- volume909, on 04/29/2009, -1/+8The Sri Lankan government is doing exactly that. "Sweeping" as you call it without any care for the civilians.
- nullcodes, on 04/29/2009, -2/+8Let's be clear, here. The LTTE is a terrorist organization.
They have carried out the most suicide bombings in the world.
They have targeted civilians. They \invented the suicide belt. They have carried out more suicide bombings that Al Qaeda, Hamas, and the PLO put together (hundreds).
They assasinated the Prime Minister of India Rajiv Ghandi along with some civilians via a suicide bombing in 1993.
Aside from suicide bombings of buses and trains, another of their favorite tactics is raiding Sinhalese or Muslim villages and torturing + hacking the villagers to death in a very gruesome manner possible.
They are responsible for numerous bus bombings where only civilians and students were murdered.
They have blown up civilian airliners.
In spite of their ridiculous claim, they do not represent the all the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. Most Tamils live in harmony with Sinhalese in the Western and Central provinces. LTTE is fighting to create a mono-ethnic state in the North East ruled by their psychopathic leader.
In addition to any Sinhalese, the LTTE terrorists also ordered all Muslims to leave cities they overran with only $5 in hand, all other money and property was confiscated from them.
They got their start by assassinating a Tamil mayor. In being defeated they are holding numerous civilian hostages and hiding amongst them. Civilians risking their lives to escape from the LTTE.
In 2005, among the many Tamils they assassinated included the popular foreign minister of Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka government is currently de-mining the LTTE held territories and are letting civilians back to their homes already.
The Sri Lanka government is facilitating bi-weekly Red Cross trips into the dwindling LTTE territory even though most of the recipients of the aid are LTTE fighters. - QEDemon, on 04/29/2009, -10/+16The LTTE is a really ***** up organization. They invented the suicide belt, pioneered suicide bombing, and continue to use child soldiers in combat.
- sjinadasa, on 04/29/2009, -5/+11Guys, you haven't seen anything of these crimes against the civilians committed by the LTTE (the terrorist organization).. the people they claim to be fighting for. Just last week, three suicide bombers exploded themselves in midst of the civilians when they started escaping into the government areas, killing at least 20 people including several children. My bro-in-law is stationed there, and according to him, it was hell on earth. The funny thing is so many of those self titled 'freedom fighters' too came to the government areas with the civilians, and the MI has identified over 2000 of them.
Please do not believe the propaganda spread by the diaspora and the ever so lovely, rebel hugging BBC in your countries. If our army actually committed those hideous acts the diaspora are accusing us of, this war would've been over last year. The army has lost so many great people trying to destroy the LTTE while saving the civilians and it IS a crime to undermine their sacrifices.
If you really want to help these poor people, you could send in donations to your nearest Sri Lankan Embassy or High Commission or even the UN aid agencies. We are trying our best to cope with this situation, and as you can probably see, its not easy screening, processing, feeding and providing the basic needs for a sudden exodus of more than 100,000 people, and we would happily accept any kind of assistance we could get.
If you are interested about the resettlement procedure we are to follow with the refugees, it would go like this - First the conflict zones would be swept for rebel hideouts and pockets to eliminate them, then the mine clearing etc. would begin, it is only after then that the actual resettlement would begin and every single refugee would get their basic needs provided to them free of charge by the government in their home towns. So if anyone is asking why we are keeping these people in IDP camps, it is because we can't let civilians wander around in heavily mined, and dangerous areas.
If you read this, thank you for your time and I hope you would contribute to this effort.
Thank You

- SonicBoom1000, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5It's a shame that this conflict is barely covered in the press. Ms. California and her opinion on gay marriage has had more coverage in the US media.

- budbud83, on 04/29/2009, -2/+6I am a Sri Lankan citizen that recently moved to Canada, and I can tell you all with 100% certainty that the LTTE nor the Sri Lankan government gives a damn about anybody except lining their pockets with blood money or quenching their thirst for martidem. And I know what I'm talking about, because of this conflict, my entire family from my father's side have left Sri Lanka for other countries.
All the fighting have left nothing to fight for. Death, destruction and tears are the only things left. - GrammerPants, on 04/29/2009, -3/+6From my understanding the problem is a little more complicated then that.
- inactive, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3<FEED ME A KITTEN>
- DeadManWalking, on 04/29/2009, -2/+5Looks like the apologists are out in force here.
It doesn't matter what side of the issue you're on - what's happening there is unacceptable and both sides are to blame for what's happened. What's even more worrying is that nobody really wants to lift a finger to stop this. The Sri Lankan government won't even allow aid agencies or media into the no fire zone. If they have nothing to hide this shouldn't be an issue. - slyzxx, on 04/29/2009, -1/+4This is sick and ***** sadistic on how these guys on both sides decide to fight regardless of the issue and people who suffer are innocent. People loosing loved ones, homes and have to suffer like that is despicable. I`ve written to my government asking to help the refugees of Sri Lanka
- sodaman300, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3Way to be super-insensitive, diggers.
- nullcodes, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3Don't compare LTTE to ANC .. that's ridiculous! Do you realize that the LTTE carried out HUNDREDS of suicide bombings and village massacres of civilians?
How many villages did the ANC go into and massacre women and children (including babies) in? How many civilian busses did they bomb? How many civilian airplanes did they blow up?
The LTTE has done all of that MANY TIMES, the ANC has done NONE of that.
The largest ANC bombing .. the Church Street bombing .. was not a suicide bombing .. and it DID NOT TARGET CIVILIANS. Also, the number of people killed was 19. The LTTE would consider that a laughable amount of casualties. The LTTE used to carry out multiple bombings of buses and trains with FAR MORE casualties many times a year. - deathmatch, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2orientalism
- militaryminds, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2#16 is REALLY powerful
- sjinadasa, on 04/29/2009, -1/+3Right, propaganda... So you, living comfortably in Ca, thousands of miles away from the country this is taking place in knows more than a person who had to endure this ***** every ***** day for the last 20 years ? I like your irrefutable logic there..
- Foskey, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2Wars and conflicts alike should be fought in place where minimum collateral damage (civilian casualties) could possibly take place.
A true shame that, that can not be the rule.
This angers me and makes me sad at the same time. - DeadManWalking, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2Let me get this right - you want me to get my facts from an ultra-nationalist pro-Sri Lankan government website that not too long ago ran an article by one "Malin Abeyatunge" (remember that name because this guy writes some truly disgusting filth) proclaiming that the Sri Lankan government should "hang public opinion" and turn the "No Fire Zone" (where tens of thousands of displaced refugees are cowering in tents) into a "Now Fire Zone" saying that the loss of those tens of thousands of civillian lives was a fair price to pay for the death of what the Government's own press releases say are less than 1,000 remaining "Tamil Tigers."
Right. - budbud83, on 04/29/2009, -2/+4Exactly my point, the government of Sri Lanka nor the LTTE cares one bit about civilians. Everybody in power has their own agenda. The best us Sri Lankans living abroad can do is help the rest of our friends and families get out of there.
Honestly, I have lost all hope, because after 30 years of conflict it is amazing how people think that this problem can be solved by violence. Nobody have learned anything. - nullcodes, on 04/29/2009, -2/+4You idiot, the Tamils don't want to be ruled by a psychopath LTTE leader. The LTTE targets CIVILIANS, they can't face the Army. Their tactics is suicide bombings of civilians, raiding of villages, and assassinations.
Furthermore, the North East had people from other ethnic groups but the LTTE expelled them a decade or two ago. LTTE doesn't own the North East .. it belongs to all Sri Lankans.
The problem is being solved. Central to any solutiobn is the elimination of LTTE.
No LTTE, no problem. - nullcodes, on 04/29/2009, -2/+4Foreign media was allowed in the war zone earlier this week. Why doesn't the LTTE allow media in their occupied area? Why is the only outlet for LTTE propaganda photos only their front organization websites?
Furthermore the Red Cross has been going into the LTTE occupied areas on the ship MV Green Ocean every two days to deliver food and medical supplies as well as evacuate injured hostages.
Also, there are numerous NGOs operating in the IDP refugeee camps. Furthermore a lot of refugees who have relatives in the South have gone to stay with them or those with family who can't accomodate them can come visit them.
Why don't you actually find out stuff from proper new sources or actual Sri Lankans LIVING there. - nullcodes, on 04/29/2009, -4/+6The Tamil "diaspora" living in the West knows nothing about the LTTE organization in Sri Lanka. It's like how people of Irish descent living outside Ireland supported the IRA without knowing they are terrorists that are actually unpopular within Northern Ireland even among Catholics.
Also, the Tamil diaspora haven't lifted a finger to help the Sri Lankan Tamils who need their help with stuff like economic development and education. Why aren't they investing in and helping the Tamils?
The LTTE is shooting civilians, that's what's going on. There is NO OTHER WAY to end the conflict other than eliminating the LTTE and freeing the civilians. This conflict has gone on 30 years and needs to end. The LTTE is responsible for all civilian casualties. They are down to 5 square kilometers of land and are still holding women and children hostages. They are refusing to surrender or let the civilians go.
My question to the LTTE supporters is:
Why don't they surrender and let the civilians go? Why are they refusing to surrender and why are they holding civilians as hostages .. it is nothing but cowardice. LTTE started by killing a Tamil, and they will go to their end by killing Tamils.
The LTTE is the biggest enemy of the Tamil people. - pkz382, on 04/29/2009, -1/+3What people should be asking is why the Sri Lankan government is not allowing media agencies and NGOs into these areas.
Also, the very valid grievances of the Tamil people which started this conflict to begin with are not being addressed - so where is the long term solution? - nullcodes, on 04/29/2009, -2/+3About the "valid greivances" that is being addressed and will be addressed more. Look who is the chief minister of the Eastern province ? A Tamil, a former LTTE even.
Tamils in the Sri Lankan government already have prominent lead roles in rebuilding the formerly LTTE occupied areas.
There will probably be a federal type solution implemented .. but whatever it is .. the North and East will definitely have more autonomy.
The LTTE needs to be eliminated before other solutions can be discussed. - olie_baba, on 04/29/2009, -3/+4I didn't know so many people of the Sri Lanka government were on digg...

- iizh, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1Uh.. putting a few token minorities in some government spots doesn't mean *****. I'm afraid no one buys it in the rest of the world.
- redstar1949, on 04/29/2009, -4/+5The Tamil people are righteously fighting for liberation from US imperialism, and every oppressed people have the right to self-determination. Whatever bad tactics the Tamil Tigers may have employed, that isn't the essence of who they are.
- cowbilly, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1yeah that site rules except for the black box at the bottom of every image. I want to steal all their *****
- ShiftyBizniss, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1agreed.. however, do we have to reiterate this every time a gallery is posted?
- d17182, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1"conflicting stories are the norm, with LTTE representatives claiming the ethnic Tamil civilians are staying willingly, fearful of government forces, and the Sri Lankan government claiming the civilians are being held against their will by the LTTE"
Here's another possibility: All the non-governmental and non-LTTE Sri Lankan citizens are normal people just like me and you: not wanting to be around either warring side. - olie_baba, on 04/29/2009, -1/+2Nelson Mandela's party that fought apartheid, won in part by using terrorist tactics. Oppression leads to extreme behaviors on both sides.
- DeadManWalking, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1SPUR - The Society for Peace, Unity and Human Rights for Sri Lanka. Orwell would be proud. These people are nothing but hate and filth mongers. Any rational person viewing the situation unfolding in Sri Lanka can see despicable acts committed by both sides. SPUR, hiding behind this name are nothing but apologists who attempt to whitewash all the government's atrocities while spreading hate. They even go as far to call the worldwide Tamil Diaspora criminals and terrorist supporters to further their agenda and marginalise any diaspora Tamil that would speak out against their beloved government.
Furthermore, this almost 100% exclusively Sinhalese group put out statements and press releases "speaking for the Tamil people" as if they have any right to do so.
When you visit the pro-tiger websites you know exactly whose views you are reading (hint: look for the word tamil in the title). Furthermore the quality of journalism and reportage far exceed anything that SPUR's websites, columns and editorials could hope to aspire to.
Time to start getting some information out there about this well funded, well organised lobby group and expose them for the shills they are. - iizh, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1nullcodes
