- Oatlord, on 10/12/2007, -101/+144So we're to forget that Iran is taking an offensive posture to Israel and western civilization because there are some pretty locals, nice architecture, and "coolest calligraphy stylized art writing in the world"? What about the fact their country is run by a fascist, racist, violent religious sect with no tolerance for non-Islamic views? My friend has a coworker who once lived in Iran and she vividly remembers the wide-spread mistreatment of women while living there and the general, medieval mindset the general population there fosters. I'm not saying we need to run in and invade, but let's not forget the truth of what Iran is about. Too often I read comments by people who make America and its leadership out to be the world's devils, but will give a pass to countries like Iran.
- Wrathernaut, on 10/12/2007, -41/+33And here I thought that any country run by an insane, anti-semetic hatemonger couldn't have nice scenery.
It isn't politics or America that's ruining Iran it's good old Ahmadinejad.
If somebody's killing the men that protect me, I don't care if it's a pot-bellied guy who fell from the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down, or a hot swimsuit model. Well, what you're most likely to see on the news are mudhuts, women in full black burkas and whatnot, because to support the war effort, the Iranian people need to be dehumanized in the media. Also, fact is, Ahmadinejad actually has very little power, which has to be approved by several other higher-ups, and he's the only most outspoken radical in the country's parliament right now. The parliament system:
http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/6231/schemagvtiranenxa2.png
So Iran has an unpopular leader in charge with much more conservative and radical views than most of the parliament and and is largely despised by the nation's peoples. Sound familiar?

Or are we to discount the beautiful images because they come from a country that does not share our values? The post was about the photos, not about the policies. this way you aren't blaming people that have no idea whats really going on, besides getting up, working, coming home, eating, then going to sleep. 92% are like this in america... get it straight. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32I was talking to my Persian friend recently, and she told me that Iran actually has some of the most liberal and forward thinking citizens in the region. Only problem is that they are currently run by an power-hungry moron. Funny, I said, Iran and the USA are more similar than Americans realize.
This is what really bothers me. Americans think of Iran as a backwards and evil place, just because of who leads them and what the newspapers say. I know how frustrating this is as an American who travels a lot - every time I'm on vacation, I have to defend my nation because of who runs the place and what the newspapers say. - smartass007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19@tomplansmedia

To say that you would need something called "Proof".
You know, you would have to PROVE that Bush doesn't want America to see those pictures, with FACTS. Or you would have to PROVE that the media is hiding the pictures, and deliberately not showing them. Could it maybe be that (shock), the stock news footage doesn't include the pictures, and when an event does happen it doesn't occur in front of a beautiful monument? - unibomber999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13America doesn't see it because the server is down.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5@rm999
Having "some of the most liberal and forward thinking" citizens in the Islamic world is kind of like having the best teeth in Victorian England. It's still nothing to brag about.
These regular citizens are the same ones that, as students, took over 60 American citizens hostage and held them captive for 444 days, as a protest. Funny, when western college students protest, they usually just chant a lot and refuse to shower. They don't kidnap innocent civilians.
I'm absolutely against wasting our taxpayer-funded bullets on a place like Iran. I see no reason to go to war, nothing good can possibly come of it.
That doesn't mean Iranian society is some enlightened home of modern thinkers with western ideals, though. They're still a backwards country that we should keep as far away from us as possible. - Gazerock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@felchdonkey
Welcome to the 70s. The group that did it were also radicals. The general Iranian middle class and above these days love the west. Though women are made to wear the hijab outdoors, the law has really loosened up, and so most do so in a fashionable way. American movies are all the rage, and the place is having such a great technological boom to the point where downtown has, like the west, many cybercafes and even whole malls with only PDA/Laptops/PC and electronic media stores. Iran even has the fourth largest blogging community in the world.
There are always revolts and riots against the government, and like in many other places that have had experienced a constricted democracy or fascism, these are usually spearheaded by University students. In Tehran, the nations capital, over 2000 people had even gathered together within a week of the World Trade Center attacks and had a candle-light vigil for the American victims. And yes, even there, the general consensus among the Iranian people is that Ahmadinejad is a nutjob.
For pictures of Iran's peoples and urban areas, check out:

You'll see that the people and look of the place overall is not very different from here. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6gazerock -
One of the "radicals" that committed the kidnapping is now President of Iran.
Just because a nation has oil wealth and likes to buy western goods doesn't make it liberal or modern.
Any time you have to say "though women are made to wear the hijab outdoors, the law has really loosened up," you're really not making a country look good.
Maybe in another couple generations, they will have learned to join the modern world, but for now, they still sound backwards to me. I'm not saying this as an excuse to fight, a war would be idiotic. I'm just saying they're not "just like us." - Junn168, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4Iran is such a beautiful country. What a shame that we'll have to bomb them back to the stone age if they don't stop threatening Israel and trying to build nukes.
- Templeofjava, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@lukas....If you think Iran is beautiful, you should see the mountains and countryside of Afghanistan. I have been deployed here 4 times. Its hard to believe that a country with such awesome scenery could be this backwards.
- jcm267, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6"So Iran has an unpopular leader in charge with much more conservative and radical views than most of the parliament and and is largely despised by the nation's peoples. Sound familiar?"
Well ... to be fair I'd say Admanejad (mangled spelling) is much more of a radical than Bushy boy. Come on... One guy supports the eradication of Israel and thinks that the halocaust didn't happen. The other thinks that Jesus is the reason why he doesn't drink any more and is pro-life on religious grounds.
Also, with Iran's involvement in the Iraq war they need to be dealt with somehow. I don't care how much the country is advancing economically with all that oil money. Every nation of "evildoers", as Bush likes to call them, is only evil at the top. Not all Germans were evil. Not all Japanese people were evil. Germany was perhaps the most advanced country in the world. We still had to do something about them. - BGog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6How does this matter? The pretty landscape and nice architecutre have NOTHING to do with the current government. That would be like telling Sadam, "Hey man. Sorry we bombed you but don't worry, we have nice mountains in our country." Really quite irrelevant.

Well firstly I would like to point out that our "allies" Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are actually far far more fascist and racist and have far worse treatment for both Muslims and non-Muslims - the matter is highlighted by the simple fact that women in Saudi Arabia cant even drive and must cover their faces, while Iranian women must wear a headscarf which doesnt cover the face and they can get away with just paying lipservice to - and can also drive, and vote.
Secondly I would like to say, ***** ISRAEL. Im sorry but no-one gives a ***** about Israel, what the ***** hell has Israel EVER done for us except lie and cheat and weasle its ***** ***** way around. It sounds like the Iran you are speaking of is the one when we were giving aid to Iraq under the Reagan administration when we had issues with Iran. Rightfully so, Iran was being quite a pain. The country has taken some positive steps since then. What any of this has to do with pictures? I do not know.
It also sounds like you have some sort of inner turmoil seeing as how you get so defensive and start yapping about war when the post is about pictures that you do not see in the media. Nobody told you to forget anything. Is there something you would like to forget? Thanks for turning this into a political issue.

- thecoolestguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6actually elmo, Iran is not supporting terrorists in Iraq, they are supporting militias that are trying to protect the Shias who are subjected to daily bombings by Sunni Arabs. Some of these militias form death squads, which of course is inexcusable, but Iran is NOT behind the violence against US troops. They have ordered all militias who they have sway over to not attack American troops. Stop buying in to the new anti-Shia propaganda. - inphu510n, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13Define "terrorist regime".
- Boeing777, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30a terrorist regime is a regime that attacks a countries without any reason and turn it into ruine a bit like the US and UK have done in Iraq. A terrorist regime is a military force that uses unconventional weapons against civilians like Saddam had done with the blessing of the US and UK in mind 80s against Iran and the Kurds. Or a bit what Isreal has done against Lebonon last summer or treats palestinians like people who don't deserve to live like humans.

You don't have the Christian majority in this or any country calling for the extermination of a race. You don't have Christians in this or any country calling for the Pope to be assassinated. You don't have Christians in this country going out-right ape ***** because some cartoonist dared to draw Mohammad. Christians aren't saints themselves (hehe), but they're not on the same level as the frothing at the mouth mad muslim extremists (and the muslim majority for not having more public outcrys of what the few bad apples are doing). But to get back to Iran, you don't have this country or any other western country calling for the extermination of a people or another country. When Iran and the rest of the middle east FASCISTS (yes, they are fascists and nazis, not the U.S. or Bush), decide to join the collective world in the 21st century, then maybe things will be all swell and dandy. Don't ever think for a second that those crazy a-holes will stop wanting all of Western civilization dead when we pull out of Iraq or when Israel is gone, because you're fooling yourself.
Would be nice if the Middle East would return to the apex of civilization that it once was and we had an influx of entrepreneurial middle easterns coming into this country and opening more middle eastern restaurants. I'm getting tired of Mexican and Chinese food. Until then, I can only hope countries like Iran and muslim radicals can ditch the extremism and join the rest of the world here in the present day instead of hanging out in medieval times.

And all I have to say to that is, YELLOW CAKE. - WanderLink, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7You are obviouslt an uneducated idiot, as is anyone who modded me down. Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, IS a terrorist. He was one of the terrorists who kidnapped and held hostage 52 U.S. citizens in 1979 Tehran at the U.S. embassy. There are hostages who remember seeing his face. There are pictures of him there. Add this to the fact that he regularly spews hate by saying things like, Israel needs to be "wiped off the map" and that the Holocaust "never happened", and that he seeks nuclear power. You really trust a man like this with nuclear power? It's funny how you cry propaganda without specifying exactly what this phantom propoganda is. Get your head out of conspiracy-ville *****. - stubear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I was lucky enough to travel to Egypt in 2000 while there was a lull in the problems in the Middle East. I would love to see other parts of Northern Africa and the Middle East but there's this one problem. I'm singled out for living in a country an established portion of this section of the world seems to dislike. There is no regard for human life with these people. I don't think all Middle Easterners are out to kill Americans, in fact I think a very small minority is to blame. However, it is this very sme minority which makes it very difficult to travel to these parts of the world and enjoy the beauty, history, art and architecture. It's a shame that I will likely never be given this opportunity because I don't see a change in the way these people deal with the rest of the world. They'v allowed hate to be taught to far too many generations.

Only problem is that they are currently run by an power-hungry moron. Funny, I said, Iran and the USA are more similar than Americans realize.
This is what really bothers me. Americans think of Iran as a backwards and evil place, just because of who leads them and what the newspapers say. - rac3r5, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3I think a number of the permanent members of the UN are to blame for a lot of the nonsense in the middle east, oh and the Romans too.
The Romans kicked the Jews out of Israel about a thousand years ago.
Before and during WW2, Jews, christians and muslims lived together in the middle east.
The Brits and Russians force the Shah to abdicate in favor of his son.
Then the Brits messed up Palestine and created Israel, Palestinians (Muslim and Christians) are displaced and everyone in the region gets pissed off.
Iran democratically elects a leader who is overthrown by the US and Britain
Saddam invades Iran, and is provided weapons + finance + chemicals from permanent member of the UN
Israel develops nuclear weapons and has not signed the NNPT, and everyone turns a blind eye.
Everyone is riled up about Iranian prez being bad because he said that Israel should be bombed (really bad and idiotic on his part). However in contrast the US (Bush), bombed the crap out of Iraq and destabilized the entire country and took away the one person who kept religious fanatics in check. (All these prez's are idiots).
