[Pic] There's NO WAY the Dubai Newspaper Printed an Ad Like this on 9/11!

- DavidBGie, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Those 5.4 million people chose to smoke. By the way, people knew cigarettes where bad for you in the 60's. They were not "tricked". The victims of 9/11 had no choice. That ad is stupid and the people who believe it are morons.
- dyckdownunder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Am I the only one who sees the point of the ad? Its not about choice, its about bringing a sense of perspective to the issue. Everyone agrees 9/11 (or like everywhere else is the world, 11/9) was a tragedy, but not many people see the tragedy of smoking, or the scope of it's destruction. Its an excellent way to relate it. I applaud the ad.
- DavidBGie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15.4 million people taking a chance on cancer, knowing it then dying later is NOT a tragedy! The 9/11 victims did not bring on their own death someone decided to kill them. There is NO comparison ... PERIOD! Wake up stupid people!!!!!!

- FizixMan, on 10/10/2007, -32/+501I think it's more ridiculous that we keep placing 9/11 on this high pedestal when there are FAR WORSE atrocities happening in the world.
- FTLJohnson, on 10/10/2007, -14/+195Like the fact that it's approaching over one million civilians dead in Iraq?
- LeeSoong, on 10/10/2007, -21/+8no, that the value of the usa dollar is in free fall.
peg the value of 1 dollar to 1 gallon of premium gasoline,

Wow, yeah, that's great logic. /sarc
Just because you're arguing with an idiot, Gerz, doesn't mean you're immune from making an ass of yourself. Respond to illogic with logic. It works wonders. - Gerz1219, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Well, to be fair, he didn't really give me much to argue with. There is a study which claims the Iraqi death toll might be approaching 1 million.
http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/asection/la-fg-iraq14sep14,1,1207545.story?coll=la-news-a_section&ctrack=1&cset=true
Basically, neither the US, British, or Iraqi governments want to keep track of civilian deaths or release hard numbers to the public, because any realistic numbers will make them all look bad. So we're left with a case of independent organizations using polling data to arrive at an estimate, which will be disputed out of hand by any of the three governments no matter how accurate those numbers are.
It's probably safe to assume that the real number is somewhat lower than what is currently cited by anti-war groups. But at the same time, the number of deaths is almost certainly higher than whatever Bush will admit to. This is not exactly an administration which has a history of transparency and forthrightness.
My point was simply that while it's a mistake to believe every number you hear, it's similarly a bad response to disbelieve the million-dead figure simply because you support the war. And you can't call it a total lie without providing some form of counter-evidence. The government's counter-evidence essentially amounts to "Nuh-uh!", and Bush has done little to earn the benefit of the doubt. - bleep1912, on 10/10/2007, -11/+6The jewish holocaust is a lie too, only about 5000 died.
- aduzik, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23Yep, so our government has caused, what, 250 9/11's now?
- Wargalas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Unfortunately, when you do the math, the whole "one million civilians dead" talking point doesn't pan out. That's an exaggeration that's been spit out over and over by people on the left. Assuming that we've been in this war for 5 years, that means over 547 people killed in Iraq EACH AND EVERY DAY for 5 years. Sorry to burst your bubble, but that's just not the case.
- LeeSoong, on 10/10/2007, -21/+8no, that the value of the usa dollar is in free fall.

- xjedi, on 10/10/2007, -9/+59/11 is important because it set other things in motion. Yeah, worse things happen all around the world, but 911 caused a lot of things to take place which caused some of those bad things to happen.
- ManOfMiracles, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12What your describing is called the "Retard's butterfly effect". Of course bad things happened "after" 9/11, doesn't mean it set many bad things in motion, the few I can think of: Invading Iraq (disaster so far), our slippery slope to a police state. Killings in Darfur, India and Pakistan with Kashmir, Civil Wars in the Middle East...ALL happening before 9/11...and now after. Wake up people, the US is not the center of the freaking Universe.

- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11No one is calling for, or performing beheadings, we are simply saying that it's probably in poor taste.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+13I don't think it's in poor taste. In fact, I think it gets its point across really well. They're saying that 9/11 was a tragedy, and even more tragedies happen each year due to smoking. They're using a well known event that people can relate to.
- diggimator, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3Killing is wrong, but Mohammad cartoons were culturally insensitive and wrong. And being ignortant of other's cultures should be no excuse to support such behaviour either.
- iamafatguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It's a fricking cartoon. Get over it.
- Monk22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6its not being ignorant of other cultures. im not a muslim so its not against the "rules" for me to draw mohammed. i dont give a ***** about what your religion says you can and cant do, im not a part of it.
- ShadowMerchant, on 10/10/2007, -11/+2I don't give a ***** what the Muslims think, we'll make any God damn ***** cartoons we want, it's our right as free citizens. In fact, the more they get pissed off the better, it will help us identify the radicals who need killing.
***** Islam, piss on the dog Mahommed, I ***** on the beard of the pig ***** demon Allah. I wipe my ass with the filthy Koran. Any Muslims reading this, be warned, we're tired of your ***** and you are going to be dragged into the modern world by harsh pitiless force.- ashwin100, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Shunning religion is one thing, but insulting it with the sole purpose of offending those who follow it is a little messed up. I'm going to stereotype you as a redneck hick who thinks he is being patriotic, when you're being more idiotic.
- Mrstupid7, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Did you know that Jesus was gay? Otherwise how could you explain his total disinterest in women?
- TheLoneHoot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But what do you think of Islam overall? (/sarc)
ShadowMerchant, you don't need to answer this (in fact, please don't!), but how would you feel if people drew cartoons of jesus getting butt ***** by one or more of his disciples? Suppose you saw a picture of an "ol' timey" outhouse and instead of a trusty sears catalog for toilet paper, they had a bible hanging on a rope? Personally, I'd find it funny, but I'm betting you wouldn't.
I'm going with ashwin100 above, you're probably a redneck ***** trying to be an internet tough guy. The obvious conclusion is you're over compensating for your tiny penis.

- BlackStorm, on 10/14/2007, -10/+116Damn right man!! I agree 100%. Sure, 9/11 was bad, but when placed in comparison with other things that end human life, it seems small. Plus, 9/11 happened once in the last 6 years, where as there were roughly 32.4 million smoking related deaths in the last 6 years. (o.0) But, 9/11 we can't forget about. =/ At least we got our priorities straight.
- Dustin- xxBondsxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14more people have died from overdoses of tylenol and advil than from terrorist attacks EVER (with the major attacks including 9/11, the first WTC, and timothy, etc)

- Poltras, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Hey you mean my mom decided to have breast cancer? And my friend decided to have sex with a girl with HIV who didn't tell him? And that boy I saw having a car accident? He decided the guy would have been drunk?
Get some facts about what's killing. Tobacco is getting less and less popular every day.
But of course, no one care about HIV in Africa or elsewhere. Breast cancer researches are underfunded. And people still drive drunk without nobody around them asking their keys. Meanwhile, billions of dollars a week are spent to save people we shouldn't care (from a "we still have problems at home" point of view) in a pretext that was admittedly false, using terrorism as a trigger. Nice perspective. - Sethbacca, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4Actually, about your friend who slept with the chick with HIV. Yeah he did decide to have sex with her or not. If he didn't wrap his junk before getting in bed, knowing full well the type of STD's that are out there, then it was his responsibility. Sorry, I'll probably get dugg down for this but if you don't know that you're playing Russian roulette with every chick you sleep with then you're fooling yourself. I know full well what I'm getting into when I go to bed with a chick and it's nobodys fault but my own if I catch some crotch rot.
- KennMac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3There are so many things wrong with your statement here, it makes me sad that you exist.
- Sethbacca, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4It makes me sad to know that you can't differentiate between a disease that happens randomly based upon gender and race factors and a disease that occurs because someone makes the CHOICE to have intercourse with another human being. I'm sorry but HIV is preventable, don't sleep with every person you meet, nice and easy. I can sympathize on the breast cancer as my grandmother died of it, I can sympathize on the not choosing to get killed by a drunk driver because i know people who have been killed by drunk drivers. I'm just saying you can't lump in getting HIV with those 2 circumstances because it's a choice you make to sleep with someone, it's an irrefutable fact (unless you get it via a transfusion, but thats not what we're talking about here)
- Onyxblaze, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Then I hope you never sleep with someone.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3@Onyx: I don't think we have to worry about that happening...
- moskaudancer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Do you people refute the fact that HIV caught through consensual sex is anyone's fault but your own?! WTF is up with that? If you CHOOSE to have sex with someone, it's YOUR fault if they give you an STD, because it's YOUR fault that you slept with them. How can anyone with even a basic understanding of free will not get this?! He's not insulting Poltras, people, he's pointing out that one of Poltras's examples doesn't belong in the same category as the other two!
- krebcycle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If you live in some areas in Africa basically the only way to not be exposed to HIV is find a way to leave. You can't safely have sex with anyone, you're not safe in hospitals, it's a plague. Also, there is so much misinformation in Africa; there are actually campaigns which insinuate that condoms CAUSE HIV there in order to promote abstinence. Comparing HIV there to here is completely different.
- BlackStorm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I understand people choose to smoke, but the ad was talking about smoking RELATED deaths. Not deaths caused by some ass clown who smoked for 30 years and died of lung cancer. Second hand smoke is a smoking related death.

- Poltras, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Hey you mean my mom decided to have breast cancer? And my friend decided to have sex with a girl with HIV who didn't tell him? And that boy I saw having a car accident? He decided the guy would have been drunk?
- dclowd9901, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5God, I hate when people sign their comments. I can almost imagine them doing that half thumbs-up pointing thing while saying their name and winking at you. I, NOR ANYONE ELSE GIVES A ***** WHO YOU REALLY ARE. Plus it makes you look like a douche.

- daybreaker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2How will the terrorists win? Will they build hotels on boardwalk? This isnt a game, and the administration needs to realize there is no win or lose, and the brainwashed citizens of the US need to realize this isnt a war where we're going to be able to "win" and all of a sudden Iraq will be a happy place with unicorns and flowers. "Fighting" terrorism is just a ploy by the administration to cast their iron grip over the country and turn it towards a dictatorship instead of a democracy.
- kronix2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Building really small buildings would send a message to the terrorists.
"We're all midgets now."
- CaymanCarpediem, on 10/10/2007, -6/+52So it is your contention that we should spend more time worrying about things we have no control over than things we can very easily control? That doesn't make much sense.

- quisph, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Peer pressure is probably almost as hard to resist. IIRC, the number one predictor of whether or not a person will become a smoker is whether or not his/her friends smoke. I'm not defending the choice, but I think a little sympathy is due. As ckhw2 said, we're only human. We've all made bad choices because of peer pressure.
- FTLJohnson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7heh, cold turkey 4 years ago... I also promptly lost 70 pounds. People definitely make their own choices... Including killing themselves... and everyone should have the right to do so. If you want to throw yourself off a building... It's YOUR body, and YOUR life. - aduzik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, yes I have. I've been smoke-free for over a year now.
- krebcycle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I quit smoking cold turkey when I turned 30. I had smoked a pack a day for ten years. It was actually much much easier than I thought it would be, and I was frustrated that I hadn't quit earlier; I was afraid of failure. I haven't smoked now in 5 years, and I never will again.
If you don't smoke, quit reading here.
And just as a public service announcement, if you want to quit smoking and make it stick, try this: Pick a date a year in the future, and tell all your friends and relatives you're going to quit on that date. I picked my birthday, so it couldn't change. Remind them of it, and fear the date. When the date comes, smoke your last cigarette, and go cold turkey. It will work; you won't turn back. It takes about two weeks of irritation; you'll be a dick and you'll be frustrated, but you'll get over it, it isn't that bad. Have an excercise plan during that period to get your frustrations out. I rode my bike up all the tallest hills in the city, figuring now is the time to start to get my lungs back. It was actually a good experience overall.

- m4csrgh3yk3v, on 10/14/2007, -1/+18Only a generation as lucky as ours or our parents could call it a "war on terror". We haven't lived through a real war. Ask your grandparents what a war is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ww2 Honestly, 3000 people die and people refer to 9/11 in terms of "Pre-9/11" and "Post-9/11" like it's the ***** birth of christ or something. We are sheltered and immature and history will see us as such. There is no war on terror.
- CamperBob, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0"Ask your grandparents what a war is."
Would these be the same grandparents who tripped on their own beards rushing to vote for Dubya? Seems that being a little more respectful of the concept of 'war' would have prevented this one.

- guzziguy, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2One has nothing to do with the other. But I guess you're in the NUT FRINGE that believes that the government blew up those buildings....This IF TRUE is nothing more then a way to marginalize what happened.
- SuperCujo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3For no reason?
Geez, the ignorant folk are out today... - Phatt138, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Seriously. For no reason, huh? Someone needs a brief and totally manageable history lesson. Five minutes with the right book would blow his mind. Everything happens for a reason, and 9/11 had more to do with politics than religion.
Take heart guzzi. You have more chance of dying as an uneducated, reactionary finger-pointer than being killed by terrorists. America salutes you. - bedamned, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I smell bush's rat! Yeech!

Or you could just play Gershwin songs in your head, wave the flag, close your eyes, and believe that sticking to your beliefs and ignoring facts makes you a morally correct patriot. Yes, I knew you would. - SlipstreamLucas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0for no reason? well, that all depends on who you think did it.
- SuperCujo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3For no reason?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Tens of thousands die in the US EVERY YEAR from traffic accidents. A good portion of those (>3000) had no choice or power in the matter. 9/11 is not very significant, in the grand scheme of things. Sure, we should attempt to prevent it from happening again, but killing innocent people in the Middle East and destroying our civil liberties turning the US into a police state is NOT the way to go about that!
- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Traffic accidents do not cause our economy to collapse overnight you ***** idiot.
- Phatt138, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, there are two answers to why people think this way. Psychologists involved in risk assessment know that it has a lot to do with the fact that people don't mind taking risks that they feel they control - like smoking, or fast driving, etc - but are petrified by things that they can't, like terrorists or the threat of nuclear war.
My addendum is that the average American just wants to worry about things that aren't his/her responsibility to fix. Hell, if we can throw money at our government to give us increased protection from something that we're completely unlikely to die from instead of, say, adjusting our eating habits or not smoking or taking a ***** jog every now and again, so be it. People would rather fret about something that doesn't require them to change anything about their lifestyles. - headphonedude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree. If bush and giuliani can use 9/11, why not an anti smoking agency.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can't believe how badly you and everyone else missed the point. The ad isn't trying to trivialize 9/11, and any idiot can see that comparing the deaths on 9/11 to the deaths from smoking is just stupid. The point of the ad is that a lot of people choose to kill themselves through smoking, a lot more die from it than died on 9/11, and so it's obviously a serious problem. But acting like this ad is supposed to remind us that terror is nothing compared to smoking is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen someone do.

- spookyttws, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Its 2007, I think pretty much everyone knows smoking is bad for you, and can kill you. But you're doing it to yourself, so I don't care. It's your choice to put whatever you want into your body. (and second hand smoke is only a factor if you are constantly exposed, as pointed out above). I just don't think it should be compared to a national tragedy, seems tacky.

It has clouded our judgement for too long. Also, humorlessness is not an admirable character trait. - Shelter22, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3saying "get over it" is ***** stupid. thousands of american civilians died, and it was ONLY six years ago. the people who died on 9/11 were just people going to work. they aren't stupid ass soldiers or bush lovers. yeah, the wars are crap yadda yadda yadda, but the civilians who were killed are not part of that, and deserve some damn respect.
- Tack122, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0While they do deserve respect, can you imagine what they would think about us going to war to avenge them then killing many more innocents than died on 9/11?

- IrwinFletcher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Of the all sorties flown over Afghanistan yesterday, how many dropped ordinance? The day before that? And the day before that? And the day before that? Of that ordinance dropped, how much of it was dropped on villages in the hopes of "getting the bad guys" vs. dropped on known Taliban firing positions? You can't answer that because you don't know. You don't know half as much as you think you do. Secondly, how are those American lives lost on 9/11 any LESS valuable than civilians killed in Afghanistan? None of the aforementioned asked to be caught in the crossfire of an ideological war between the West and radical Islam. And for the record, I'm fine with the ad - it's a powerful message
- freexe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1America had a choice. it didn't need to invade Afghanistan and Iraq. Those people in Afghanistan and Iraq died when they didn't need to.

- brim4brim, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21I think American's could do with realising that every other country couldn't give a crap about 9/11 as most other countries have a few of these types of events within the past 100 years of their countries history. Your not special, your turn just came up. And why would we get riled up from picking up pieces of their fragmented feet in the rubble for months? 9/11 "directly affected" all Americans.
- stevefl209, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The ones who aren't riled up simply aren't as vocal about not being riled up. 9/11 was horrible and tragic, but yes (joot) I have moved on with life.

- inkswamp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Here's where having a nuanced view of the world helps to see how silly that comment is. Muslims can handle cartoons, but depictions of Mohammad are considered blasphemous to them. So, the equivalent for Christians wouldn't be Jesus in a cartoon, but rather Jesus depicted in some blasphemous manner. Look up the events surrounding the Piss Christ artwork or the image of Mary created from elephant dung and observe the outraged reactions from Christians who wanted the artwork banned and the artists punished and wanted the galleries closed down. Pretty much the same as the outraged Muslims in my book.

- connizzle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Way to freak out there, we all know it was a tragic event but at some point we're all going to have to move on, and it's just an ad that they compare a tragic event (that everyone remembers and knew how many died), and compares it with how many people die a year from smoking, just to show the extent of it.

Need I say more? - gweasel2000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Not one death?? I had a friend who died as a direct result (car crash). Your right that it isn't linked to any diseases but it does kill. Before someone says it yes alcohol results in the same thing and that is why I think it shouldn't be allowed either...or at least given under better control.
- synaesthesia, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If your friend was driving under the influence, the death can be attributed to stupidity, not pot.
- offspring06, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Exactly, why blame it on pot. People need to take responsibility for their actions and stop blaming it on something else. Just like drinking and driving should not be blamed on alcohol but on the individual.
- jdoe562, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Ok, so the high can make you do dangerous things, but your friend should have considered that before he started driving while high. Marijuana itself is 100% completely harmless, and by your logic, cars should be banned, because they can kill people too.
*****.

- jellomizer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Well I don't see why Dubai wouldn't do this on 9/11.
First Dubai is a different country they recognize that 9/11 is a tragedy but still it is remote for them so it doesn't effect their sensitivities. It is like saying how smoking killed more people then Americans Died during the American Civil War. It is a remote event to them so it doesn't effect them on the same personal level. Much like the Subway bombings in london effected the English more then the Americans.
Second I don't really see it disrespectful they are just explaining that Cigarets are dangerous and if you are going to focus on preventing 9/11 like attacks every decade vs. trying to stop people from smoking that stopping smoking will probably save more lives then fighting terror.- 1MaskedPenguin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Logic has no place on digg.
- shedtroll, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Offensive, Yet Effective...
- mrcpu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I find smoking and inconsiderate smokers more offensive.
- Trublmakr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I fail to understand how it's so damn offensive,.. they're obviously agreeing with you - suggesting 911 was a tragedy. I understand that framing cigarette smoking deaths in the same context is shocking, but that's clearly the intention.
- em22, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I think theres nothing wrong with the advert, it's giving you a warning - It's not like Dubai is full of Americans.
- beedo34, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4yes it is, you idiot
arabs don't work. all they do is drive bentley's around all day.
foreigners pump the blood through the entire middle east.- Gav0510, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yeah, those 700,000+ civilian casualties in Iraq were all driving Bentleys around. Bentleys are built like tanks so that why the US army mistook them for being enemies.
- Metman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The 700,000 casualties are from BOTH sides, not just the US military. I am not arguing your point, just clarifying the comment.
- beedo34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2that's like saying that native americans and eskimos and ***** that are still living in the wilderness are like stock brokers. yeah, there's a lot of people over there that still live in the desert, and yes, they get killed (unjustly).
but as a whole, the arabs are super rich and in their cities it's just a ***** of expensive and exotic *****.
retard, i lived there for 6 years. - krebcycle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3We're talking about Dubai ass, not Iraq. If you think Dubai and Iraq are much like each other then you're nuts.

- Danial, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You mean the thousands of my fellow Pakistanis who work in slave-like conditions to build the skyscrapers?
- radioactivekt81, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes
- stuartpetty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Really good Ad, My friend works out in Dubai as a nurse and she says that the hospital is full of US Doctors, however they are all struck off and it's one of the few places they can find work!
- beedo34, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4yes it is, you idiot
- saigumi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does this mean that the Truthers are going to start saying that smoking is an inside job propegated by the tobbacco companies?
