Poisoning the poor – Electronic Waste in Ghana
greenpeace.org — This shocking documentary from Greenpeace shows how "second hand goods" exported to Ghana for reuse are actually causing horrendous pollution. "People in the developed countries bring them here to bridge the digital gap but in actual fact they are creating a digital dump."

- Rotzooi, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2The marketplace at work. Only a dangerous socialist like Obama would want to interfere in the free market to stop these practices. Vote McCain!
- Kizilbash, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Most of them are from the Netherlands it was reported here the other day. I feel so proud of my country sometimes...
- Fangsinmybeard, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2There is way too much valuable recyclables to be throwing away e-waste.
- tama00, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2Those countries actually buy the waste and then use their cheap labour to harvest the minerals. For example the gold connectors for the batteries in mobile phones, if you get enough old mobile phones you could potentially melt all the gold out of it and profit. Except the cost of the labour in western countries to perform such a task, outweighs how much you would actually make.
Thats why these guys do it, except they lack safe work practises and a safe work environment, which is what they need help with really.. - chemrat, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1see also http://greenchemistry.wordpress.com/2008/04/23/pro ...

- chrissku, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2Maybe Ghana's government can help out a little bit too? I noticed the article makes no mention of what Ghana can do, or is doing to help its own people.
- jcorn1, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2Thanks for sending this my way.
