- clie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18From xtr3m's link: A traffic jam paralyzed Moscow city centre for many hours on October 31st.
Obviously this isn't a 24/7 situation like the blog author claims to exaggerate. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I'm sure there is some truth in what he says though. It has nothing to do with income. In the US many roads were built under military funding with the excuse that freeways could be a path for tanks to use in military emergencies. The roads in Russia I'm sure are no exception. And on top of that, like here in Los Angeles, it's extremely difficult and inconvenient to add more roads or fix highly congested areas because it would only cause more traffic. When most roads were built, people didn't know what traffic would be like in the future, especially in Russia where they have undergone many changes in their recent history.
- Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I get frustrated just looking at the pictures.

Ah, there it is. The "Rest of world lives in either slums or mud-huts" mentality. - david76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Don't they believe in traffic lights over there?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Atlanta traffic is THE WORST. It's as if people have no where to go and all day to get there.
- Sangatious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This is the aftermath of a James Bond chase scene.
- j0ew00ds, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Anyone else find humor in the URL being englishrussia.com, while the description barely qualifies as english?

- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -12/+20cost of living doesn't imply a high standard of living necessarily.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Thank God for public transit.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Their English is still better than your Russian, so?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8lol, im set for the day with soviet russia jokes
- Suits, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I thought the traffic was bad here in California, happily beat us for worse traffic, Russia. :s
Look at them all, it's as if they're in drive-through at McDonald's trying to beat the 11 o'clock deadline for Mcgriddle's. - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't know if you were making fun of the politics trolls, or if you are one, but either way, *thumbs down*'d
- johnroth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"These terrible traffic jams occur because of the big density of traffic.I live in Moscow, believe to me.

You the stupid ugly creature! What to you Russian people have made bad? Or you simply fine 16 years ***** to which have hammered in a head a *****?
Answer if be not too lazy. Only give reason for the hostility."
I'm sorry, but when I read this I thought it was the best comeback ever. - davidod87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Check out this video that's on the main page of the same site: http://englishrussia.com/?p=436
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10From the looks of this picture (http://englishrussia.com/images/moscow_traffic/4.JPG) there's a traffic light that's out. What's amazing to me is that people have absolutely no respect for their fellow drivers. Instead of treating the intersection like a stop sign and calmly waiting their turn, they cruise right into the middle of the road, blocking traffic for miles. When a traffic light goes out around my house, people are calm and courteous and things still run quite smoothly until the light is repaired, nothing like this ever happens. For the birthplace of communism, Russians seem to have absolutely no respect for community.
And what's going on with their city works department that it takes them 24 hours to repair a stop light? - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yep. The buses in those pictures look like they are zipping right along!
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Damn, I bet there are more people on that street, than I have in my entire town!
- subix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7All their roads were planned in soviet times when no one had cars. That is why the traffic there is horrible. The thing I liked the most about visiting there is that there were almost no traffic laws. You can park your car anywhere you want including sidewalks.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And a previous article on digg said Russia's population was disappearing. Looks like they're all migrating to Moscow if you ask me :)
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@Haohmaru
a.k.a. the typical American mentality. - seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9wow backpage stories get up to 150 diggs without reaching to front.

- mugginns, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Reaganomics ftw
- molochi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thank god for limos with stocked bars.
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Something similar, traffic in India (so says the title):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg9f93gpfbo - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well they only have 14 lanes. lol
- PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I live in Los Angeles and India is just plain freaking INSANE! It's like an organized ant colony!
- *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3LOL at how they have roads joining from the side and no traffic lights!
- akumaryuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3perhaps the reason traffic is so bad is because it appears that either there is no traffic light, or it is out. It looks like people just sort of push their way out into the street and block the road for miles. This is a terrible way to run a transportation system and I would hope that the signal is just out. It doesn't appear to be a lack of electricity in the area since the night picture shows lights on in the buildings around. So either the bulbs went out, or there is not light there....Sad
- molochi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ATL traffic is pretty nuts. But you don't really have a choice. There aren't any buses or trains that go where you need and it's 10-20 miles to get anywhere. God help you if you're on of the millions of people trying to cross the river on the 2 lane bridges. Its the price we pay for mini mansions on big lots and lots of trees....
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Third world driving is a different universe compared to 1st world driving. Yet people survive going from point A to point B every day. The trick is everyone knows it's chaotic so they use hand signals and eye contact to get around eachother, there is rarely road rage - people just want to survive. Often people have drivers who drive for them, saying prayers of course before they hit the road. Amazingly though they still function as a society, things get done and commerce happens.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let me get back to you on that, my big mac is ready.
- porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, kind of like the traffic jams in downtown Nairobi Kenya (yes, it is true).
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those are SOVIET cars, not Russian. Yes, a lot of people in Russia still drive Lada Model 7's and *****, but at the same time, Moscow and St. Petersburg have some of the highest concentrations of luxury cars in the world.
- natterca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Gorbachev FTW. He had the vision to stop the insanity. Perhaps the greatest leader of the 20th century.
- toastastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jeeeesus. I'll never complain about traffic in my town again.
- santiago1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 Dude, I'm also willing to bet you don't have an 18 lane expressway near your house!
Crossing a 2 lane road: piece of cake as long as your careful,
Trying to cross 9 lanes of chaos: not so much.... - InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've only seen nice drivers in USA. In Romania, if you don't push into the intersection like that, nobody will ever let you in. That's just the mentality, I guess.
- neilpan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7and In India,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg9f93gpfbo - scorchedearth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it just goes to show you that the automobile-centred way of life will only lead to endless traffic jams
we need to minimize car usage or condemn ourselves to endless frustration -
