Parents say teacher went too far answering sex-ed questions
sltrib.com — The Jordan School District is investigating allegations that a seventh- and eighth-grade health teacher violated the sex education statute by responding to questions from students about topics beyond the core curriculum, including homosexual sex, oral sex and masturbation. They are working with a lawmaker to seek criminal penalties.

They would have said "homosexuality/anal sex/masturbation is wrong, and we don't want you to know about it. NEVER, EVER do it, and if you ever ask about it again i'm going to scream at you."
And that would have been it.- Xanium4332, on 06/01/2008, -20/+7Let me guess, your Catholic?

I disagree. It is a parent's responsibility to teach their kids about morality and sex, amongst a great many other things; not the school's.
How would you feel if during a class on world history, I started teaching your child about Martin Luther? You'd probably be OK with that. What if I started preaching Lutheran doctrine and reading from the Bible as part of the history? I imagine you'd feel quite differently.- macweirdo42, on 06/01/2008, -1/+17Who was preaching morality? The students asked questions, the teacher answered them. If a student asked you about Lutheran doctrine in this hypothetical history class, you're gonna tell me it would be out of line if you answered it?
- MWeather, on 06/01/2008, -1/+16Sex is a biological process. It's up to the school to teach about biology.
"How would you feel if during a class on world history, I started teaching your child about Martin Luther? You'd probably be OK with that."
I learned about Martin Luther in school. The reformation was an important part of world history.
"What if I started preaching Lutheran doctrine and reading from the Bible as part of the history? I imagine you'd feel quite differently."
Of course I'd have a problem with that, as I would if the school started encouraging kids to have anal sex.
Just teaching about Lutheran doctrine is OK, though In fact I'd be pissed if they didn't teach the Lutheran doctrine. How else could you teach the reformation if not noting the different parties' beliefs? - rossisdead, on 06/02/2008, -1/+4There's a very good reason why you're an idiot. Public education has no right to be biased whatsoever against something like this. If the kid asks, in a sex ed class of all things, "What's a blowjob?" The teacher should be perfectly allowed to give the answer of "It's putting a dick in a mouth".
If Johnny McOhMyGod's mom/dad gets all up in arms about their kid now knowing a fact of life, they can either pull the kid out from public education, or beat their personal morality into their kid and hope they get their point. - Herolint, on 06/02/2008, -5/+1@MWeather
You are right. Sex is a biological process and should be taught in biology or maybe health classes. However, homosexuality, oral sex, and anal sex are NOT biological processes and should therefore NOT be taught in public education. These are issues of morality to a very large number of parents in the U.S. and they have the right to teach their children their moral views and to rest assured that their family's moral views are not being undermined by the public education system. - Herolint, on 06/02/2008, -4/+1@macweirdo42
The article brought up morality. Homosexuality, anal sex, and oral sex are issues of morality and not issues of biology.
A teacher is required by law in Utah to teach reproduction and sex at a scientific level. Talking about blow jobs, dildos, and what positions the teacher likes best are entirely beyond that scope; not to mention against the law. - Herolint, on 06/02/2008, -2/+1@rossisdead
I always enjoy when somebody calls me an idiot, and then follows that up with the most ill-informed and ridiculous statement possible. It warms the heart.
Whether you agree or not, it is against the law in Utah for a teacher to teach anything more than the science behind reproduction and the health risks involved (e.g. aids, gonorrhea, syphilis, etc.) They can't talk about dildos, anal sex, and menage a trois.
In my opinion, blow jobs, masturbation, homosexuality, anal sex, oral sex, and what positions the teacher thinks are the most pleasurable are all issues of opinion and morality, and just as we don't teach religion in school, we should not be teaching issues of morality when everyone's definitions are different, and normally held religiously.
These kinds of discussions are the responsibility of the parents and have no place in public education. - MWeather, on 06/02/2008, -0/+3@Herolint
Sex with a condom isn't a biological process wither, but it's a part of human sexuality. Homosexuality, anal sex and oral sex are also a part of human sexuality. And we're not the only species that practice it, either.
"These are issues of morality to a very large number of parents in the U.S."
So is the idea of a heliocentric solar system, but the facts are the facts, no mater what your morals are. It's up to the schools to teach the facts.

- cupid311, on 06/01/2008, -0/+59I 100% agree, I was lucky and had a health teacher in middle school that would answer any question asked of her in a professional and serious manner. She later got fired for similar reasons. Completely ridiculous.....
- Herolint, on 06/01/2008, -3/+14Did you ask your parents?
From the way you phrased your statement, I get the impression you assumed they wouldn't talk to you, so you never asked.
Personally, I am very open about sex with my children, and I think every parent should be. My kids have asked me some pretty interesting stuff over the years, but I'd rather answer a mildly uncomfortable question than have them get answers from someone who doesn't have their best interests at heart.- Eezyville, on 06/01/2008, -0/+19You represent 1 in a million. good game

- Herolint, on 06/02/2008, -2/+1I am very glad you blame the parents for misinformed and confused children. It is, after all, their responsibility to teach their children and prepare them for life. Public school is just a tool available to parents to teach their kids. The responsibility is nonetheless theirs (though many fail to grasp that concept and perform accordingly).
- tech42er, on 06/01/2008, -0/+3Well, how'd you learn about it? The kids are going to learn the way they always have: their pers and the Internet.

- WalkerTXclocker, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2I think the problem is that a teacher can often serve a dual role of teacher and trusted adult friend. I would hope my kids have a teacher that they feel they can trust.
- Herolint, on 06/02/2008, -2/+1I would prefer being the kind of parent my kids can trust.

- scotticus, on 06/01/2008, -0/+36I attended a high school where our health books were censored, requiring teaching of only natural family planning and zero mention of safe sex or contraception. Our schools are so tightly regulated it's insane. I don't think they should be able to say anything they want obviously, but it's just gotten so ridiculous. If everything is coming straight out of an strictly regulated curriculum, complete with textbooks and slides then what the ***** do we even need the teachers for?
Seriously though when I was in elementary school and we had our first Sex Ed class, some students(me) thought it was important to ask questions not covered by the film. Questions such as "Does sex feel good?" and "Do YOU like having sex?". This was taken not very well by the majority of the teachers in the room, who hated me anyway.
My teacher, the youngest and coolest one by at least a quarter century did answer me once we were back in our respective classrooms. Still though she was hesitant to say much, I'm sure for this VERY reason. She confined herself to answers, such as "If it's with the right person then it can feel very good." and "My husband and I do have sex(she was pregnant at the time so.. hard to avoid that one) because we love each other very much." Which was acceptable after some debate, no matter how hard I pressed her for a definite answer.
I think it would be absolutely appropriate to have Sex Ed include some 1-on-1 Q&A. They need to superficially cover topics not on a ***** approved video, it will end up dumbing the kids down if they get the wrong answers to what they want to know.
I hope to god she never got fired for anything stupid like that, I would cry. I want my daughters to have someone like that in their school. - antifreeze11, on 06/02/2008, -0/+2Pillowpants

That's a pretty good assumption. Particularly if the person labels someone with a healthy attitude toward sex as some kind of pervert. There is a long list of famous conservatives who have pulled those comparisons and half of them ended up being actual perverts themselves.
Some recent examples:
Mark Foley (pedophile)
Ted Haggard (gay)
Larry Craig (hot airport bathroom sex... er... wide stance)
Bob Allen (offered a dude $20 to let him give the dude a blowy)
Glenn Murphy Jr. (blew a fellow republican in his sleep)
Rick Santorum (not gay -yet-. Equates homosexuality with bestiality)
Every conservative televangelist.

If a kid asked "Is masturbation okay?" and the teacher responded by saying "Yes masturbation is great. You should do it all the time, whenever you can. In fact, you should do it right now in class! And women love it when you masturbate into their mouths! Open wide Jenny!" then that would be inappropriate. However, if the answers were sensible and mature then the parents are just ignorant asses.

Sometimes it's just easier to ask a teacher (or just someone other than your parents) about that kind of stuff, and we need people answering who will be forthright and truthful, not embarrassed and ignorant.- trademaak, on 06/01/2008, -0/+9Well, he was wrong, because actually scientists have proven masturbation is healthy, especially for men. It has something to do with hormones, I believe. Also, that is why some animals are castrated, because if they don't get sex, they might have health issues and become aggresive or even mad searching for a mate.

Actually... Now that I think about it im pretty sure he was a gay pedophile...- einrobstein, on 06/01/2008, -4/+24I think they have to come up with some sort of word that specifically denotes pedophiles which are attracted to male children and a different one for female children. Your teacher was definitely a pedophile, but I don't know if the fact that he was attracted to boys actually makes him "gay". There's the niggling insinuation that gay men tend to be pedophiles which I find improper.
- 808ethan, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1There may be something to that image. One theory of homosexuality states that it is simply a desire to stay a child permanently. A perfectly understandable thing in my opinion. Anyway, before puberty boys only play with boys and girls only play with girls.
So if you think of a guy simply being focused on his youth, like young & like male are part of the same thing.
This could be a crap theory, but it is one possibility.

- AtWorkSurfer, on 06/01/2008, -4/+5I recall watching sex ed videos (16mm film, actually) on at least one occasion at youth group at my church. But I grew up in a fairly progressive community.
- specialK16, on 06/01/2008, -5/+17This was the kind of comment I was waiting for. Believe me, I know many Christians that are more open to Sex topics than most freaks out there. Religion is not the issue here, it is crazy parents who won't accept their children growth.
- Fartag, on 06/01/2008, -3/+13Well it has the hallmark of religious influence doesn't it? In other words, how much would you bet that there are _any_ non-religious people demanding the teacher be fired or put in prison in this case? Clearly not all religious people take their religion seriously and so become more moderate, but the vast majority of those encouraging more bodily shame in life, law and education come from the religious camp.
- lemur, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6I really do think that there are some non-religious parents who are objecting to it. The thing is that sex generally tends to freak out a lot of people and make them incredibly uncomfortable. I don't think a person's religious affiliation is going to change that about their personality, though it does arm with with a rationale to justify it.
Another issue is that the fact that they are parents means that they already have had experience with sex, and that doesn't necessarily make it a good experience. In my life, all the people I met who appeared to genuinely hate sex were married, and I suspect it was because they hated their spouses and/or parenthood.
Conversely, I never met a childless person who wasn't obsessed with sex. That's nature for you. :-) - Fartag, on 06/01/2008, -0/+3Good points, lemur. There are indeed significant influences from our evolutionary past too. Pregnancy during times of insufficient resources, or trouble with disease transmission, or the _significant_ trouble caused by inbreeding in our evolutionary past probably helps explain why there isn't sex everywhere in public (even if not illegal) in even secular societies, and is probably the primal source of discomfort of discussing these things within the family for even non-religious families.
I can't imagine, for example, _ever_ wanting to discuss oral sex techniques with my parents. *shudder*. That's clearly a better "job" for the Internet.
But when this natural suppression is amped up to the unreasonable. When the "shame" factor goes through the roof, then religion, I'm still placing my bets, is to blame. What reasonable person wants to send someone to prison for answering explicit questions? I'd think none would be the answer there. - specialK16, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1"What reasonable person wants to send someone to prison for answering explicit questions? I'd think none would be the answer there."
I understand your question here, but you'd be surprised on how many people, even non-religious persons, will freak out and close their heads to sexual topics. This problem goes along with ignorance, and yes, in many cases religion also goes in hand with ignorance, but when it comes to sex topics, even non-religious people tend to freak out, especially parents.
- lemur, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6I really do think that there are some non-religious parents who are objecting to it. - DucoNihilum, on 06/01/2008, -9/+9Not really. The fact that we have public schools at all is a problem, but if we remove those we can solve the problem we're having with this altogether.
- Spudster, on 06/01/2008, -7/+9Yeah that's totally the answer to this problem. Let's give out government vouchers to all private schools and promote religious and ideological teaching in schools. That'll really help...
- DucoNihilum, on 06/01/2008, -6/+3I'm suggesting we remove public education altogether. The voucher system is a compromise that the leftists are unwilling to accept. If we have only private education, then parents who want to teach their kids this will send their kids to school which do, parents who do not will send their kids to schools which do not. Everybody is happy.
- Kyderdog, on 06/01/2008, -5/+3Your a Dumbass...
Privates School Score worse than Public Schools according to some of the more recent digg stories.
Only the Christian Nazis want Vouchers... - DucoNihilum, on 06/01/2008, -2/+2That story simply suggested that test scores for young children, in math only were a bit higher in private schools than public schools. Private schools have numerous advantages over public schools. If all schools were private, then if a school was doing poorly parents would simply not send their students to that school. However, with the public school system your only choice is to pay for public schooling, and then private schooling- effectively paying TWICE to educate your children. The free market will prevent any of these problems from occurring, as public schools have absolute and total free reign over us- they're a government controlled monopoly. It's interesting you call me a Christian Nazi, because that's a rather ignorant stereotype. I'm an Agnostic, and I support Liberty far more than you seem to.
- tech42er, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1Absolutely. Those parents are wrong, but they have the right to send their kids to whatever school they want. If you disagree with that, you'd have to outlaw ALL private schools. Furthermore, it's certainly true that private schools, by virtue of competition both among schools and students for admission, are generally better. Last of all, it's the freest system since it lets people choose instead of being assigned to a school by the government based only on location. Of course, we effectively have a privatized system now, since real estate prices reflect the quality of the public schools in the district. A voucher system would just give poorer parents the same opportunities wealthier ones do.
- zeabu, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1There should be no difference in schools, in particular in their quality. That same quality should be pushed as high as possible, as intelligence is spread around a bell-curve, and going for a common denominator will prevent smart people develop to their capacities. Going for an all-private-schools-system, will dumbdown the society, because there's more money earned with a common-denominator. No-one builds a university for three smart-pants.
- Spudster, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1A pure private system is disastrious. How the hell do low income families pay for a decent education? I think you have this crazy idea in your head that everyone has this magical ability to pay for education privately...

I'm not saying that this is great. I'm just saying that a lot of parents across the world would be unhappy about a teacher talking to their 14 year old child about anal sex. It has always been that way. If anything, it is less so now. - mike17032, on 06/01/2008, -2/+2Its a good thing your foil hat protects you!

From wikipedia. According to this he was killed because he "spilled his seed upon the ground" so he wouldn't have a son with Tamar, which made Yahweh pissed the ***** up so he killed him. - julianrod, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Yeah, masturbation != "pull out" birth control technique (which, BTW, works 99% of the time, right?)
- tech42er, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Actually, he was killed for not having sex with his older brother's widow. At that time, family ties were considered very important, so it was expected that a younger brother would marry his older brother's widow if his older brother was killed. Onan is obviously a cautionary "moral" tale about what happens if you don't follow the customs. It's no different than parents telling children about kids who get hit by cars when they don't look both ways or governments telling people about the risks of drunk driving or not wearing a seat belt. They're all scare stories so people will obey.

If you want more evidence, go back to the Salt Lake Tribune, and read about what has been happening with the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (1984 anyone?). They have been granted the police power to shut down bars and clubs, all the while using techniques that would have any decent judge throwing out their charges as entrapment. Or try reading the liquor laws. They spell out the size of shots and drinks to the hundreth of an ounce. Many of the bars have to install computer controlled dispensing machines to ensure the accuracy of their pours because the state has deemed SHOT GLASSES to be inaccurate in dispensing alcohol... Or read about the activities of one Chris Buttars, a state senator from West Jordan, who attempted to enact an equal time bill decades after the Scopes Monkey Trial. These are but a small sampling of the insanity that awaits one in the reddest state in the nation, UTAH!

I graduated from high school in Salt Lake City - pregnant (and I am not from a Mormon household). All the teachers are only aloud to teach is abstinence. Sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, loving marital sex, safe sex etc are strictly prohibited.

- NikoKun, on 06/01/2008, -1/+32How absurd can these parents get?
So now teachers aren't supposed to answer the student's questions? Oh nooo... we can't have kids learning too much!!! -_-
These parents are all fools... This is what they get, for not having the balls to teach sex ed to their kids, THEMSELVES. It means a stranger will teach them...
And of course, when the teachers teach them better than the parents... Oh nooo!! We want that teacher put in jail!!... -_-

- VitriolAndAngst, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6Its these kinds of parents -- the conservative knuckle-draggers who think their kids are going to be virgins until 20 years old, that get the most unplanned pregnancies. They don't plan for sex, so they don't know how to keep from having a baby. Caught in a moment of passion without birth control or condom -- usually because they are too drunk because it usually takes that to overcome all the guilt in their minds.
NO point in them looking at what works and what doesn't -- merely repeat the same failed moral lessons and condemnation that got them into an early marriage of desperation. Forget that you were ever a teen and start parenting.- trademaak, on 06/01/2008, -0/+0The irony is that those 20 year old virgins will probably dwell in basement watching some sick furry piss porn and writing fanfics about.

- joeanon, on 06/01/2008, -2/+43We should fine parents for not doing their job.
Or offer tax incentive to parents if their kid performs well in school.
AS it stands parents have no incentive, but their own personal grasp of reaity, to educate their kids or to even respect education.
Face it, most kids don't go to college, that means most parents haven't gone to college.
They cannot realistically educate their children themselves, nor can they grasp that hiding homosexuality from your child does not reduce their chances of being gay.
Just as not educating them on sex in general does not leave them unable to get pregnant or contract STDs.
We have to face the reaity that as the US public gets dumber, their judgment decline also but in the end WE ALL have to live with the kids, not just the parents. That's why not sending you kid to school is punishable by prison time.
Democracy is not about individual rights AT ALL COSTS.
It's about accepting the shared liability that is civilization and being as free as possible within that shared liability.
You are only as free as we the majority proclaim.. that's it.. your freedom to not educate your child or reject education does not exist but in the uneducated or radical mind.
In the end, money is the clearest and most universal way to motivate parents.
Eithing give them tax breaks or CHARGE THEM more taxes for their childs low academic performance, within reason of any learning disabilities and such.
Think about how much more interested many parent would get if there was a simple and tangible reward rather than this long term dream that if you educate your child, they might get a good job and work hard.
Most people cannot think in the long term, hence why the nation is in the mess we are today with high energy, medical, low education and endless military investments.
Democracy is only as good as the education level of the voters. If education slips too far, we will have no choice but to resort back toward elitism. The founding fathers were not Joe average, they were wealthy academics with educated visions. If the democracy cannot educate itself or in general raise their academic expectations, then the burden falls on the few, the educated.- Spire3660, on 06/01/2008, -1/+3I dont think you understand the true hideous nature of democracy. America is a republic, with rights enshrined that are not supposed to be subject to the tyranny of the majority. Your statement about 'you only as free as the majority proclaim' shows your ignorance of the true nature of the intent of our system of government. Democracy has its uses, but it is the idea that we are a republic that truly makes america great.
- webweave, on 06/01/2008, -1/+3Then start showing some of that greatness now.
I had to dig a bit to find where that school was but I thought it was going to be in the South, what a surprise I had forgotten Utah. A state that's trying to write a law that punishes teachers for teaching too much. I didn't know that it was TMI that was causing all the problems we are having but I guess Utah knows better. Certainly this kind of law is at odds with "America is a republic, with rights enshrined that are not supposed to be subject to the tyranny of the majority"
If you don't think education is the biggest problem in the Republic then you are fooling yourself.- tech42er, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Privatize the school system. Then teachers can teach whatever they want. The government won't control it; only the school administrators. Parents will send their kids to whatever school they want. Does that mean some schools will just be teaching abstinence-only sex ed? Yes, but it means not all schools will. While they're wrong, some people believe abstinence only sex ed is best, and they can send their kids to private schools that only teach that. But don't pollute the rest of the schools by enshrining it in law. So then what's the best middle ground? There isn't one, so there can't be a public school system.

I have my Masters in English Lit. and I still don't think that a person's individual intelligence is based around college attendance. College can be a tool for some people, but for others it is not as beneficial. It all depends on the line of work one goes into. It is unfair to assume that if a child does not go then his parents must not have gone.
Another point I must disagree with pertains to applying tax incentives to those whose children perform better in school. What happens when you child has a learning disability or cannot simply learn from how the information has been taught? This idea cannot work because, as humans, we all learn differently.- griffinjam, on 06/02/2008, -0/+0Disabilities, learning or otherwise, would obviously be a special case. But as for if kids just aren't learning...well, tough *****. I guess they just need to work harder then. And by they I'm referring to the child AND the parents.
The entire point of what he was saying is that the idiot kids being churned out is not our responsibility and that parents need to be taking the blame for this *****. Since they aren't there needs to be an incentive to get parents to actually care about how their kids do in school. Like, care more than just yelling for 5 minutes when they get bad grades, but actually working with them and helping them learn. You indicate that you understand that different people learn differently, and who best to adapt to how an individual child learns and help them in a way based around it than their parents? You want that tax break? Well, guess what mom and dad, it's time to brush up on your algebra.

- identitymatrix, on 06/01/2008, -26/+2The whole concept of having a sex ed class in schools never made sense to me. School is where you learn math, history, writing, science, etc. I can sort of see physical ed, because it is important to exercise, I just don't see how sex belongs in the same category. I mean if students wanted to learn about sex they could probably read some wikipedia articles, visit health websites, go to the library, things like that. I suppose a once-a-year PSA on the dangers of unprotected sex wouldn't hurt, but spending time every week talking about sex instead of more academic-related subjects seems like a big waste of time. But if parents really want a sex ed class, how exactly do they expect teachers to teach sex ed if they can't show anything remotely sexual and can't even talk about masturbation? Seems like masturbation comes first (no pun intended) in most peoples lives, and people do that more often, so that should be taught first. And what's the point of having a live teacher when he can't answer questions? You might as well just play one of those 80s videos about sex and have that be the whole class each week.
- Binto, on 06/01/2008, -0/+9sexual education is a public health issue, that's why.
While it is the job of the parents to explain this stuff to their kids, its clearly evident that the parents are *not* doing their job. Kids need to be educated about the spreading of diseases, pregnancies, etc. - gerardpetersen, on 06/01/2008, -1/+2Also... school, technically, is meant to prepare you for your life afterwards and if you look at society... sex is a big part of it...
- EddyFictitious, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1Schools are meant to prepare kids for later life, as far as I know sex is a major part of life.
- nylrym, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2What makes sex ed any less worthy a subject than these other classes? Part of the purpose of school is to produce adults capable of functioning in adult society. School is where children are supposed to *learn* adult things in preparation for becoming an adult. It is supposed to be a safe and somewhat controlled environment for introducing them to difficult or awkward topics.
"Yes, we took this land from its indigenous people and carted them off to reservations."
"Yes, we locked Japanese-descended citizens in internment camps during WWII out of fear, but not German-descended ones..."
The Holocaust.
These are difficult and troubling subjects, which if handled wrongly could traumatize children, and skew their world-view far more than a few awkward questions about sex. Should we discourage teaching these topics? I don't think so. We don't, because an understanding of the complexities of our history, and comprehension of our own (and our Nation's) action, and fallibility are necessary for a well-socialized adult in a society that went through those events, any adult who may have to deal with the long-term repercussions of those events and decisions.
A sufficiently robust understanding of sex (and I don't necessarily mean graphic or experience-based understanding) is also necessary for any adult who is going to have it, or deal with the issues of others who do, or the problems of those who want it but can't get it right now.
That's my two $0.02 worth anyway. - identitymatrix, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1I see your points. But like if school is meant to prepare kids for later life, then where is the class on filling out tax forms, or the class that covers understanding user license agreements, or the class that deals with money management, or the class that covers job searching (I never knew about head-hunters until I was contacted by one), etc.
Going in the public health direction, it's just weird that there is a class that teaches the dangers and risks of sexually transmitted diseases, but not normal diseases. Now I could definitely understand such a class if it was a more general kind of health class, with sex ed being one chapter, and other chapters covering topics such as the dangers of normal diseases; the dangers of alcohol and how to drink responsibly; illegal drugs and how harmful each illegal drug is, which are less harmful than alcohol, etc; maybe a chapter on smoking; sleep deprivation and what it does to your mind and body (since it seems like a lot of students are sleep deprived); the dangers of hypothermia, dehydration, and other things that might happen in extreme heat/cold/whatever; how to detect the onset of various physical or mental problems early (e.g. testicular cancer, bipolar disorder), maybe a chapter on physical exercise and what sort of movements are harmful for the knees and other joints, etc and what are good ways to exercise. You know just a general class on keeping the mind and body in good condition and what are the most common dangers and risks of doing certain things.
Right now it feels like they are teaching the Holocaust but nothing else, to make an analogy to a history class, and while the Holocaust is important to learn, so are many other key events in history.
- Binto, on 06/01/2008, -0/+9sexual education is a public health issue, that's why.
- Shivetya, on 06/01/2008, -3/+1If there is a law governing what the teacher is to instruct in their class and she violated this law or statute then I see no problem with the parents complaining. Sorry, but curriculum is developed to present facts the community deems appropriate for the age group. Excusing someone from both teaching standards and the standards of the community is wrong.
Yes some will think it close minded to not teach certain subjects or aspects of certain subjects but if we don't trust those who develop the curriculum and then trust those whose job it is to follow
