Report: Sixth graders have sex during shop class WITH teacher present

wthr.com — During school hours in a classroom with an experienced teacher present, two sixth graders completed the act of intercourse...at least ten students were witnesses, some as "look-outs" to prevent discovery. No disciplinary actions were taken against the teacher. All teachers were told to keep quiet. School officials confirmed the event.

    Associate Superintendent Jeff Swensson told Eyewitness News off camera the teacher didn't know what was going on because another student acted as a "look-out." But once the teacher discovered the behavior, immediate action was taken. Swensson says the students involved were recommended for expulsion. But he did not say whether the board followed that recommendation.


    Looks like they handled the issue. Don't see what the big deal is now? Does everything have to be published in the news? Can't some things be dealt with and be over? The school did nothing wrong.

What good would expelling those students do? Suspend them, separate them, discipline them, give 'em some therapy... but dont expell them.       #1 - If I was one of the kids having sex, I wouldnt brag. Probably took them 2 minutes, being all scared and what not. Not a bragging point.
      #2 - Have you seen most of the people in shop? Not all, but most are 300lbs+ and look like they're face caught on fire and someone tried to put it out with a shovel.

However, the parents of the 13 or more students (2 participants, at least 10 witnesses, and 1 lookout) involved certainly needed to know. If you read the article you will see the teachers were told to keep quiet, and that the "Associate Superintendent Jeff Swensson confirmed it's true. It's been kept under wraps since November." That's an admitted cover-up. It is newsworthy.

It's ridiculous that parents are simultainiously blaming schools for not doing enough to raise their kids for them, but in a situation like this, we're supposed to be outraged that the school took care of it? No. Good job to the teacher, and good job to the school board. They should stick up for themselves.

      Add to that, the article did say that there were other kids acting as lookouts. Which implies that the kids weren't exactly in plain sight. It's pointless to have a lookout if the person you're hiding from can clearly see you. "Johnny, Susan? Why are you in the same seat? Oh! Carry on." I doubt it.

Tell me you've not known of or heard of someone having sex at school personally. If not, you went to a really lame school. 6th grade is a little young. Just a few weeks ago, a cook in the kitchen at the school where I work physically grabbed a third grade kid and dragged him across the cafeteria by the hood on his coat, the kid was choking and gagging because his coat was zipped up. I was told NOT to call the police when I pulled out my cell phone to dial 911 and inform the police that an ASSAULT was occurring. So far, there hasn't even been an investigation and that guy is still working in the kitchen.

The guy is a cook, a teacher may have to be PC about their punishments (or the complete lack of rather.)       Whatever... If the kids are having sex in 6th grade, and are letting friends watch & look out for them, my guess is that their destiny's already pretty much decided.

      Blame the parents that raised them (or more to the point, who didn't raise them right to start with), not the schools that got stuck with them! Until you get your know-it-all ass in their and start teaching & changing the youth of today, you have no right to slam those who you disagree with. If I was a principal, I'd also be suggesting suspension or expulsion.

      You can be assured that this wasn't their first time, and it's not likely to be their last... Would you want your 6th grader to be the next lookout for them, or perhaps their next sexual partner?

I've known a few cases of kids being expelled for the rest of the year but the grades they had gotten thus far were good enough to make them barely pass), but they're probably not going to see it that way. They're just going to see it as a get out of school for the rest of the year free card. So then they'd have their days free to have sex without a teacher watching.

      I never really understood how suspension or expulsion were punishments. Do something bad enough and you get some vacation days... what lesson is that suppose to teach someone?

      I won't blame parents, because sometimes it's not their fault. Sure, a few times it is, but in a majority of the worst cases (like this) it's not as much the case.

      I won't blame the school, because the teacher fought for expulsion, and the principal decided not to give it to them... that's the best thing. I think those kids, honestly, deserve to die. I'm sick and tired of these smart-ass kids.

      I was a quick learner... I mean, my first girlfriend, when I was 6 years old, was 9 years old, and when we talked on the phone, pretty much the entire conversation was about having sex after we were married. As little kids, just to think we were "slick", we called it sand instead of sex. I mean, it's certainly not cute. Looking back at it, I'm astounded my mom didn't beat my ass for it. But kids *****? Their parents should douse them in kerosene and burn them alive.

      But that's just my opinion. Holds no water :-D

      Note that we don't know if the kids were expelled. This is just one snapshot of a process, and it is possible to get the wrong idea very easily.

Had these kids had proper sex-ed, they would understand that sex is reserved for a strong relationship and done in private and that failure to meet those responsibilities results in significant repercussions.

My area has had some problems with middle school-aged students performing various sex acts on one another, drug and alcohol use, violence, and other sketchy behavior. I have a strong feeling that these kids get up to even worse things in their own homes, right behind their parents' backs or, more likely, when their parents leave them home alone for any period of time. If these children are getting into these sorts of situations it is because they are choosing to do so on their own. Parents will rise up against the school system when they ought to be asking themselves what they are doing at home, as parents, to help stop this sort of thing.

I remember several occasions of kids having sexual contact during class when I was in middle school 20 years ago. 13-year olds came to school drunk and got high in the bathrooms. And it was a relatively "good" school.
    • smilesofkarli, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2it's just scary to see what kids do when they should be learning. i remember freaking out when the kids on my bus in eighth grade, on a coach bus to a college basketball game as a field trip, the kids on my bus were practicing prostitution with the teacher in the front of the bus and completely unknowing. i didn't do anything and just ignored it, but freaked out if i were to get in trouble. my best friends got suspended for kissing, flashing, and other stuff to each other for money. it was crazy and no one else knew about it. it's just these kinds of things that make you wonder what the hell propels kids to do these kids of activities.

Not going to paint a picture but it was definitely there... anyone who acts like this never happened much before the current generation of kids is either lying or doesn't know what they're talking about.

      Sure, a lot of people wait for college and are not exposed to this stuff because of their friends (or lack therof) and protective parents, but there are many early starters. It has always been this way.

      HS was a different story, all boys high school. But that's where the hijinks really took off. About once a year you'd notice that two students would be missing from various classes. When they first went missing the rumor mill started that they were caught blowing each other, etc. Never saw any of this stuff take place mind you so I think it was all myth.

Went to another public school that was k-6 but individual classrooms were k, 1-3 and 4-6 so after kindergarten you had the same teachers for 3 years. Then it would have been on to a 7-12 school but I moved to a district that was k-6 then 7-8 then a freshman building then High school was 10-12. Another are public school district near by that's broken up k->1-4->5-6->7-8->9->10-12

Also I was to tell them they'd have 5 minutes or someone would be down to get them. It was because the students had been caught going to closets and bathrooms and getting and receiving blow jobs. I was told it was a game the students had going to see who could get the most while at school. While I don't know if that part was true I was there when two 7th graders were caught in the women's restroom having sex. That last one was at a catholic school.

      I substitute almost every day and although I've never been warned I try to never have 2 students out of the room at the same time. Also I have been discussiing a topic or using the overhead with the lights off I know some have had cell phone out text messaging, but then again they do that in the middle of class when I'm looking right at them. I do correct this when I see it, but there are time where I never know or find out second hand.

      I never had any freedom like that in school. Bathroom / Hall pases, wearing your id at all times, not getting to socialize in class, ect. Lucky kids.

      As a parent of a 12 year old daughter, I have two problems with your logic. One, How do these kids "benefit" if their 5 minutes of fme happens to, oh...produce a child? C'mon. They were getting it on in a classroom, and I'm pretty sure they weren't thinking about being 'safe' outside getting caught. And two, the last time I checked, a 12 year old can't 'consent' legally to anything, so that arguement is moot. It'll be interesting to see how the parents react, though. I'm sure one set or the other will scream injustice...

    Secondly, they shouldn't expel kids for doing something that's natural. What they need is to be educated about sex. Sixth grade is the perfect time, IMO.

    Thirdly, if you're witness to two boys having anal sex in shop class, you may want to consider changing your course to something like home economics.

      Adults often forget how akward that age tends to be.. They aren't kids anymore they enter adolescence at that age. Little girls first start having their periods from ages 8-12..       I'm sorry but at that age oyu don't understand the reprecussions of having sex. Except for getting kicked out of school. I'm sorry but that's not a real reprecussion. You can just switch districts. GEtting pregnant, STDs, and other stuff. Sex is a big deal they can know that theya re having sex and its wrong, but I doubt they knew hwy its worng, and I Doubt they know anything about STDs...

      For the love of god I hope they were using condoms atleast.
