Report: Sixth graders have sex during shop class WITH teacher present
wthr.com — During school hours in a classroom with an experienced teacher present, two sixth graders completed the act of intercourse...at least ten students were witnesses, some as "look-outs" to prevent discovery. No disciplinary actions were taken against the teacher. All teachers were told to keep quiet. School officials confirmed the event.

- zoombusa, on 10/12/2007, -15/+369"Two students were involved in inappropriate conduct in a lab class last semester. We have investigated the matter and taken appropriate action. The school corporation considers the matter closed and will have no further comment."
Associate Superintendent Jeff Swensson told Eyewitness News off camera the teacher didn't know what was going on because another student acted as a "look-out." But once the teacher discovered the behavior, immediate action was taken. Swensson says the students involved were recommended for expulsion. But he did not say whether the board followed that recommendation.
Looks like they handled the issue. Don't see what the big deal is now? Does everything have to be published in the news? Can't some things be dealt with and be over? The school did nothing wrong.- Monolith2, on 10/12/2007, -30/+307What i find weirdest is that they recommended the kids for expulsion.... Isn't school supposed to be there to help kids get a good start on life? What good would expelling those students do? Suspend them, separate them, discipline them, give 'em some therapy... but dont expell them. That's just giving up and saying "let's just add another pair of teenage, dropout parents to the world."
- 1389, on 10/12/2007, -116/+25@zoombusa,
It should be in the news because parents need to know that this type of incident can happen in public schools. - jmontes, on 10/12/2007, -19/+186Teenagers will have sex outside of their bedrooms at home? Thanks, now all parents can be on the lookout.
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -71/+24It is newsworthy because of the attempted cover-up. When will politicians and bureaucrats learn? People hate a cover-up. Besides this is a local TV station, they'll report almost anything.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -12/+124Cover up what? So they didnt tell everyone in the world, why should they?
- nightsweat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+265@jmontes -
That ain't "teenagers". Sixth graders are 11. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -49/+6You know, you got to wonder what the hell happened in the class. Did the teacher just stop and watch? Surely he could have at least said "Jimmy, put your pants back on".
- raynar, on 10/12/2007, -84/+9So...
#1 - If I was one of the kids having sex, I wouldnt brag. Probably took them 2 minutes, being all scared and what not. Not a bragging point.
#2 - Have you seen most of the people in shop? Not all, but most are 300lbs+ and look like they're face caught on fire and someone tried to put it out with a shovel. - blinkcowz182, on 10/12/2007, -26/+172Niiiice.
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -26/+21Noahhoward, of course they shouldn't broadcast it. However, the parents of the 13 or more students (2 participants, at least 10 witnesses, and 1 lookout) involved certainly needed to know. If you read the article you will see the teachers were told to keep quiet, and that the "Associate Superintendent Jeff Swensson confirmed it's true. It's been kept under wraps since November." That's an admitted cover-up. It is newsworthy.
- kevlarcupid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55Well said, Zoom. It's ridiculous that parents are simultainiously blaming schools for not doing enough to raise their kids for them, but in a situation like this, we're supposed to be outraged that the school took care of it? No. Good job to the teacher, and good job to the school board. They should stick up for themselves.
Add to that, the article did say that there were other kids acting as lookouts. Which implies that the kids weren't exactly in plain sight. It's pointless to have a lookout if the person you're hiding from can clearly see you. "Johnny, Susan? Why are you in the same seat? Oh! Carry on." I doubt it. - verifex, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3@raynar
Thanks, I've got that horrible, horrible image in my head now. EWW! - Anthem26, on 10/12/2007, -15/+45students having sex while the teacher was watching? hmm...i always thought it was the other way around.
- Slacker101, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3I live in Indiana. Dam were getting a bad rep. First there's Juvie on MTV or whatever and then armed and famous on VH1 now this?!?
- mickeyknoxxx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35i'm so glad people are saying what I was thinking. The matter was resoolved. i commend the school for doing such a good job of not feeding into the prying deathj grip of the media. I think should just leave well enough alone.
kids are kids. They experiment. - Verdanic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16@raynar,
What the hell? Since when? Shop is just a fun class to take in middle school - you're saying that it's only ugly kids who take it for the most part? - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -11/+27I don't know why this is so unbelievable: They *are* 6th graders. It's not like the kid needs a lot of time to finish.
- popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12@slacker:
"I live in Indiana. Dam were getting a bad rep."
Well hey, at the end of the day, you can say 'at least we're not Florida'. It's so bad there that Fark has a Florida tag which pretty much says it all. - xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43I agree. Stuff like this happens in schools all of the time. Usually, the teachers never find out. Tell me you've not known of or heard of someone having sex at school personally. If not, you went to a really lame school. 6th grade is a little young. I couldn't imagine my little cousin in 6th grade getting some. He still watches spongebob.
- jkenneth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Schools do this kind of thing all the time, that is, keeping things quiet. They do it to cover their own asses. Just a few weeks ago, a cook in the kitchen at the school where I work physically grabbed a third grade kid and dragged him across the cafeteria by the hood on his coat, the kid was choking and gagging because his coat was zipped up. I was told NOT to call the police when I pulled out my cell phone to dial 911 and inform the police that an ASSAULT was occurring. So far, there hasn't even been an investigation and that guy is still working in the kitchen.
- jamessavik, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Ahhh... the educational code of silence puts the crooked cops code of silence to shame.

we ar ea society so set on punishment.. WEll a puntitive society.... Soooo we don't care if it ruins their lives. That's how it is. I'm moving to Canada though. - kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30I knew a sixth grader that was pregnant, and she was on her 2nd pregnancy!!!
- Icklehamsta, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16@xrisnothing

- jmoonb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20@xrisnothing

- hukedonfonix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@ jkenneth
Now the questions begs of what the did the little brat do to deserve being treated like that? The guy is a cook, a teacher may have to be PC about their punishments (or the complete lack of rather.) Instead of being a pussified sheep like the rest of the staff and faculty, he may have simply took it upon himself to teach the little snot nosed punk a lesson. - ThisIsMyName, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15"What i find weirdest is that they recommended the kids for expulsion.... Whatever... If the kids are having sex in 6th grade, and are letting friends watch & look out for them, my guess is that their destiny's already pretty much decided.
Blame the parents that raised them (or more to the point, who didn't raise them right to start with), not the schools that got stuck with them! Until you get your know-it-all ass in their and start teaching & changing the youth of today, you have no right to slam those who you disagree with. If I was a principal, I'd also be suggesting suspension or expulsion.
You can be assured that this wasn't their first time, and it's not likely to be their last... Would you want your 6th grader to be the next lookout for them, or perhaps their next sexual partner? - kaplanfx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25I can't believe I got through a relatively lengthy first thread on this particular topic without seeing the obligatory "Pics or it didn't happen" comment. (Yes I realize they are 6th graders, I'm just surprised and impressed by my fellow diggers restraint)
-Kap - TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14"""""What i find weirdest is that they recommended the kids for expulsion.... Isn't school supposed to be there to help kids get a good start on life?"""""
When kids have sex in FRONT OF other kids during school, YEAH you expel them. The punishment has to fit.

QFT - s0nicfreak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7How is expulsion a punishment, exactly? Sure, they're going to have to eventually make up the time they missed from school (probably... I've known a few cases of kids being expelled for the rest of the year but the grades they had gotten thus far were good enough to make them barely pass), but they're probably not going to see it that way. They're just going to see it as a get out of school for the rest of the year free card. So then they'd have their days free to have sex without a teacher watching.
I never really understood how suspension or expulsion were punishments. Do something bad enough and you get some vacation days... what lesson is that suppose to teach someone? - punksnotdead, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Hmm...It's idiocracy all over again you think they would go into the bathroom or something...Teacher and school got PWNED!!!

- hansning, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i understand that sex is getting less and less taboo and whatnot, but 6th graders, in class, that's not even empty?

i'm all for moving away from conservatism, but when what the heck is this?
kids. - chinaman1472, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2At least they're having sex with their classmates and not their teachers...
Anywho, whether everyone should know about it or not is THEIR BUSINESS and not the public. - Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2It is the school's business, and if the school wants to tell the news, go ahead. These little bastards had the balls to do this in the middle of class, they deserve to be all over the news, pictures everywhere.
I hope the little boy and girl both die. I'm 16 and I'm so jealous, gah.
No, I'm not jealous, but still, this is just sick. I do hope they die... they're the kind of mistakes that exist in this world.
I won't blame parents, because sometimes it's not their fault. Sure, a few times it is, but in a majority of the worst cases (like this) it's not as much the case.
I won't blame the school, because the teacher fought for expulsion, and the principal decided not to give it to them... that's the best thing. I think those kids, honestly, deserve to die. I'm sick and tired of these smart-ass kids.
I was a quick learner... I mean, my first girlfriend, when I was 6 years old, was 9 years old, and when we talked on the phone, pretty much the entire conversation was about having sex after we were married. As little kids, just to think we were "slick", we called it sand instead of sex. I mean, it's certainly not cute. Looking back at it, I'm astounded my mom didn't beat my ass for it. But kids *****? Their parents should douse them in kerosene and burn them alive.
But that's just my opinion. Holds no water :-D - yeahaboutthat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8To Blandyman:
Why the obsession with killing them? Burn them? You don't, like, baby sit children for movie money or anything do you? Hey, here's a thought, the military is always looking for murderous young go-getters like yourself. - DavidDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"What i find weirdest is that they recommended the kids for expulsion.... Isn't school supposed to be there to help kids get a good start on life?"
Note that we don't know if the kids were expelled. This is just one snapshot of a process, and it is possible to get the wrong idea very easily. - tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4By the way, expelling kids doesn't mean that they're kicking them out of the school system...they would just end up in an "alternative" school, which is probably what they need anyway.
- ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The problem is the schools are teaching the kids how to have sex, but are not spending time discussing appropriate vs. inappropriate behavior. Had these kids had proper sex-ed, they would understand that sex is reserved for a strong relationship and done in private and that failure to meet those responsibilities results in significant repercussions.
- meteorash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what? sixth grade!!
- ZanCakes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really don't have a problem with how the school reacted to this incident but I think a lot of my fellow diggers are forgetting just how young grade six is.
Most boys don't hit puberty until they're 13, girls maybe a bit earlier. These kids are 10 or 11!
I'm sorry, but I find it extremely disturbing hearing stories like these being dismissed as "kids are kids. They experiment".
Experiment with 10 of there class mates watching in shop class? BEFORE puberty? - navitatl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I didn't even realize that 6th graders had fully formed genitalia.

I am not insulting you but I'm really wondering how that could happen in the classroom? The shop room at that school must be huge, because the high school I go to, they watch us like hawks. And that's high school! I do not know how this happened in elementary school.

- Sixfiveguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Were they covering mortise and tenon joinery that day?
- lokai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+74Yes, this sort of thing happens in middle schools. Children are starting earlier these days. My area has had some problems with middle school-aged students performing various sex acts on one another, drug and alcohol use, violence, and other sketchy behavior. I have a strong feeling that these kids get up to even worse things in their own homes, right behind their parents' backs or, more likely, when their parents leave them home alone for any period of time. If these children are getting into these sorts of situations it is because they are choosing to do so on their own. Parents will rise up against the school system when they ought to be asking themselves what they are doing at home, as parents, to help stop this sort of thing.
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -6/+64Starting earlier these days? This has been happening for a long, long time.
- BrK1, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Can you define the other "sketchy" behavior? From what you wrote, everything seemed to be pretty standard behvior.
- NachoBusiness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43It might be comforting to think teenagers having sex is some brand new phenomenon, invented circa 2005, but it's really nothing new. I remember several occasions of kids having sexual contact during class when I was in middle school 20 years ago. 13-year olds came to school drunk and got high in the bathrooms. And it was a relatively "good" school.
- smilesofkarli, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2it's just scary to see what kids do when they should be learning. i remember freaking out when the kids on my bus in eighth grade, on a coach bus to a college basketball game as a field trip, the kids on my bus were practicing prostitution with the teacher in the front of the bus and completely unknowing. i didn't do anything and just ignored it, but freaked out if i were to get in trouble. my best friends got suspended for kissing, flashing, and other stuff to each other for money. it was crazy and no one else knew about it. it's just these kinds of things that make you wonder what the hell propels kids to do these kids of activities.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Children have always done things like this, but 10 years ago it was more likely that 13-14yr olds would be caught doing stuff like this. I think what he was trying to get at was that it is starting at younger ages. Kids are just getting more and more bold.
- kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9kids have gotten smarter, and parents forgot aobut the whole disciplining of children. Back when I was in middle school. It was this one girl tthat was 11 who would give out blow jobs if you gave her 50 cents. No one liked her well none of the girls.. She was kicked out of the school when the principal walked in on her sucking on some kid's penis. This is nothing new.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2NachoBusiness - Yet another person equating 6th grade with teenagers. What age were you when you were in 6th grade 10teen or maybe 11teen? What teen age are you referring to?
- NachoBusiness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@osbjmg
I don't really remember the ages, but I definitely remember this stuff in 7th grade happening in class. Not to me obviously. Not going to paint a picture but it was definitely there... anyone who acts like this never happened much before the current generation of kids is either lying or doesn't know what they're talking about.

Sure, a lot of people wait for college and are not exposed to this stuff because of their friends (or lack therof) and protective parents, but there are many early starters. No, but he said they were only to young to do it in class, Everyone should know the age limit for sex in shop is 15. - 4degrees, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11heh, seems the smart thing to do... think about it. its a form of birth control. at 11 boys are shooting blanks most likely anyway right? so get it out of their system before they start churning up the baby batter... its genius!
/sarcasm - syphron12, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Not to young to have sex but in class is just retarded.
- spyd3rweb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12obviously these kids were going to have sex because they wanted to, putting them under strict surviellance isnt going to stop them from wanting to. this stuff happened when i was in school, nothing new here, move along.

ages 3 to 18(21 limit for HS diploma).. Then college is optional though at the same time isn't optional anymore .. IF you ain't in college then you are ***** out of luck. No international travel, and htis is only because families like to tie down their young adults... - kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4At six years old you start in first grade. Elementary is usually considered first through fifth grade, with middle school being sixth through ninth. Except in private/parochial schools where elementary is first through eighth. High school is tenth through twelfth, except in the case of private/parochial where its ninth through twelfth.
Then you've got freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior years of college/university. - ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@kd1s
Dunno where you're from, but public schools in every city I've been in are 1-5, 6-8, and 9-12, not just private. - foxyfoxykitsune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I went to a public school that was k-3 (started when I was four cause i gotta winter b-day) then the next would have been 4-12 (they are now planning on just doing one k-12 school). Went to another public school that was k-6 but individual classrooms were k, 1-3 and 4-6 so after kindergarten you had the same teachers for 3 years. Then it would have been on to a 7-12 school but I moved to a district that was k-6 then 7-8 then a freshman building then High school was 10-12. Another are public school district near by that's broken up k->1-4->5-6->7-8->9->10-12

- Corinthos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I substitute teach occasionally in my area and when I was starting out I was warned about letting the students go to the bathroom at the same time. Also I was to tell them they'd have 5 minutes or someone would be down to get them. It was because the students had been caught going to closets and bathrooms and getting and receiving blow jobs. I was told it was a game the students had going to see who could get the most while at school. While I don't know if that part was true I was there when two 7th graders were caught in the women's restroom having sex. That last one was at a catholic school.

I substitute almost every day and although I've never been warned I try to never have 2 students out of the room at the same time. Also I have been discussiing a topic or using the overhead with the lights off I know some have had cell phone out text messaging, but then again they do that in the middle of class when I'm looking right at them. I do correct this when I see it, but there are time where I never know or find out second hand.

Raymond Park Middle School
Student Freedoms
In addition to the rights that govern our school, students have other freedoms as well. These freedoms may be revoked if they are abused.
1. Freedom of Association. Students may choose to associate with their friends during any free time activity (lunch, breaks, before/after school), during unstructured academic time (class work, partner study time, time designated by the teacher), or during group class work.
2. Freedom of Movement. Using posted procedures, students may use the restrooms, drinking fountains, and other school facilities without passes or special permission.
3. Freedom of Activity. During free time, students may use the cafeteria, commons area, and atrium to visit with friends and classmates. Students may also support and participate in numerous extra-curricula activities.
4. Freedom of Access. Following proper procedures, students may use the media center, computer facilities, cafeteria, LGI, gym, and other facilities designed for student use.

I never had any freedom like that in school. Bathroom / Hall pases, wearing your id at all times, not getting to socialize in class, ect. Lucky kids. - hotspot102, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Is it really a problem? At least they are not playing cowboys ands indians, or bowling for colombine.
Sex is pleasurable. Both parties unless its rape, benefit greatly, its a mutual decision. - joemc72, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12"Is it really a problem? At least they are not playing cowboys ands indians, or bowling for colombine.

As a parent of a 12 year old daughter, I have two problems with your logic. One, How do these kids "benefit" if their 5 minutes of fme happens to, oh...produce a child? C'mon. They were getting it on in a classroom, and I'm pretty sure they weren't thinking about being 'safe' outside getting caught. And two, the last time I checked, a 12 year old can't 'consent' legally to anything, so that arguement is moot. It'll be interesting to see how the parents react, though. I'm sure one set or the other will scream injustice... - kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5sorry to break it to you parents, but please get the stick out of oyur ass. You better tlak to your child about sex. Of course other cultures tend to talk about sex a lot earlier. In America when a kid says he feels weird on his crouch. It freaks the parent out, and the parent goes into silence. What happens? By the tim they are 10 or 11, and just discovered that their penis gets hard when seeing girls naked, and when girls start to realise that the weird thing htey are feeling is just them getting horny.. WEll they are going to do what anyone does when growing up.. EXPERIMENT......
Sorry but if you are afraid that your daughter or son is going to do this at the age of 12 then you should probaly have already taught them or start teaching them.. Be parents, and teach.

- hayleysongbird, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33So that substitute teacher who didn't know how to turn off the porn-pop ups on the computer gets how many years in jail?
- RoboRay, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11People that age have been having sex for hundreds of thousands of years. Why is it suddenly newsworthy?
- ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10How can a twelve-year-old have been having sex for more than twelve years?
In other news: English is losing. - MinisterOrange, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I agree. In ancient Rome girls were wed to a husband at 12 or 13 and shortly after started having children. Of course their life span was much shorter.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because they did it while in class?
- ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10How can a twelve-year-old have been having sex for more than twelve years?
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Firstly, they did the right thing by not telling everyone. Why should everyone know? That just creates a big media mess and adds confusion to the whole situation.
Secondly, they shouldn't expel kids for doing something that's natural. What they need is to be educated about sex. Sixth grade is the perfect time, IMO.
Thirdly, if you're witness to two boys having anal sex in shop class, you may want to consider changing your course to something like home economics.- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm sure they already have sex ed by then, my neice had it before she was 7.
Also, they knew it was wrong, and they did it anyway. Most classes discourage talking in class, these kids were having sex. If you honestly believe these kids didn't know it was wrong you should get checked. Expulsion: Sure. Don't ***** during class. Does that REALLY have to be school policy nowadays? - kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6benny sorry but you're an idiot..
Of course they were wrong, and knew it was wrong, but they are still 11, and at that age. You just find out that your dick gets hard when seeing naked women.. And that if you rub it the right way it feels good.
Adults often forget how akward that age tends to be.. They aren't kids anymore they enter adolescence at that age. Little girls first start having their periods from ages 8-12.. BOys are producing sperm at that age. The clock starts, and they somehow discover sex the wrong way, and its usually through a friend.
I'm sorry but at that age oyu don't understand the reprecussions of having sex. Except for getting kicked out of school. I'm sorry but that's not a real reprecussion. You can just switch districts. GEtting pregnant, STDs, and other stuff. Sex is a big deal they can know that theya re having sex and its wrong, but I doubt they knew hwy its worng, and I Doubt they know anything about STDs...
For the love of god I hope they were using condoms atleast.
