What a ***** child. - paintgrl, on 04/23/2009, -4/+350Uh seems like regular cop behavior to me. Officer Ramirez needs to be fired.
My favorite part was how the reporter was smiling, like from ***** story about a big rig to police harassment. BINGO! - BuckQJohnson, on 04/22/2009, -32/+356America is becoming a fascists state. What's weird to me is that why would he go after a news crew that you know have a camera feed to the studio and also has lawyers that deal with this situation and not what they can and cannot do. This cop was out of control and most likely will be "urged" to quit from the force.
- borez, on 04/23/2009, -2/+246Somebody got bullied at school and never quite got over it.
- ygeoff419, on 04/22/2009, -7/+219I smell a lawsuit :)
- o76923, on 04/23/2009, -4/+191When you read the comments on the original story (link at the end of article), there are so many people taking the side of the police. Its ridiculous that anybody thinks the officer was justified or that the reporter should be arrested. The guy was acting just like Joe Civilian, going after him because his eyes broadcast to other people is kinda ***** up.
If the officer was doing his god damned job, he should've been happy a cameraman was there. They were shooting a decently sized story from across a highway barrier (so they definitely weren't in the way). It was a great chance to get a 5 minute "everyday heroes" media fluff piece of a cop helping a man out of an overturned truck. Instead, we get an emotionally disturbed cop showing the world why to stay out of Texas (and the rest of the US). - inactive, on 04/23/2009, -2/+160knock, knock.
Who's there?
Gestapo.
Gestapo who?
VE VILL ASK THE QUESTIONS!!!!!! - itsabrandnewday, on 04/22/2009, -4/+151i wonder what was in the semi that the officer was so worried about....
- MiddleAmerica, on 04/23/2009, -21/+143Police are essentially fascists & its not just a few bad apples, its the majority of them.
They aren't well educated or trained, they don't take their oaths seriously, break the law often because they know they will be protected, generally think that they are better than everyone else, & often have power trip type ego issues.
I know police officers & study the crimes of our police. Unfortunately our law enforcement community is mostly made up of ex-jocks & ex-military who have never read the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, or have any higher education.
My advice, always do exactly as they tell you with no back talk & quickly.
If you get in trouble, find a lawyer that golfs with your judge.
- binaryecho, on 04/23/2009, -3/+115What in the hell is going on? Seems like everyday we are seeing videos of Police Officers from around the world going well beyond their authority and abusing private citizens.
- charlie6969, on 04/23/2009, -4/+111I wonder how many curious onlookers used their phones to tape, especially after seeing what this cop did the newsman?
Give it time; we will probably get more info soon.
None of us Citizens trust MSM or our Government anymore, for good reason.
Thank God everyone seems to think they are reporters. We might get a bunch of crap, usually, but sometimes we find some gold(truth). - ObeseSnake, on 04/23/2009, -2/+107Video recording and photography is not a crime.
- sHockz, on 04/23/2009, -7/+104915-521-9200
CALL THE EL PASO POLICE DEPT. COMPLAINT LINE AND SHOW HOW WE ARE NOT GOING TO STAND UP FOR THIS ***** ANYMORE!!!!! - wascheer, on 04/23/2009, -2/+99The First Amendment to the Constitution is not some kind of "suggestion" ... it's the law, and the highest law at that in the U.S. This police officer violated this man's rights as clearly as he possibly could have. The officer should have been arrested at the site, booked and released on bail ... PERIOD. What next ... confiscating firearms? Oh wait ... happened in New Orleans already. Maybe we can be secure in our right to peaceful assembly ... but they've already arrested peaceful G20 protesters as well as ticketed Tea-Party protesters.
I respect law enforcement, so let's respect the law and arrest this officer post-haste. - joshblufs, on 04/23/2009, -0/+91Whats going on is there a finally enough cameras in enough places so we finally see what has always gone on.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -22/+110Almost Nazi-like!
- compgeek, on 04/23/2009, -2/+76What a douche. Cop needs to be fired post haste. If he's acting like this he does NOT deserve to wear that uniform or that badge or have the responsibility that comes with them and police forces wonder why the general populous has no respect for them. It's cops like this that give them all a bad name
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -16/+82Sorry but I disagree with you.
"America has become a fascists state". - xEn1gma, on 04/23/2009, -3/+68A fat cop who got picked on in school for being a ***** and obese individual.
Way to go "Ramirez", cops everywhere salute you. Douchebag. - blackinthmiddle, on 04/23/2009, -1/+65Whether that's true or not, acting like a human being (and not trying to throw your weight around) goes a loooooong way! Something like:
Cop: Sir, you can't be here, we're in the mi...oh, are you guys reporters?
Hunt: Yes we are. We were sent here to report what's going on.
Cop: Ok, no problem. You just have to be out of our way as we do our job. You can report anywhere you like, just not in these certain locations because we're working here. You want to report on the sideline, no problem at all. Alright guys, gotta go. I've got work to do.
Anyone with a brain can see the guy's a reporter. If you're saying that for safety reasons you can't be in a certain location, tell the guy where he *can* report from. Obviously he went there to do a job. It wouldn't have taken the guy more than two seconds to say THERE is where you can report. Anyone with a high school diploma could figure this out. - rebelcommander, on 04/23/2009, -3/+67Is anyone else curious about the "men in military fatigues" hovering around the truck?
- PandaBearShenyu, on 04/23/2009, -3/+66What do they teach in police academy nowadays? That if you're a police, you can make up whatever law your crappy imagination comes up with? Hopefully this police department gets sued for all they're worth and the news crew wins.
This really isn`t policing, it`s just being a nazi. - Wag3Slav3, on 04/23/2009, -1/+64Office Ramirez needs to be charged with kidnapping and aggravated assault.
You would be if you pulled that stunt. - Wag3Slav3, on 04/23/2009, -2/+60Actually, if this cop is found to be in the wrong. He must be as no charges have been filed and he wasn't protecting public safety. He should be charged with aggravated assault. He was carrying his sidearm which is the aggravated, and kidnapping or unlawful imprisonment at the least.
Police should have none of the legal protections they currently have. If they throw you across the ground and slam your face into a fence for no reason other than you not obeying their constitutionally contrary order to restrain free press, they should be treated like any other citizen would be.
This cop knew he had no charges that he could file, but there was also no recourse for the citizen so he can just do whatever the hell he wants. - theberlindoctor, on 04/23/2009, -4/+58I'm growing so sick of cops pulling this *****.
- youliveinfear, on 04/23/2009, -2/+52this is the bigger question. There was military there.
"They parked on the shoulder of the other side of the road as men in military fatigues were helping pull the driver out of the cab"
Maybe they were just off-duty and were trying to be good samaritans.. - Nateon, on 04/23/2009, -8/+58Reminds me of the time I was arrested. I got into a car accident and the officer accused me of being high behind the wheel (I wasn't). He came up with a bunch of ***** charges so I was questioning him about them to get an explanation. He got angry because apparently due process pisses him off. he was rambling on about his 10 years of experience on the force and after I told him that experience doesn't make him justified he lost it and put me in cuffs.
I later found out he blatantly lied and exaggerated things on his reports to make it seem like I was intoxicated behind the wheel and because I couldn't afford a proper lawyer, I was hit with a DUI that will stay on my record forever. Cops can ***** you hard, even when you've done nothing wrong. It didn't help that I was driving through a small town in the middle of nowhere land Utah population 400. - dogatemypron, on 04/23/2009, -3/+50Darren Hunt is clearly a terrorist!
- LouiseBonde, on 04/23/2009, -0/+46Yeah, cause that's what Nazism is...angry policemen.
- borez, on 04/23/2009, -2/+47Bacon
- dsenman, on 04/23/2009, -0/+44Donuts
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/23/2009, -3/+46That happened to someone I know. He's a lawyer and went into a department store. When he tried to leave, the alarms went off and the goon hired to man the front door wouldn't let him leave without searching him. He informed him that he didn't buy anything and has no idea why the alarms went off. The guard didn't care and wanted to search him, but he protested. So the goon wouldn't let him leave.
He asked, "Are you therefore holding me against my will?" That question should have been a warning, but he simply said, "Yeah, you can't leave." A few minutes later, a real cop comes and my friend told them of the situation and was allowed to leave. The next day, a letter with the letterhead of the law firm he worked for made it's way to the department store. They quickly cut him a check for $5K to "make things right".
Dumb people will always cause organizations money. - alittleroy101, on 04/23/2009, -2/+44Hey Sgt. Raul Ramirez , you're a ***** douchebag.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+39I called once. The trick is to not be an ***** when you call. That's a skill most people on the Internet haven't managed to master.
But for the record, that number goes to an automated system. If you DO call, just be polite, state your concern, and basically act like people REALLY act in the Real World, and not like some douchbag Interweb Toughguy. - schmitey, on 04/23/2009, -3/+42That's pretty brazen and dumb on the behalf of the officer. You don't mess with people (like the media) who can and will gladly ruin your career. The people 1: dumbass egotistical cop 0
- jgzman, on 04/23/2009, -0/+38@gerrylazlo: UNACCEPTABLE. If you are expected to obey unlawful orders, then what, exactly, is the difference between a lawful and an unlawful order? You cannot usefully complain about an unlawful order two weeks later, after the injustice has happened. By then it is far too late. The guy they were beating has died, the evidence they were destroying is gone, the peaceful protest is no more.
As far as I'm concerned, unless enforcing a law, a cop has no authority to give me an order. I'm a civilian these days, despite my best efforts. - SolidBones, on 04/23/2009, -2/+39Now imagine all the people who have had to deal with this ***** without a rolling camera. I wonder how many have been unjustly jailed.
- ulmedas, on 04/23/2009, -2/+35Times are not worse or different. These things just get reported more often and spread more easily because of modern media. Hell, 45 years ago, the reporter might just have been disappeared.
- xsecretfiles, on 04/23/2009, -4/+36Was that "CHiPs" Erik Estrada?
- InetRoadkill, on 04/23/2009, -1/+32Damn cops are becoming less like public servants and more like armed thugs.
What we need is for congress to pass legislation that reinforces the 1st amendment so that these retards with a badge will finally understand that photography is not a crime. - jitterbits, on 04/23/2009, -1/+32I agree, but I think the punishment for cops should be even more severe for them than for civilians because they are abusing a position of power.
- jba68, on 04/23/2009, -0/+31Since they were on the opposite side of the road, how do you think this to be acceptable. Additionally, the chief said that the officer acted inappropriately.
If the crew was in the way, then the officer should have said so, and asked them to move other than threatening to arrest them. - scojac, on 04/23/2009, -0/+30In the way? They were on the other side of a highway barrier, separated by a chain link fence. The cop literally had to jump over the fence to ***** with the reporter & his camerman.
I'm sorry, but you're just being ridiculous. It's not ok for police or other citizens to steal or damage camera equipment; that's why the paparazzi have legal protection as well. In short, filming is not a crime.
And why, exactly was the reporter being detained? I think it's obvious from the video that the police officer was not administering justice according to any rational sense of rights or law; he was just angry and looking for someone to bully. Stupidly, it was a reporter...with a camera.
I'm glad technology is getting better. We need to catch these abuses as America slowly turns into a police state. If we are not allowed to watch and surveil those who are supposed to serve us, what right do they have to continually monitor us with warrantless wire taps and in-the-border checkpoints?
Democracy is not the official version of the truth. - srfrogger, on 04/23/2009, -1/+30For one its El Paso, Bliss is a huge installation.
Second, the reporter was trying to talk to people about the soldiers helping the victim out of the truck or car that was involved in the accident.
He was trying to film a happy story about soldiers being local heroes. Go figure I guess.... - dancantone, on 04/23/2009, -0/+29Yeah and the taxpayers pay out the judgement...not the dirty cop himself as a warning to the other ass tazing, head bashers!
- draemalic, on 04/24/2009, -1/+30Most police officers have no idea how to control their emotions. They're entirely too used to getting their way and being the ultimate authority figure in their own minds. The ones i've known have all been adrenaline junkies who like to boss people around - much like this *****.
- guairdean, on 04/23/2009, -1/+30From the article (slightly corrected): Ramirez has been placed on administrative duty pending the whitewashing of the event.
- ObeseSnake, on 04/23/2009, -0/+28Space aliens
- fotomatt, on 04/23/2009, -1/+29How about some jail time for this out-of-control piece of *****?
Two counts Assault & Battery.
Two counts False Imprisonment.
Two counts Kidnapping.
And perhaps a sentencing enhancement for the firearm he was carrying during the commission of a felony.
That's what would be charged if --anyone-- else did this. I don't care if you're a cop.
In fact, I think cops should be held to a HIGHER standard: They know the laws. They get special training. They get to wear the guns.
So when they decide to make their own rules, they should be held to that higher standard. - inactive, on 04/23/2009, -2/+29And ***** Dick Sanchez for saying on CNN that if "someone gives you an order, you have to follow it" and standing up for this *****.
