- Barackalypse, on 01/05/2009, -16/+74Why doesn't he just offer everyone in the Clinton administration their old jobs back and be done with it? I've lost track of how many Clinton cabinet members he's appointed, and now he adds Leon Panetta to the list (why he picked him to head the CIA instead of something he might actually be qualified to do, I'll never know). Also, yes, I know Leon's old job was Chief of Staff.
- TruckStuff, on 01/06/2009, -8/+53Does it really seem like a good idea to put a guy in charge of intelligence who has never had anything remotely to do with it? Regardless of how you feel about it, we are still conducting an ongoing war with active intelligence ops. Do we really want all of that to be headed by a guy who doesn't have the first clue how to even get to the office?
- santiago1, on 01/06/2009, -3/+40 I was hoping rather it was Leon from "the Professional"....
- Duffalpha, on 01/05/2009, -5/+36This guy doesn't look nearly enough like a bad guy from a Bourne movie to impress me.
- geekee, on 01/05/2009, -25/+53I see he's continuing the W. tradition of appointing unqualified people to important govt. jobs.
- mikbunn, on 01/06/2009, -1/+28No worries, he's a professional.

ORLY - jetboyterp, on 01/06/2009, -22/+46Oh, goody..."Hopey-Changey" picks another Clinton lackey, with no experience, to head the CIA.
Wake me up in four years. - borez, on 01/06/2009, -6/+27OK tell me, is this the Obama administration, or the Clinton administration? The lines seem to have blurred somewhat.
- duffahtolla, on 01/06/2009, -0/+20"Panetta chose to enforce civil rights and equal education laws, even under political pressure not to from then-president Nixon"
Sounds like a stand up guy. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+21Due to work affiliations, I've met Mr. Panetta a couple times and have heard him speak on many more occasions. He's a damned sharp guy and I think he'll actually make a really good CIA director, mainly because he's much more into the diplomatic side of things (and is rather conservative fiscally).
(Disclosure: I'm a conservative-leaning Libertarian and former lifelong member of the GOP. Panetta much more moderate than a lot of Democrats. In fact, he sits on the board of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.) - pintomp3, on 01/06/2009, -4/+22Looks like Obama is going for judgment over experience. Panetta's heart seems to be in the right place:
According to the latest polls, two-thirds of the American public believes that torturing suspected terrorists to gain important information is justified in some circumstances. How did we transform from champions of human dignity and individual rights into a nation of armchair torturers? One word: fear.
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2008/080 ...
It would be refreshing to have someone in there who is against torture. - Doctoxicated, on 01/05/2009, -6/+23*****, I swore it was going to be Bobby Flay.... wait we are talking about the Culinary Institute of America right?
- bluesman3535, on 01/06/2009, -5/+21John Loftis might have been a better pick, but one look at the people this appointment is angering tells me it's a smart move. They need an outsider to re-evaluate this agency, not another sheep from within it.
- PopcornDave, on 01/05/2009, -4/+20Including Bill? He's already got Hillary there.
I'm still wondering why Panetta for this as well. According to Wikipedia, he's a lawyer with 2 years of military service but no apparent foreign service experience. I guess time will tell. - kemp34, on 01/06/2009, -3/+18Yeah, we need more cocaine importers in the CIA!
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+15http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Panetta
- woodrow8292, on 01/06/2009, -6/+19Change........
- TheUngod, on 01/06/2009, -1/+11Yeah, but his last name makes me want to beat him until candy comes out
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -12/+22This is a stupid pick.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -8/+17I did not realize that CIA Director was one of those "no experience necessary" jobs.
- Pixelante, on 01/06/2009, -8/+17You did fall for it, didn't you.
- borez, on 01/06/2009, -0/+9I don't see this guy changing anything to be honest, he's got too much on his plate with the financial crisis. I like him too, but let's see.
- peabody624, on 01/06/2009, -0/+9Hahaha he looks the EXACT same
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -6/+14Why doesn't he just hand the presidency back over to Bill and be done with it..... sheesh, talk about change...
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+9The head of the CIA does not gather intelligence. He has lackeys to do that work. The Director of the CIA has to be able to manage a huge budget first off - and Pinneta has vast ecperience doing that. And he has to be able to assigne people to present un biased and non politicized intelligence information to the President. THAT is where the Busch administration FAILED. THAT is how we got in to Iraq - throuhg thte politicization of the Intelligence process.
- Chahrlie5, on 01/06/2009, -9/+17Seriously, of the thousands of experienced intelligence personnel in the United States this is the best he could do?
- MFoody, on 01/06/2009, -1/+8It’s worth noting that not only has it never been the case that the CIA Director must be a career intelligence professional, it’s also long been the case that past service as a White House Chief of Staff has been viewed as a wide-ranging qualification for future public office. Alexander Haig became Secretary of State. Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney both went on to serve as Secretary of Defense. James Baker become Secretary of Treasury and Secretary of State. There’s nothing unusual about the idea that service in that job qualifies people for senior national security positions. http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/archives/2009/01 ...
- jsg7, on 01/06/2009, -1/+8I'd like someone with more intelligence experience, too. But I'd assume that a guy who spend 3 years as White House chief of staff has to have a good bit of experience interacting with the CIA...
- kemp34, on 01/06/2009, -6/+13You are 100% correct.
- BossKey, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7> look at all these previous Obama-bots now questioning Obama
So doesn't that really mean you were wrong in assuming they were all Obama-bots? - TSK05, on 01/06/2009, -6/+13Hopefully America will still be here...
- woodrow8292, on 01/06/2009, -8/+15So who is being sworn in on Jan 21 Obama or Hillary? I am confused......I don't see to much change unless he just meant a change from the last 8 years back to the Clinton years.
- villainousT, on 01/06/2009, -6/+13I haven't been completely fond of every cabinet appointment Obama has made thus far; however, the Panetta choice makes no sense to me AT ALL. Perhaps Obama has his reasons but they're eluding me right now. Looks like a bad choice.
- diggdiggerid, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Read the Constitution one day and you'll know what the requirements of being President are. The Founders never intended for Senators to serve for life and they sure as hell didn't intend the President to be born and raised in DC politics.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -3/+9It's like Clinton Admin Musical Chairs. Same people, just different positions. I swear I wouldn't be surprised if he rehired Monica as his secretary.
- vbullinger, on 01/06/2009, -1/+7That's B.S. When George Bush Sr. was named head of the CIA back in the 70's, he said he had never been in the CIA until he was named the head of it. Turns out, that's bull crap. He'd been in the CIA for many years. I'm guessing Leon Panetta has been working with them for a long time, too.
Did you guys all know that Bob Barr was in the CIA for many years? More than he's let on? I've heard as many as 21! - mikbunn, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6We already had Janet Reno, why not Jean Reno?
- chipotlehero, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5Maybe he's so good at intelligence that we don't even know he's the best there ever was... eh probably not.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 01/06/2009, -5/+10The best part is where you make a mountain out of a mole hill..
- kigcoopa84, on 01/06/2009, -3/+8I think the CIA's job is to protect the US PEOPLE against ENEMIES. Not against the stock market and over fishing.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -3/+8see Leon? I *told* you to hang on to those pictures!!
- TheNik, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5And you do? Oh, of course you do! Sorry Mr. Director, sir!
- TKidd, on 01/06/2009, -4/+9I don't know that it did.
- mattbert, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6You've been watching too much "24". Torture doesn't work in the real world - http://www.military.com/news/article/exinterrogato ...
- bf01, on 01/06/2009, -4/+9Yeah, that'd be like appointing the Judges and Stewards Commissioner for the International Arabian Horse Association to head up the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
- diggsupport, on 01/06/2009, -2/+7that's because we think for ourselves.. we dont just defend the guy we voted for despite ignorant mistake after mistake a la bush supporters.
- airtac, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5Have you seen the CIA now?
He a Air Force 4 Star Gen. - kooredaan, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6I couldn't say this about Bush, but I can about Obama.
Very few digg commentators are as intelligent as he is...
Judge all you want, but if you were President your alcoholic neighbor Dave would be your VP and Chef at the same time. - norman619, on 01/06/2009, -5/+9Wow... you DO know what the CIA's job is right? It's not a nature conservation group. Prime fail you have there.
