- yonoz, on 03/07/2009, -7/+32Fayad was the least corrupt high official in the PA. I'd like to see who Hamas put in his place.
- waydee, on 03/07/2009, -3/+19It's always funny how it can never be both sides at fault.
- trefitch, on 03/07/2009, -1/+17of course not. this is the internet; where you can find anything in the world except moderate viewpoints
- Garlik, on 03/07/2009, -4/+18Why can't Dane Cook resign?
- dub0, on 03/07/2009, -2/+13Yez70's comment is a lie. Typical of anti-Israel libel. Arab Israelis have full voting rights.
- tzvika613, on 03/08/2009, -0/+10"hudna" actually means "suspension". By definition - it is temporary.
- dub0, on 03/08/2009, -1/+10Furthermore, 70% of Israel is Arab and all can vote.
(50% Arab Jewish, 20% Arab Muslim, Christian and other religious minorities) - tzvika613, on 03/08/2009, -0/+9@Warom - so please tell us what the Israeli term for ceasefire is?
Cease-fire in any language does not mean peace. It means a cessation of exchange of fire. - HonestAbeinator, on 03/07/2009, -1/+8I'm pretty sure the PA is more of an administrative organization than a political one anyway. The PLO was the political side that would do negotiations and such while the PA was to handle administration until a true government could be instituted but they never reached an agreement.
Anyway the reason its funny is because Hamas' actions are definitely working against the interests of the Palestinian people. A more moderate party willing to negotiate could easily have had an independent state at this point. Unless of course you're implying that the Palestinian people care more about destroying Israel than having their own country; then Hamas would be representing their interests I guess... - poidh, on 03/07/2009, -11/+18You mean he was going to persuade the Palestinians to drop their desire to murder all the Jews and throw their bodies into the Mediterranean? Because after all, that's the biggest barrier to peace that's been there for 40 years.
- Gguillorn, on 03/07/2009, -2/+9Only 40 years?
- poidh, on 03/07/2009, -8/+14By the way, "ceasefire" doesn't mean "peace". The Muslim concept of "ceasefire" is called a "hudna", which means a temporary ceasefire which allows the Muslims to re-arm and re-organise so that they can begin military action at a time which is more advantageious to them.
- neko6, on 03/08/2009, -4/+10"it can never be both sides at fault." - Israel's had dozens of leaders who tried dozens of tactics and offered dozens of detailed peace agreements. The Palestinians are sadly under rule of a bunch of lunatic racist murderers who won't go away and won't negotiate reasonably.
- robbh66, on 03/07/2009, -9/+15"If not for all the bravado that was tossed around - they may have been able to come to a legitimate ceasefire."
..or the rockets tossed over the border... - yonoz, on 03/08/2009, -4/+10What night raids and air strikes? They had TWO YEARS of peace from us to stop the rockets.
- urik88, on 03/08/2009, -1/+7"Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum dismissed Fayyad's announcement.
''This government did not work for the sake of the Palestinians, it worked for its own agenda. This end was expected for a government that was illegal and unconstitutional,'' Barhoum said."
Dear god, the irony... - mattimo13, on 03/07/2009, -7/+12I love how the Hamas spokesman has the gall to criticise the Palestinian authority as not working in the interests of the people.
- neko6, on 03/08/2009, -2/+7Does it matter? Hamas will not recognize treaties signed by former Palestinian governments, so any unity government would be illegal to start with.
Assume Obama declares that all agreements signed by the US in the past are null and void, including for instance the peace treaty signed with Japan in 1945, meaning he starts bombing Japanese cities. Would there be any nation in the world that could accept his government in such a case? - Countess666, on 03/08/2009, -0/+4i think your thinking of Gaza, were Hamas rules... this guy was the prim minister of the west bank, the non-rocket firing non-invaded part of Palestine.
- mypetridish, on 03/07/2009, -4/+8it's hard to weigh in on this one. Maybe the Palestinian people do NOT want Israeli's occupation of their land thus making PA as "not working in the interest of the people"
You can't view the world only from one side. You talk about the Palestinian's interest but you don't even know what they want - yonoz, on 03/08/2009, -4/+8Hey, it's Israel's fault too, okay? Now try and find a way out. Who's the obstacle?
- yonoz, on 03/08/2009, -0/+4Let's see what Hamas says about that when they join the government. Let them expose their folly to their people.
- urik88, on 03/08/2009, -2/+6It's quite surprising considering that before Abbas, the PA was controlled by Arafat, a very important terrorist and fighter against Israel.
- neko6, on 03/08/2009, -5/+9"You seriously going to cling to that" - well, since the operation ended, Hamas has fired over 100 rockets. So apparently, their desire to murder Jews hasn't really gone away.
They also refused to cease fire when the death toll was 0, so its nothing new. - yonoz, on 03/08/2009, -2/+5Sure, everyone knows the best way to gain statehood is to resign. Why, every nation in the world was made when someone resigned!
- poidh, on 03/08/2009, -4/+7@neko6
Don't get suckered into thinking it's a racist thing. It isn't; it's an issue of religious supremacism.
The two things to consider are:
1. That hatred of Jews is enshrined in Islamic law.
2. That under Islamic law, any land which has been governed by Muslims is Islamic land forever.
That's why we have a problem here. - Hollow5, on 03/07/2009, -1/+4Because you won't find the dick that can replace him.
- yonoz, on 03/08/2009, -0/+3I don't think so either. My comment is meant to illustrate d911t's logical error.
- yonoz, on 03/08/2009, -1/+3Tool.
- Hollow5, on 03/07/2009, -1/+3not an inch.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -0/+1it's a ***** art. biased and barely informative .
did not digg or bury - mypetridish, on 03/08/2009, -2/+3@HonestAbeinator: I see where you are coming from. however, you cant discount the possibility that the Palestinians simply want their lands back; especially those taken by the settlers. from thir POV, Hamas may be the only party to liberate them from israeli occupation and illegal land settlement
@neko6: that's debatable. there were many evidence that support Hamas as not being the provoker: even the Israeli army spokesperson confirmed that there were much less rockets coming before Israel invaded Gaza. In short, israel drew first blood and broke the ceasefire first - writie, on 03/08/2009, -1/+2I don't think he expects the state to pop up tomorrow morning. It's more a case of being able to put together a unity government. The statehood is a different issue.
- hamobu, on 03/07/2009, -17/+18Palestinians do not have a government. Palestinian authority is really an Israeli government sub-contractor to conroll Palestinian population. Israel controls all the money flow of PA and can over-rule any PA decision and do what ever it wants on the area controlled by PA.
- yonoz, on 03/08/2009, -2/+3That is the global aspect of this problem, and the entire world needs to find some sort of balance on this issue, since Muslims governed over much more than Israel, and conflict in Israel will spark a barrel of religious explosives. We've seen in the latest conflict in Gaza the effective use of a modern military against a well-based urban guerilla, as well as the effects of such combat on the civilian population. I should hope there be no more fighting, but it seems as if Israel is being pushed into a tight corner - and the Israeli people will stand on every inch of what we're holding right now, until we feel safe enough. We cannot fortify the entire city of Ashkelon as we did in Sderot - and the situation there is unbearable enough at this very moment.
What strikes me is that there are plenty of westerners who do not appreciate the full meaning of life under constant threat of rockets. But then again, Sderot isn't in Sweden, Britain or Russia, so why should they care? - nytel, on 03/07/2009, -3/+3Cause he isn't a prime minister?
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -3/+3http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-eas ...
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -1/+1o bumer is doing just that with the constitution
`
(Assume Obama declares that all agreements signed by the US in the past are null and void, including for instance the),,,,,, Constitution - neko6, on 03/08/2009, -3/+2"You talk about the Palestinian's interest but you don't even know what they want" - I'm pretty sure the Palestinian people didn't want 1300 dead, but Hamas carried out their rocket attacks and refused to cease fire before the operation, during it and even after it ended.
- Demand911Truth, on 03/08/2009, -4/+3Can you blame him? His country was illegally invaded and occupied, and he couldn't stop it. That's pretty disillusioning, no matter how you slice it.
- syntaxgs, on 03/07/2009, -9/+8I think the new president should probably give these war,Claimed territories back to Israel IMO there,s never been a palestine
- OMGIAMTHEMAN, on 03/08/2009, -4/+2first, it's all invaded.. second, part of the reason gaza was firing rockets in the first place was that israel was using the "cease-fire" with gaza to come down on the west bank.. you know building illegal settlements, bulldozing palestinian homes, etc.
- anubis1611, on 03/07/2009, -4/+2And this will make a difference how?
- Gguillorn, on 03/07/2009, -11/+9..or the night raids and air strikes...
- AgeofMastery, on 03/07/2009, -5/+3Be interesting to see how this plays out...
- str3ama, on 03/07/2009, -13/+10this is actually quite sad, because the guy had real potential to secure some semblance of peace. It's a shame that Israel was going through an election since they needed to put on a show on who could be the toughest on border security hence all the theatrics earlier this year. If not for all the bravado that was tossed around - they may have been able to come to a legitimate ceasefire.
- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -17/+12Palestinian Prime Minister was tired of trying to have an intelligent discussion with rock throwers and Hamas human shields. Trying to smack some sense into them was hopeless. He resigned and told Israelis to turn the place into a glass parking lot.
- dalittle, on 03/08/2009, -10/+6You seriously going to cling to that after 1300 palestinian deaths in Gaza by israel and all of the west bank homes destroyed by israel that even had the unusual criticism by the US.
- spoon088, on 03/07/2009, -12/+8I'd resign too if my land was taken away, my people killed, our cities invaded, razed, and looted and there was nothing you can do. No point in being the leader when it's just a figurehead position that's demonized by the Western world. At least other figureheads around the world are respected, this guy gets the blame for everything that happens.
- mypetridish, on 03/07/2009, -10/+5tldr version: Palestinian Authority is a puppet government sponsored by the Israelis. They are invalid rulers that did not win the election.
