/+6It will likely be back. This is just pandering to Congress, as sort of a "Look, we're doing something. See?" In reality it makes no difference to the corporate structure, as all their vehicles are shared platforms. This means that the factory that makes Pontiac G6s will just make Chevy Malibus instead since they are pretty much the same car.
Ideally, when things pick up, GM will "relaunch" Pontiac with much fanfare and all the long suffering Pontiac fans will swarm back with tears in their eyes and money in their hands. -
