Razor-sharp concertina wire installed at U.S.-Mexico border
latimes.com — The U.S. says its use on an eventual 5-mile stretch of existing fence is to protect agents. But critics say it disregards immigrants' safety.

To the "illegal immigrant safety" argument, read the article. "Since the first concertina wire went up, only one immigrant has been injured by it, officials said. He got tangled up in the wire and was treated for minor injuries and returned to Mexico, officials said." - blackjack75, on 05/17/2008, -10/+4Sure. If barriers don't solve the problem, then build walls. And if it doesn't work then add crocodiles with razor-sharp teeth and a lake of fire!
... or maybe one could concentrate the efforts on making life in Mexico easier. Just an idea.
For a country that was based entirely on immigration (indian massacre aside) I think the U.S. is regressing. The new migrants want the exact same thing as the old ones did. It's a bit easy to day "but now it's full, sorry".
Give others the chance your ancestors had and they'll help keep your country at the top.- Troika37, on 05/17/2008, -2/+8My ancestors came here through Ellis Island. I would like nothing more than other immigrants to utilize the proper way to come here.
As a side note - why is it the responsibility of the United States to ensure life in Mexico is better? - edstate, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6Well, for one thing the ablest working-age men and women fleeing the country in droves doesn't bode well for Mexico's future. And I agree... although it's not the "US's responsibility" to "fix" Mexico (Lord knows we need another nation-building assignment), we should use all political means to help them help themselves. And that includes not allowing their entire workforce to come here and play indentured servants to our cheating businesses and corporations.
- vault, on 05/18/2008, -1/+3In your mind, there's no difference between legal and illegal immigration? We should just have open borders, no regulation at all, and let anyone who wants come in?

- bincoder, on 05/17/2008, -4/+7Good. I have enough intelligence to know not to climb a razorwire fence, french kiss a light socket, walk hundreds of miles through the desert in mid summer while its 114 degrees on and on. If anyone is stupid enough to go right ahead and do it anyway, that is evolution at work. Let them hurt themselves. Oh and when, precisely, can we have permission from all the other countries on earth to determine when the US has been populated? When the entire thing collapses of its own weight? When there is not one square foot of useful land that doesn't have a house or car on it? The country was built on immigration, somewhat, also on 10 kids per couple. Thats how you get a population for a new country. Know what? Mission accomplished. Most do 1 or 2 kids now no need to keep priming the pump. Time to take a population building break and find something else to do, like energy production.

- JimmySpaza, on 05/18/2008, -5/+7Good. Now it's time to build a razor-sharp fence along the ENTIRE border...and kick out every illegal immigrant. Maybe even make Mexico pay back all the government benefits that their citizens got while here illegally.
- DaDrake, on 05/18/2008, -2/+5Great .... unless your a complete idiot... you know what that wire is going to do when you cross it. The illegal immigrants are making a CONSCIOUS decision to cross that wire. If they get hurt in the process, so be it.... but more must be done to curve illegal immigration. Hospitals are closing and there is a huge burdon on our education system because of this uncheck flow of immigration. We need people to come in the legal way so we can accept hard working people and not criminals trying to evade the police in foreign countries.
- n0gnuz, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1'The U.S. says its use on an eventual 5-mile stretch of existing fence is to protect agents. But critics say it disregards immigrants' safety.' Correction: Disregards ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS' safety. Anyone coming here legally can safely walk through the gate.
