- quirkopatra, on 05/23/2009, -19/+150This is why abortion should be legal.
- Razorfiend, on 05/23/2009, -10/+101FALCONNNN PUNCHHH!!
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -3/+63In Utah, the following restrictions on abortion were in effect as of January 2008:
* The parent of a minor must consent and be notified before an abortion is provided.
* A woman must receive state-directed counseling that includes information designed to discourage her from having an abortion and then wait 24 hours before the procedure is provided.
* Public funding is available for abortion only in cases of life endangerment, physical health, rape, incest or fetal abnormality.
As you can see, there is reasons why a teenager wouldn't want to or be able to get an abortion. This is what results. - ttam, on 05/23/2009, -25/+77Good job Christianity
- alais, on 05/23/2009, -5/+47"This is why abortion should be legal."
No, this is why kids need to be counseled, abortion already is legal. - inactive, on 05/23/2009, -2/+37So much for the "old fashion" way of just throwing her down the stairs.
- nharpe, on 05/23/2009, -2/+33hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. it also works when beauty pageant contestants get on the stage and call for world peace. all the wars suddenly stop.
- necuz, on 05/23/2009, -2/+33I firmly believe that we like doing /that/ just a little bit too much for abstinence to be even in the slightest realistic.
- carouselonmars, on 05/23/2009, -10/+37Christianity: One woman's lie about having an affair that got seriously out of hand.
- pintomp3, on 05/23/2009, -0/+23Saying abstinence is the best way to avoid pregnancy is like saying the best way to avoid car accidents is never to get in a car. While it may be true, it's hardly realistic advice.
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -1/+23I laughed and then felt really, really bad. Damn you, Razorfiend.
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -2/+23this is what happens when people have poor sex - education and no access to proper help.
- jsynnott, on 05/23/2009, -3/+20I read that title wrong. I thought there was some sort of annual community race held, where the fastest person to miscarry wins.
- mazaj423, on 05/23/2009, -2/+19Yeah because abstinence only education worked so well for Bristol Palin. Teach kids proper use of birth control instead. That way the ones who want to and do practice abstinence will be ok plus the the kids who don't wait will be safe also.
- mazaj423, on 05/23/2009, -0/+17Utah doesn't allow abortions for minors with out parental authorization.
- Atario, on 05/23/2009, -8/+22Uh, guys? I'm pretty sure abortions are available even in the deep red state of Utah.
- FattyAcidTrip, on 05/23/2009, -3/+17Beat me to it.
- kamisama, on 05/23/2009, -1/+14Yeah abstinence will work, in what world are you living ?
- sirjoebob, on 05/23/2009, -0/+13adoption is a good option except our government makes it so hard and expensive that our citizens are adopting babies from china and russia instead of America. Adoption should be free since you are relieving the state of a burden.
- Llanowar, on 05/23/2009, -2/+14And you honestly think those bible thumpers are so moral?
And, are you thinking your country will prosper if you have millions more kids to put into foster care each year? (cause that is what would happen)
Yes, people should be more careful what they do.
Yes, people are sometimes too easy with abortion.
But that shouldn't take your right away.
And please stop calling it murder/killing. Most abortions are done at a time the embryo isn't even capable of life. - inactive, on 05/23/2009, -2/+14HOW IS BABBY BORTED?
- RainyDayNinja, on 05/23/2009, -6/+17Aren't you glad that in this country, women can do what they want with their own body?
- NikoKun, on 05/23/2009, -4/+15lol @ the morons who missed the point.
Doesn't matter if it's currently legal. The point is, if it was made illegal this sort of thing would become FAR more common.
So do you really want this to become MORE common? Because that's what criminalizing Abortion would do. -_-
Doesn't get much more solid fact than that. - rolf, on 05/23/2009, -1/+12If the girl asked for it explicitly and it was clear he would have stopped at any time she asked (basically under her control)... she should be given a sentence equal to or greater than the man. I'm sorry, but it's just sexism otherwise.
- KeseChartier, on 05/23/2009, -2/+13Isn't Utah primarily Mormon?
- VitriolAndAngst, on 05/23/2009, -1/+11I guess a lot of people don't remember WHY we ended the prohibition on abortion.
The smug people who don't have the problem can sit in judgement -- but this is what a desperate girl does to try and regain her future. Now she has to turn to crime. - inactive, on 05/23/2009, -0/+10But true.
- FirstOne1, on 05/23/2009, -4/+13the ***** up mother should get an equal punishment
- sirjoebob, on 05/23/2009, -1/+10Wow... that is crazy. Utah FTL.
- Gloogle, on 05/23/2009, -5/+14your obsolete, and you helped ***** up the world! is time for our generation to rule!
- ripple123, on 05/23/2009, -4/+12so it seems youd rather see the pregnant mother dead before you see your precious fetus dead. and for caring about a fetus over a real human, alive and here and now, you can go get *****.
- Dustin00, on 05/23/2009, -2/+10But for a 17 year old, she faces parental consent laws.
- Howitzer86, on 05/23/2009, -1/+9So you would like it if your government made laws based on religious beliefs? Religion is naturally oppressive, it has no rightful place in the politics of a free country.
If you were a judge in this case, how would you charge the man and this girl? Man slaughter? Murder? How does this help anyone if a girl is forced to have a child? If she's silly enough to ask to get beaten, can you trust that she can take care of the child? Do you want another child to live through foster care? What about rape victims? Utah allows abortions in that case - wouldn't you? If so, then that's compromise. In my church - before I left it - we were told that compromise against the Word of God is a sin. Though I don't know where you'd find the verse against abortion in the bible... so where does this come from? - theaceoffire, on 05/23/2009, -2/+10Or adoption. You know, give a couple who can't have a child a chance to raise one.
- bsmang, on 05/23/2009, -0/+7But that only works if you stick to it, and nobody does that except for maybe people who don't have a choice...
- bobbi21, on 05/23/2009, -1/+8Utah sucks. but the counseling is a good idea in general. The way you phrase it (and the way its probably practiced) is very anti-abortion but counseling about the pros and cons is a good thing. Abortion is a big issue and ppl need time to think about it.
And I support public funding for abortion about as much as I support public health care in general so I understand their position on that since I doubt utah is for universal health care. Hopefully one day america will learn - mrno, on 05/23/2009, -1/+8This is ***** nuts. This is why Pro-Choice is important.
- alais, on 05/23/2009, -5/+12"religious" doesn't think this is just fine. Get real and stop equating the masses with ignorant individuals, we might mistake you for one.
- Catsmacking, on 05/23/2009, -0/+6It is legal but there are many states that make it harder to perform abortions and some states that do not have adequate access to facilities. I believe Utah forces you to go into counseling in person and then wait 24 hours before getting it done and she would have had to tell one of her parents. Utah is also the only state that doesn't have a mechanism for judicially bypassing the notification of parents requirement.
Granted the real reason states don't place tons of restrictions on abortion is because of Casey v. Planned Parenthood which says states can't place an undue burden on women seeking abortion. But again, that is circumvented in many cases by not having facilities. And a young person who obviously didn't want to tell her parents she wanted it done did something stupid and drastic. Shocker. - bsmang, on 05/23/2009, -1/+7I think this story is rotten for sure, but nowhere near as bad as that one the other day about the guy who ate his 4-year-old son's eyeballs out. That one was *so much worse* that it's not even comparable.
- SweetChinMusic, on 05/23/2009, -1/+7SAD BUT TRUUUUEEEEE
HEEYY (HEY),
I'M YOUR LIFE,
I'M THE ONE WHO TAKES YOU THERE. - beyondu, on 05/23/2009, -0/+6This is what happens when moms and dads decide that teaching children about safe sex is evil. Then if the kid does have sex and get pregnant, they can't possibly tell their parents, because what would everyone else at church say..... scandalous, because we know people who go to church never do anything wrong ;)
- Nairebis, on 05/23/2009, -5/+11And to a story about some idiot mom putting her baby in a trashcan, I could say, "This is why infanticide should be legal. Let a medical doctor put down babies who aren't wanted humanely."
- faskippy, on 05/23/2009, -1/+7No, it's just you.
- Junkyarddawg, on 05/23/2009, -0/+6What happens when you restrict access to legal abortions and cut down on sex ed in school?
This. This happens. - mattus, on 05/23/2009, -1/+7That's mor(m)onic.
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -5/+10How many people did god kill in that fictitious book of yours?
how many did satan?
who's side are you on again?! - hatdrop, on 05/23/2009, -0/+5@ pross182
so you think what that girl went through was less traumatizing than an abortion?! last time i checked the public does not fund abortions, that only says in those specific cases described the public will fund that abortion.
are you really that thick headed? she decided to get a beating because she most likely did not want to talk to her parents. while those rules may sound perfectly acceptable to you, they only work for people in PERFECT situations.
minors SHOULD consult the parent about an abortion, but they should NOT REQUIRE permission. the world is not a perfect place, there are abusive parents, parents that RAPE their own kids, the majority of child molestations occur from close family relatives or friends. it's absolutely ridiculous to think that all parents are shinning beacons of example by the fact of how many teenage pregnancies occur in the first place. it's equally ridiculous to believe the child can always come to a parental figure and expect them to have their best interests in mind. - pross182, on 05/23/2009, -1/+6We are no more "immoral" today than we were 20, 30, 100 years ago. The difference today is that it's broadcast all over the world immediately through mediums such as the t.v. and internet so it just seems worse.
You can say what you want about this case, that he only did what she asked, or that abortion is wrong blah blah blah but what the bottom line is everyone in this case forgot the ***** word NO!
"NO I'm not going to punch you till you misscarry what the ***** is wrong with you? Go home to your family"
"No I don't want to have unprotected sex with you because I might get pregnant then as some guy to beat the ***** out of me so I miscarry then I'll be all over digg.com"
"NO you can't stay out past 9, you have homework to do kid. Get back to your desk, do your school work and get off your ***** back!"
Because in the end ***** like this is always the parents fault to some degree. How the ***** does your 17 year old daughter get pregnant in the first place? I'll tell you how, you let her stay up till 9 then pushed that till 10, you relaxed your rules about going out with friends alone.
Well guess the ***** what! Just because they're 17 doesn't mean you can just let them go out into the world. Because they still need guidance. Just because they aren't 13 anymore doesn't mean they don't need you to lay down the law and force them to do what they need to do. They're still learning. Just because they're 16 and have boobs and pubes doesn't mean they're adults and have the intelligence and experience to act right. Which is why we don't let kids drink till they're 18,19,20,21 in different places. Treat them like kids until they're done High School so they aren't drunks, drug addicts, or pregnant then send them off to college. While they live with you they're your responsibility and everything they do is because you did/didn't do something that you should have.
Well that's my rant - Kugelblitze, on 05/23/2009, -0/+5Sirjoebob, I couldn't agree with you more. There are so many loving parents and families out there that want to adopt, but federal laws have made it far too difficult. We really need adoption reform to get kids into good homes.
